The new Seamaster is a gorgeous, high quality watch but it's styling is too extravagant to compete with the tame, classically styled Submariner.
We all know you're not supposed to wear divers with suits but it's something that's become common and effortless to do with a Sub, which I don't think is possible with a Seamaster that's both taller and more garishly styled.
The Sub wins IMO because of the two it's the watch for every occasion. It fits in just as effortlessly at the beach, in boardroom, or on the altar.
If you're rich and can buy multiple luxury watches then it doesn't matter but for those regular people who are going to save up for years to buy that one expensive luxury watch that they'll wear everywhere for the rest of their life and eventually hand down, it's always going to be the Sub.
So, does the Seamaster have the offerings from Rolex beat? Omega has been somewhat behind Rolex ever since they went in on quartz and people realized they were charging way more than quartz should cost. Rolex had the things that the snobs really wanted; modern materials, in-house movements, pedigree, etc. Omega now has come back with all of those things in the new Seamaster. So, is it better than the Sub?
Personally, I think so. I think it looks better, and I think it wears better, and I think that it's a good modern take on what is fundamentally an antiquated technology. Not that Rolex has stopped improving things since the days of old, of course, but there's something about the Omega that seems less show-offy and more substance than before.
I am smitten with this new seamster. Only thing I would change is that helium escape valve seams to be a bit much.
Whenever a headline asks a yes or no question, the answer is always "no".
Watchfinder make these high production value videos, but I just don't get it. Always these clickbait titles/themes, from a company that only sells pre-owned, so is rarely going to even have these pieces in stock.
As for the seamaster, until they ditch the affected helium escape valve crown which rolex and tudor have achieved without crown... Then no, they're not beating anyone except customers who don't understand what a helium escape valve is. Besides, aren't saturation divers often deeper than 300m?
I tried on a blue dial Seamaster 300 at an AD and loved how it looked on my wrist.
Rolex is a "safe"watch.
Omega is a "sleek" watch.
Thats how I interpret the 2 brands.
I've always hated the Seamaster 300 models for some reason - I don't know why. I do like the new versions even though not much is different.
