I've always imagined having my own club. He wanted to create something very unique for L.A. He was gonna have a nightclub unlike any other nightclub. He likes to see people's reactions to something... ...they've never seen before. My goal was to achieve freedom. Club James is definitely the most unique club in the world. It's different from anything else. Once you see it, it surpasses your expectations. Beyond amazing. Every time my friend's reactions, they have no words. That's the only reaction I got. You're like, "I'm at the right place. Don't wake me up from this dream." It's amazing to think that one man's vision was behind all of this. -James Goldstein. -James. -James. -Jim. Well.... I've met a lot of very wealthy people... ...who don't seem to be happy. They don't seem to be interesting... ...but I think Jim is obviously very authentic to himself. He truly tries to think of... ...what is provocative about something that's of interest to him. I think of him as one of the most iconic people here... ...in terms of his distinct style... ...not only of dress but of living. Jim is Mr. L.A. in my mind. I've been an avid club goer... ...since I was 21 years old. I haven't slowed down my club attendance over all these years. He's a very eccentric person. This closet... ...doesn't have enough space for my clothes. What is very unique about him is that at his age... ...he is able to do what he does. I have a business card that says fashion... ...architecture, basketball. I think it's unbelievable, and I look at him... ...as almost, sometimes, he's like an alien. I see him on the beach next to me... ...I was like, "That's the guy at the Laker games." That's the guy driving around Beverly Hills. He had this cool sort of, you know, mysterious thing about him. I was like, "I wanna know this guy." He's a child of the late '50s, '60s and '70s... ...which is about freedom... ...which was about not being bound by the conventional norms... ...that everybody else is adhering to. My goal was never to be a billionaire. My goal was to achieve freedom. I've made some property investments... ...that have turned out reasonably well. And I've always imagined having my own club... ...which I wanted to be consistent with the John Lautner mentality... ...that created my extraordinary house. To understand the club that James envisioned... ...you have to understand his house... ...which was created by the great architect John Lautner. John Lautner is a main disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright... ...so this house became his baby. This is a special photo for me because... ...the love of my life... ...was this beautiful Afghan... ...named Natasha. And I acquired this house... ...as a result of finding a place for Natasha... ...to run around. James pretty much bought this house for his dog. James bought the house in 1972. JAMES PERRY CONNOR + PERRY ARCHITECTS He rehired John Lautner back on... ...to do what they called "perfecting the house." And really taking the architecture to the nth degree. The glass I had to change to make it frameless... ...so that the outside and inside would be continuous... ...and the view of the city would be uninterrupted. This house is architecturally pretty special... ...and he has put a lot of money and labor and love... ...into what it is as a reflection of him. One of the most unique things about the way he worked with Lautner... ...is how they worked over such a long period. To me, that's something distinct... ...in terms of the relationship between a patron and an architect. As this house got transformed... ...the reputation of the house began to grow... ...and more people wanted to have parties here. Jim's desire to entertain exceeded the capabilities of the house. Essentially, Jim just built a club on his property and it's insane. I have never heard of someone building a nightclub in their house. I've heard of people treating their house as a nightclub. But not this way. The old style of the club matches the house... ...with that view, that design... ...it's just different from anything else I've seen. My inspiration for building Club James... ...came from many years of nightclub attendance. Not only in the United States... ...but in places like Paris, Moscow, London. When I travel around the world... ...I stay out until 5 a.m. every single night. The nightclubs here don't offer me the same excitement. Too many clubs in the U.S. have booths... ...so you're sitting with the people you know. If everybody is up and dancing... ...the energy moves from person to person. If everyone's just laying back and trying to act cool... ...it's not the same. The European clubs really changed... ...how James viewed the whole nightlife experience. He was really attracted to the social side. The dancing and the mingling that comes with the nightclub life. Him walking in, if anybody sees him, they're like: "I know I'm at the right party because Jimmy's here." I think he's always been attracted to what's crazy. This used to be a very special piece for me. I would say I have about 30 hats. I've turned this room into where I watch basketball games. But at his core, I think that Jim... ...is a very respectable, gray matter person. Very well-considered... ...and controlled individual... ...as far as how logical he is... ...and how well thought out he can be. Jim has really always been about the aesthetics of something. Everything is the best it could possibly be. He's not afraid to tear down walls after they've been built... ...in order to pursue perfection. I don't like the word "subtle." That doesn't exist in my vocabulary. Obviously you want the experience of entering the club to be dramatic. There's gonna be a whole entry canopy structure around it... ...that has a completely glass roof. For the south there's gonna be a screening room that will seat 40. We put some housings in here, so it creates a wall of lasers. And there's actually a grid of laser light across the entry here. I always study the design of every bar... ...that I visit. I don't recall ever seeing a concrete bar like this. Nor have I ever seen a concrete club like this. There's a really amazing effect... ...the lights of the club are extending into the grid of the city. And the grid of the city sort of coming into the space. Something modern architecture strives for... ...which is the elimination between interior and exterior. I've always liked this photo... ...and it's become somewhat of an iconic photo. There's a certain presence... ...which I think shows off my look... ...and my personality. Top Funktion-One speakers, top of the line. There's about two miles of wiring conduit in the slab above. Two large panes of glass that are actually operable and slide back. As a basketball fan... ...I decided I wanted to use the same system... ...as the top arenas have used for their scoreboards. It's always been something, I've seen it with Jim. He likes to see people's reactions to something they've never seen... ...and are excited about. I have seen clubs, that when I walked in... ...it was a mind-blowing experience. Not just the club... ...the mix of the people... ...the music, the energy... ...it's all about what the people bring. I never envisioned at the beginning... ...that I would be spending most of my life... ...working on this property. And, in fact, it's still under construction. The phase of construction that's going on below now... ...is for a dining terrace and a lap pool. The lap pool is gonna extend about 90 feet. So it's gonna be extending the whole entertainment concept... ...out into the landscape. Beyond Los Angeles I think this house is one of the best pieces... ...of organic architecture that exist in the world. So much that LACMA is going to take it on. I donated the house and the club... ...and the entire property to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Gifting to LACMA is the right thing to do. If one is passionate about something... ...and this house is his baby, and he would like his baby preserved. What James has done for L.A... ...and giving the property to LACMA... ...it's unbelievable. I hope people from all over the world will see. Jim has made an incredible gesture, not only promising the house... ...but an endowment that means we'll never have to worry... ...about the care on this house... ...and will allow us to do programmatic things... ...that we're excited about. The main idea... ...is that it will continue on... ...the same way that it has been... ...while I've been alive. I think he loves to be around people that are enjoying themselves... ...which is such a wonderful gesture. But it's not about creating a fortress here... ...and walling himself off from the world. He wants to bring the world in and really share this space. I feel very proud of what I've created. I enjoyed sharing this with other people. Houses just bring people together. Jim's house is just the ultimate statement of that.
