open job relationship remember this is not will and jada's red table talk tmi too much information in fact too much negative information so let me share some do's and don'ts with you to answering this last job what did you dislike about your last job have you ever quit your job and why so why do interviewers ask this question we want to know do you have performance related issues did you get along with people on your team are you a job hopper hiring is expensive and time consuming as employers we want to make sure if we hire you you aren't going to quit anytime soon here are my seven tips to answering this question tip one be positive don't make any negative remarks about your boss co-workers or the company that's a red flag for us we will assume if things don't go well you will talk the same way about our company the purpose of the interview is to communicate your value and how you meet the requirements tip two don't go into much details don't over share and ramble on and on and get all emotional i had a confrontation with my manager this situation happened two months ago she told me this and i told her that stop this isn't a soup opera i've witnessed this and it can get really awkward you choose what you share you control the narrative and how we see you keep the reason why you are leaving short and to the point tip 3 do not look or feel uncomfortable while answering this question it makes us think you may be hiding something you know this question is a common interview question so be prepared and keep practicing so your answer will come across as natural tip 4 do not lie hear me carefully don't lie on makeup stories but always try to put a positive spin on situations i will show you more in the sample answers tip 5 do your homework read the job description research the company tailor your answer to the opportunity identify something about their company that you really like i like your initiatives about building an inclusive culture and this is what stood out to me tip 6 align your answer with why you are a good fit for the rule bring back the focus to this talk with excitement about why you want this experience touch on the past but focus on the future tip 7 finally don't say things that would make us question your interest in this job my job was not challenging we will wonder if this current rule is challenging enough for you remember we are forming an impression of you make it a good one here are three sample answers i would like to share with you if you were one voluntarily left two were laid off and three fired voluntary left sample answer i have really enjoyed my time at abc company i have worked on and successfully completed several projects from start to finish during the past five years and we actually took the company from x to y during that time i met some amazing people however advancement opportunities was kiss i had a ceiling for growth in my rule when i explored new opportunities with my manager i found that they were limited i have learned a lot but i'm ready for this next step in my career i don't mind a slow down piece but i like to keep learning and growing so this is why when i saw this opportunity in your company i couldn't pass it on i have always wanted to work for your company because of the mission the values the people the great culture not to mention i am passionate about the environment and your company supports this a month ago i read about your recently launched campaign to cut back on plastic pollution i think this is incredible i definitely can see myself working in your organization and contributing to the objectives my skill set and experience make me a perfect fit and i am so excited for this opportunity laid off this can be very difficult but always remember there will be many more opportunities ahead this is what one candidate said well one day i walked into the office the hr manager handed me a letter stating this was my last d and voila this is why i'm here applying for this position no here is a sample answer for the past year the company went through some challenging times because of covert 19 revenues were down my team was heavily impacted despite all our efforts working incredibly hard and putting in extra hours management made the difficult decision to outsource the back-end functions that we currently perform they ended up laying off 90 of the team i made it through the first and second rounds of the layoffs but was included in the third round as my job had become obsolete although this was disappointing i understood the decision and look forward to the future which will hopefully be in your company here you are not dwelling on the past you are positive about the future fired if you were fired i emphasize with you it's not the end of the world take comfort in knowing that many successful individuals were fired in their early careers show you an asset and not a liability show that you can rise above this that is what will impress us sample answer the company hired me for one rule but the rule ended up changing to be something outside of my skill set after some management changes it became clear that a new expectations for my rule didn't line up with my strengths so they brought in someone new who was highly skilled in marketing i accepted the decision and since then i have used this as a learning experience the experience taught me that my real passion is in customer service i knew i would be a major asset to your team as i love interacting with people and going above and beyond to provide excellent customer service this is why i am so interested in this position with your company since it focuses on my strengths i can assure you if you do choose to hire me which i genuinely hope for i will act as a positive role model for your company and work hard to ensure 100 customer satisfaction you don't have to say the word fired we already know from your answer it's important to show that you reflect on your performance actions and immediately put the focus on what you have learned and why you are a good fit for this position noticing all the answers no blaming no finger pointing take accountability and always be positive in conclusion a friend of mine went through four interviews with the company and then was ghosted she feels defeated you may be disappointed but don't be discouraged pick up yourself and keep moving
