why do we need to redesign our bus Network [Music] hello New York City bus riders I'm Kate Contino director of special projects and strategic initiatives for government and community relations here at the MTA and I'm Dorian Statham director of bus Network redesign as you may have already heard we're in the process of redesigning our bus Network across the five boroughs our goal is faster and more reliable buses for everyone and there are five keys to help us reach that goal number one we want our new network to be easier to use bus routes should be direct and easy to understand from your first look at the map number two connectivity buses are faster when they run in straight lines with as few turns as possible but just running a grid of connecting bus routes would be less convenient for Riders because it would mean more transfers instead we're aiming for a balance of efficiency and convenience to get you to your destinations faster and easier number three bus stop spacing New York city has the shortest distance between bus stops of any major city which is a huge factor in slowing buses down more stops mean longer slower trips our New redesigns Balance bus speeds and walking distance that might mean a longer walk for a bus that is much faster and more reliable number four bus priority with our partners at New York City Department of Transportation we're actively working on creating busways and bus lanes as well as other priority treatments to speed up your ride five frequency improvements we are running more buses on our major corridors right now in Brooklyn for example 75 percent of our customers have access to bus routes that run every 10 minutes or less during the day in Brooklyn's draft plan 85 percent of riders will have access to this more frequent Network the MTA researches and studies data and traffic patterns from each Borough before coming up with the draft plan this draft plan is then reviewed by the communities it affects that means you and your neighbors there are ongoing opportunities to participate in this project during each phase such as open houses workshops Community meetings and through various social media and all MTA input channels to get connected and share a perspective visit our website at new.mta.info slash bus redesign check out your boroughs redesign and come meet us at our events we hope to see you soon and thank you for riding with us
