here's what I'm gonna go tonight last Wednesday I spoke a message why I think you're frustrated if you haven't had a chance yet I'd love for you to consider watching some of it tonight a week later I like to do a sermon entitled why I think you're tired well I think you're tired now it's immediately you're like ah man I tuned in I'm not tired I'm energized and I'm full of all kinds of emotion and passionate energy the last thing I am is tired this would be one of those sermons that will serve you well when you do experience a weariness or a tiredness moment not just talking about physical weariness or it's a sense of tiredness but also internal emotional spiritual why am I tired we talked about frustration now we're talking about why we're tired I in the future probably this Sunday I'd love to preach a message maybe on why I think you're sad maybe a message on why I think you're mad and just talk about some of the dynamics that we're experiencing right now in the world and there is so much parallel to the story of God the story of Jesus and it will shed light on what we're all experiencing some title of my message tonight today this morning in the middle of night wherever you are in the world watching is why I think you're tired we're gonna begin reading in Matthew chapter 16 and these we will pick up again words that we have read last Wednesday we're gonna pick it up again it says this in matthew 16 and verse 21 then on from then on Jesus began to clearly reveal to his disciples to 12 guys he was working with that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer injustice from the elders leading priests and religious scholars he also explained that he would be killed and three days later would be raised to life again Peter took him aside Peter is one of the twelve probably the oldest of the twelve guys took Jesus aside listeners now and corrected him privately beware when you're correcting God just saying he reprimanded Jesus over and over the passion translation says saying this god forbid master spare yourself you must never let this happen you cannot be crucified you cannot die that can't be the plan don't do that in fact we won't let it happen and you shouldn't let it happen and then we get maybe the most raw real candid confrontation from Jesus ever Jesus turned to Peter and said and I quote get out of my way you Satan or stumbling block or enemy or adversary or opposition you are an offense to me because your thoughts please hear me your thoughts are only filled with man's viewpoints and not the ways of God then Jesus said his disciples picking up now words we studied even last week if you truly want to follow me Jesus said you should at once completely reject and disown your own life and you must be willing to share my cross and experience it as your own as you continually surrender to my ways for if you choose to self-sacrifice and lose your lives for my glory you will continually discover true life but if you choose to keep your lives for yourselves you will forfeit what you try to keep for even if you were to gain all the wealth and power that this world has to offer with everything it could offer you at the cost of your own life what good would that be in other words you trade the well-being of your internal life your soul for stuff and things and possessions and what could be more valuable to you than your own soul it has been decreed that i the son of man jesus says will one day return with my angels and in the splendor and majesty of my father and here's the key phrase that we're gonna investigate tonight and then I will reward I'm going to come back Jesus says and I will reward or repay each person according to what they have done I will repay I will reward Jesus says each person when I return according to what they have done why I think you might be spiritually tired why I think you might be emotionally tired why I think you might be mentally tired I want to explain I think this verse is gonna help us jump into this topic we join me in prayer God thank you we just pause everything tonight as we gather as a community all over the world a global mobile community we just press pause now and we acknowledge that without your activity your involvement your reality your manifestation during these minutes and moments this is just a speech and we certainly need more than words and concepts we need you Jesus you're the person that we need we love you we thank you for it help sports to start again so in Jesus name Amen amen amen amen Wow the last dance is I'm loving it but I'm not going to go there with a conversation last night with our friends and jealous and I about the last days have you ever had a conversation that turns into a disagreement in fact it intensifies and it begins to grow in its intensity and its heat and its passion its fervor and all of a sudden you're in this conversation and the person you are conflicted with or conversing with or disagreeing with suddenly ends the whole conversation ends the whole disagreement with something that says with something something like this that's not what I was saying and you're like wait what I thought you said that you hate my outfit and they're like that's not what I said and you're like oh my goodness for the last 15 minutes I've been defending my outfit or I've been defending my perspective and the whole time we were in agreement that ever happened to you you are you married because if you are married that's happened you 26 thousand times that's called marriage if someone asked me right now do to define marriage it's a disagreement only to realize that's not what your spouse that's not the definition of merit that's terrible haha I've defined the whole of marriage as a disagreement oh man but a lot of people you love deeply and dearly that you're close with an intimate and have great relationship with isn't amazing that you can still be ships in the night passing as you are vehemently defending your view only discover your wife your husband wasn't even saying that to begin with and you're like oh and all of a sudden it's kind of all the fervor all the passion all the feelings kind of dissipating you're like wow a couple times I have still kept disagreeing and Chelsea's like you disagree with now you ever just wanted to disagree and then when they're like I'm not disagreeing I agree with you and you're like no don't do that I really need to disagree right now it feels good to fight so I have actually continued to pursue fighting sometimes with jealousy even when she's like I agree with you what are you fighting about I'm like I just need to get my point across that brings that that example brings me to the story of God because I actually think that experience happens a lot with Scripture happens a lot with the story of God I prefer to call the Bible the story of God because I believe in fact that is exactly what it is it is again that this scripture is not intended to be a collection of morals and principles and concepts and success keys it is a story about a main character his name is Jesus and he's God and the whole universe in the world revolves around him it's the story of God and it's amazing to me how upon reading the story of God you can believe that God is saying something and absolutely get worked up about it and and take it and run only discover this has happened to me after years of believing God said this upon further investigation God's like I never said that it's not what I meant at all hello and you're like oh right and that brings us to Matthew 16 and verse 27 he says I am come again and I'm going to repay I'm going to reward every single person for what they've done first of all reading that verse is like wait what right if you've listened to the gospel and you're familiar at all with the story of Jesus there's this concept that people think is merely a principle but actually it's a definition of the character of God and the person of God it's this concept called grace grace is a person not a principle it really is Jesus and grace is categorically the unearned unmerited undeserved gift of God which is forgiveness and relationship with God not through our efforts and our deeds but the work of Jesus and yet it's that same Jesus who is the definition of grace and goodness and forgiveness and love and mercy and acceptance he says hey I'm gonna come back and when I come back I'm going to give everyone a repayment based on what they've done and you're like oh that's exciting or it's not or suddenly you're like wait a minute this is all gonna culminate with me standing before God and God saying hey 92 was a rough year for you wasn't it hey who during that quarantine 2020 I got a list of a lot of them things you did when you were all by yourself right I mean is that what you envisioned when I read that verse of scripture I'm like oh wait a second I don't know if I want God to revisit my high school years you know like what I'm gonna get repaid for what I have done now one of the great tools of understanding what God is saying is a rule called context putting things in their context helps us understand the meaning of what's being said so let's go back now let's try to understand a little bit of the context of what Jesus might be saying because when I read verse 27 oftentimes like a conversation with my wife what I hear is this life is about trying hard doing better working really hard so that when Jesus splits the sky and returns with by the way tattoos on his thighs and a beautiful horse and he comes back he's gonna look at me and say Judah I have a list of everything you've done and I'm gonna tell you right now the list of the bad dumb stuff I've done is way longer than a list of the good smart stuff I've done it just is and so I read that verse and go I'll tell you what it's not it's not good news and the Bible says the word gospel means literally news that's good I read verse 27 of Matthew 16 and it's Jesus in red and he says I'm gonna come back and I am gonna give you what I give you based on what you've done and I'm like well that sounds like normal news that sounds like average news sounds like below average news I don't want that what in the world could Jesus actually be saying well the whole conversation starts in what we now call verse 21 it says Jesus began to reveal to his 12 guys Peters there he says I'm gonna suffer in Jerusalem the leading priests religious scholars and elders in other words the the Church of the day will be the catalyst to ensure that this happens I'm gonna be killed but three days later I'm going to beat death and I'm gonna rise again now one of the twelve Peters listening now Peter again is probably the only disciple over 21 years old he's kind of the he definitely talks the most out of the twelve okay he gets the most airtime the most camera time one of the most awkward scenes we've ever seen in all of scripture in the story of God Peter literally pulls God aside you ever wanted to have a sidebar with God he pulls God aside and he says this can't happen in fact the Bible says he kept saying it he kept saying it he kept saying it but you can't Jesus listen you can't die we need you to live forever your God you can't clearly Peter and the guys have missed that he just said I'm gonna die but I'm going to rising in right Jesus says something to Peter that I think is so appropriate and it may very well unearth and uncover for you and me why we might be experiencing a little weariness in our spiritual journey and our internal life he says Peter you are an adversary right now he's not saying you're always an adversary he says right now you're working against me right now you are being used like a stumbling block he's not saying that Peters possessed with Satan he's just saying you are functioning as an opposition to me Peter's like I'm on opposition to you I'm just saying please don't die momentum is growing we're gathering the crowds people love you let's overthrow Rome let's establish your presidency let's establish your kingship isn't that what we're doing and he says step aside and then he says this about Peter please hear me he says you are only seeing things from man's perspective or viewpoint I love it's how it says in the English standard version the ESV he says you were only seeing the things of men you are not seeing the things of God he says Peter you don't understand what I'm saying please hear me now you don't understand what I'm saying we're like ships in the night passing you're not picking up on what I'm laying down because you're knee-jerk your first thought is me first man first me first man first me first man first for instance when I read that scripture verse 27 in Matthew 16 and I said Jesus will return and he will pay you and me according to what we have done who's the first person you thought about I'd like to suggest you I bet you thought about you I thought about me when I read verse 27 of Matthew 16 I'm like wait I'm a beat wait what hold on what I'm gonna be repaid for what I've done how no and so begins an exhausting spiritual life believing that this spiritual journey is trying to live up to these unreachable standards of God in which the nation that God built Israel attempted for thousands of years and could not do it and they numbered over 600 laws but now for some odd reason we believe that what Jesus is saying is I - my whole life is gonna culminate in what I have done I will be judged and all of a sudden a little tingle go down just goes down your spine and you're like I'm in trouble and what settles in is what we believe is the fear of God which is the fear of Terror and something bad might happen in my life if I don't do good and my brothers and sisters if I can be honest that summarizes what often times feels like the majority of people's Christianity I gotta try hard where my sunday clothes speak my Sunday speech stuff like praise God hallelujah amen make sure that I'm not fleshly and I'm holy and I'm godly and I'm kind and and life becomes about me me that what is what is the things of men and what is the things of God can i define it in a really simple way Jesus says to Peter and the reason you didn't hear me just say I'm going to beat death and rise again on the third day the reason all you heard was I'm gonna die is because you're thinking about yourself first and Peter like the twelve guys were pretty pumped with the popularity and the growing following of Jesus and literally actually thought that he would overthrow Rome and establish an actual Empire led by him and Peter I'm sure hope to be the vice president Peter goes this this shouldn't be once you think about this for a moment Peter is opposing the death burial and resurrection of Jesus my brothers and sisters and you know why cuz he thought about himself first and not God first Jesus says you have set your mind on the things of men that is you think about yourself first and you think about people first and you think about your culture first and you think about what is defined as success first you think about renowned first you think about appreciation and honor first you think about yourself first Jesus says you would understand me you would pick up what I'm laying down if you thought God first if you thought creator first if you thought designer first if you thought king of kings and Lord of lords first for instance let me quote to you Matthew 16:27 again Jesus says as it has been declared I will return with my angels the hosts of angels the whole world will see I will split the sky and I will return and I will repay every man and woman according to what they have done now if you read that verse and the first knee-jerk reaction is thinking Jesus first I'm telling he's gonna get you on the path to understand what Jesus is really saying so that you don't pull God aside and tell him not to die on the cross and resurrect the third day I'm telling you a Peter could do it so could I in fact Peter makes a lot of sense if you're honest if you were there with Peter that day and you saw literally one of the most popular people who you adore and love and you're following he's changing the world and he says hey guys it's been a short run I'm gonna die I'm gonna go to Jerusalem I'm gonna die and Peter's like quit talking like that we're not going down we're successful you're great you're powerful you're amazing death is not success we are successful you've made us important this is incredible we're not stopping this we gave up our careers for you you're not going anywhere Peter infers that he will step in and try to stop it which that's right he did he tried to stop the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus why Jesus says because you see the things of men first not the things of God first so then in light of that encounter Jesus turns to all the twelve not just Peter now and he says to the twelve if you want to work with me if you want to walk with me you need to let go of control your life let it go trust me with it relinquish it and then he goes on to say what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but in the process loses sold you see we did there see what he did there he just told you what the things of men focus on and what the things of God focus on see what he just did he told Peter all you think about is yourself and people and their priorities and their gauge and their success first think my waist first and you'll pick up what I'm laying down and he gives us an example the things of men think of what stuff renown stature success what is and we think of that first that's kind of how we gave what are the things of God the things of God are it is the way of letting go your life just like Jesus Jesus does not ask us to do anything he has not done first and we lay down our life Jesus says for my sake and it's there you'll find it and then he says I'm coming back you know and when I return I'm gonna repay everyone according to what they've done okay now we've got a little context exercise in practice what is this context telling us now it's telling us that this this this whole conversation is what again how this conversation start that's right Jesus saying I'm going to the cross hey guys I'm going to the cross but don't worry don't fear three days later I'll I'll rise again Peter goes no way Jesus goes really you're just thinking of it through your viewpoint you don't see it from my viewpoint you haven't picked up what I'm laying down he says Peter this whole world tells you it's all about getting yours while the getting's good it's all about working it working it working it getting the stuff you want the things you want the toys you want the renowned you want the success you want that's what this world just keeps pitching it keeps preaching it keeps declaring that's what and and and but Peter that's not my way but my way is is to die I live to die now I want you to let go of your life and I want my cross to be your cross what does it matter guys what does it matter so you get everything that the things of men preach and teach but in the process you lose your eternal soul that's just foolish it seems that Jesus is saying that's not a fair trade the things of men preach stuff and the things of God preached so as if stuff and soul are peers they are not and I wonder if one of the reasons often times we find ourselves spiritually weary is because we allow the trade to happen consciously or unconsciously we accept an unfair trade we diminish the state of our soul its lack of buoyancy or overall health and we focus on my stuff my things and frankly the very normal and average things all around us which every single day tell us this is what you want Jesus speaks these same similar words in what is John's Gospel and I want to read this to you go with me to John's Gospel read it in the passion translation similar words now listen to the words of Jesus and an effort to understand and unpack just a little bit further we're going to two more scriptures and then we'll be done for the evening Jesus says now is the time for the Son of man to be glorified translation now is the time for me to go to the cross it's all about the cross it's all about the cross let me make this clear let me make this clear a single grain of wheat will never be more than a single grain of wheat unless it drops into the ground then dies because then it sprouts and produces a great harvest of wheat all because one grain died two things Jesus is referencing number one he is the ultimate grain he's the ultimate seed that will die and he will bring forgiveness to all who will receive but it goes on and says Jesus now same passage saying the person who loves his life and pampers himself will miss true life so the grain is not just its first and foremost we think God first Jesus first its Jesus but then it's also giving us a picture if we will let self die if we will let selfishness self-serving looking out for me buying into stuff and things and possessions and renowned and all the things my social media tells me I need every day in this quarantine every day every day I hadn't been a day that I'd looked at social media and thought what do I feel built up encouraged and totally secure as a person I don't think there's been a day that that's what Instagram served me it's quite often the opposite not doing enough and he'd try harder and he'd do better I wonder I wonder maybe if that's why we're weary and tired he goes on and he says the one who detaches his life from this world and abandons himself to me will find true life and enjoy it for ever if you want to be my disciple Jesus says follow me and you'll go where I'm going you're gonna go where I'm going Church home we're going where Jesus is going not where Judah is going not with the board of elders is going where Jesus is going that's where we're going down the mountain into the valley that's where we're going and he says and if you truly follow me as my disciple the father will shower his favor upon your life I want to say something we because we think things of men first and not things of God first when things die we think loss we think less we think defeat we don't think success we don't think multiplication but the ways of Jesus are different Church home he says let it die I wonder if you're weary trying to resuscitate something Jesus wants you to let go up I'm telling you the things of God teaches us to think Jesus first God first and by the way that is an awesome place to live because it's there he's joke as easy as burden is light it's not on you in Matthew 16:27 when Jesus says I will return again and I will repay every man woman boy and girl according to what they have done that is another passage that is bringing you in me to the end of ourselves this is a classic approach of Jesus we're all supposed to read Matthew 16:27 and go oh no I don't know that's not good news that's why the whole passage is about the cross for the cross is where Jesus will do for you and for me what we cannot do on our own for the Bible says all have sinned all have been selfish all have served themselves and all have missed the rules and standards of God so Jesus came fully God fully man tempted in every way we were tempted he lived some thirty three and a half years he was perfect with no sin and because he knew no sin and he had no sin though he was tempted in every way we are tempted and yet never compromised and never sinned he could become your sin and he could become my sin and so now at the end of the ages when the great king of kings with the tattoos on his side he splits the sky on a beautiful white stallion and he comes to judge humanity I will stand at attention and I will know that my life is hidden in Christ my high school years are covered the 90s are covered the 2000s are covered I am forgiven and now I will be repaid according to what I have done the Bible teaches I'm hidden in Christ and what Jesus has done is now what I have done and so Matthew 16:27 is a way of Jesus saying he's pointing to what he's about to do and now of course in 2020 what he has already done it's done and now I will repent men and women at the end of the age according to what they have done that's why right before verse 27 Jesus says let it go let it go the doing the trying the striving the worrying let it go you're exhausted you're weary that's why Jesus one of his great invitations is are you tired are you weary are you burned-out is religion leaving you hollow and empty what's religion trying in your own efforts do you better try harder I'm gonna be judged for everything all my brothers and sisters by simply believing in Jesus all the judgment has been exhausted in his body and now verses like Matthew 16:27 when you think Jesus first they only beautify and exemplify for us the dimensions of his extraordinary love goodness and grace let it die I don't know who I'm talking to but I'm talking to somebody unless a grain of wheat like a seed falls in the ground and dies it cannot multiply and I felt like God told me today in preparation for this and I'm supposed to tell some people in church home you are trying to resuscitate what God wants you to let die that is not your identity that is not who you are that does not that job doesn't define who you are doesn't determine your worth that that connection you have in that relationship that you thought was critical and essential to your future and now you're having to let it go that offense you are harboring because you believe that you will have your payback and you will have your justice and God will see that you've been treated wrong let it go let it die let it go and let it die and allow yourself to embrace the viewpoint of God this is a good news this is the good news Matthew 16:27 is not about your doing it points us to his doing and how we can trust or less rest and rely on him one last version or one last portion of scripture I want to read to you and I'm done first Corinthians in chapter 3 and it's a rat listen to it now Paul writes don't fool yourself Church home don't think you can be wise merely by being up-to-date with the times listen to this be God's fool you know what God's fool is 1st Corinthians 2:2 says it Paul has all the Old Testament memorized Paul is a genius and Paul pens this and he goes I've determined to know nothing except Jesus Christ and crucified I'm keeping it simple keeping it simple 1st Corinthians 2:2 that's God's fool that's about Jesus it's not about me it's about Jesus that's God's fool that's the path to true wisdom what the world calls smart God calls stupid what the world calls smart God calls stupid is that clear enough the priorities of the world God generally called stupid the curation of stuff and things and renown and reputation all of which is not inherently wrong it's the need and desire and craving for it that the world tells us that's wisdom that success that's how you'll be remembered God says that what's a stupid way to live it's written in Scripture he exposes the she cannery of the sheik the master sees through the smoke screens of the know-it-alls and I end with this this is it my last scripture I don't want to hear any of you please hear this now bragging about yourself or anyone else bragging about yourself or anyone else everything is already yours as a gift for thing is already no promises let the Corinthians in antiquity thousands of years ago they were starting to develop an ego and pride around so-and-so's my pastor I've accomplished this because we're so good we've done this our church is bigger than yours because we've done and Paul says I don't want to hear any more bragging about yourself you got all that because of Jesus in fact he lists Paul Apollo's Peter the world life death present and future so don't brag about Paul Apollo so Peter Oh brag about the world don't brag about life don't brag about death don't brag about the present don't brag about the future do you know his list includes 8 things 8 is the number of new beginnings oh the number of the list even tells us that Jesus gives us a whole new beginning and way of living which is not ego it's not the things of men it's not thinking of ourselves first it's not focusing on our deeds and when we do we grow tired trying to do enough and be enough and at the end of the age I'm gonna be judged for what I've done so he goes on he says all of it is yours and you're privileged to be in union with Jesus who is in union with God I am with this I think that's the fourth time I've said that which means I'm having a very good time but Matthew 16 uses this word repay you look it up in the Greek it actually would be better translated if you do study on the word as restore please hear this Jesus says I'm coming again and I'm going to restore man according to what he's done well could he be what could he mean well that's what you got to go back to the beginning of creation and what he wants to restore is relationship utopia eternity we're gonna go back to the future real soon church God's gonna restore again a new heaven and the new earth Gardens oceans mountains lakes trees animals beauty utopia and perfection he will restore and he says this according to what you have done i'ma tell you what I've done I have let go of my own doing and I have put my trust in what Jesus has done and the Bible says he will come again and according to what Jesus has done because by simply accepting him I have stepped into and I am hidden in Christ so now I will be restored to a new heaven and a new earth I will spend eternity with Jesus and Paul says you don't get it your whole life's a gift man your whole life's a gift can we just end there church home can we end there tonight I think one of the reasons we get so weary and tired we forget one of the basic observations of creation for where there is creation there is a creator there is a designer there is an architect there is an artist and what's more important than knowing him and being in relationship with him and that's why Paul says to the Corinthians who are bragging and they're thinking about their careers and their success and who they know and who they're around and they brag about their future and they brag about their present and they brag about the past and and their whole life is oriented around the things of men as opposed to the things of God and Paul ends that section in Corinthians by saying is your honor to have a relationship with God is that not the apex of privilege in this life he's not not the top is that not the zenith of the human existence to know the Creator and so a whole new life begins doesn't it now my life cannot merely be defined by the consistency of my possessions in my bank account and my social media following it is defined by the reality that my life is a gift it's a gift from the Creator who did for me what I cannot do for myself and is secured for me eternal life on a new heavens and a new earth and now what do I get to do on my brief stay here on earth in the midst of calamity and pain and problems what do I get to do I get to follow him I get to rely on him i relinquish striving and efforts that lead to ego and let all of that go and my days start with something like this I'm so last I'm so privileged so privileged listen to the words of Paul and you are privileged to be in relationship with Jesus aren't we fickle aren't we funny one of the themes one of the talking points online right now seems like so many of us are frustrated at God and God can handle that have we quite missed the point though have we missed the whole point the points him it's him there's time and place to talk about your career your job I'm tell you right now here at church on we are committed to your lifespan and I'm believing you're gonna flourish in life and I believe in the blessings of God that make is written had no sorrow to it but my brothers and sisters what are the true riches of this life have we not been served the true riches of Christ in the person of Jesus yes we have a blast our way a blessed are we Jesus says to Peter your mind is all focused on the things of men and not the things of God it's not complicated to thank God first things like staying in the story opening this book don't got to read a lot just a little bit and go God first singing songs which we're about to do help set your mind on God first and one of my favorite practices and all of my faith is to speak about the things of God it's just FaceTime friend zoom call somebody and say man we're blessed so privileged I can't believe I know Jesus and if you're watching this and you don't know Jesus how blessed are you tonight this news is no accident this is God's Way of saying hey I have plans to bless you and take care of you the artist and architect of the ages wants a relationship with you and I ask what's more important than that what's more important than that this may very well be why you and I oftentimes find ourselves tired and weary our king is great God is big and he's done for us what we cannot do for ourselves there is rest in Jesus there's a relief of stress in Jesus there's the end of the rat race in Jesus there's relief in Jesus there's the end of striving in Jesus there's the end of comparison and competition and keeping up the Jone up with the Joneses with Jesus life frankly just begins to take shape with Jesus I'm in love with him and he's in love with you can I pray for you got to thank you for these minutes of moments we share studying your story and experiencing you you're amazing everything you do just good whoever you are in the world if you're watching this broadcast and you would like union with Jesus you like a relationship with God it is not by my it is not my power it is not my knowledge it is by Jesus if you'd like to receive the free gift of forgiveness which grants and gives you a relationship with God that will never end you can have that right now in a moment what's this moment consist of letting go letting go you're no longer in charge no longer calling the shots if any man wants to come be with me Jesus says he will go where I'm going so that's the rest of our life now we're gonna go with Jesus what an honor and what a privilege you'd like that what I'm gonna do is on the count to three wherever you are this may sound odd but I want you to do an exercise and practice with me that I think will just reiterate to you the validity and reality of what you're doing on the count of three I'm gonna ask you to lift up your hand wherever you are and then put it right back down if you'd like to receive the free gift of forgiveness in a relationship with God forever and ever one two three if that's you just slip up your hand you can put it right back down god I thank you you see these hands we are forgiven for ever and now this extraordinary life with God begins
