how do you feel about the future of the franchise it's been over a decade since Disney's acquisition of lucasfilm a purchase that opened up a whole new world of Star Wars potential but rather than expanding on an already developed story Disney's brilliant plan for Success started with removing the extended Universe from Canon deleting countless stories and characters beloved by the fans obviously we have hundreds of Books and Comics and everything you could possibly imagine I sort of moved that Treasure Trove of stories and various things to Kathy and you know complete confidence that she's going to take them and make great movies and then the sequel Trilogy a series of films so horrendously bad that they not only split the fan base in half but they lost a billion dollars in the process leaving the franchise in pieces after the Last Jedi in the rise of Skywalker permanently staining the legacy of Star Wars oh God no no no and in all this time the only thing they have managed to create that has been generally accepted by the fan base has been the Mandalorian a show that pushes the boundaries of style over substance a show that is running on Boral time featuring Mando in my heart the stupidest person in the Galaxy a bounty hunter that almost never hunts any bounties a character that is completely Invincible when the plot requires it while also being brain dead when it's convenient for the scene we don't have time for this and his tiny companion baby Yoda aka grogu the little [ __ ] bag that Disney forced into this show Strictly for merchandise they have the potent combination of cool and cute but after almost three seasons together they barely have a story The Wolf and Club archetype is something that can make for an amazing journey watching them grow and learn from each other the hell you doing practicing what ways to die no one's gonna kill me who taught you that shite what do you mean why because you can't why what the hell are you doing he'll live but for the past few years we've been forced to watch Mando waddle about doing shitty side quests pointless missions and anything and everything that they can do to set up fight scenes and cameos well baby's stupid does cute things for the camera to distract you from the fact that nothing is happening hey we just need to get some milk we don't like mandalorians but we'll give you some milk if you kill the warlord monster Bandit that's been using at Wi-Fi [Music] okay well here's your MIP wait a second oh no baby Yoda drank all the milk and then Along came the last of us a story with a similar character structure featuring none other than The Man Behind the Mask Pedro Pascal set in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by a zombie outbreak starring Joel a man trying to regain his Humanity by saving the life of Ellie a young girl who's immune to the virus and I find it incredible that in just a few episodes of Television they have achieved more with the characters of Joel and Ellie than these two have done in years so let's take a look and compare why Joel and Ellie's reunion was a powerful scene that has so much to say about Humanity versus the pathetic return of grogu in the book of Boba Fett from the very beginning the show makes a valid effort to characterize Joe Miller a morally ambiguous individual that has been broken down by his past after the tragic death of his daughter during the start of the outbreak and follows his tragic life 20 years after the disaster he is reintroduced in a morbid scene of tossing the body of an infected child into the fire a heart cold enough for this kind of work and a ruthless reputation to match it and after a deal gone bad in the death of a friend he is forced to travel across the country with a young girl whose blood holds the key to any potential vaccines Ellie was born long after the virus wiped out millions of people and hasn't seen much of the world and her youthful enthusiasm clashes with Joel's cold demeanor and we see her slowly break him down over the course of the season and teach him how to open up and love again a journey where they both had to fight kill and learn to trust one another in order to survive I ain't telling you [ __ ] it's okay no I believe him no culminating in the finale where Joel was forced to make a tragic Choice after arriving at their destination they are knocked unconscious as a precaution and Joe was rudely awakened with the news that Ellie is being taken in for surgery without even Consulting either of them he thinks that the cordyceps and Nelly has grown with her since birth why is she in surgery it produces a kind of chemical messenger it makes normal cordyceps think that she's quarter steps it's why she's immune he's going to remove it from her multiply the cells in a lab he thinks it could be a carriage roll cordyceps grows inside the brain Joel pleads with her to find someone else after confirming that Ellie won't survive the operation and Marlene a character who has known her since the day she was born stands firm with her decision I have no other choice I do she has Joel escorted out of the building and we get a fantastic performance from Pedro portraying the Demonic eyes of a father about to lose his daughter for the second time thank you and he ultimately chooses Ellie over the rest of the world and ruthlessly shoots his way through the hospital to rescue her Joe commits and makes the decision for both of them I won't let you take her invoke her they've actually seen they've stopped looking for a cure and even after being confronted by Ellie about the truth he stands firm with his decision swear to me that everything you said about the fireflies is true I swear a powerful ending that could be interpreted in so many different ways but why is it well written throughout the season we have had a steady foreshadowing of Joel's abilities from the men holding tests being afraid of him to the insight about their past from his brother Tommy about the things Joel did to survive please don't do it we have seen him take no half measures killing anyone that might stand in their way even with the pain of old age and crippling anxiety attacks he still managed to be an intelligent and dangerous character and this scene is the perfect culmination for their Journey forcing him to go from joking with her one minute to potentially never seeing her again the next unleashing his fury on the fireflies and showing us the monster that's been hidden within and once they're back together he's a father again eager to open up about his daughter Sarah for the very first time which only confirms to Ellie that he would never give her up that easily and there's no way that he's telling the truth about the hospital would Ellie have agreed that she's still being awake is this something that she can forgive did Joel make the right choice was it out of selfishness or love there's so many ways you can look at it and even more ways to take the characters forward thanks to a reunion that is this well structured the last of us has its fair share of issues but when it comes to making this relationship meaningful and just a handful of episodes I have nothing but praise so Time Heals all wounds I guess it wasn't time that did it now let's compare that to the Mandalorian where unlike Ellie and Joel almost zero effort has been put into developing the relationship this is a character that was mysterious and intriguing when he was first introduced with a dynamic arsenal of weapons and a unique design the potential for Mando was Limitless and after a deal gone bad in the death of a Droid all of that is out the window and he decides to adopt a baby and after three years of this [ __ ] I still don't know why unlike Ellie who is essential to the plot and Joel's Ark grogu has no reason to even be here none of the development of his character has ever taken seriously as they are stuck between treating him like an infant and having him be a god-like force user to save Mandel when he [ __ ] up and since he can't speak all the development of the relationship depends on Mando and all we really know about helmet man is he's an orphan just like grogu and somehow that's enough for him to shoot up a whole facility and get blacklisted as a bounty hunter just to get him back none of the substance or development that went into jewels none of the meaningful moments they shared to bond Mando does this in the third episode right after meeting him all right no please please don't hurt him it's just a child no no the mystery behind him could have been really interesting if he was actually a ruthless Bounty Hunter but it doesn't work in a show about him adopting an alien I need to know what he's thinking why was it worth ruining his career and reputation to keep him he means more to me than you will ever know why instead I have no idea why he fought so hard to keep him just to give him away in the very next season so what started as a mystery is now simply a lack of characterization and instead of giving the story time to breathe they shove them back together in another show not because it was a part of the plan but simply because baby Yoda merchandise sells and they can't risk losing their little cash cow so we were cursed with the pathetic scene of Mandel running through the streets like a jackass from a Droid once again forgetting that he has a jet pack and conveniently bumps right into grogu after he was sent back in a [ __ ] taxi after discovering the terrible training methods of plastic Lube get back up and wanting to return to Mando look who's here what hey what are you doing here one of the most cheap empty reunions I've ever seen in my life but why is it badly written sir if you're right the opportunity to make Mando a great character has been slowly pissed away by not only doing such a crap job of developing his personality but by slowly destroying his Mystique one episode at a time ruining the one thing that carried him through the first season before we found out he was an idiot well I suppose you're suckerberg even his faction has gotten so pretentious and annoying that I no longer care to learn anything about them this is the way this is the way this is the way got it the entire show now rests on the bond between these two and after making their relationship the focal point of the story they've essentially highlighted just how meaningless it is in this scene rather than structuring a payoff that is in line with their characters and properly culminates their Journey they slap them back together as fast as possible just to sell a few more toys at the very least separating them gave Mando a chance to get back to bounty hunting and explore his character finally while setting up the potential for the reunion in the future but instead they decide to burn both those bridges in exchange for this embarrassing scene and leave us with very little to look forward to as my question in season three is the same as season one why are you here and what the [ __ ] are you doing Ellie's Survivor Guild and the gray nature of Joel's decision gives you plenty of things to consider moving forward but not only was this set up like crap Where Do We Go From Here another three seasons of this is the way and that stupid sound Mando walking around wasting our time doing [ __ ] all until they find an excuse for him to shoot something Disney has all the money they need to make the show look fantastic they have an audience that doesn't give a [ __ ] about writing conditioned to consume this worthless form of Storytelling they have everything they need to succeed yet they still can't take the time to create anything meaningful and when the star is aligned and they remove the shackles of stupidity and actually try to tell a story the fans revolved because if Stormtroopers aren't dropping like flies in every scene then it is a Star Wars they have cracked the formula for generic basic [ __ ] entertainment where everything is fine Everyone likes it but nobody truly loves it even though it was the passionate love of the fans that kept Star Wars alive over the decades and after watching the helmet and the child get embarrassed by Joel and Ellie in just one season I'm not sure Disney will ever understand you blew it [Music] [Applause] thank you [Applause]
