what's up job hunters I'm Jonathan from maple career here with another interview guide today we'll be covering the question why haven't you heard back after your interview so you finished your interview not too long ago and you were told by HR or your interviewer that you would hear back but it's been a while since then and still no word what's going on did you make a big mistake that you weren't aware of did an incredible can that catch their eye instead of you or was your interview just bad those are all reasons that we tend to think about because when it comes to interviews we often fear the worst but let's think about the likely possibilities instead of the scary ones first we need to determine what happened after your interview as an interviewee it often seems that most companies operate inside a black box when it comes to selecting candidates for interviews but actually there is quite a common practice across many different companies and it goes like this first after each interview the interviewer gets a survey from HR to evaluate the performance of each and every interviewee after all the rounds of interviews HR collects and summarizes all the evaluations and then decides on the first second and third candidates then HR in the hiring manager select a salary package based on the candidates backgrounds and afterwards HR releases the offer through a phone or email and usually this is around the time that HR told you that they would get back to you however many delays can happen at this stage for example if the candidate takes longer than expected to decide or wants to negotiate their salary this can drag the process a week or two later and if the company's first choice falls through HR will reach out to the second candidate and the whole process restarts if you're in line as one of the top candidates it can take longer if the can is before you are taking their time now that we know what goes on after your interview we need to learn what role HR plays HR often receives the most complaints and takes responsibility when an interview doesn't go well for the candidate but often the interview timeline is largely out of their control in fact although many grads think that HR is the most important factor of the process this is not true usually HR are actually not the final decision-makers what they do is connect the candidate to the hiring manager it's actually the hiring manager that has the power to decide the job responsibilities the criteria of judging candidates and eventually choosing the candidate so if HR tells you that they will get back to you by a certain time they are giving you an estimate out of kindness but they can't control that at the end of the day so if HR hasn't gone back to you yet consider that there would be other candidates or the hiring manager who are holding them back from providing a definite answer of course one other reason you didn't hear back could be that you are rejected many companies do not send out rejection messages or calls so the only way to know for sure is to follow up and if you don't hear back after a long time chances are you are not selected in the meantime what can we do except for waiting I would suggest that you don't spend your time worrying about things that you might have done wrong instead spend your time applying for other jobs and keeping opportunities come in you can also follow up with HR just not too often once a week is acceptable but every day not so much as an example at Maple career we've written a follow up message template that you can use for example dear mr. or mrs. X I enjoyed meeting you last week and wanted to share how excited I am about this opportunity is there anything else I can forward along to make your hiring decision easier and I'd like to inquire about the process of your hiring decision and the status of my job application I am very eager to hear how the process is going sincerely your name so now that we've covered some possibilities about why you didn't hear back after the interview hopefully it makes you feel a bit better about waiting remember the important thing is to stay calm and carry on from all of us a maple career have a happy job hunt
