one of my favorite pedals ever created is the fuzz face it's amazing but it's hard to get on a pedal board i mean it's arguably one of the largest pedal enclosures ever made i just wish it was smaller whoa that was cool let's check out these mini fuss faces [Music] dunlop makes a lot of great pedals they own a lot of trademarks to vintage things and different brands of the past and they bring those back to life and sometime around 2014 they took the fuzz face trademark that they owned and with two lead engineers george tripps and sam mcrae they took some classic fuzz faces like the blue one from the 70s and shrunk it down into the miniature version these are called the buzzface mini series and this is the first one that i want to show the ffm1 it's a hundred bucks i mean that's like ten dollars ten times it's really achievable this thing sounds fantastic it has this feeling that's more like a distortion that's what i like about silicon transistor fuzzes especially the 70s fuzz faces and this does it very very well so without further ado i'm going to play this i'm going to play my black strap because it looks great and that makes it sound even better than it actually sounds i'm gonna turn on a panther cub just some analog delay and we're gonna jam i don't really know what's gonna happen and you just need to be the judge of it this is like american idol we're on the stage and then you vote if we suck [Applause] [Music] number two is actually called ffm2 it's the germanium fuzzface it's red there are two red ones just note that this one's shiny red and has black knobs that's important if you get into this uh it is based around the classic 1960s germanium so true germanium devices by the way i don't have a red one i don't have a classic red germanium one but i'll be okay [Music] it's 130 which is a killer price it cleans up really nice and also the silicon one cleans up nice if you noticed i did it in that tune i like these i'm going to play the black strat again and i'm going to do this thing where i imagine hendrix is a grunge artist i'm going to call this hendrix grunge you know he was from seattle so it's not too far-fetched [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] next up for 150 is a pretty sweet offering it is the ffm4 joe bonamassa signature it's glossy black there is a big version and i don't have the big version [Music] there's a big eric johnson version that i have but there's not a mini version of eric johnson although i think there might actually be prototypes of that that i'm not supposed to ever mention i don't know maybe i'm starting rumors maybe it doesn't matter but this thing sounds great it has new old stock russian germanium transistors so this is a miniature joe bonamassa signature fuzz face with russian transistors and those transistors are lower gain it's a really magical circuit for hum buckers and the type of style music that joe plays we're going to do a rendition of owner of a lonely heart la la i think that it feels good it's got a nice thing going and a little dash of spring reverb not a lot just a dash i'm using an electro harmonix holy grail um to be honest i couldn't get it to stand up on the amp so i just kind of slapped it into the floor and you know just gonna let it hang there i'm gonna play my gold top les paul with two humbuckers because it really likes this pedal here you go two [Music] next up is the fuzz face mini six it's 120 it is the band of gypsies edition so this is a second hendrix fuzz because why not he had so many different unique styles of the fuzz face uh and this one has a really cool story so from 69 and 70 there's like this mysterious red fuzz face that appears in photography it has white knobs you see this at woodstock film or east stuff like that and it's just been a mystery what is it because when you listen to these recordings it just sounds different i mean it's hendrix so it sounds like hendrix but to certain ears the distinguishing ear you can tell there's something different going on so basically george and the other engineers they kind of hunted down a path here figuring out what in the world is in that enclosure on the stage because it's obviously modified by roger mayer there was a unit in a museum which is essentially the roger mayer octavia but without the octave circuit they recreated it into this tweaked it to the albums by ear and that's what you have here so this is the most different of all these it's in my opinion drastically different but extremely cool for a fuzz face it has all the feeling of a fuzz face it'll do those things that a fuss face does well but it does an incredible distortion it's hard for me to play this and want to play typical things that i play a fuss face for it's almost like a a rat style tone a lot more rock and roll to me and aggressive so i'm gonna play the white strat because that's what hendrix played at woodstock and just i don't know what's gonna happen we're just gonna play something and maybe the room will catch on fire and i'm gonna uh i'm gonna use the unicorn i'm gonna turn it on univibe swirly weirdness [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bye next and last in the ffm fuzzface mini series is the ffm3 you know what now that i'm doing this i'm realizing there was not an ffm5 we went straight to six maybe maybe i'm on to something maybe there's a secret conspiracy by dunlop and eric johnson to release this at the end of time or something i don't know that's pretty extreme but hey anything can happen it's 20 20. uh if you have any information about this you know who to call back to this 120 bucks this is the hendrix signature fuzz now it's obviously one of two signature fuzzes but this is more accurate to the normal hendrix fuzzface that's on most the recordings he favored silicon definitely over germanium for consistency and tonally it's a little bit hotter this is my favorite of the new dunlop fuzzfaces and i did a video the link is in the description below it's how to mod your fuzz face and there's a live follow-up so check that out but let's talk about this here i'm going to play a 335 style guitar by collings and i'm just going to have fun you know just going to have fun because it is my favorite and i think it would be your favorite if you bought it you don't have it you'll never know [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] today's record time is brought to you by skywave killer rock and roll now this i believe is a sort of compilation possibly because it says inside all songs were written and recorded between 95 and 2002 either that's the longest recording process known to man or some type of compilation to vinyl now what's so special about this is first of all it sounds awesome uh but it's oliver of death by audio it's one of his earlier bands he is also in a band called a place to bury strangers which i think i've shared on here before but they're amazing and this is amazing this is kind of like the cure meets uh [Music] it's hard it's like shoe gazing cure alternative instrumental [Music] ambient rock i think you see you listen to it i like it you might not like it but i'm not concerned if you don't like it because eventually you'll like something check it out and in the comments let me know what you think thanks for watching today's episode i hope you enjoyed it in the comments below let me know
