hey everyone so it's time for me to finally address a topic that has been bothering me for a long time which is this popular idea that has gained a lot of traction among the community that the monster trio as we know it is ending because now jinbe is joining the crew some people have been saying that it's now going to be the monster quartet with like luffy zoro sanji and jinbei or worse that luffy is actually out of the monster trio and now it'll be a new trio with zoro sanji and jinbe and as if that's not bad enough some people have started throwing yamato in the mix a character who we have no idea if she's even going to join or not and most people are already slotting her in alongside zoro sanji and jinbe no i would bet all the money i have in the world that the dynamic of luffy zorro and sanji is never going to change and that we will get to the end of wana without jinbe or yamato throwing off this dynamic in any way i'm going to be talking mostly about jinbei throughout this video since he is a confirmed straw hat but everything i say here applies to yamato as well if she does end up joining the crew so to start with i think people drastically underestimate how much oda seems to love the monster trio and before people jump in and say well actually the monster trio isn't even real it's a fan term yes the actual name monster trio is a fan term but it is what we all use to refer to the grouping of luffy zorro and sanji and that in itself is a very real grouping that oda plays up throughout the series just because oda doesn't officially have a name for the grouping and fans have to come up with the name themselves doesn't change the fact that oda makes a big deal out of the trio of luffy zorro and sanji and they actually have been referred to as the three monsters of the crew multiple times in the story so really the fan term monster trio is just readers taking a label oda already threw around and deciding to just use that consistently so no not only does the monster trio exist as i was saying people seem to really underestimate how much oda loves this dynamic if you take a step back and think about it the monster trio is easily easily the most iconic dynamic in all of one piece there is no grouping of characters in the story that comes close to being as frequently highlighted and played up as luffy zorro and sochi this trio is just everywhere all the time throughout the series you see them over and over as the three main combatants of the crew that oda puts the spotlight on ahead of everyone else when it comes to fighting and you might be thinking okay sure that's true but that doesn't necessarily mean oda can't add another character to the mix well it kind of does if you look at how oda set the core dynamic for the story from the start the story starts with five main characters the legend begins once these five characters are assembled everything before this was really just the prologue of the story that was the significance of them literally departing from log town the town of beginning yes we have the main straw hats but these five are the main main straw hats and you'll notice that even if other straw hats get certain arcs where they get really shine or have big story lines these five will pretty much always consistently have important running story lines in any major arc they get the lion's share of the screen time panel time dialogue and story focus and if you look at these five and think about them in terms of strength it's clear that oda took the basic framework for how he wanted the combat dynamic for the crew overall to be and stuck with it he never wavered from the start we had the main character who was the strongest then two characters who were similarly superhumanly strong to him and then two characters who were physically weak normal humans the main character basically has two friends who can stand shoulder to shoulder with him in battle and then two friends who are more relatable normal human characters that serve a very different role in the story and as we added more and more characters this core dynamic never changes notice that anyone who is added is always weaker than zoro and sanji but stronger than nami and usopp i mean we already know that oda didn't have every straw hat clearly planned out from the start but in any early iteration of the crew you see this core group of five was always his constant after deciding on these five he could build and embellish the story and add more characters to the main cast from there on but the foundation is the dynamic of these five and that hasn't changed to this day nami and usof are deliberately the weakest because they can bring a different dimension to the story by being normal humans nami is the rational guiding mother figure for luffy amongst a gang of super-powered freaks and usopp is luffy's best friend by having two human companions like this we can get a lot more grounded and real interactions throughout this series at the same time zoro and sanji are on the opposite end of the spectrum where they were always written to be luffy's left and right hand men in battle and yeah fans kind of tossed around the term you know left and right hand but it's true that is genuinely what we are shown in the story in every situation where luffy cannot do enough on his own he's stuck or outmatched or taken out of the picture for the moment that is zorro and sanji's role specifically to be able to stand in for him and do what must be done until their captain is back on his feet and yes that's true of the entire crew to a degree but it's doubly so for these two in particular there's this secondary burden that they both carry that is unique to them like when they just need to survive until luffy is free to fight arlon zorro and sanji are the last line of defense to make that happen when the crew is overwhelmed and luffy can't protect them from the marines it falls on zoro and sanji to each be able to take a part of the crew under their wing when luffy is knocked out and the entire crew has already shown that they are willing to sacrifice themselves for him only to get knocked out as well there is still this secondary burden of zorro and sanji specifically where they still have to get back up and they alone have to remain as the two remaining pillars to protect the rest that's their job throughout the entire series that's who they are to luffy just as usop and nami are his weakest most human companions zoro and sanji are the two that are his right and left hand who can not only stand shoulder to shoulder with him in battle but also be able to pick up the burden of the captain when he cannot do it himself this dynamic that the three of them share is one of the cornerstones of the entire series oda literally chose to reunite the entire crew after two years specifically by having luffy first meet up with zoro and sanji and then the three of them as a trio coming together to complete the crew this is not a dynamic that oda is just going to randomly throw in the trash 1 000 chapters into the series just for the sake of mixing it up it's the same way usop's not getting replaced as luffy's best friend no female companion is ever going to override nami no one is taking the position of second strongest from zorro some dynamics are just integral to who the character is and their place in the story not to mention in fishman island we still got zoro and sanji acting as luffy's right and left hand despite jinbe already being in that arc like sure jin may haven't officially joined the crew yet but this was his arc so it's worth noting at least in my opinion now all that being said why did this notion of jinbe joining the monster trio start in the first place well it's two reasons mainly so first is that you know jinbe is strong i don't want to get into the technicals of how strong he is a brief recap we know he tied with a young ace jinbe was a difficult opponent for luffy early on jinbe was portrayed as stronger than a voided up already and he punched a weakened big mom off the ship at the same time it was clear he's not in the same league as admirals or even someone like katakuri so we're to put him among the crew it's hard to say because we haven't gotten the fights of the arc yet usually after we get the fights we get a clear understanding of how oda implies the straw hat hierarchy is based on who gets matched up with who as it is right now though it definitely looks like jinbe could be potentially comparable to zoro and sanji i've seen people saying he's even stronger than both of them at the moment so obviously at the end of the day jinbe is going to be changing up the dynamic of the monster trio right wrong this is where being a long time weekly reader comes into play because i speak knowing the history of how these things have gone before because we've seen this all before when robin first joined the crew nobody knew where she fell in the rankings she was second in command from baroque works she had a broken devil fruit she had a huge bounty it was hard to say how strong she was you even had her being grouped together with luffy zorro and sanji but at the end of the day a few arcs down the line did anything about this monster trio dynamic change no and i admit i actually wasn't a weekly reader back when robin specifically joined but i caught up and became a weekly reader during annie's lobby and let me tell you everything that you're seeing now with jinbe all this discussion and speculation of how he's going to affect the monster trio was exactly the same with frankie literally exactly the same because frankie was seriously portrayed as a powerhouse from water 7 through any slobby the first fight he had was with luffy where frankie actually looked a little bit better than him frankie was the first character to make any cp9 members sweat and it looked like he could have legitimately taken bluno during the c train battles frankie really looked like a beast he took on the strongest opponent and was the first to beat a cp9 member while sanji was still messing around with wanzi if you go back and re-read that arc you would have been absolutely convinced that frankie was easily monster trio level and definitely above sanji only then what happened we finally get to the fights and it immediately became clear that no no way oda is going to change the monster trio dynamic turns out zoro and sanji's opponents are several times stronger than frankie's and the status quo was maintained where it's the monster trio and then everyone else because that's all that happens yes if we get a new craft crew member especially a strong one then they may be made to even look better than zoro or sanji briefly but ultimately all oda does is move the monster trio several steps forward to maintain that status quo and the timing of jinbe's return is very interesting because oda seems to have specifically brought him back in the arc where we are finally going to get a bunch of serious fights for the straw hats so oda practically kept jinbe away from the crew till it was time for the big battles where luffy zoro and sanjay will inevitably be getting big upgrades basically all we've had is an extended frankie situation where there is a strong prospective crew member who looks like he could insert himself into the monster trio but once it's time for the big fights oda will just be upgrading the monster trio to put them in their own category again i've seen this movie before and yes people can say well jinbe is different because this is a warlord of the sea we're talking about that's way different than frankie or robin relative to where we're at now in the story no it's not yeah like back in alabasta if a warlord were joining that would be insane but we're at a point now in the story where you know yonko and admirals and even yonko commanders are just generally a bigger deal like just being a warlord doesn't mean that much on its own anymore i'd say jinbe's addition to the crew is even less significant than when robin was added back in alabasta i'm talking relative to the time period because as of the chapter that robin joined she was actually one of the strongest known characters in one piece period think about that baroque works was by far the biggest organization the straws had gone up against and miss all sunday was not only one of their strongest members she was easily one of the strongest villains in the entire series up to that point with like the third highest bounty that was known in the world at that point but it didn't really matter she didn't make the cut for the monster trio in the long run here's the thing even if jinbe is roughly comparable to zoro and sanji now luffy zoro and sanji all have some of the fastest growth rates out of any characters in the story they're all young they improve fast and they're completely new to the new world so they have a lot of room to grow still jinbe is in his 40s that alone isn't a big deal like obviously characters can still get stronger if they're middle-aged like brooke's still improving in his 90s but with jinbe it's a little different because it's the fact that he's in his 40s and he's already a long time new world veteran he's not some up-and-comer this is like his third pirate crew he's served as a shichibukai he's fought for multiple emperors at this point he's gone through plenty of big battles he's had extended duels it really really doesn't make sense for him this late in the game to suddenly start improving because he joined the straw hats and he would have to really rapidly improve if he's going to keep up with the monster trio like zoro by the end of the story is going to be stronger than mihawk which is a really really high bar like oda himself refers to mihawk in the same breath as guys like white beard and shanks do you think jinbe is going to end up around there like can we acknowledge how little sense it would make for jinbe all of a sudden after decades of being active in the new world to just magically jump up to like admiral level in the next couple hundred chapters the fact that we're going to be seeing luffy zoro and sanji taking on top tier characters so soon already feels you know really fast even for them but we can excuse it to a degree because you know they're young they're talented they have fast growth rates they're about to get a lot of experience under their belt you know we could see them leveling up to leapfrog a lot of established powerful characters in the span of you know a few hundred chapters that's that's fine i guess but jinbe doesn't really make a lot of sense i think the much more likely case is that jinbei is probably about as strong already as he's going to get maybe improves a little bit but he doesn't really need to get a lot stronger by the end of the series he's already an experienced fighter who is a solid late game addition to the pirate king's crew i find it way more likely that we see guys like frankie catching up to jinbe by the end of the series while the monster trio continues to pull much further ahead than everyone else but the real big argument that people bring up for why it makes sense for the monster trio as we know it to end here for luffy to leave the trio and be replaced by jinbe is the argument that well this is what the other yonko crews are like after all pretty much every yonko crew at least looking at the original four they all have this very similar structure of three elite commanders underneath the captain and in all these cases the captain is significantly above their three commanders it's arguably been implied that an entire yonko crew together could not defeat their yonko captain but what about the fact that yonko crews have this structure doesn't matter the straw hats are their own crew but since i know that won't satisfy a lot of you look if you really really want to compare them to another crew then there's really only one crew that makes sense and that's the pirate king's crew and guess what roger didn't have three commanders he had rayleigh and skopper gabon he had a right and left hand man it wasn't really scopper and this dude so come on like i'm surprised people try so hard to fit the scribe's crew structure into something it's not just based on the yonko but then at the same time somehow ignore what the pirate king's crew was like because it sure looks like roger had a right and left hand man it looks like there was a monster trio situation going on here if you want the straws to parallel any crew structure if you need them to parallel some cruise structure then at least look at the one that actually makes sense like luffy's not trying to be yonko he's going well beyond that he's not going to leave his right and left hand man in the dust his crew is going to be a little more impressive than that like yeah the yonko have three commanders that are way beneath them but luffy is literally going to have the world's strongest swordsman as his first mate it's just a different caliber of subordinates we're talking about here so bottom line jinbei or yamado or whatever they're not going to be messing up the monster dynamic it will always be luffy zoro and sanji as their own special grouping and if you enjoyed
