Ever since Zendaya and Tom Holland’s adorable
kissing, everyone is looking back at the “Spider-Man Relationships”, and oh boy, this actually
is a thing. Even though they were one of those couples
that never IN FOUR YEARS confirmed their love, fans were delighted when Emma Stone and Andrew
Garfield turned their on-screen romance into a real-life one. Unfortunately, that’s precisely why our
collective hearts broke when they broke up. Of course, these were just two people like
anyone else who needed to move on, regardless of how adorable they were. But before we get into the break-up details
and break all our hearts once again, let’s go down memory lane with this cute couple
and see how it all started. Love was in the air for Peter Parker and Gwen
Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man, and it seemed to bring about an extra dose of romance for
the actors playing those roles, too. We know sparks flew, but what was the moment
like when they first laid eyes on each other? Andrew admitted he was smitten right away. It happened during Emma’s audition for Gwen
Stacy in the superhero reboot. Garfield had already been cast as Peter Parker,
a dream come true for the young actor. He’s been a massive fan of the comics ever
since he was a kid. “Spider-Man has been such an important symbol
to me... Every skinny boy’s dream,” the actor said. In the auditions for Gwen, Garfield recounted
how he had spent the whole day doing readings with the various actors, but it never clicked. He was about to be done with it when Stone
walked in. Andrew recalled, “It was like I woke up
when she came in... It was like diving into whitewater rapids
and having no desire to hang onto the side. Throughout shooting, it was wild and exciting.” The actors also got on really well, hanging
out in between takes. They would just mess around and have a real
good time together. “Ah, this is different. I wasn’t really aware what was happening. She keeps you on your toes, and that wakes
you up. That was the beginning,” said Garfield. While the attraction between young actors
was immediate, there was a bit of a twist — they were both involved with other people. Isn’t it always the case, though? Stone was dating actor Kieran Culkin. Yep, the notorious bed-wetter from Home Alone
and younger brother of Macaulay Culkin. And Garfield was in a three-year relationship
with actor Shannon Woodward, most recently known for HBO’s Westworld. A month after Emma and Kieran broke up, Andrew
and Shannon followed in their footsteps. That has got to be coincidental. The rumours flew FAST and FURIOUS that the
co-stars started secretly dating, with neither one confirming anything. At the 2011 Comic-Con, promoting the movie,
the two were extremely charismatic and friendly but stayed mum on the romance. Honestly, some of the best moments between
Emma and Andrew were on their press tours together. Toward the end of 2012, it was clear the two
were a couple, generally being THE cutest when they were snapped KISSING and holding
hands. But then, a year later, the two kept a lower
profile because they were busy shooting Amazing Spider-Man 2, which also starred Jamie Foxx
as the villain Electro. Once the film was nearing release, Foxx, Garfield,
and Stone did most of the press together — as Foxx tried a few times to get the two of them
to admit they were in love. For example, when the trio was on The Ellen
Show, the host, also a sly one when it comes to getting her guests to admit dating rumours,
asked if Andrew and Emma’s chemistry was just natural or did they have to “practice
kissing”. Stone just looked at Garfield, who was clearly
uncomfortable, while Foxx was off on the side, patting himself down like they were too hot. “Just looks so natural, whew... I’m not trying to get into nothing, I’m
just saying,” Jamie said with a big smile on his face. Then when DeGeneres wouldn’t drop it, Foxx
interjected, “I say it’s great acting.” Riiiight. Later on, Foxx flat out asked them if their
“personal connection” helped with the acting. “It sure does, thanks for asking,” Emma
patiently responded, patting him on the shoulder. Sticking with the privacy thing, the cute
couple also had a very unique way of interacting with the photographers who would follow them
around the Big Apple. Instead of just putting their heads down and
quickly walking away or stopping and posing for photos (which is really what those people
want a celebrity to do anyway), Garfield and Stone held up signs in front of their faces. Wait, what? The first time they did, it was after having
dinner in the city. They walked out with signs, which read, “We
just found out that there are paparazzi outside the restaurant we were eating in. So why not take this opportunity to bring
attention to organizations that need and deserve it? www.wwo.org, www.gildasclubnyc.org. Have a good day! That’s a great way to handle paparazzi. Stone and Garfield did have many things in
common — charities, a great sense of humour, and a love for animals — including their
beloved dog, Ren. The two fell in love with the 2-year-old female
purebred golden retriever just before Christmas back in 2012. “She was one of the dogs they first saw,
but they weren’t sure,” a source told People. “They left, and they couldn’t stop thinking
about her, so they came back for her. And it’s TRUE LOVE.” The couple were initially going to take the
dog in as a foster pet, but officially adopted her on Christmas Eve. Ahh, ain’t it sweet? We can’t help but wonder, now that they
are not together, who got custody of Ren? Talking about that sense of humour, we cannot
fail but mention the moment Andrew hosted Saturday Night Live, and Emma appeared in
a sketch where the two were struggling to film a romantic kiss. It is equal parts gross and hilarious. We mean, when Coldplay’s Chris Martin stepped
in, whoa, he’s clearly a better fit for Gwen. What do you guys think? We wouldn’t find this out until recently,
thanks to an interview Andrew did, but the actor spent his 29th birthday getting high
at Disneyland with Emma and his friends. “They came out to LA to surprise me; we
went to Disneyland, and we ate pot brownies. It was literally heaven.” Aaahh, wasn’t it? Fans loved the pairing, with the two often
earning the “cutest couple” title in the media. However, Stone was often tightlipped on their
relationship, wanting to protect their bond from the spotlight. “I understand the interest in it completely
because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never
feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.” The sad news broke in April 2015: Andrew Garfield
and Emma Stone called it quits. There were clues of something amiss when he
did not attend the Oscars with Stone, despite her being nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Though, he was filming Scorsese’s Silence
at the time, so we can’t know for sure what has happened and when exactly. Some sources cited they had conflicting schedules
and could not spend as much time together as they wanted, which added stress to the
relationship. Us Weekly claimed Garfield “had been in
a dark place for months before the two eventually split.” Other reports suggested that while Andrew
Garfield wanted to move on to start a family and have kids, yet Stone was not there at
that moment. Whether it was busy schedules, different life
goals, dark emotional periods, or one or more of the above, the couple called it quits and
broke all our hearts. (Cue: sniff sniff) It was a crushing blow
to fans since they seemed to be such a perfect couple, but it must have been an even bigger
blow for Emma and Andrew. Garfield pretty much said as much when he
opened up about how he felt being in the public eye a couple of months later. “I’m just struggling through trying to
make sense of this weirdness we’re all in, the weirdness of being alive. I’m not OK. I am not OK.” More guarded than her ex about what she says
in public, Stone nevertheless also seemed to feel the sting of their break-up. When they were together, Emma hardly ever
gushed about Andrew on camera, but she did admit, “It’s like a dream to work with
him. He’s obviously one of the greatest actors
we have alive today. And he’s also just a remarkable human being. I love him very much.” That comment gained a lot of traction because
it was one of the first times she verbally confirmed the relationship, even if she did
it in a roundabout way. Then they split, and while the actor continued
to share his feelings, Stone still kept it close to the vest. She showed just a bit of her feelings when
she spoke with Vogue in 2016. She and the reporter, who were mostly talking
about Stone’s upcoming performance, which would win the actor her first Oscar, had spent
the day bowling, and in a quiet moment while just sitting, Stone said that she still loved
Garfield “very much.” During the 2017 awards season, Stone and Garfield
started running into each other more and more. She was being handed most of the Best Actress
awards for her performance as the wannabe starlet trying to make it in La La Land, while
Garfield gained some awards traction for his turn as a WWII medic who refused to take lives
in Hacksaw Ridge. At one point, the former couple reunited,
and they couldn’t have looked happier. Then again, at the Golden Globes, Garfield
gave Stone a standing ovation when she won, and a month later, fans shared a screenshot
of the actor getting emotional when she won Best Actress at the Oscars. Garfield was just wowed by Stone and talked
about her a lot during that time. He told Vanity Fair, “I’m constantly inspired
by how she handles and holds herself. It’s been bliss to be able to watch her
success and watch her bloom into the actress that she is. And it’s also been wonderful to have that
kind of support for each other. It’s nothing but a beautiful thing.” This mutual affection seemed to carry on for
months after the awards season. Unfortunately, no real rekindling of their
romance has happened. Stone did go to London once to see Garfield
perform in a 25th-anniversary revival of Angels in America, but that was a friendly visit,
no more. “They never stopped caring about each other,”
a source told People. “Even when they split, Emma and Andrew had
great love and respect for each other.” How do you feel about this adorable ex-couple? Were you as gutted to hear about the break-up
