sponsored by Squarespace one of the questions I get asked the most whenever I post a new tutorial is who is your daddy and what does he do no they're asking but how long did it take and well I don't know and I also don't care because all I'm trying to do is have fun with painting I do understand that speed is a concern for miniature painters all you have to do is look at the videos that perform well on YouTube and I do understand the desire to know how long certain Styles take and I also get that if a mja looks decent there's the assumption that it took 10 hours or longer to get it to that level now if you feel lost in the eternal struggle that is balancing speed versus quality the solution isn't to not care how your Miniatures look at all because a miniature that took 15 minutes to paint will always look like a miniature that took 15 minutes to paint come on do it now kill me but believe it or not you can care about how your Miniatures look and paint them fast at the same time well what are these magical approaches that you're speaking of I hear you ask and the spare not because I want to make a couple of videos looking at my and other popular approaches and rate them by some of these metrics on screen so they become somewhat comparable and you can decide on your own which of them you want to try out or not in this first video I'm going to use an approach that I never really tried before which means using oil paints pre-shading and some other fancy techniques that are generally considered fast and especially fast compared to my Grim dark Approach at least according to my comment section this comparison is going to be the subject of the next video and it will most likely be a bit of an eyeopener for some people or for me I wanted to try this approach on one of the new Terminator model these walking tanks are some of my favorite models ever and they would have a lot of big surfaces to work with especially after I got rid of some of the icons because I just prefer working with decals and after I created a quick but interesting base I primed the model white with a rattle can among some of the things I never tried before is a magenta underpainting to shade yellow establishing the Shadows quickly with the airbrush now you don't have to do this you can shade yellow with different Browns and orange tones after you applied a solid layer of yellow just like I did in my Grim dark Imperial fist video but the upside here is is that you can correct the gradients or maybe you lost too much of your highlight color and you can just reestablish it by reapplying white now there won't be a video with extra footage this time but you'll be able to find a PDF painting guide on my Paton suit this step was so fast it's kind of [Music] unreal only took me 10 minutes to establish all the shading and midtones and it would only take 3 minutes more to achieve the Finish Yellow by adding a layer of Imperial fists contrast paint on top and the result looks amazing too the only thing I would maybe change is to make the pre-shading a bit more subtle making the magenta a bit lighter because while I personally like the result I know a lot of people will say this is too orange for anything Imperial fist related at this point I invested some time into Edge highlights and this is when the armor starts to really come together Edge highlighting agsd readability and add that final punch of credibility to the gradients and the panel definition we already established next up I added decals and I won't dwell on this too much because if you know my videos by now you know that I'm a sucker for decals that have that painted on look and that look like they are part of the armor so after I placed them I made sure to use the solvents and the microso to flatten out the calls over these round surfaces so they would conform better using a cutton swab in a rolling motion will make sure you get rid of all air bubbles too and avoid that pesky silvering of the decal not going to lie the step took a lot of time but I think the result is just worth it time to talk about the chapter I had in mind for this Terminator a concept that I always liked a lot and that I like to play with in previous videos was the champions of a chapter forming some elet Brotherhood of veterans nothing screams badass as much as the Templar brethen concept of the Imperial fists during the 30k area of Warhammer I know that they're not a thing anymore in Warhammer 40K but black and white detail on yellow armor sign me up for that I found this one Templar cross decoil that was half black and half white in the black Templar upgrade kit and I knew I wanted to do something with it it was the perfect reason for creating a power fist that matched the colors dividing it into a black and a white half each I used masking tape to get a proper straight line and speaking about trying new things you can tell by the non-sticky part at the beginning of my role that I never used used masking tape ever and after I applied the tape I made sure to cover everything around the fist with some masking partty so there would be no overspray from using the black and white through the airbrush after the black was consistent I added a little turquoise and sprayed the Highlight before I switched the tape and covered the black part so I could spray the white obviously starting from a gray color so I could highlight with pure white neither I'm stupid or my masking tip was trash but even after trying to correct the initial wonky line while masking off the air for the white and taking extra care to not have the paint creep underneath I still had to correct this line a little with a brush and people still wonder why I usually don't bother and do this by hand from the start nah definitely stupid after some quick Edge highlights I applied the decal and made sure the Black and White House line up up perfectly and then added some skull decals for additional details then I used the sponge to apply chipping to the edges of the panels with yellow and also added some chips to the outer areas to make the armor look more alive and finally I also created some damage over the deuts the chipping looks particularly good in areas that are shaded because it contrasts nicely against the darker orange brown I also added some wear to the black and white mainly to the front of the Power Fist where you would find a lot of mechanical wear due to the nature of how punching Works finish out the chipping on the fist I also damaged up the white Parts with black to make it look like the white was painted on last I used the same colors I applied to the fist on a black Bolter casing quickly highlighting it up and I also laid down the base for the metal part [Music] Parts at this point I prepared the surface for the pin washing with oils by adding two layers of gloss coat making sure the first layer was dry before I applied the second one I ordered a couple of up tyon oil paints a while ago and grabbed the dark gray and burn umber thinning it down with some odorless thinner and then using a very small brush to avoid too much spill I let the mix run in to the [Music] recesses the steel parts were particularly quick and looked really nice with just one coat while I shaded most of the dark recesses and the steel parts with Starship filth I went with the umber oil paint on the yellow parts that were more exposed to stay with the Hue I also wanted to try streaking with oil paint so I dabed on spots of oil paint all over the surface and especially on damaged edges and other areas where Grime and filth would collect due to exposure during longer periods of fighting I got myself a few weathering brushes by AK interactive but it was pretty obvious immediately that the fan brush was too big and I had to redo most of it from scratch wiping everything off with a swap I tried a couple of other brushes as you can see but it seemed like my surfaces were just too small for taking the random approach and I more or less had to drag each of these dots out individually to make it look good which really didn't help with speed at all ultimately this chiseled brush worked not too bad in combination with a really small triple Zero Brush and I just dragged out each of these dots individually I quickly painted the base in A Worn and weeted look and this took a while but I didn't count it for see total time because if you just wanted to be quick you could just pre-make a couple of simple bases that take 3 minutes each after all of that was done I applied two Thin layers of ultramat varnish to seal the streaking and get rid of of the shine and about 2 hours and 50 minutes all that was left to do was a few details like the Purity seals and the lenses of the eye and I used the quickest way I knew for this trying to build volume and everything finally clocked in at just about 2 hours and 32 minutes and this is the breakdown funny enough building The Bu of color including Edge highlights took just as long as applying the cols and creating the bulk of the Fist surprisingly applying base colors neatly always takes ages something that is not really a factor with my Grim dark approach for example but here it's definitely a factor another interesting experience was that washing with oils is fast but can be messy to correct and the streaking took a lot longer than I expected probably due to the model not being a tank or dreadnut sized so let's talk about what I think the strengths and weaknesses of this approach are what problems I ran into and what my overall ranking is and since I just showed you a breakdown of how much time all the elements took let's start with the first category first of all I think a lot of this time can be shaved off by switching to batch paint this approach takes a lot of airbrush preparing cleaning and switching between oil paints and regular acrylics so I'm pretty confident we can easily assume that you can save 30 minutes per model because prep time is divided among a large number of models which puts us at just about 2 hours per model which I consider a reasonable time for something that looks really good that's why I would put it smack in the middle at 5 out of 10 simply because I'd say there is ways to paint that take a lot longer but also approaches that are faster if you're fine with compromising on quality let's go to difficulty which means how easy is the approach to execute how difficult is it to learn and how many tools do you need to execute it which is always a big factor in my opinion so here we have a lot of what I call technical painting that doesn't take a lot of brush skills the way that building a gradient with glazes would take for example and what I mean by that is as long as you can train yourself to work neatly and carefully in theory you will nail this relatively fast there's still pitfalls though for example I should have definitely applied at least one more layer of gloss varnish because you can really see how some of these areas are being stained by the oils even after rubbing it off uh with a cotton swab immediately and speaking about that oh boy I feel like trying to fix smoothness and cleaning up oil paint with these swaps is way harder and much more time intense than applying a recess wash with acrylics or contrast paint especially if you drown the model in oil paint you will spend ages to clean it up and even if you are careful sometimes you will rub off too much and you have to reapply it and then wait for it to dry and you also need to change the swap so much and then there's filament getting everywhere even though I'm using these Bots that are especially made for cleaning models in short I think all of this is easy to learn but I think you need to nail all the steps to make the most of it and last but not least you do need a lot of tools airbrushes are given but then you also need the oil paints thinner regular acrylics and ink or contrast paint to stain the gradient you also need a variety of brushes like we saw with the streaking or the pin washing so in general I would rate this 7 out of 10 but having to use so many different tools and paints and how much you have to switch between each of them and also the sum of different mediums that you have to learn bumps it down to 5 out of 10 for me the end result looks really good especially considering that it didn't take that long it surely has some quirks that are probably difficult to get rid of completely especially for a messy painter like me but I definitely take an army that looks like this overall I'd give the end result an8 out of 10 so last point and I'm going to keep this as a bonus category only because fun is always subjective what this fun to paint uh I feel a lot of the enjoyment of this really comes from seeing the final product and really liking it when I paint I want to be creative and use Dynamic brush Strokes lots of different delusions and layers on top of each other to build something interesting using methodical painting like this is not very fun to me per se but I enjoyed aspects of it like building the initial gradients with the airbrush maybe this is just a novelty Factor who knows I want to give this a 6 out of 10 on the fun Factor kind of neglect the fact that probably everything you do becomes a little monotonous if you do it on 50 models or more so that's my final verdict if you ever try this approach or if you have already tried something similar let me know what your own rating would be in the comments below and don't
