in this video I'm going over why businesses still use Windows Server so let's get into that so really I break it down into three things I still use Windows Server 4 on a daily basis the very first is you know Active Directory has like a Rolodex of all your users and devices now there's a whole host of things that can take this place or alternatives however when you've been building users and devices over decades as many businesses have you don't want to transition it's a very painful process and there's a lot of unique information that's stored with them so that's one big reason is one just complacency and also difficult of migration to to do that but I would mark this as kind of a easy one to get away from and if this was the only reason you were still using Windows Server there's several alternatives you could use Linux Active Directory you could use sir don't hit me for saying that deserves actually pretty decent for just authentication and user retention especially if you already have office 365 and you're using like a hosted exchange type solution for your business so very cool stuff but that's one kind of lock ins Windows Server has and why I still see it all the time the second is really the biggest and the reason why Windows Server is not going anywhere and that is GPOs GPIOs or group policy objects are everywhere I can't tell you how hard it is to administer in an environment without GPOs GPOs dictate hey what updates get pushed out how an actual windows box performs what kind of locking down of the actual Windows workstation I want to do from a big level I can push out printers through it I can do all these things all through group policy objects there's other ways of doing that however they're so painful you can do image pushes and those types of things and kind of prune your windows environment to be just a specific one but you got to remember that doesn't lock that in you need GPOs if you're using Windows workstations and you can kind of head into this level of just I kind of hate GPOs because I have had so many nightmare stories where I've come back in over a bad system admin or some business where they didn't take care of Active Directory and I go to load up their GP OS and I noticed there's one maybe two GPOs and then I go to look ahead what they've done with these GPIOs and they've literally edited hundreds and hundreds of rules and set custom things all within one of these GPIOs objects it just drives me crazy you know you have your one rule like deploy printers you only use that GPO to deploy printers if you make a firewall you only change the firewall GPO settings in that firewall rule so many admins don't get that and they end up just making one rule and then just changing the ton of crap in it and then I have to come in back behind and then I'm sitting there reading for days on the edit screen and I'm just like ah make a new rule and then it's just so tedious can't can't get over how crappy GPIOs are and how much I hate them and probably one of the big pushes of why I really want Linux workstations to take over from Windows workstations not pie-in-the-sky it's happening or see attraction this year and maybe in the next 20 years by the time I'm probably 60 Linux workstations gonna overtake Windows mark my words it's gonna happen all because I hate gpo's and then really the final thing that I see all the time is print server so when it comes to print servers in Windows Server so many printers only make these really fancy interfaces for Windows and those fancy interfaces have many options that users needs such as finishing hole punching staple I've also seen you know collation and then you also have some other fancier option like booklets other things that you know these really high-end printers do probably twenty thirty thousand dollar printers in the up so obviously your little dinky Network printer at the house who cares you know that you just throw on a cup server and away you go but when it comes to big business these printers have a lot of options and people need those custom interfaces that are really only made for Windows and that's why I still use Windows servers for printing I mean that's just one of the things now there's many things that over the past 10 years probably Windows has really lost a lot of ground in and why we see the rise of Linux servers and a lot of Linux applications in the enterprise space so the first one that comes to mind is like file sharing everything's moved to pretty much a ZFS type storage you know usually Oracle's makes its own device that has ZFS built into it I think it's based on FreeBSD and it's pretty awesome I want everything stored on ZFS just because of how reliable and I've never lost a single shred of data on a ZFS system that's how much I love it I almost obsess about it if I was ever to go in and be like a consultant for a big business and I looked at their storage and they were using just traditional storage or using NTFS shares and throwing files on those I'd be like no you're not doing this because it is so much better when you have these enterprise level storage systems in place and that's why you know Windows File Sharing has really kind of gone the way of the dodo and why you don't see it too much especially from a bare metal perspective the only time I see it these days is if it's a legacy system they've loaded it up and they want to basically have all their VM stored on that ZFS share and then it's basically inside a VM and it's shared through it but again I don't even recommend that a lot of times I like it just sitting directly on that chair and everything being pushed out from that ZFS nas box but kind of got off on a little bit of a tangent anyways file-sharing and Windows Server again that's kind of I think going away in a lot of instances so I'm happy to see that because don't even get me started about file replication and the nightmare that was about ten years ago back when people actually used Windows Server for file replication nobody does that anymore at least nobody should do that if someone's watching this and you're doing file replication through Windows you know you know the pain of it it's just god-awful but there's also a lot of other things Windows server used to do yeah I remember doing FTP through it I remember using IAS to do websites which no one uses I asked for websites anymore got it I could go on and on but needless to say there was probably 20 different roles Windows servers used to play and now we're only looking at really those three is the big major players and if I forgot any let me know in the comment section below because I'm always curious to see what other system admins doing because everyone does things a little differently and I've seen a lot of things over the years and you know I I there's one thing I have always learned is you're never gonna be completely not surprised when you go into a new environment someone always does something a little differently someone does something a little wacky and sometimes it's genius and sometimes it's just pure stupidity most times do pity but needless to say that's usually why you're there right so that's that's my story of Windows Server why I still see it why I still work on it and a heck right that's my profession that's why I I've had a job for the past 19 years doing Windows Server so I have a ton of certifications on it my first one was in 2003 and that was a small business server and then I moved up to 2008 and got like six or seven different certifications to get an mcitp enterprise administrator but yeah it's like alphabet soup after my name when it comes to that type of stuff but I haven't taken a Microsoft cert in almost ten years now so I don't think I'm gonna re-up it I don't think I'm gonna update it at all because I'm pretty much done with Microsoft servers and I've I've worked on them i still install 2016 is my go-to box right now 2019 much like Windows 10 not a fan of absolutely hate it but 2016 I actually really do enjoy it actually not bad especially coming from 2012 I absolutely hate 2012 because of the Start screen but a whole different video a whole different rant I'm getting off on a tangent here so we're gonna end this video right now but again let me know in the comments section below and as always I'll see you in the next one
