hello and welcome to my video series on Bible questions I'm going to be doing a series of questions starting with the Weiss from something as simple as why do we pray before eating meals two questions with additional layers like why did Jesus instruct us to pray leaders not into temptation when God states that he does not tempt us in this video we are going to understand the reason behind the wandering of the ìiî lights in the wilderness for 40 years why did it take 40 years for the easter lights to get to the promised land well if you look at the distance between Mount Horeb where the Israelites received the Ten Commandments and Kadesh Barnea which was the chief site of encampment for the Easter lights during their wandering in the Zen desert it's a journey of 11 days this is not just any information written by travelers or scholars but is mentioned in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy chapter 1 verse 2 it says it takes 11 days to go from her egg to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir Road now you're some information to piqued your curiosity the location of Kadesh Barnea has always been disputed by scholars the most common identification of Kadesh or Kadesh Barnea in modern scholarship is with the present-day tel l Kudarat with most contemporary scholars seeing the biblical references to Kadesh as referring to a single site by the late 19th century as many as 18 sites had been proposed for biblical Kadesh one source of confusion has been the fact that Kadesh is sometimes mentioned in connection with the desert of Paran which we see in the Book of Numbers chapter 13 verse 26 and at other times with the sin desert scene in the Book of Numbers again in chapter 20 verse 1 this discrepancy has been noted by commentators as early as the Middle Ages some sought a reconciliatory model while others proposed to separate sites named Kadesh a minority of recent scholars have continued to maintain a to site theory with a Western Kadesh in the wilderness of zin and an Eastern Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran the latter often associated with Petra Jordan the two side Theory also appears to have been held by Josephus and Eusebius of Caesarea Josephus identifies a Merriam's burial site with Petra according to the Talmud Miriam is considered to be one of the three great leaders of Israel the other two being Aaron and Moses and Bible records her death and burial at Kadesh in the Zin desert and not Petra as per Josephus and if we take a look at the map today then it takes about a hundred and fifty two r's which is close to seven days to go from Kadesh in the desert of per on the one in the east to modern-day Jericho which is Auriga in Syria and the reason why we are going with the Kadesh in the desert of per on from the east is that it appears multiple times in the Word of God it appears in numbers chapter 12 verse 16 where it says after that the people left hazarat and encamped in the desert of Paran and again in numbers chapter 13 verse 3 so at the Lord's command Moses sent them out from the desert of Paran and finally in numbers 13 verse 26 they came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the desert of piranha so all in all it's a journey of a few weeks from Mount Horeb to Kadesh Barnea and then to the land of Canaan so how did a journey of a few weeks turn out to last 40 years 40 years is almost half of our lifetime it's a really long time we go back to the Word of God to understand this goddess tested ten times by the easter lights when the easter lights are trapped between Pharaoh's army behind them and the Red Sea in front of them they cry out to the Lord and complain to Moses saying was it because there were no graves in Egypt that she have led us out into the wilderness to die didn't we tell you when we were in Egypt leave us alone so that we could continue serving the Egyptians it would have been better for us to have died back there than to die here the scene in the book of Exodus chapter 14 verses 10 to 12 test number 2 after the Israelites have been in the wilderness of Shur for three days without finding water they come to Mara there is water in Mara but it is so bitter no one can drink it so the people complained against Moses again scene in the book of Exodus again in chapter 15 verses 22 to 24 test number three on day 15 of the second month after their departure from Egypt the Israelites grow hungry and complain against Moses and Aaron saying oh that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt when we sat by parts of meat and ate bread to the full now you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill us all with hunger there's a scene in Exodus chapter 16 verses 1 to 3 test number four when God starts sending the easter lights manna to eat every morning Moses warns them against trying to save some of their daily portions and eat it the following day despite the warning however some of them tried and learned that the manna breeds worms and starts stinking if left overnight scene in the book of Exodus chapter 16 verses 11 to 20 test number five also concerning the gathering of the manor Moses tells them that they should gather twice as much as usual the morning before each Sabbath morning because God won't send the manna on the Sabbath still even though the Sabbath is to be a day of rest some of the Israelites go out to gather manna on the first Sabbath morning following that command of course they find none seen in the book of Exodus chapter 16 verses 25 to 30 test number 6 when the Israelites come to ref Edom they complain because there is no water to drink they asked Moses why have you brought us out of Egypt was it to kill us our children and a livestock with thirst their complaints are serious enough for Moses to think they are going to stone him scene in the book of Exodus chapter 17 verses 1 to 4 test number 7 when the ether lights are encamped at the base of Mount Sinai Moses goes up into the mountain to be alone with God and receive revelation Moses has gone so long 40 days that the people figure he is never going to return so they with the help of Aaron create a golden calf to serve as their new God they worship it and offer sacrifices unto it seen in the book of Exodus chapter 32 verses 1 to 6 test number eight three days after their departure from Mount Sinai the Israelites complain again the Bible does not tell us precisely what they complain about on this occasion but the complaints are infuriating enough to God to cause him to burn some of the people to death with fire scene in the Book of Numbers chapter 11 verses 1 to 3 test number 9 [Music] shortly after the deaths by fire the Israelites complain again about the food situation this time they are tired of eating the manna and long for the fish cucumbers melons leeks onions and garlic of Egypt seen in the Book of Numbers chapter 11 verses 4 to 34 finally test number 10 when Israel's 12 spies returned from studying the land of Canaan they tell the people that Canaan is a land of giants that devours those who try to inhabit it this causes the people to complain against Moses and Aaron saying if only we had died in Egypt or in the wilderness why has the Lord brought us to this land to fall by the sword and watch our wives and children become victims would it not be better if he all just returned to Egypt then the people start making plans to select a new leader one who will lead them back to Egypt seen in the Book of Numbers chapter 14 verses 1 to 4 [Music] as we read the full accounts of these ten times Israel tested God we see God's increasing frustration and decreasing patience with them and noticed the trend in test number one he parts the Red Sea in test number two he shows Moses a tree when cut and cast into Marys bitter waters makes the waters sweet test number three he begins sending them manna each morning except the weekly Sabbath morning in test number four despite the a blatant attempts to break the rules concerning the manner he keeps sending it and in test number five it is again related to the manner where they are told not to collect manna on the Sabbath but they still go out to collect it test number six he has Moses strike a certain rock with his staff after which water comes gushing out of the rock in test number seven he tells Moses what is going on in the easter light camp and agrees to show the nation mercy they surely did not deserve in test number eight with his patience now wearing thin he kills only a few of the people as a warning rather than killing all of them in test number nine he has a tremendous flock of quail blow into Israel's camp to be killed and eaten for food but even as the people are eating the meat he puts a number of them to death by way of plague and in test number 10 he tells Moses the easter lights will wander in the wilderness for 40 years during which time every Israelite 20 years or older except for Joshua and Caleb will die off systematically so that Easter Isles younger generation can eventually conquer and settle Canaan now let's start to bring it all together in Chapter 13 men are appointed to observe the promised land one each from the 12 tribes of Israel we find this in the Book of Numbers in chapter 13 verses 1 to 2 which says the Lord said to Moses send some men to explore the land of Canaan which I'm giving to the east relights from each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders so they send out 12 spies into the promised land forty days after they depart they return and report on how great the land is in numbers chapter 13 verses 27 and 28 it says they gave Moses this account we went into the land to which you sent us and it does flow with milk and honey here is its fruit but the people who live there are powerful and the cities are fortified and very large we even saw descendants of anak there they further add to this in verses 31 to 33 where it's written but the men who had gone up with him said we can't attack those people they are stronger than we are and they spread among the Israelites a bad report about land they had exploded they said the land we explored devours those living in it all the people we saw there are of great size we saw the Nephilim they're the descendants of anak come from the Nephilim we seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes and we looked the same to them only two out of the 12 spies Joshua and Caleb spoke about conquering the land and the so called shines with the blessings of God but the majority of the spies the other 10 that is put fear in the hearts of the people because of the chines in the land then in chapter 14 the Israelites started rebelling and grumbling against Moses and Aaron and also wished they never came out of Egypt then they said to each other that they should choose another leader and head back to Egypt as for Joshua and Caleb the Assembly of the Israelites talked about stoning them this is where we see God appearing at the tent of the meeting to all the Israelites God tells them because they believe the men's reports instead of what God was telling them they will never see the promised land God goes on to say in verses 26 to 35 the Lord said to Moses and Aaron how long will this wicked community grumble against me I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites so tell them as surely as I live declares the Lord I will do to you the very thing I heard you say in this wilderness your bodies will fall every one of you 20 years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of nun as for your children that you said would be taken as plunder I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected but as for you your bodies will fall in this wilderness your children will be Shepherds here for forty years suffering for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness for forty years one year for each of the forty days you explored the land you will suffer for your sins and know what it's like to have me against you I the LORD have spoken and I will surely do these things to this hole wicked community which has banded together against me they will meet their end in this wilderness here they will die our God is slow to anger and even Moses confirms this in numbers chapter 14 verse 18 where it says the Lord is slow to anger abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished the punishment to the Easter lights of not being able to enter the promised land came after much drama and rebellion from the east relights they constantly tested God and grumbled questioned and rebelled against God's blessings and favor in conclusion God speaks to Moses in numbers chapter 14 verse 22 23 the Lord replied I have forgiven them as you asked nevertheless as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth not one of those who saw my glory and the signs are performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me 10 times not one of them will ever see the land I on oath to their ancestors no one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it and there you have it the Israelites who treated God with contempt would never get to see the Promised Land a journey of a few weeks turned to 40 years because of the wrath of God against the rebellious and ever doubting and complaining Israelites we need to trust in God's promises be patient and have faith having faith in God leads to glorious works and having no faith in God leads to bad actions like we have seen with the Israelites in the Exodus story keep believing have faith and God will truly bless you please hit the like button if you liked the video your continual support will help me make more videos like these if you have not
