[Music] up until the end of world war ii ships were basically just large floating artillery platforms they slowly got bigger and bigger carrying larger and larger guns the us for example built and planned to build larger and larger battleships but that all changed with the introduction of the missile today no one builds or operates battleships instead they pack more weapons into smaller ships but some do so more than others for example russia's latest corvette the scaraguchi class a tiny ship carries some 16 air defense missiles the pretty long ranged 9m96d also used in the s400 also eight caliber cruise missiles either the anti-ship or land attack variant which is similar to the us tomahawk eight torpedoes three close-in weapon systems and a hundred millimeter gun now i know it's not a perfect comparison but the us freedom class on the other hand which is a much larger ship carries depending on its loadout a much smaller 57 millimeter gun no sea whiz no long range or even medium range defenses only the very short range rolling airframe missile no tomahawks but sometimes a significantly shorter range naval strike missile and no torpedoes and you'll see this trend exist comparing frigates destroyers cruisers and even aircraft carriers to some degree so why is it that russia seems to be able to pack so many more weapons onto their warships than the us and this sponsor fits perfectly the hottest naval game battle warship naval empire it's a mobile 3d game that's free to play with 25 million downloads worldwide you play as a commander develop your naval base and build up the most powerful naval fleet there are over 100 different types of aircraft carriers alone as well as 200 of the most advanced fighters bombers and helicopters available in the game this multiplayer game offers player vs player battles as well as guild vs guild wars and you could fight alongside your friends in an alliance there are massive fleets to sink pirates to beat and sea monsters to slay and you really have to use strategy in order to win the game go try the game now and participate in the latest time limited activities use code covert to claim that time limited gift just for signing up again battle warship naval empire the difference is really noticeable to the untrained eye if you look at a slava class cruiser for example the first thing you'll notice are these massive 16 missile tubes and then when you look closer there seems to be weapons everywhere compare that to the us ticonderoga-class cruiser you might first notice its two main guns maybe the smaller missile tubes on its stern and if you look real close maybe the two phalanx seawiz but that's it but of course you'd be missing the majority of each's weapons which are housed in vls or vertical launch system cells they are a much more efficient way of storing weapons they're quicker than those and relied on rails simpler and better protected from the elements inside their sealed containers the problem though is that you are now limited by the size of the vls cells any future weapon you build has to fit inside that space and with hypersonic weapons on the horizon they might not fit on any u.s surface ships due to their large size but even when you factor vls in russian ships have more weapons in fact they have the most heavily armed and largest warships in the world the kirov class battle cruisers these things are massive and armed to the teeth the admiral nakamoth which is being rebuilt right now will have 174 vls 94 for long range air defenses and 80 for anti-ship and land attack weapons plus almost 200 of the short-range 9m 311k across its six cache channel point defense systems along with 10 torpedo tubes rockets and more the difference in aircraft carriers mentioned earlier really sums up a lot of the difference here modern us aircraft carriers are geared toward just that carrying aircraft as for weapons they only carry the short range point defenses like phalanx rolling airframe missile and the somewhat longer range sea sparrow missiles compare that to russia's admiral kuznetsov which despite being much smaller carries several times more point defense systems but also 12 massive p-700 anti-ship missiles as an offensive weapon but it carries significantly less aircraft in fact russia doesn't really even classify it as an aircraft carrier but instead as a heavy aircraft carrying cruiser so technically russia doesn't have an aircraft carrier whereas the us currently operates 11 with a 12th under construction the u.s navy's surface fleet often revolves around these aircraft carriers and their aircraft with many of their destroyers cruisers and other ships escorting them around the world's oceans so it's a completely different doctrine when a u.s carrier strike group goes into combat whether it's against other naval ships or a land-based threat its aircraft will carry out most of the fighting they give the navy a much better view of the battlefield more flexibility and greater range and payload than any ship which is stuck on the surface slow and limited in what they can see by the horizon the u.s navy is also much more of an offensive force in russia where u.s fleets will regularly operate near the coast of china russia europe the middle east et cetera russia's surface fleet is more defensive typically only operating near their own coast or near their own naval bases in other countries like syria the large numbers of anti-ship missiles carried are aimed at trying to stop us aircraft carriers that are coming toward them in the event of war broke out this also explains why russia is arming things like those small corvettes with land attack and anti-ship caliber cruise missiles these aren't designed for nor do they have the facilities to operate out deep into the open ocean like the larger frigates destroyers and cruisers so they're aimed at attacking enemy ships and land-based threats that are nearby so a lot of the difference comes down to doctrine but still there seems to be a missed opportunity right regardless of how you use it if you can pack more weapons on a ship and make it more capable then why doesn't the us do it there are many answers to that one interesting point too is that at least in terms of the arleigh burke-class destroyer they're actually taking weapons off the ship the newest ones no longer carry harpoon anti-ship missiles and they removed one and in some cases both the ship's phalanx sea whiz the reason for this is that the us is undergoing a shift with the ending of the cold war and the new threat from a growing chinese navy more of a focus on submarine warfare created the need to build a helicopter hangar which required removing the harpoon missiles also new anti-ship missiles are being developed like an anti-ship version of tomahawk and the lrasm both which can fit in the destroyer's vls cells making harpoon unnecessary also some are replacing their phalanx with cram which uses guided missiles making it more accurate other plans include eventually installing laser weapons on board something that can potentially be much more reliable accurate and without being limited by available missiles or bullets like cram and phalanx are also the newer evolve sea sparrow missile or essm is small enough to fit four of them in each vls cell really multiplying the number of air defense missiles they can carry so with u.s destroyers which are by far the most numerous of any other type of warship in the u.s navy they are currently changing out systems and weapons to face a new threat another answer to that question is safety maintenance and reliability packing as many weapons as you can into a small area typically isn't the safest it's also generally not the easiest to make repairs and maintain either because it's more crowded then also the reliability issue every ship has its problems and things will break and fail regardless of whether it's the us or russia but russia doesn't spend nor do they have anywhere near the same amount of money for maintenance overhauling replacing and verifying that all systems and weapons are working correctly this was real evident in the years following the collapse of the soviet union and again that cramped space available on board these ships due to the presence of so many other systems makes those repairs so much more difficult the work on the admiral nakama battlecruiser for example is years behind schedule the complexity of having so many different systems and weapons even halted repairs for two years as they stopped to try to figure out how to proceed the marshall houston off also had many problems and delays when they finally decided to just completely overhaul the ship and then of course there's the admiral kuznetsov aircraft carrier which has had an endless string of problems so it really comes down to a few different things but in a one-on-one comparison russian ships are often more heavily armed and in a hypothetical one-on-one battle now you can argue about the effectiveness and reliability of weapon systems they have but you might want to put your money on the russian [Music] you
