Which Art Subscription Box is Right For You?

have you seen all the subscription boxes out there but just aren't sure which one could be right for you today i'm gonna look at five popular boxes and break them down hopefully help that decision become a little easier everyone welcome back to the channel we have not met before my name is angela clark this is clark fine art and today we're diving into art subscription boxes i just want to start by saying i am not sponsored by any of these subscription boxes i did purchase all of them myself and i wanted to look at which box was going to be best i didn't know which would be best for me so i did order the variety and i wanted to see what kind of products were going to come in each so without further ado let's get to it and start looking at some of these boxes now i discovered let's make art and start there i discovered let's make art in their box when i got interested in trying watercolor i mostly work in acrylic i had not used watercolors except for maybe when i was a child you know you get those little palettes um the little cake palettes you know and the little paintbrush and anyways i had not used watercolors um definitely not a professional capacity and i wanted to give them a try and i will say that i have been receiving the let's make art box probably for about a year now i would say that this box is great for anyone interested in watercolor because you know that every single month you're going to get something that has to do with watercolor it is specific so in the box i love this spoiler you're good at this what are you gonna get well you're gonna get of course paint and usually it will come with four to five uh different paints usually about four and they will all coincide with the four projects there's a project one project a week for four weeks and you will get all of the this is more than enough paint to do all of these projects and they folks over at let's make our have done a great job every month they always include a let's make art matter and i thought that this was a little something extra that they did that was very special you're gonna get a self-addressed stamped postcard it's the watercolor postcard you will hear information about a specific person that has been nominated and basically the art community the let's make our community gets together and everyone has these postcards and you paint the postcard paint a picture you drop it in the mail it's already stamped it's already addressed super easy you can write a little message and you're sending art to someone and really making a difference in their lives so i love that aspect of this i thought that's a great addition to the box i will admit i have a few to catch up on but again that is such a great project in each box you're going to get your supplies so in addition to paint you'll have your welcome to whichever month usually this is sitting in the top of the box when you open it like that i just happen to when i get them if i don't have a chance to use them right away i take the month out i'll slide it in the sleeve and stick that so that i know this was march and i don't have to save all the boxes so for each project they give you a project postcard they give you wonderful step by step for the tutorial showing you how to do it and then you get a stack of watercolor paper and there's enough for you probably to do each project at least twice and if you wanted to you could cut these down in half and then you'd even be able to do the projects more than twice so i thought that that is a great great idea again they'll give you four different projects this was the current march box i loved this one i want to try that one and they'll also give you on some of them you'll get the line drawings too so you can transfer that right to your paper and it makes it really easy sarah crayover let's make art does a great job with this and then they have this one is another one that i love this one they did such a great job with this month's box so every month you get projects like this and they really break everything down again here with this one you had a there was a line drawing so it really helps you you don't have to be able to draw to paint and they do a great job with their boxes so if you're interested in watercolor watercolor something that you want to try you want to know if i subscribe to a box i'm going to be getting what i am interested in every single month then this could be a great box for you i will say that over let's make art they offer a variety of boxes they have this one which is the watercolor box they also offer an art journaling box and a kids art box the boxes are you just want to try one it's 45 if you subscribe and get it monthly then you'll save about 15 percent and that's going to be about 38.25 cents now you can save even more if you prepay for six or 12 months and then you're only going to be spending about 35 dollars a box so and when your subscriber the entire month tutorials are available at the beginning of the month so you don't have to wait it used to be that you had to wait and every week a new project would release on youtube and you could paint along with sarah and she would break everything down which is wonderful that they do that so in addition to all the stuff that comes in your box you can also see the videos on youtube if you learn better by following along and seeing it done live so that's a another great uh benefit of these boxes but as a subscriber you don't have to wait every week for the new video to come out you get access to them all at once so great job everybody over at let's make art i love this box again i've subscribed to them for probably about the past year and i have not been disappointed and i have the probably the entire collection of colors um now and i definitely those little bottles that they send you more than enough paint to do those projects and then some now i will say that you will need your own brushes and a palette but of course they offer those they sell them there or you just use what you've got so next let's look at this little box that i discovered and this is the scrawlrbox and scrawlrbox comes from the uk it is uh it sells for about 15 pounds or for those of us here in the us that that translates to about 20 and 84 cents u.s now there is shipping on this box if you are outside of the uk within the uk shipping is free has said free delivery in the uk on their website but for those of us who aren't in the uk it's going to cost you about five pounds to ship it which for us folks that's about 6.95 bringing the total of your box up to about 27.79 not a bad price at all for a monthly subscription box um you can also if you visit their website i was able to get a coupon code for two pounds off so that brought my total purchase price down to about 25 us dollars so you can save five pounds when which again translates to about six dollars and ninety-five cents u.s when you purchase a six-month subscription and 15 pounds which is about 20.84 u.s on a 12-month subscription another great thing that i'll say about scrawlrbox i love that they teamed up with trees for the future and every subscription box you purchase plants a tree so they've worked with the folks over at trees for the future and by selling their product excuse me or by us the consumer purchasing their product we are helping to plant trees and replenish the earth so i think that's wonderful especially for those of those artists that you know we use a lot of paper and that can take a lot of trees if you're using cellulose paper and it's great to give back so kudos to them so they also have a monthly art challenge and if you're interested in scrawlrbox you can check out their monthly art challenge goes with and you'll see some of the art that customers are or artists are making with this box so just a quick view this is actually november november box i saw this one and i had to have it so i went ahead and i ordered this this was november 2020 so in this scrawlr box you'll see here a hashtag scroller challenge your scroller box will come with your little card your little menu that shows you what's in your box and for november there was the derwent graphite paint set and a derwent graphite pencil along with the langton 300 gsm watercolor pad so and of course there was a full disclosure there was a piece of candy in here there was there's not any more yes i ate it i ate the candy so here's the uh by daler and rowney the langton this is a 300 gsm watercolor paper i definitely like the feel of this paper i can't wait to give this a try i'm looking forward to that um i do not see it's cold pressed or not if you're over in the uk uh 140 pound 300 gsm i do not see if it says 100 cotton so i'm going to because i don't see it specifically written i'm going to assume probably shouldn't do that but i'm gonna assume that this is a cellulose or like a wood pulp type paper in the box there is a card with some artwork and the scrollers line magazine november 2020 and basically this breaks down uh derwent has provided a discount code here which is great i will certainly love derwent products be taking advantage of that so it talks about you get your graffiti of course it came with a handy little sticker which i'm not seeing mine at the moment but i know it was in here i really liked it it looks like it was made with the graffitint so i thought that was really cool looked like that one right there so you have yours it tells you you have your supplies menu you're gonna have you know all the different items that are that are in your box and then it's going to talk about this here's scroller artists tips things to try some of the sprawler gallery so all in all i thought this was a great box for the cost even with that extra shipping from the uk to the us i would certainly consider getting another one there's my sticker i would certainly consider getting another one of these so a little sticker graphite pencil and of course the derwent graphite paint set so i can't wait to do a project with these and share that with you from what i've seen the sprawler boxes they're all a lot of them come with uh either markers or pens or that was the graffitin i saw one that was gouache so it looks like there's a good variety that they try to do a variety and give you something different to use each month so that you can test out and try different mediums so for the price um this was definitely even with the shipping from the uk it was my smallest packaged box it also had the fewest items but it came with the lowest cost overall so would i try another scrawlrbox absolutely next let's look at the paletteful packs i found palette full packs and they always put their labels on top which i wish they would put them on the bottom so when we do our unboxing our address and stuff isn't there but a little washi tape fix that no problem so palette full packs i had discovered this actually on a youtube video that was suggested to me and i thought i've never heard of that before i definitely am going to need to give that a try so i went ahead and i ordered them i went with the pallet full packs premier box this is the premier box it is 35.95 a month that was to my door no whether or not that included shipping i don't recall if it was a lower price and then there was shipping but total cost out the door 35.95 that's not a whole lot more than you know the scrawlrbox came in at 27.79 and so for just eight dollars more i've got the paletteful packs box and they also have a petite box now the petite box is going to be 24.95 and then they have a young artist palette full pack and that is 31.95 now i will say that you can get this one of the features that i thought was different with this company you can order these monthly or you can choose to order these quarterly so i can get one a month or i can get one a quarter so i thought that was great maybe you don't have time to do all the projects and you don't want a bunch of boxes stacking up and you only want to get one a quarter that's fantastic you can still subscribe and get that you will get more savings of course by pre-paying for three six or 12 month subscriptions they also have a hashtag palettefull packs and you can see what people are creating with their subscription boxes and you sponsored by palette full packs i would love to be i'm not i'm not sponsored by any of these companies i did pay for all of these boxes out of my own pocket because i was curious and i didn't know which was going to be the best so let's look at palette full packs and apparently i haven't even opened this palette full packs i thought i pre opened all of them to show you this one just came in so let's look at what comes in a pellet full packs box so first off uh we have all of this shred that's on top which i guess i could do without it happened although i will just probably throw this in something and i will reuse it and it'll go back into uh packaging whether i ship something or give a gift or something like that i will repurpose this i will reuse it it is paper um it's not a plastic so i think i like that better than than using a bunch of plastic so let's look at what's in this box we have an opaque white by copics oh this looks like it's going to be similar to i'm not sure i've never used this product but looks like it's going to be similar to like my dr martin's uh blue proof white looks like it'd be similar type product to that so i'm not sure if you know drop me a comment below i've not used this before do you use it what how do you use it do you use it over things like colored pencil do you use it specifically with the copic markers let me know i'm gonna be looking forward to giving that a try as well i will be making videos trying out these boxes so you will see get to see these again um i'm gonna do one specifically for each box that is my plan if i've paid for them i'm going to definitely use them on my channel so here we have a paintbrush this is a robert simmons this is the sapphire number three nice oh i can't wait to give that a go of course you have just like all of me have your little menu what's in the box so it says we have posca paint markers a posca pastel pencil copic opaque white pigment so this all right it says this water-based pigment is used for highlight effects the opaque white won't bleed into the base color giving sharp line definitions and it can be used on permanent ink surfaces as well as with acrylic watercolor and colored pencils manufactured suggested retail price is fourteen dollars for that product so yes i can use that like my dr martin's dr ph martin's bleed proof white uh it also sounds similar to brush and pencils brush and pencil has a product that i can use over colored pencil as well uh is it archival over colored pencil i don't know again i haven't researched this it's all brand new to me which is what i love about these boxes i'm getting stuff i've never tried before of course we have a sticker we have the posca sticker we have one two okay so these are thinner these are thicker some pasta pens i am assuming that these are going to be my pastel pencils so my paint markers my pastel pencils we saw the white pigment we saw the brush and then we have crescent ultra black textured board and that is a three pack so that's going to be here i've gotten some other crescent boards and i like them so i am really truly the blackest blackboard on the market oh that's exciting i'm i'm looking forward to using this i have uh i of course try it out with one of these products so the products that came in this box i'll do a video on that but i'm really looking forward to trying these out with some of my different colored pencils too and see how that works i have yet to be disappointed with the crescent board so we will see so there you go that is everything that came in the march 2020 palette full pack uh the premiere palette full pack box i gotta tell you 35 95 i'm excited about this box and uh it's definitely one i have subscribed to i wanted i want to get a couple before i jump in and pre-pay for for three or six or 12 months because i want to try them out i want to see what kind of varieties are coming but i'm not disappointed in that box i've never used the pasta pens before uh the pasta markers who knows i'm not sure how i'm going to use them but i'm certainly going to give them a go and i'm excited about the new products i can try out so there's palette full packs next let's look at art snacks now art snacks is another box that i happen to i was of course once you watch one or two unboxings youtube thinks you love unboxings and that is all your feed is filled with for days and days until you stop watching them so yeah i didn't stop watching them and i saw this wonderful art snacks unboxing and i said oh no i have to try that too so here we go i've gotten a couple art snacks boxes and we are going to excuse me we are going to look at them now the art snacks are one of the more expensive boxes i will say that when you look on the website it says that the art snacks plus box which is this box is 39 and then they have the and that comes with five to six full size supplies and that the art snacks uh they have a smaller box and that box is twenty four dollars a month and that comes with about four to five supplies so it'll be four to five of the supplies that are in this box and then when you get the the plus you'll get the the additional supplies it'll come with a full-size surface to work on whereas the smaller box does not come with a surface so there are some of the differences now this does have an additional shipping cost so i will say for full disclosure 39 i thought that's a great price okay we just looked at powerful packs at 35 and uh 95 cents so i thought well 39 that's only a few dollars more right at checkout there is going to be an additional shipping charge and that's going to bring your total to 48.99 however am i disappointed no because i will say that of the art snack the plus boxes that i have looked at i love them i love them and so let's get into this one now one of the things about art snacks that i will say is that you can get limited edition and first look products in some of their boxes and some of the items you get before they're even available to purchase in a store and some items are art snack exclusives so they're working with quite a few companies very reputable companies and some of the products they only make them for art snacks so the only way you're getting your hands on it is through one of these boxes so i thought that was pretty exciting and i am looking forward to what you get so let's check out an art snacks box so again this is the art snacks plus the art snacks box is smaller will come in a smaller box about this big and you're only going to get some of the products that you see in this box now this is the march 2021 box so you get your art snacks uh plus menu and it says we're gonna have a let's see we get the oh so for arts here's what's on the art snacks plus menu so in addition to the regular art snacks box so you have two menus there we go so if you got the art snacks box the one that's 24 a month you're going to get a plum chester paint marker you're going to get the chameleon color tones colored pencil you're going to get the cub 3 pencil sharpener you're going to get the karasaki zig ai liner brush pen and now oh and it says our birthday present to you art snacks x-wing excuse me art snacks x black wing pencil so art snacks turns eight years old this month happy birthday to art snacks it's been a super exciting year and we're celebrating with a birthday gift to you so a custom art snacks blackwing pencil so we're gonna have one of those exclusive products in this box i am excited i love the blackwing pencils and that's exciting so march 2021 that's what you'd get in the regular art snacks box in the our snacks plus box you are also going to get a marabou graphics permanent marker which is uh there's the graphics marabou graphics permanent markers a set of 12 and you're going to get the fabriano 1264 mixed media spiral bound paper pad 7x10 and this is a brand new product if you have not seen this yet this is by fabriano it says since 1264 fabriano has been synonymous with high quality paper loved by the great masters such as da vinci and michelangelo fabriano paper is made in italy and offers a surface for every type of application this month we've included their 1264 mixed media spiral bound paper pad in your plus box filled with 60 sheets of 160 gsm medium textured paper this pad is suitable for both dry and wet techniques if that didn't feel like commercial i don't know what did but i'm telling you this is a brand new product so again that's what i was just saying you're going to get brand new products in your box sometimes before you can even buy them at the store so i'm excited this fabriano paper so this it feels very smooth it almost feels slightly more textured on the back side than it does the front side so yeah it almost feels a little bit more textured on the back than it does the front so i'm guessing you could use either side i can't wait to check that out so there's my full size surface in my fabriano 1264. i get my marabou graphics permanent markers a set of 12. here is the this is going to be the coomb cub 3 pencil sharpener i'm excited about this because not only does it do the two different size pencils i also have this is my father was an engineer and this is a drafting pencil that he's used all the time and i can advance the lead in that i could actually put this in here and sharpen the lead in this pencil sharpener because it has that spot where i can just slide that lead out place it in there and get a very oh yeah i can get a nice sharp point on that i love it i love it now i've i have uh this fancy little contraption that my dad also gave me that you would actually take this pencil stick it in here spin it around and that would create the point on your pencil or i can just use my little sharpener i love this i think i'm going to use this a lot because i can use all different size pencils in that and i love the pencil sharpeners so of course you have your snack because it's art snacks you're gonna have a snack and then there's the other items and here we go yup so see here actually has the art snacks logo right there this is an art snacks exclusive product this is a black wing pencil i love these pencils these erasers you can actually pull out you can advance the eraser up put it back in i love these pencils i'm excited i can't wait i can't wait to use that yes i'm excited about one little pencil and then of course with most subscription boxes that seems to be a theme right we get a sticker and a candy with our art supplies i don't know why we need candy with our art supplies but hey we get it and stickers i don't know what i'm gonna do with them all but maybe throw them in a big box and one day just give them to a child who loves stickers so there's the plum chester pen we have the chameleon dual sided uh pencil there's our kuretake and of course the black wing i really i am excited about this box um again all the boxes that i am sharing with you i will be doing videos on those i love that it comes in this little pouch i'm sure that i will find uses for these um seems that everyone comes with one of these little zipper pouches to protect them i do like that especially when there's pencils in there so they come in you know the tips aren't broken i've ordered pencils from dick blick and even though i special request please do not send my pencils just in a padded envelope like this through the mail put them in a box it never fails they come in an padded envelope and the tips get broken and that's frustrating because then you have to re-sharpen them and it just wastes some of your pencil so yeah not a fan i wish they would just send all the pencils unsharpened so that our tips couldn't get broken and we can sharpen them ourselves the way that we would like to use them that's a rant for another day so this is the art snacks box again they have the hashtag art snacks challenge and you can search that hashtag and see some of the wonderful artwork that is being created with products from their boxes i absolutely love this box i have yet to be disappointed it is one of the more expensive boxes when you consider also including shipping however i've yet to be disappointed with one i am very excited for them to arrive i love the products they are all reputable products they are all seem to be products from well-known companies um and i like that i feel like i'm get definitely getting the value for the money that i'm spending with this box so that is art snacks now the last box i have is smart r smart art box so the smart art box excuse me this definitely comes in at the top of the range it is uh they they advertise that they there's you will not pay tax or shipping but you will pay 49 and 95 cents to get this box to your door so that is every month now again like some of the others you can get it cheaper if you decide to subscribe and get paid prepay for three months or six months at three months you'll pay 47.65 per box and at six months you will pay 44.99 per box if you go to their website i can put a link in that below it is not an affiliate link for smart art they do not offer that i don't have one if they offer that i don't have one yet so you can get five dollars off your first box however if you go to smart art and enter your email address now one thing i will say about smart art box is that they do a monthly art contest is what they call it and you you create your art with products from your smart art box you they provide prompts for the month and you will tag them with at smart art box and use the hashtag smartartproject and hashtag smartartweekly and you can get peacock points so they give you peacock points you earn peacock points when you make purchases like your monthly subscription box and you can also earn peacock points by participating in their monthly art contest those peacock points you can then use to get discounts on things that you purchase from smart art now if you are at all familiar with this box or if you are at all familiar with jazza you know that jazza has a box that he has done with the smart art company and that looks amazing so i have not tried that they are quite expensive i would love to check one out but at this time we are just sticking with our smart art box every month comes in box just like this and this is the march 2021 box of course we have our snack we have our smart art pamphlet so this little book i do like how they do their book i will say um they give you a history of the product and we're looking at impasto painting this month and so it looks like we have a set of oil paints in there now i don't know how i feel about this because i don't normally paint in oil paints but again it's one of the reasons i get the subscription box this is a medium i do not have in my studio in abundance in fact the only oil paints i have are oil paints that are probably 20 to 30 years old that were given to me by my father from when he painted and yeah i tried them once and i wasn't a fan and i probably wasn't a fan because i didn't know how to use them so i am excited about this box because i know it's going to tell me how to use the product um it's going to come with the talents art creation oil color paint there's a 24 set now they say that retails for 22.95 you're gonna get a five piece assorted painting knife set retail is about 7.99 and i like that they include the retail values in here you get your ashley natural bristle brushes in a round four and a fan six now the retail value of these brushes is 13.50 they say they are six dollars and 75 cents each i have not tried them um i do like the feel of this brush here this hog they definitely feel like hog um yep pure interlocking white chinese hog bristles holds its shape extremely well each brush has a seamless aluminum ferrule fitted into a lacquered dark blue handle this actually looks green to me so i would say green handle but who knows could be a blue teal whatever um i like the feel of this brush i can't wait to give that a try and this one as well that is a round number four round number four number out and then it also says that we're gonna get some crescent again the crescent boards uh the crescent canvas boards five by seven three pack and you get two packs included oh that's fantastic so that's gonna be that's gonna be six five by seven boards so a lot you can create quite a few projects with this so again yeah it's at the higher end of that price point on subscription boxes but i gotta say if i add all these things up you know i'm definitely getting my money back out of it you know when you add up all those retail values and look at this so they are going to actually show you a project and they will break it down for you step by step how to do that that looks like i just did a painting yesterday with poppies i posted that on the youtube channel um no i haven't posted it on the youtube channel yet i posted it on instagram and facebook video coming so that's fantastic and then we're talking about the impasto so look at like you know you're putting the paint on nice and thick and that is very interesting so i can't wait to give that a try and again this month's smart art weekly prompts so this is what i was telling you bloom reflection vase sunshine those are your prompts you would do one piece of art a week with based off of those prompts and you're going to share that on social media with and tag at smart art box and hashtag smart art box our smart art project and hashtag smartartweekly and you can earn peacock points to get more free products from smart art so how exciting is that so there we go palette knife and there is a 24 set of oil uh paint that glare off of there so yeah i'm looking forward to that we will we won't have to do a video on that and experiment together because oil painting is not my thing i have not done it i know i've seen oil painting over acrylic and it interests me but i've never done it so yeah i'm looking forward to getting some more supplies in to try to work with that and we'll have to give this one a go so there there's the let's make art with the watercolor box specific to watercolor every single month you know exactly what you're getting if you're interested in watercolor that's all you want to do is watercolor you don't want to branch out try new things experiment with new stuff you just want to get better at watercolor and want some tutorials and the supplies to do those tutorials this is a fantastic box sarah cray over at let's make art has done an amazing job i highly recommend this highly recommend this i am not affiliated with let's make art i get nothing for telling you that it is just my opinion i hope you'll try them out and let me know and i will say that they you're gonna get the liquid watercolors these are liquid watercolors not cake so they work a little different they are more of a ink or dye based watercolor not archival i'm sure however that said uh if you're creating art and you want to do it professionally you can always create your art and make prints from it you can sell as many prints as you want to and just save your originals for yourself palette full packs i like for the price and what is in the box powerful packs one of my favorites i think out of these that we've looked at today although i have to say that art snacks yes it's not our most expensive but the items that came in here and the value that i felt i was getting for the price i definitely love the art it's a toss up i'm right i'm right here i'm right here um this one is a little less per month you get similar quantities but there's just that little bit more in the art snacks plus box scroller box you want to get your feet wet with a subscription box scroller box is definitely again it's the smaller of the subscription boxes it's the least expensive even considering shipping from the uk it was the least expensive of the boxes i was not disappointed so did that help you make a choice i don't know i still can't choose obviously i'm getting all of these boxes i can't choose i will say that i have been getting the smart art box the longest and if you're looking for an art subscription box that is going to give you a very large variety of mediums to try and test out smart art box does that now i am going to do a video that will be just smart art and we will look at um six months worth of smart art boxes and you will see over the course of six months what has come in my smart art boxes and maybe that will help you narrow down if you're considering this box because for me personally while i love exploring new mediums i prefer to explore new products in mediums i enjoy smart art gives me a lot of variety but not necessarily a lot in the mediums that i specifically enjoy and i think we'll dive into that more when we look at the six months worth of smart art boxes so am i going to keep getting smart art box i'm on the fence stay tuned for my smart art box video and we will find out because i'm certainly going to be making that decision soon because let's face it that's a lot of monthly subscriptions going on right here and some have to go who's going to make the cut i'm not sure yet but i will definitely update you so far in the running palette full packs and and the art snacks plus box probably are my two favorites the only reason i'm not saying that the watercolor box from let's make art is one of my favorites is because one i've been subscribed to this box for probably about a year and i have every watercolor available from them so am i going to continue with let's make art i'm not sure oh i will absolutely support um let's make art and watch their videos and all of that because they are fantastic i love the way that they do things um but this is one that's on the list of potential it may not continue coming and that is not because i'm disappointed or do not like the box it is simply because at this time and i may just suspend my subscription for a while i have every color available which means i can wait and see the videos as they come out weekly and paint along and do not need to pay to keep getting supplies that i already have so that would be the only reason i would suspend my subscription for now however you get some great surprises in some of these boxes that are beyond what you normally got i've received palettes um i have received extra paints i received my um chinese white my blue proof chinese white just this last month i got an extra thing of it here so yeah oh that's another thing that came with march see i didn't i forgot to put that back in there you got this which was more of the bleed proof
