[Music] quiet children keep still and don't laugh mark on 169 take one to Camelot to Camelot so I recently had the privilege of getting to rewatch money Python and holy grail in a movie theater you make me sad so be it come py something I absolutely recommend if the opportunity ever presents itself brother mayard bring up The Holy Hand Grenade would absolutely blew my mind after maybe more than a decade since I last saw it five three was the way every single [Music] scene is Iconic now stand aside worthy adversary if you haven't seen Grail I guess you can just trust me on that we are the knights who say no not the night who say and if you have seen it I mean just think about it it's a simple question of weight ratios we go straight from the scene about swallows carrying coconuts a 5 O bird could not carry a 1B coconut well it doesn't matter to bring out your dad bring out your dad One n I'm nothing what nothing here your to the modern political ideology scene Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses not from some fical aquatic ceremony yes I have the black knight scene just a flesh wound to the monks to the witch Wang scene if she weighs the same as a duck she's made of wood and [Music] therefore now at this point we're only about 18 minutes into the film proper and I haven't even mentioned the opening credits not the opening title sequence mind you because well there isn't one the pythons couldn't afford to film one more on all of that in a couple of weeks but the literal white on black Bergman 7eventh seal inspired title cards which According to some random statistics I found online contains like 8% of the film's jokes so yeah it's a romp I'm Danny Boyd this is Holy Grail let's go and Now for Something Completely Different I'd like to demonstrate how the commor coconut can be put to more practical use it really is pretty difficult to talk about this movie and its production without getting into its Financial limitations and how restrictions in prep and production spawned a lot of its creative genius no which is why I'm going to focus on all of that next time but I think I have to mention the Coconuts now right are these originals from the film well hold the Coconuts thus then with a clapping ocean bring them together and apart together and apart together and apart together and apart I mean invisible horses it's what instantly sets the absurdest tone of Grail from shot one of scene one war up on second thoughts let's not go to Camelot it is a silly place I think a lot of people are aware that this was a creative solution to not being able to afford real horses and it was inspired by a real practice from old BBC Radio plays to emulate that sound I'm 37 what I'm 37 I'm not old well I can't just call you man you could say Dennis I didn't know you were called Dennis you didn't bother to find out did you Mr Johnson would you come in please and so all of that leads me um to castles yeah how many castles did you look at before you decided on Dune oh we did uh a lot of castles Tony I think we did every castle in the country actually it is a good Castle actually nice thing about this Castle is it has a lot of Interiors which are um still original so it was perfect from our point of view very authentic looking but if he had to leave and we W with him just keep him in here until you or anyone else no not anyone else just me just you get back get Yeah so basically all the castle scenes in grail and there's a lot of them are really just the one Dune Castle privately owned castle in Scotland shot from a ton of different angles and in different rooms to appears different locations for different scenes unlike the Coconuts though this wasn't really an issue of money the Scottish national trust just wouldn't let the pythons use any of their castles why because we wouldn't respect the Dignity of the fabric of the building where the most horrible tortures disemboweling gutting had gone on so we didn't have castles to work with and that's why you see painted cutout castles at different point and then luckily we're able to do jokes about it it's only a model Camelot Camelot Camelot it's only a model [Music] sh and now for something completely completely completely completely completely different Three French maidens tied to a tree for some reason I quite right shut so a few things here and there did get shaved off in the edit of Holy Grail but by and large the final shooting script was extremely tight yes we're we're looking for the Holy Grail our Quest is to find the Holy Grail yeah yes it is yeah yeah every scene was precious your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries creatively financially and for the film's qualification I cut I'm not really surprised how little ended up on The Cutting Room floor because uh we uh needed to include everything we actually shot to get the the movie up to time a scratch your arms off no it isn't well what's that then so yes we were quite uh spare turn over ter B what you can do Terry Gillam's animations helped a lot with that of course stop that stop that stop that clear go on go away go go away but getting there down to those final 90 minutes of legendary scene after scene it didn't happen overnight it was a long process and the movie we have isn't the movie we almost had just one was a few questions sir back at draft one of that not more than 10 or 15% Still Remains um and then we sort of went on playing with it and got it into one shape and in that shape half of it was medieval and half of it was Modern but the time we got the fourth draft it bore no resemblance to the first they were searching for the Holy Grail in herods right where else would you find there was a very good film that was thrown away it's not the real Grail oh wicked bad naughty evil suit oh she is a bad person and must pay the penalty a great film I'm sure but a film too that would be without half of the iconic scenes we know who are you who are so wise in the ways of science I am Arthur King of the Britains and that is a frightening thought once you become more confident you may wish to delegate this task to a partner or young friend leaving you free to concentrate on achieving the authenticity of full eoin motion part of the reason I think every scene in Holy Grail instantly stands out and can be so quickly recalled has a lot to do with the fact that the entire movie is elementally really just a series of individual sketches with a different combination of characters in different locations different conflicts all Loosely threaded together not so un like the original show good morning I'm sorry to have kept you waiting but I'm afraid my uh my walk has become rather sillier recently and so it takes me long the only difference Terry Gillam has is unlike a conventional series of individual sketches those in Holy Grail have essentially had their punch lines cut off allowing them to flow once the next like scenes creating what Gillum calls the illusion of a quote unquote proper narrative no oh go and it's true eggar B's going to be jealous of this one in a couple of weeks I'm going to delve even further into some of the more creative stuff The Troop did and challenges they faced working under such severe Financial restrictions until then I'm Danny Boyd I did not thanks for watching
