this is what's on my iPad 2023 this video is sponsored by paper like let's get into it my iPad of choice is the M1 12.9 inch iPad Pro 2 terabyte model I bought this back when I was editing video full time on the iPad and spoiler alert I'm starting to edit more video on the iPad again the first app I want to start with is files files is the backbone of the iPad for me while there are a ton of good third-party file management apps files is built into the system so when you ever you bring up a save dialog box or an import dialog box that's files and it's kind of really important to me that it stays cohesive well it started off Rocky files has gotten really good over the last few years I stick to using iCloud for my cloud file management service the biggest reason is I'm already paying for it for the extra space to backup devices through files you can also connect to servers and network shares this is how I interact with my navs from my iPad the other really nice feature built into files is the scanner while I don't get a ton of physical documents that I need to scan anymore I get enough that this feature is really useful Safari is the next app and it's one of these no surprise apps that are on my iPad web browsers on iPad os are required to use webkits so basically every web browser is the same but I really like features that are built into Safari like tab groups it also has support for all the modern features of the iPad like split view and Stage manager and all that stuff and I really like it's extension support Safari extensions can be installed right from the App Store and there are a few that are really handy to use the first one that I use is called X search this expands the built-in search support for Safari by default if you type in a phrase in the URL bar it'll pass it to the default search engine with x search you can enable support for a ton of different websites so for example I can type YT and then a phrase and it will search YouTube or I can type a and then search for something on Amazon this is a really nice extension that speeds up browsing the web video mode is an extension for handing playback a video on Safari there are a bunch of controls in here that you can use but I mostly use this extension for Just Two the first is playback speed sometimes I'm in a hurry and those silly YouTubers can talk really slow the second is picture-in-picture support this will force your video into picture-in-picture mode if you watch a lot of videos It's really nice to have the last extension is stop the madness this one cleans up the web it blocks a lot of stuff that can slow down browsing the web on your device this includes bypassing amp protecting system features like copy and paste and blocking link trackers there aren't a lot of good email app options out there for iOS and iPad OS and the one I use is the default mail app it got some really nice updates in iPad OS 16. this includes the ability to remind you about messages later scheduling messages to be sent later the ability to undo sent messages and the best feature drastically faster and improved search I use search for everything in mail but there's one thing missing from mail and that is smart folder support this has been on the Mac for a couple of decades now but to get around this I've been paying for a service called sanebox sanebox is an incredibly useful service I am happy to pay for what this does is it sits in between your email server and your inbox you can set up rules so as new email messages come in they get filtered into smart folders via sanebox I went in here and changed a few settings and one of the settings I really like is now whenever I get an email message from somebody I've never sent a message to it goes into What's called the sane later folder it doesn't go into my inbox I'm very protective of my inbox I get a ton of emails from different com companies and Brands and all these different people and stuff that sometimes I just don't even want to talk to like they don't even bother to look at what I cover on the channel I've gotten some really wild emails over the years so this way those emails don't ever go into my inbox sanebox also judges email and as they come in it judges if an email message is important if it's not it goes into this same later folder if I disagree with how sanebox did some of the filtering I can just drag it to a different folder including my inbox and I will learn from that the next filter is same news this takes all of your newsletters and stuff like that and puts it in this folder and then the last filter I have set up is sane black hole this is where messages go to die any message I get I can drag into this folder and I will never see another message from that sender again no matter what they do it even marks the message as read so I don't get the badge next to the folder which I I am a badge completionist I would go in there and look at it so marked as read never have to see it in my inbox or any other folder I look at this is a big deal for me because I have a public email address I get hundreds of emails a day and a lot of which are companies are signing me up for like their newsletters and stuff without my consent like they are actually doing that even though it's technically illegal uh they're signing me up and I don't want that stuff and we all know the unsubscribe button is not hooked up to anything so I drag those messages in the same black hole never see them again this feature has saved me so much time these aren't the only filtering services that you can pick from in sanebox if you're struggling with your email in whatever way I highly recommend checking out sanebox they've never sponsored me I pay for it myself it's just a service I truly love the next app will be no surprise to anyone that has been watching my videos for long but it is things three I've tried just about every to-do app on the App Store and this is the one that just sticks with me and works with the way my brain works I manage all of my videos sponsors projects ideas and even my personal life out of things I realize it sounds like a lot but I'm somebody that really benefits from having all of my tasks written down in one place things has a really clean design it's easy for task managers to get a billion buttons and I appreciate how things has kept everything looking clean over the years I also really like the areas and project support this makes managing multiple projects really easy I've made a video in the past about how I organize my task manager and I will link to that and everything else I mentioned in the description below things also has one of my favorite extra large widgets this shows you all of your tasks you need to do today and have coming up over the next three days you can also configure this widget to have a new task button in the bottom right hand corner in a future update things will be updating their shortcuts actions and I'm really excited for this I'll do a whole video about that when it's out fantastic how is next but it's on the chopping block for me they recently raised their subscription price by a lot like it was a big jump normally I don't mind paying four subscriptions for apps because I understand it takes time and money to make apps and a lot of these apps that are subscription based that I use there are either one person teams or really small teams and I just like supporting good apps but I don't use my calendar very much especially compared to something like my task manager I use my task manager far more than my calendar I like fantastic hell because of its natural language support it's really easy to add a new calendar event I also really like the calendar group support when I take a break I can turn off my work calendars or when I'm filming something I can turn off my secret calendar so I don't accidentally leak something I also really appreciate the design of fantastic Hal it does a great job at scaling to different window sizes on the iPad in stage manager most calendar apps don't do this fantastic Hal also has great widget support it has a huge variety to pick from I really like the one that shows you a mini month calendar and all of your upcoming appointments but when paying for fantastic house subscription you also get access to the app card hop so it's kind of a two-in-one thing this is an excellent contact management app it's extremely well designed but more importantly its search is so good this is how I use contacts and the built-in contacts app it searches fine but cardhop doesn't a great job so this is another reason why I might keep that subscription but if I'm being honest my fantastic house subscription expires in March and I'll have to make a decision by then right now I'm leaning towards just using the built-in calendar app and built-in contacts app well it's nice to have all the features fantastic Alan Card hop have I don't use them enough to justify this price this video is sponsored by paperlike paperlike recently released their new version 2.1 of their screen protector it improves Clarity while keeping the same textured feeling that I really like this way that beautiful iPad screen shines through but when I use my apple pencil it still feels like I'm writing with paper and pencil and not that plastic on glass feeling I really like this new version of the paper like I actually went through and replaced all of the paper likes on my iPads with this one paper like also recently launched their new digital Pro planner which is a set of 10 different planners you can get for 12.99 us starting off with a daily weekly and monthly version this is also a pay wants product you will receive free updates year after year for as long as paper like makes it I really like these and they are very well thought out planners but between now and the end of January if you buy any paper like Hardware product you will get the digital Pro planner for free I'll put a link in the description below to where you can go check out the paper like version 2.1 and the digital Pro planner my thanks to paperlike for sponsoring this video there are two apps that are the complete backbone to my workflow these are the two apps that I need to get work done everything else could go away it would make things a bit harder but these two apps are the complete backbone I mentioned the first one already and that's things the second one is craft craft is a note taking and document app now full disclosure craft did sponsor me a few months ago but it's an app that I pay for and I use myself craft is a note-taking and document app it could do a ton and I recently made a very detailed video covering how I use it so I'll link to that in the description below as well I do all of my note taking and writing and craft I love its ability to link pages and blocks together it also uses the slash command feature to allow you to insert all different kinds of formatting and media this includes font changes images tables and more you can also publish Pages you work on with a team or send them out to the web so the public can view them craft is my place to go to when I need to sit down and work on an idea or a project drafts is another long time favorite app it's my scratch pad if I need to save a link to something I'm doing or a block of text I store it here drafts is an incredibly fast app and I love how easy it is to store some text and grab it later drafts also has user customizable actions these are automations built right into the app these can get fairly complex but the ones I use are mostly simple I have some templates that get placed in a draft so I can fill them out this helps me keep the work I do looking consistent drafts actions are also great for sending text to another app a lot of times I write out a big email or a message in draft and will then send it over to whatever app this way I have a good editor and make sure everything is properly formatted drafts is another app that I've done a really deep dive video into and I'll put a link to that in the description but if you're just looking for a place to quickly write down text just to capture get it out of your brain drafts is a great place to do that and then you can use the actions to send it off to whatever app you want you know it to live in later runestone is another text editor but this one is for coding it has support for a ton of different languages when it comes to syntax highlighting what I like about runestone is it hooks right into the files app I can grab a file or create a new one in the proper directory and start working right on it if you're somebody that has a lot of preferences about how their text editor should look and work runestone has you covered there are a ton of settings in the appearances and formatting options I'm in the process of rebuilding my website and this is the app that I've been using to modify and write code for it working copy is the other app I've been using to modify my website this is a git client I added my website as a repository all the files that are in that repository show up in the files app under the locations tab so I can open them right in runestone when I make a change I can commit right from working copy working copy also has excellent shortcut support so when I publish a new video I have a shortcut that pulls from the RSS feed of my YouTube channel it grabs the latest video uses regular Expressions to format it as as a blog post and then uses working copy to publish it right to my blog working copy is one of those apps I wish I could use more because of how good it is maybe I need a new development project good notes is a pretty standard app that you see on these what's on my iPad videos between it and notability it kind of has like the whole turn your iPad into a digital notebook Market covered but I use good notes for two things the first is journaling I find this an extremely helpful way to plan out my working day especially when I have a lot going on the second is a way to work out some ideas sometimes I get a sliver of an idea but need to flush it out sitting down with my iPad Apple pencil and good notes has been the best way for me to do it in good notes you can import PDFs as templates and mark them up I also really like the selection of tools and options good notes has to offer reader is my RSS client of choice I've gotten really into RSS as a way of getting news and interesting links lately reader is beautifully designed and has great support for gestures but the feature that has me stuck on using reader is called bionic reading you enable this down at the bottom the way this works is it bolds certain parts of award and keeps the rest standard I know this looks strange but if you're somebody that struggles reading and comp apprehending something just the first time when you read it this will help I don't fully kind of get how it works but I can see a significant difference between when I have it on and when I have it off I'm somebody that has struggled comprehending reading something the first time usually I have to go back and read something a second time just to get it but with this on I read it and I get it right away bionic reading is a framework and API and it's something I would love to see come to more apps but getting back to RSS reader is the app I read from it's got great design it looks absolutely stunning and it has all the support for all the different features that I want in an RSS reader but I use a service called feed bin to gather all of my sources together and then in reader I can log into feedbin there are a ton of different options for Gathering up RSS feeds and giving them to you now some are free but I actually pay for Feed Bend because I really like it first feedbed is extremely fast at updating its sources a lot of the free options get rate limited so you they don't update very quickly but the second reason and this one's a big one for me they give you an email address what you could do with this is when signing up for newsletters you enter this email address instead of your own personal one that way when newsletters show up they go to your RSS reader and not your inbox which that's the way it should work this makes so much sense to me a lot of the newsletters I sign up for are essentially big blog posts so I don't want them showing up in my inbox like I mentioned earlier I'm very protective of my inbox I want them to go to my RSS reader because they're for reading so that's what that's for I like King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table have been on a quest my quest is to find the perfect read it later and bookmarking app and I think I finally have come very close with any box any box is a great app for Gathering links to posts you want to read gear you want to check out or videos you want to watch you build out collections which are basically folders for you to store different stuff in then you can build smart lists based on the types of stuff you have I also use any box for saving links to gear and keyboard stuff I want to check out later it's share sheet extension is particularly good it's really fast to interact with you just select the collection you want to save it to and boom but any box can be used for more than just links you can add images files and even notes but personally I just use it for Gathering links another feature I like about any box is you can change the view so for video folders I have it set to the thumbnail view but for articles I have it in a list View one of the newer apps on my iPad is DaVinci Resolve I haven't been this excited for a brand new iPad app in a long time most of you know I edited all my videos from my iPad for about five years until the app that I was using got some bugs that just prevented me from doing that with resolve on the iPad I've been slowly getting back into editing video on the iPad DaVinci Resolve is very different from other non-linear editors so it's taken me some time to wrap my head around it I'm working on a full video about resolve for the iPad but right now if I can just boil it down to a few points it's exactly what I need from a video editor on the iPad it has two pages from the desktop version of resolve they are the full versions of those pages these are the cut and color pages the cut page works fairly similarly to something like Final Cut I was able to pick up on that one pretty quickly the color page is what I've had issues with it's this node based system it's very different from Final Cut like I said I'm working on a full video about resolve on the iPad that will go deep into my workflow and like kind of like where I'm coming out on working from the iPad versus the Mac Lightroom is my photo editing app over the last few years I've gotten really into photography and I've tried a bunch of different editing apps but Lightroom is that one that gives me the results that I need I've edited hundreds of photos in Lightroom including the images I use as my wallpapers I love the way they've turned out the way I pay for Lightroom gives me a terabyte of cloud storage so I just leave my raw files in the app but also back them up to my navs speaking of the way I pay for Lightroom the plan that I pay for also includes Photoshop now photoshop on the iPad started off Rocky it's missing some key features like the pen tool which still isn't there but Lightroom and Photoshop integrate together really well uh and I'm already paying for it so I use it my Photoshop needs are really small though mostly it's either to replace the screen of a device with a screenshot or to add some text to an image for a thumbnail I'm not doing anything too wild so photoshop on the iPad works for my needs I get asked a lot about how I install third-party fonts on the iPad and I use an app called font case for that though I really wish Apple would bring font book to the iPad with font case you load up your fonts from the files app you then install a profile onto your iPad this installs the fonts so that apps like Photoshop drafts and others can use them this process could be so much simpler if Apple brought font book to the iPad Apple music is next up I doubt anyone needs me to explain what it is but I do want to point out a selection of relaxing and focus driven music kiroku radio is my friend Tom over on the bike reviews Channel this is his album of relaxing and focused music with no lyrics I put this on when I really need to focus uh like when I'm writing out a script or something this plus noise canceling headphones really helps me stay on task kuroku radio isn't just on Apple music it's also on Spotify and YouTube as well I'll include links to those in the description as well if my ADHD is really bad on a given day sometimes even instrumental music can be a bit much that's where dark noise comes in dark noise is an excellent Noise app that has a ton of different background sounds you can pick from it also has beautiful animations when they play but the real power of dark noise is the ability to combine sounds together that make a different scenes this makes it sound so much more real and less like static background noises I have a couple of different scenes I like to use one is the campfire by the river with some wind blowing through the trees another is a cabin with a roaring fireplace going through rain and thunderstorms outside the third and this is my favorite it's called a bad night it's heavy rain with thunderstorms and a creek nearby I could spend hours making scenes in dark noise but instead I like to use the app to get my actual work done next up is peacock people always complain that there isn't a built-in calculator app on the iPad that kind of actually is you can use Spotlight for calculations but if you want an app check out peacock it's a scientific calendar and way more than what I need but it's been around in the Apple app space for decades it is one of those apps that has just been around forever but it always has the latest support for the latest update it was there with Stage manager support split view support shortcut support it has an all I bought this app years ago and use it every day it works great in either slide over or stage manager scaling the window size down or up expenses is the newest app on my iPad I just found this one I literally can't underscore just found this and I just passed my testing but I'm gonna use this for my 2023 income and expense tracking for the business you can set up different sheets and add stuff to it as income or expenses and it'll total everything up I'll have a lot more to say on this next year after I've used it a bit more but one of the issues I have found already is there is no shortcut support but you can export your sheets as CSV files so that's good shortcuts is up next and it is the backbone of my automation setup I have so much running through shortcuts I'm gonna do a whole video I'm doing you know this what's on my device series but I'm going to do a whole video that's kind of a part of this that are the shortcuts I use every single day shortcuts is super important to the way I work they are blocks of automations I can run from my iPhone iPad or Mac I have some that put my computers into specific States for like filming or others that generate projects and tasks for things and some that just play music to my home pods I mostly run shortcuts from Spotlight when I have a keyboard attached to my iPad but I also use the widget when in tablet mode I appreciate how there are a few different ways of running a shortcut on an iPad ferret is up next and it's not an app I use a whole lot anymore but it just got a major update and I want to mention it ferret is a spoken word audio editor it was built for the idea of editing podcasts voiceovers or something like an audiobook together it has a ton of features like strip silence and Titan audio but in ferrite 3 the UI got a really nice overhaul but my favorite new feature is 2x playback when you're editing something you can listen back at 2x speed to save you some time this is how I do like my first pass on video edits so I can just fly through my a-roll cuts timer is my time tracking app of choice but this app works as a front-end for toggle which doesn't have a great iOS or iPad OS app I use time tracking to see how I spend my time it's not for everybody and I'm no by no means saying everyone should do time tracking but if you're somebody that's self-employed or if you're curious about how you actually spend your time you should try it out trust me it's different than what you think it is with timery I was able to build a bunch of quick timers I can trigger right in the app and start time tracking I also built a series of shortcuts using timery's actions that change Focus modes device States and start timers based on what I'm doing timer 8 also has amazing widget support so I can start a timer right from the home screen as well I found making sure it's easy for me to start a timer is key for me to remembering to actually Time Track timer e also has excellent reports as well it breaks down a given time period on how you spent your time there's also a report widget that I use to see how I spent my time in a given week or day while I totally don't think time tracking is something most people will even care about it's important to me in making sure I'm balancing my time appropriately dealing with PDFs is important to just about everyone I use the app PDF expert to read and modify PDF docs now disclosure they are a previous sponsor but I paid for the app myself I mostly use this though to fill out PDFs that aren't already ocr'd I get a lot of those surprisingly PDF expert makes it really easy to add text fields and markup stuff but there's also a ton of different Tools in here as well that you can use highlights is another PDF app I use but it's different I use this one for research if I download a spec sheet or get set a reviewer's guide I use highlights to pull all the important information from it so I don't have to go through all the fluff you can highlight underline strikethrough the text in a PDF whatever you do to that text it will then show up on the right side this makes it really easy to get just the key info that you want floating player is an app that lets you send whatever you are listening to in apple music to the picture in picture window this way you get all the album artwork on screen while you're doing other stuff you also get playback controls as well really handy if you like playing music while working or doing other things on your iPad parcel is a delivery tracking app I have a big announcement coming and I've been ordering a ton of stuff lately this gives me a list of all the deliveries I'm expecting and when they should show up parcel is also great because it hooks right into Amazon and automatically adds anything you order from there right to your app it also works really well with FedEx which not all delivery tracking apps do carrot weather got a big iPad update this last year it has been designed to take full advantage of the large iPad canvas honestly I really don't need a subscription based weather app Apple weather would be fine for me but so much work goes into this app I'm happy to support the developers they do such a great job there's an option pick from multiple weather sources in carrot weather you can design your own UI it has excellent widgets and even notifications if you live in places where weather can change rapidly which is not California the last widget on my home screen is the first party Apple battery widget I like it because it shows me the battery percentage of my attached devices like airpods and the magic Trackpad I just wish I could take the iPad out of this list since the battery is already in the top right corner I could have multiple devices paired to my iPad and not all of them fit on the battery widget so that's it that's what's on my iPad what are your favorite apps that you have installed on your iPad let me know in the comments below my thanks to paperlike for sponsoring this video if you liked the video hit the Thumbs Up Button subscribe if you haven't already thank you all so much for watching have a great day
