Which Island Was Better? Gili Meno or Gili Air? We'll explain how great--but different--both are!

hey guys it's Tim and Kathy with taste life with us and we're coming to you from the beautiful island of giler but but but you got to see that Island over there yes that is Gilly Maya where we spent last week and now we've been here on Gile a for almost a week and we thought it would be fun to compare them because most people only come for a few days or a day trip to Mayo and we thought we'd tell you what it's like to actually to be here for a whole week at both so stay tuned cuz here it [Music] comes hey if you're looking for soft sand incredible beauty water that is just gorgeous to be in yeah just the local atmosphere of an island either one of these Island would fit that ticket yeah we like it better than Bali absolutely we love it so we highly recommend either one for just the sheer natural beauty so let's talk romantic if you want a romantic vacation maybe a honeymoon or an anniversary or your week away from the kids which one should you go to it kind of depends on your travel style to be honest and your romance style uh we loved having a room with a private pool that was very quiet and it was very romantic and we also utilized a really nice resort up the way and uh that was very romantic also using their pool and having cocktails in the the infinity pool overlooking the sunset was incredibly romantic so that was great now we have seen here on ghilly air that was on Gilly Mayo we have seen here on Gilly air that if you're a person who likes it all organized for you and you just show up to the romance they have that here they will set up an archway with flowers and a table and candl IT service and waiters that are dressed in beautiful traditional garb and you know giving you a multi-course meal you can buy it out here so if you want that kind of romance or or the kind of Instagram type romance that has swings in the water and um heart frames you can take pictures in and things like that this island has that what if you're a Solo Traveler not looking for romance okay so let's talk about other people like not romantic Travelers other types of Travelers solo Travelers if you want a very quiet time and maybe you're a digital Nomad you want to get some work done just sleep relax or you just want to be away from everybody Gilly Mayo is your place now if you want to meet people out at NightLight perod Gilly air would be better for you and we've heard if you're just w a party where do you want to go go to ghilly T we didn't even go to ghilly T cuz we're just too old for that but we could hear it from across the channel when we were in Gilly Mana y so now if maybe you're an older traveler or some kind of traveler who has some medical issues I'm going to say giler might be a better choice for you because there is no Medical Care on Gilly Mayo no police there's no emergency services so there's not much here on ghilly air but at least there's something so if you get in a jam at least there's some help all right babe how's the vibe all about the vibe baby well you can tell we're loving this Vibe a lot here this is kind of a uh like a quiet Resort Vibe I would say here on Gilly air when we were on Gilly Mayo I think it depends a lot on where you are I mean obviously it does too anywhere you go but Gilly Mana was a lot more quiet so it was more like a deserted island Vibe uh not quite deserted but it had that very quiet local feel to it un last you went out to like Bas where we did go and you can watch our video on how to live high on a a budget in a gilo but Basque was very elegant and had fantastic food in a very up class Vibe but still very very quiet and uh still maintain that haly Mayo I don't know that it's a quiet vacation a quiet time getaway uh and do you think some of that is because we're on shoulder season part of it I think but I can't imagine that place getting to I don't think they would let it get too wacko yeah I don't think it gets too loud it just gets busier yeah yeah we have been on shoulder season so definitely both of these places are quieter than they are say in June July August the prices are also a lot higher in June July and August the the prices on uh ghilly air are higher than the prices on Gilly Mayo absolutely unless you go to Luxury Resorts then you know then they're all limit on both Islands yeah let's talk a little bit about about the noise so it's really nice not to have the motorized vehicles you don't hear the uh scooters going off and all of that that's really nice both silence disallow motorized vehicles but there's a lot of construction going on here on Gile a um and and I'm not too sure why but there's just a lot and so you can hear that often times in the background there's been places where we didn't stop to eat just because the hammering next door was just too much yeah so Mayo's quieter partly cuz there's there's less people partly cuz there was no construction and and definitely the vehicle situation so babe yesterday you took quite a walk around this island on giler I did and how do you compare the uh the kind of walkability and transportation on the two islands okay so Transportation primarily is done uh two ways on both Islands three ways you got boat you got horse and buggy and you got your two feet and that's about it um you can ride bikes but I'll be honest with you you spend more time pushing the bikes than you do riding because a lot of the roadways especially along the coastline are deep sand and so it's really hard to ride bikes um Gilly Mayo didn't really have a whole lot in the middle of the island so when you walk you're kind of going through jungle andal area until you get to the other side and it's more of a town area still not a lot of paved roads you got to just hit spots that are paved um yeah most of it's kind of sand you're let mostly packed sand more towards the middle I guess but um there are some pav areas patchy concrete areas but not a lot here on Gill uh air there are roads that are real roads I mean they're not wide roads they're not big roads but they are actual asphalt type roads or concrete type roads um so on my walk I only found sand to be really on the coastlines um and even that was pretty packed sand and what's in the middle of the island here uh here it's a lot more infrastructure there's a lot more Town set up a lot more warang which are local restaurants shops uh and there's also more resorts in the center of this town hey let's also talk about the payment system here when we talk about Gilly Mano um you're talking cash rupia yeah even the hotel wanted cash yeah there I'm sure there are hotels that will take credit cards the larger more luxurious hotels we your credit card yes when we went to Basque we paid credit card 3% everywhere 3% in the whole country for credit card use uhhuh um here on Gilly air most places take the credit cards yeah uh again they're still charging you at 3% but it's just easier you don't have to carry around so much cash I think we did need it just for like some drinks that kind of a little yeah thecal the little local warong you're going to need it um if you're going to take the horse and buggy you're going to need it but Mayo is pretty much all local warang and they only take cash at most of them yeah couple will take credit cards but not much to ask before you order to make sure you have the cash and there's no ATM on Gil Mano so you got to come with cash I I read there was no ATM so unless that has changed we never saw one not even near the on this island either although supposedly there is one somewhere on this island so I don't know it could be in the 7our maybe it's in the 7-Eleven maybe there is a 7-Eleven on this island there wasn't one on Gilly May yeah um so I I think you know Transportation wise both are really quiet CU again you're either walking horse and buggy or bicycle um but honestly I just go back to that Vibe really quick I preferred the vibe of Gilly Mayo mhm cuz to me it was more quiet more quiet how's the Ed of mommy Ed of momy is delicious I'm going to eat one while I'm interviewing you oh yeah so how's the snorkeling babe so snor markling no comparison Gil Mayo by far mhm um so we're on the other side we were staying on the other side of Gilly Mano from where we're at um which is the quieter side we saw Turtles I think every day we snarled y saw just a variety of fish every day we saw eels um we saw everything out there that the only thing we didn't really see was any sharks but didn't see any sharks or octopus yeah so we were looking we didn't see any of those um the snorkeling here on giler has not been near as good um the water at times is clearer but those are very few and far in between um it just tends to get a little bit sandier a little bit more mucked up yeah it's very very shallow here and so when the boats go across it really stirs up a lot of sand yeah it really does it is cool that you can see the fish easily easily because they're very close to you but there's not nearly as many absolutely and uh not not the quantity or the variety um so you know recommending snorkeling you want to you want to be a Gil Mano now realize Gil Mano is just a boat trip away you get those snorkel trips from here to there yeah if you just want a day trip yeah but um but those snorkel boats go to the really crowded location absolutely and those areas like over the the sculptures mhm they're just so crowded it's they're just not worth it no in fact we were kind of giggling when we were on Gilly Mayo you want to know where to snorkel look where the boats are and then wait for them to leave yeah exactly that's how you know the good snorkel spots but actually we found on Gilly Mayo that straight out from about um sassic yeah sassic bar was the best SN and that's kind of their um Mayo wall or or drop SL slope I'm sorry the slope um and that's probably the best place to see your variations in fish um usually at least in our case we always found that Turtles were in a little closer than the actual slope so we would come across them long before we got to the slope on kind of the Sandy Bottom yeah cuz they're looking for the seag grass if you're more of a scuba diver which one would be better you know I have no idea I didn't see a lot of scuba places over there if you you'd have to go to a scuba Resort over there to scuba dive there wasn't little SC that's what I was going to say is basically over here there's a lot more dive oriented Resorts yeah and we're staying at a scuba Resort you don't have to dive yeah it's very nice we love blue marlin and's been it looks like a really um reliable safe professional dive school so AB absolutely probably come back if we're going to I would say that most of the places that I've walked by seem very professionally run very well set up they're really on top of their game yeah this west side of the island is very nice we're more in the north northwest side and we get a great Sunset without the party uh boom boom mus the slightly more party e hotels that are a little farther south on this side side it's it's more of a sporty Community up here with the scubas absolutely how do you feel about the shops well I'm not a big shopper so it doesn't bother me that Gilly Maya really doesn't have any they are little shops where you can pick up like some crackers or you know maybe some sunscreen but definitely do your shopping before you go to Gilly Mayo now giler actually has shops with like clothes you would actually want to buy um kind of tourist gifts or souvenirs that you would actually want to buy and they have a little better infrastructure in terms of they have medical care so you know if you needed some little prescription you could probably get it here that kind of thing but it's still very very basic you're better off bringing what you need cuz it's also more expensive here so what did you think of the spas on Gilly Mayo I wouldn't use any of the spas that I saw I'm sure there's Spas at some huge Resorts like bask that would be plenty nice but they're not the deal that spas in Indonesia are uh so I didn't use a spa here there were quite a few Spa that I'd be willing to use if I wanted to walk halfway across the island for them but um I'm kind of holding out till we get back to Bali we have a spa I love there called The Nest sounds good okay Tim so we're sitting in a pretty great restaurant here about to have our Ed Mommy and some sushi and we've got wine and why don't you talk about comparing the food okay so when you get over here to giler the food is more commercialized so what I mean by that is there's just larger restaurants they're more geared towards the Western flavors mhm and mostly attached to hotels yeah and almost all of them are attached to hotels um who which they have a resort feed here of 21% of your bill so be ready for that um when you're over on Gilly Mayo it's a little different than that there's a lot more smaller warong um and there's a few nice restaurants but not as many no probably like half the price though absolutely they they try to do a few Western dishes which are not their best they're better at Indonesian dishes but the food was good yeah food was delicious and they have like three or four tables instead of like this restaurant full of oh yeah tables you know yeah no like I said there's no comparison in the size of the resorts yeah um so you know it's much more geared towards tourists here on Gilly air than it is on Gilly Mano okay so after a week in Gilli a and a week in Gilly Mayo yes what should we do next time what did you like better okay I like the snorkeling I love the snorkeling on Gil mano me too I liked having a private pool me too it was incredibly romantic and very quiet and we really enjoyed it absolutely so I would absolutely go back there for a month day now would you take a day trip or two over here I would come back here for a month stay also you know I it depends on so many factors it depends on the kind of mood we're in if we wanted an escape I'd be more towards Mayo if we wanted just kind of a vacation I would more lean towards Gilly air uh I would also say if we were going cheap I'd go to Mayo yeah unless we're going luxury expensive which we never do but just say we won the lot I'd go to bask on going Mayo otherwise I would come here if I wanted to spend a little bit more but get a little more absolutely so they're both great you can't go wrong whichever one you do at least take a day trip to the other it's a fairly short fairy ride and cheap fairy ride and um
