but first as I mentioned before you heard the news headlines there's been a a helicopter incident in Iran the Iranian president's helicopter has now been found according to Reuters in the last few minutes State Medias reported that Ibrahim ry's helicopter has been found by search and res rescue teams despite very very bad weather and and very thick fogs hasn't been detailed where it was found or if there are any survivors reports earlier this afternoon said that the helicopter one of three in a convoy had something called A Hard Landing um let's without to do get to Sir Richard Dalton the former British ambassador to Iran Sir Richard thank you very much for coming on this evening um we're getting uh updates on this situation as we can and I know you've had this this update too um the iolla the supreme leader has asked the public to pray and also hardland what what what do you read into the the what we know so far I think the idea that the supreme leader would want prayer for the president of Iran is is entirely natural uh I think the uh important fact is coming from one of the leaders of the rescue effort which is that phone calls from two of the people on the helicopter have been received which suggest suggests that although there may have been casualties uh it wasn't a crash resulting in a total loss so there's a range of possibilities from a deliberate Landing to avoid foul weather through to something forced with serious casualties or even fatalities and we just don't know what the position is hard Landing isn't that a euphemism for a crash as far as you're aware um yes and no I'm not an expert but you can guide a helicopter down if it's losing power and the chances are that it won't land delicately like a vdar on the ground but there'll be some form of very serious bump and I know people who have survived serious bumps with awful back injuries as a result from a very hard Landing of a helicopter oh Rice's uh been president since 2021 what can you tell us about him he's a well-respected apparat chick a long-term member of the Judiciary of Iran active at senior in senior positions since at least 1980 uh he was selected by the leadership of Iran as a good sound pair of of hands for the conservative tendency within the Islamic Republic uh and he hasn't disappointed uh although the economic problems of Iran have defied a solution given the degree of uh sanctions pressure from the United States and other countries and given structural issues including corruption uh but he has been in power when the security forces have cracked down on expressions of dissent particularly the women life Freedom Movement and at the moment everything on the security front inside Iran is quiet apart from the risk of attacks from Israel uh we have a fresh update which is the um Iran's red cresant is denying the report quoted by reiters of State media saying that Abraham Rice's Chopper has been found that's now being being denied um what we do know is that fireworks are being lit and set off in Teran uh why would that be is he is he not a popular member of the theocracy no he's not a popular member of the theocracy uh he uh was elected with a a very low pole by historic Iranian standards and translated into a segment of the population uh his vote is a small proportion of the electorate as a whole and that reflects the fact that there is a lot of of sullen resentment of the Islamic Republic a lot of hope that one day things will change for the better and that a uh a regime that would permit liberal values democracy Freedom equality before the law and taking religion out of politics that those essential values might one day Reign inside Iran so I can well imagine young people maybe those who have participated in demonstrations against the regime should be saying to themselves well if this man is dead that's one less yeah but of course that's a vain hope because Iran is a strong Elite has a strong Elite it has officials in depth within and behind every prominent leadership position in the government and although it would be a shock to the ruling system if ibraim RI is dead uh he would be replaced and next year if not before there would be a presidential election uh to put a permanent replacement in place thank you very much indeed Sir Richard dton uh we don't know whether Ibraham ricey is alive or dead but is Sir Richard the former British ambassador to Iran
