pro tools cubase logic studio one and of course reaper these are just a handful of the daws in the market today and if you don't know what a daw is it stands for digital audio workstation and it's just all of this stuffed into this so why do i think reaper is the best choice for your home studio well for one i made all the music for this today i'm not going to be doing any guitar or playing any music for you this video was for people looking to get started with home studio recording and how they can get the best sound for the least cost well i'm going to start by dropping truth bomb number one on you here when it comes to sound quality it doesn't matter which daw you get you heard me right it doesn't matter which daw you get for sound quality a wave is a wave is a wave or whatever file format you're using to save your music files you're not recording on analog tape anymore you're recording on a hard drive the hard drive is your recording medium we used to record on one of these and now record on one of these and whatever daw you record with it's going to sound the same no matter which one you do because they're not designed to color the sound in any way unlike a mixing board or whatever you used in the past in fact they're designed completely the opposite they're not meant to color the sound at all whatever signal's going into the computer is going to be what you hear back out so why choose one daw over another well it comes down to features and workflow and that leads me to truth bomb number two all the major daws the ones i listed at the beginning of the video pretty much all have the same capabilities if one doesn't do what another does they get into it in the next update and at this point 20 years into daws being out there any additional features are my new show like what you're seeing on this list here anything you need to do to make life easy while you're recording is going to be featured in any major daw so what's left when choosing a doll for your home studio well it's got to come down to price right pro tools is currently 599 and that's only a year of updates cubase is 587.98 for the full pro version object pro is more reasonable at 199 and reaper wins this category easily at 60 dollars that probably makes you think something is up right you get what you pay for and all that and why are all the major studios using pro tools and usually they get what you pay for adage is totally spot on but in this case it's not really true as i said in truth bomb number two there you pretty much get the same thing with all the daws as far as features go so why are the major studios all using pro tools well to answer that you have to go deep into the past it was the late 90s and musicians were just starting to discover that recording music on a computer was like a word processor compared to a typewriter was so much easier but studio engineers had invested years and years and decades into learning all this complicated equipment and hardware and when they transited over to computers a lot of the logic and layout of it didn't really make sense to them so when pro tools came out the designers of it were smart enough to put it together in such a way that the layout and the logic of using it made a lot of sense to use the same terminology and engineers who had worked on analog equipment for all those years could really get their heads wrapped around it while some of the other earlier daws were really made by guys with computer nerd brains if you will kind of like me the layouts and use of those doors just made more sense to someone who was more of a computer programmer type person whereas pro tools made perfect sense to someone who was used to having tactile contact with the equipment in front of them and as a result pro tools really caught on and kind of became ubiquitous especially in studios here in the united states and so even though other daws have myriad reasons to be considered at least equal to pro tools because pro tools was so widely used in major studios and still is today engineers like to be able to go back and forth with files and sessions if they're going from one place to another working on projects all right so it's finally time for me to say why i think reaper is the best choice for you at your home studio number one as i said before it costs far less than all of these other daws with all the same features and unless you are looking to port sessions back and forth to a major studio it's not going to get in the way of anything when you're working on your own stuff at home and even if you do need to port some files around you can do something called outputting stems and get all the files there are ways to do it in fact when talking about features i'd like to say that reaper does pretty much everything i've seen every other daw do and then even some more things they really get into the minutia with this daw the only thing i can think of that's a major feature that i like in another daw that i don't see in reaper is something that cubase does which is called vary audio and that is a way mostly to edit vocals and pitch and that kind of thing it's something you can do in melodyne and a couple of other plugins but i just found that very audio is much easier to use and does it better than anything else i've tried number two reason for choosing reaper with all the other daws you have to get used to how they're laid out and get used to the workflow and the graphical user interface with reaper you can go through one of hundreds of different interfaces and they plug in as themes and you can pick the one that works best for you heck you can even make it look like one of the other daws reason number three stability i could do a whole video ranking the daws on how often they crash and what their stability is with various plug-ins and whatnot but i'm just gonna cut right down to the chase reaper is flat out the most crash-free stable daw out there another de facto standard i was talking about i'm not going to say it crashes more than my 90 year old grandmother in our buick but it's definitely got its issues especially if you want to run more than one session at a time new plugins can tend to make daws crash more as software gets released and then updates have to get released to keep up with the changes and nothing gets updated more frequently and granularly if i can say that word correctly than raper oh and by the way as i said before you get all those updates for free and the version updates for free as well at this point i should also mention that i am not sponsored by reaper in any way i'm just another guy who bought the software and really thinks it's good but hey if they see this video and want to send me a free t-shirt i'm all for it reason number four sometimes you're recording what you play just absolutely stinks it's the worst piece of music you've ever written and reaper has you covered with track icons so there it is i could have gotten into really really specific details and gone further with this but the idea behind this video as i said at the beginning is just to help you with you're very first looking to get started with home studio recording and you don't know which daw to get this is my advice for you i do have more to be said about the first setup what kind of hardware to get the sound into the computer and all that i have a video about recording something pro sounding for under 1k i'll link that up here that said i'm going to roll you out here with a piece of music from my spotify channel that was all recorded mixed and mastered right and reaper right here in this room if you're into oodles of guitar rock check it out maybe give me a follow over there on spotify thanks for checking out this vid and i'll see you next time [Music] i'm shaking dark bottle glass from you
