it's time to celebrate the birthday of the Pope's favorite game undertale by playing the one and only chapter of Delta run and surely nothing unexpected will happen open that [ __ ] up [ __ ] get [ __ ] [Applause] yeah holy macaroni dropped out of nowhere right after the sixth anniversary of undertale it's chapter 2 of Delta run a possible prequel or sequel but definite spiritual successor to Toby Fox's smash Indie hit ah undertale there's a game I certainly loved and might have made a video or two about back in the day but Toby likes Delta run to have its own identity so let's approach it as such and see where this whole thing's going shall we Delta Run's sneaky first chapter it was a survey program right came out in 2018 introducing us to this new story spinning off in its own direction from undertale while repurposing many of the characters having a large degree of gameplay overlap and with the same endearing writing style and characterization that's always light-hearted and fun until it's not so far the story of delun involves two worlds one of light and one of Darkness with our characters traveling between them and the potentially cataclysmic r ramifications of the sudden expansion of the Dark World as our characters learn about mercy and the true meaning of friendship along the way there's a particular appeal to Toby's simplistic seeming game development style and whether it's caused by the limitations of being almost a one-man show or an intentional outcome these games have a way of trimming the fat of technical complexity other developers rely on to make their game stand out to focus on his priorities and vision being a true example of when less is more in these games the attention of the player is natural drawn to the strongest aspects of their design things like the writing comedy and characters which can be a risky move if those elements don't stand up to the added Focus but Toby's atmosphere and World building always come across as so consistently wellth thought out and endearing that they more than pass this test and are a major reason why these games are so beloved with witty self-aware writing that above all prioritizes being fun you might even say they reap the benefit of aiming lower on the mckel curve but of course no one knows what that means the sheer preponderance of Soul concentrated in these games that's achieved by not overburdening the projects leaves them free to take steps beyond what other games do and push the envelope of interactive storytelling they're short fun and immersive what more is there to say than they're good and you should play them and with that overview out of the way now we'll be diving into the lore and what's to come for Delta Ron there will be a great deal of speculation involving serious spoilers so if you haven't explored chapters 1 and two to your satisfaction Now's the Time to go do so so cuz trust me it's worth doing raw but do as thou Wilt and here we go the story follows our main cast as they travel to Dark World seemingly formed from inanimate objects from their light World brought to life a mysterious individual known as The Roaring Knight is creating new dark fountains to connect to new Dark Worlds and is either unaware of the potential consequences of doing so or is intentionally attempting to bring them about maybe with the help of outside forces as well that would unleash Titans and cover Both Worlds in darkness and chaos as to who some of these mysterious actors might be we do have a few pieces of information for starters the secret bosses of both chapters jevil and Spanton have very interesting and similar backstories themed around the idea of freedom long before our Story begins both of them were normal residents of their worlds jevil a court jester and Spanton a humble spam salesman until some unknown party contacted them and they began to change now perceiving their world as a prison or a game and generally acting insane and D dangerous seemingly driven mad by Forbidden Knowledge the pattern here is rather depressing as it seems like any darkener who gains too much awareness of their world will go mad with the knowledge that they are forever trapped there lacking the soul lighteners possessed that allows them to live on the higher plane of the light world it's pretty much some Lovecraft bloodborne [ __ ] and they just gained too much Insight ah help me I'm mdala I'm going insane if you help Spanton take possession of the lightener created Neo body he'll try to use that to ass send and when it doesn't prove sufficient he'll also try to steal your soul leading to his secret boss fight which by the way finally gives us the metaton Neo fight we got jipped out of an undertale but hey better late than ever it is the best fight in the game so far so knowing how all that happened who is the mysterious figure who guided jevil and Spanton to their unfortunate Fates Spanton spouts a lot of nonsense but on a few occasions mentions someone named Mike who he appears to call out to in anger or desperation which might be a reference to Mike Ditka in an ad for Big Shot soda from 1997 I got your big shot right here it's probably just a meme but what is notable is that there are a few subtle references between Spanton and jevel that hint that the hand at work here might belong to the most enigmatic character from undertale the former Royal scientist WD gaster his very existence is a rabbit hole even the very image everyone uses for him might not even be the man who speaks in hands so we'll just touch on the basics and be sure to take your normal pills cuz we're going to get a little skitso the most compelling evidence of a connection to gaster is through spam Ton's phone calls we hear more about his past from his old Addison buddies where one of them claims to have picked up a phone receiver left by spam to midc conversation and on the other end heard only garbage noise this is the same phrase used to describe the audio we hear from our cell phone when trying to make a call in the Dark World garbage noise [Music] [Applause] and interestingly the sound effect that plays when you do is the same one heard in a secret room in undertale inaccessible in normal play believed to depict the secret 17th lab entry written by [Music] gaster mere coincidence I think not I know I know I'm Downing my normal pills as fast as I can but this is the nature of things with gaster hidden in secret rooms and game files but who definitely did once exist in undertale until he was shattered across time and space so is it really so hard to imagine that he or an alternate universe version of him could be having some influence on Delta Rune but even if we assume that this and the other scraps of evidence do point to gaster as the one behind jevil and spon's Transformations it still doesn't answer the question of why he would do this and what he has to gain since nothing good seems to have come from it one theory is that gaster's splintered tormented existence has led to him lashing out to undermine or destroy any world he's able to connect with however there is one important thing we do know about gaster's character that he was the royal scientist and was passionate in his pursuit of higher knowledge before he vanished whatever he is now perhaps gaster is reaching out from whatever plane he exists on in an attempt to continue to explore and understand his reality including worlds like the one he came from sharing his knowledge of higher planes intentionally or otherwise with whoever he encounters but in doing so maybe he's having an effect like an eldrich horror reaching out from Beyond and the higher level knowledge he shares acts like a disease driving whoever hears it mad as the truth of their existence is too much for a darkener to handle and even if these connections to gaster aren't all their cracked up to be there is one other individual who could be responsible as the only other enigmatic actor we know of to be actively interfering in world affairs the apparent main antagonist of Delta run we've been following in the footsteps of the Knight the Knight is the one opening up new dark fountains accessing new Dark Worlds and even getting involved in their Internal Affairs as they were the one to give the King of Spades the power to depose the other kings and become supreme ruler of his world in Chapter 2 Queen tells us that any lightener has the power to use their soul to create new dark fountains and worlds meaning theoretically any Lightner could be the Knight and R informs us that opening too many dark fountains will lead to an apocalypse but that information doesn't seem particularly widespread so it's unclear if the Knight is necessarily aware of it which leaves us with two questions who is the Knight and what is their goal it's possible that the Knight is the same being who corrupted jevil and Spanton however the two seem to act in very different ways and on different time frames the Knight seems to have had much more of a direct influence recently like helping king take over and creating the cyber world Fountain the same day we visit it while the other seems to have come and gone long ago operating in a more indirect way influencing the minds of certain characters for no clear goal so the idea of someone like gaster being the Knight seems unlikely as Noel and Bley proved in Chapter 2 our main party aren't the only lighteners that can access the Dark World which is a fun and exciting place for them giving a real temptation to keep opening more fountains to continue the adventure so it's possible whoever is doing this maybe even multiple people are simply playing around unaware it could Doom the world it's less clear why a random lightener would want to do something like install King as ruler but if you think of it as them doing whatever they feel like in this world treating the whole thing like a game which it is it could make sense it wouldn't be the first time the series has made points using that idea there are some theories that the Knight could be someone like Des Noel's long-lost sister who might have been lost in the Dark World felt abandoned when no one came to find them and twisted that pain into a desire to destroy the world there's no solid evidence to back this Theory up but the possibility does exist that she or some disgruntled character might have some resentment against the world and want to lash out at it and speaking of disgruntled characters the main Contender for the identity of the Knight is of course Chris the biggest piece of evidence we have is seen at the very end of chapter 2 when Chris is shown opening up a new dark Fountain something Chris does having just heard the prophecy of Doom from Ral and should know is a bad idea so far Chris is the only character confirmed to have opened one which is exactly what the Knight would be doing not to mention the images of the Knight we've seen generally depict someone wielding a knife to do so frankly connections like that seem to so clearly point to Chris as the Knight that they initially feel like a red herring but the fact is that Chris is still by far the most likely candidate but Chris is our player Avatar right meaning for me he comes across as a red-blooded American man and quite a looker to boot what our player Avatar actually be the apparent villain of the game why would that be and how would it even work with the real underlying question being who exactly is Chris to answer that it would behoove us to consider the themes of Delta run in particular the ideas of choice control and who is in it because of course if you've beaten these chapters you've seen the scenes like at the end of chap CH one where Chris seemingly rips the soul from their chest and locks it in a cage operating independently while we the player retain control only of that heart within the cage we see more of this in Chapter 2 with Chris trapping the soul also known as you locking us away while they sneak off to do some spooky Shenanigans then again when they open the fountain and the implication is clear you the player and Chris the character are two separate entities Delta run opens with a spooky segment where you create a vessel that is immediately discarded with us being told that no one can choose who they are in this world and while this could specifically refer to the fact that we won't be controlling that vessel but the character Chris the implication seemed far larger that the decisions you make won't make a difference in the end an idea supported by Toby's confirmation that the game will unlike undertale only have one ending this was further reinforced with the overall Arc of chapter 1 where no matter what you did things ended up basically the same way but in Chapter 2 there are already major ways the outcome has begun to diverge depending on how you play with the option to recruit new residents to your town or scare them off collect important seeming items like the shadow crystals and Thorn ring and most importantly decide the fates of birdley and Noel sure if everything goes perfectly everything ends up just fine with them but if they don't Birley can end up losing an arm in battle which appears to carry over into the light world and on the weird or snow grave route is where things change dramatically with the whole premise essentially being Chris as party leader mind breaking Noel into becoming a coldblooded killing machine in chapter 1 of Delta run unlike an undertale attacking enemies never killed them just scared them away but in Chapter 2 Noel joins the team with a spell that actually can kill by freezing enemies to death before they can escape leading to a very dark Twisted story path though now widely known the route comes across like a secret option players are meant to discover through experimentation and while definitely uncomfortable is another one of these paths players have access to with a shocking amount of effort put into making the world respond accordingly to the player choices and is most certainly a memorable experience things go completely past the Tipping Point when you order Noel to kill an innocent shopkeeper to get his ring which frankly made me physically ill in real life but like a true gamer I did it anyway I'm not going to half ask something no matter what the game says I'll throw away my ballish [ __ ] I don't give a damn things between Chris and Noel get downright s Mass ktic which feels deliberately juxtaposed with her more innocent seeming attraction to suie although that attraction also seems based on su's overbearing bully Persona so maybe Noel isn't the best at forming healthy relationships to begin with anyway the killing continues until you have only one target left to use Noel's ultimate lethal snow grave spell on my boy the high IQ gamer supreme birdley but he can't wave Dash or shine his way out of this one and you kill him too afterward when you all return to the light world birdley is completely unresponsive all signs pointing to dead and Noel despite thinking it was all a dream has clearly been affected aware that something is wrong and Chris seems dangerous now like the ominous ending of chapter 1 only confirmed to have led to the death of an innocent pie it is possible that birley's debilitation and or death are fake outs and we'll all get a good laugh in chapter 3 when he shows up saying his arm really was just numb or that he was in such a deep sleep last night that he just looked dead but at this point things have escalated beyond that being an acceptable way to handle the story many of us suspected from the start that this idea of no choice in chapter 1 had to be a mask for some larger idea and was kind of an intentional misdirect because in actuality the choices you had in undertale were Bar None the single most important and interesting aspect of the game and to Simply strip them away while keeping the same overall style of game would be disappointing in the extreme just look at the reaction to the discovery of the snow grave route it's exactly the sort of thing that the community is fascinated by and wants to see more of to not deliver on the implicit promise of consequences to your actions in that route would be frankly unconscionable maybe there will be something totally unexpected but Toby clearly knows better than to disappoint on that front and when it comes to his repeated claim that the game will only have one ending the implication here can only be that there will be significantly different contexts to that one ending maybe like all the different versions of the neutral end to undertale with a million different combinations of characters who could have lived or died but with the One Singular idea that the child escapes the underground while the monsters remain below or hey maybe Delta run will really end with the apocalypse and everyone will be dead regardless then things really would work out the same no matter what the real question is what surprises Toby might have for us along the way personally I am highly suspicious of the three save slots we are given access to practically begging players to play along with the story on the different moral Roots as more chapters are released in under you effectively had one save file and the game never forgot our sins even when we attempted to reset what we' done so in Delta run will there be some consequence to trying to have it both ways maybe our pacifist save files will be erased or corrupted as punishment or perhaps they are just normal game save files designed to accommodate this chapter release structure so you won't have to replay parts of the game over and over to experience all the content when new ones come out I try to keep my expectations low but when you're waiting years between chapter releases for a game like this it's inevitable people are going to to pick apart the material and can theorize way past the Creator who might then be pressured to alter things to keep up which is one of the main reasons I'm not a fan of episodic releases but hopefully that kind of stuff will be kept to a minimum we'll just have to wait to see how things play out but as for the future it looks like our next adventure will involve a dark World in the TV maybe pulling suie and toriel in with us sham seems to know something about our next opponent and that it will require something called The Shadow mantle to defeat them but if the next world is the TV world how could he know who that is if the dark Fountain hadn't created their world yet what Secrets does r the mysterious Dark Prince have has Chris just triggered the Roaring with the new Fountain and the one final mystery we're left with is who are you in undertale you the player controlled Frisk the character as your avatar and there was no in-game distinction between the two but that's not the case in Delta run we talked about how there was clearly a divide between the character of Chris and you who is controlling them but I still see there being three options for who you really are are you a part of Chris the player control part that Chris is somehow able to remove are you the soul of another in Universe character that Chris has somehow taken possession of or are you literally you the player of the game sitting behind the screen pressing buttons to make Chris do stuff the first one would mean that Chris is in fact the true player Avatar but that they somehow have the ability to cut off our control the second that Chris somehow took possession of someone's soul that we the player are playing as and third that the soul is us the player the name that we ented for ourselves when we began the game that for whatever reason has ended up inside Chris which of these it turns out to be will likely depend on the level of meta the game ultimately goes to and while they may seem like semantic differences they really are not because depending on which is true the player might be seiz in control of the character Chris's body without exactly asking permission first or Chris may have intentionally sought out the soul which raises the question where did they get it the biggest thing I have not been able to figure out yet is this knowing that the soul functions as outside control over Chris's body that they can remove why would they ever put it back inside who wants to be controlled like that unless there was something to be gained by doing so these themes of control are all over Delta run with things like the supposed lack of it in chapter 1 su's independent actions the question of who controls Chris our manipulation of Noel and perhaps most importantly if none of what we're doing now even matters in the face of The Descent of the Angel and end of the world in Delta run a clear distinction is made between lighteners and darkers with lighteners having many unique powerful abilities and the soul is the culmination of an individual's being so it makes sense why someone like Spanton would try to steal a lightener soul to escape to heaven like how azreal used Chara's human soul to escape the barrier in undertale clearly entities without lightener Souls might want to obtain them to gain their power which makes you wonder could that be what Chris is doing could Chris the only human in the story actually be a darkener or something else and somehow obtained a lightener soul for their own purposes they sure don't look too healthy without it it could even be that the voice of the narrator at the start of the game who seemed so happy to connect with us is actually Chris happy to finally begin their plan the goth cat even says she and Chris had studied the occult together and we know magic is real so maybe that's where they learned how to do this there are some holes in this idea like how Chris removes the soul before creating the dark Fountain could they still do that without a soul perhaps the rules to all this are flexible or maybe they do have two souls or maybe there is some other explanation of why Chris would remove this soul to go do bad kid stuff like slash tires maybe there is just some power that comes from being the player Avatar but Chris just doesn't like being spyon all the time no doubt many of these questions will be answered by simply learning more about Chris as we really don't know much about their history like is the implication that they have always been possessed by the spirit of the player or is it a recent change because there are some hints that Chris isn't acting the way towns folk expect them to when we're in control but the interesting thing is while all of this informs the character of Chris they can come across very differently depending on how you play in a pure pacifist run you the player act like a hero and befriend everyone Chris's lack of reaction looking creepy with the removal of your control so they could possibly slash toriel's tires and open up a new dark Fountain coming across as plain villainous but consider what it's like for Chris if you choose to play something like a snow grave run in this situation regard regardless of what they want Chris is your puppet as you murder dozens of darkers birdley and traumatize Noel in this situation ripping you out of their chest so they can slash toriel's tires could come across like a defensive act to keep you from getting back into the Dark World to hurt more people in that case are we the players fulfilling the same role as whoever influenced jevil and Spanton to turn bad maybe who the villain is Chris or you depends on the way you play the game but will inevitably lead to a confrontation between you either way maybe Chris's creepy stone-faced mannerisms are the result of having their self-identity hollowed out by the existential nightmare of being puppeted by an outside party but they're starting to get used to it too many Mysteries remain and we simply need more information so we'll leave the speculation at that hurry up with those next three chapters Toby and let's hope he doesn't follow the same release trajectory as his dad but one thing is certain whoever you choose to be in this world I guarantee you will have control over how this story plays out because being the child of Destiny who fights to save the world won't amount to much if there's no one left to share it with whichever way you choose to guide the story of Delta room there's one thing Toby doesn't want you to forget that you are never alone when your heart is all alone and there's no nowhere left to go and the faces that you know start to drift away just look deep inside your soul see there's nothing but a whole and the truth the scar upon your heart don't forget I'm with with you in the [Music] dark hey there thanks for watching if you care to support this work of mine
