[Music] thank you hey guys and welcome back to another video on Lumber Capital log yard for the past few weeks we have been Milling these Walnut logs that are definitely not the prettiest thing this Mill has cut for those of you who follow the channel you'll know that these logs are riddled with nails but on top of that they are also very dry why should that matter well as it turns out cutting dry wood versus cutting green wood is very different why though that's the question because on this channel we feel that greater understanding of the why and how of things leads to a fuller comprehension in turn you are more capable which allows for more production higher quality product and overall better results if that intrigues you hit the Subscribe button and let's get into the video [Music] thank you [Music] at our Sawmill we primarily work with green wood what some of you might not know is that moisture can actually help make Smooth Cuts that's why we use water as our lubricant for our saw blade we have to get more right now so let's head over and fill it up we collect rain water off of the roof and fill these uh huge jugs so that we have a water supply to use right here close to the mill we do have a well but we have to turn on a generator and all that and because we have to fill it up more than once a day it's still helpful to have these and I think it can probably go unsaid that dry wood lacks moisture but you can see how that would be kind of a reason why maybe Milling dry wood would be more difficult but there's more to it than that dry wood can actually be quite a tricky thing when it comes to Milling because it can actually be a lot more difficult than you might think wood Miser even suggests using a carbide blade to cut through Kiln dried material on their website and the reason for that is that Dr dried wood is just that much more difficult to cut through we're going to be demoing some carbide blades here pretty soon on some hickory so make sure you guys stay tuned for that I'm not however going to use it on this Walnut even though it might be a good application for them do tell the metal in it we won't be able to get nearly as much life out of them using them with this Walnut and they are pretty pricey compared to other blades so we want to make sure to get as much life out of them as possible dry wood fibers are incredibly rigid and that creates a harder structure to cut through it also creates a more friction and heat buildup which in turn will just really prolong the amount of time your blade is cutting and then that's when things just go bad heat also is going to make your blade stretch and that's when it's gonna snap it doesn't always but it can so this all just goes to show that the little bit of moisture that is in green logs or in green wood really does make a difference when Milling it the best way to describe it is that the fibers actually kind of bind and you're going to experience because of that that it actually appears to be kind of harder and I don't actually know if it would rank higher on like the Jenga scale if you were to test it but it definitely does make a difference when you're Milling it and this is why we use basically just a lot of water as lubricant when we're cutting this stuff but it's something that you should be aware of because people do like to repurpose Lumber and sometimes that requires Milling it down to a different size even and so this that's just some of the stuff that you can come across some of the things that you can do to help and yeah in all it's two very different monsters that you're dealing with dry versus green that's it for today's video everyone I hope that you enjoyed if you did make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel if you haven't already but other than that I'll see you guys back here at next time [Music]
