Itโ€™s our first time in Hiroshima and we are so excited to explore this often overlooked Japanese city rich in its historical and culinary significance in short, food Our first stop: a meal at the legendary Okonomi-mura A building bursting with over 20 different okonomiyaki shops each with their own unique take on this savory Japanese pancake so this tiny area alone is wall-to-wall with restaurants so itโ€™s our first time at this popular okonomiyaki building settled on this restaurant and i think weโ€™re going to try the ron special which has pork, egg, oyster, shrimp, squid, octopus and green onion, so a little bit of everything you can also add some extra toppings - do you wanna add anything to our order? - definitely double up on the hiroshima oysters they take your orders and cook all of the okonomiyaki before seating customers by batch it takes some time for all the layers to cook as everything is prepared on the spot ordered their juice made with homemade yuzu jam and a hiroshima lemon cider oyster? dozo! enjoy! each person needs to order an individual okonomiyaki oyster okonomiyaki super fresh and juicy the ron special so hearty and delicious cheers to this super friendly and hardworking brother and sister duo this building is an okonomiyaki paradise good way to eat your vegetables Hiroshima Okonomiyaki is popular for its layered cooking technique the first step is a thin layer of flour followed by a mountain of cabbage, thin strips of pork yakisoba noodles and a fried egg oysters are also a popular local topping time for a night walk post-okonomiyaki window shopping this shop has some of our fave brands lots of hiroshima specialties at the konbini miyajima craft beer setouchi lemon shrimp crackers hiroshima lemon cider lemon hot sauce bad badtz maru cake look at this, it looks like raw squid, uni and crab salted squid guts last stop was a local grocery to pick up some fruit banana and eggs for ralph hiroshima oranges for sam time to explore hiroshima this shopping street was close to our hotel excited to visit this cafe with brances in hiroshima and tokyo took home some iced coffee bags the original building miraculously survived the atomic blast in 1945 but was reconstructed for eathquake-proofing in 2016 a section of its original wall remains a part of this new building, whic is now the city's most popular bakery edamame and cheese fougasse custard cream buns sakura bread decided to try their curry donut they also have an extensive selection of cooked food breadcrumbs are so crisp outside and the inside dough is so soft the curry itself is really delicious also trying this fermented vegetable juice for the first time kind of tastes like tomato and carrot with a yakult-y flavor this cool little shop is owned by a mother and son whose family has run this umbrella store since 1906! the most beautiful and unique japanese umbrellas picked this cat print for ralph's mom amazed by how tiny these become the owner told me their family dog was named aru so i asked why he's named after al pacino! aru / al the shop also has a really cool selection of clothes picked up this silver ring packed in a handmade paper bag from india so surprised to meet merrick and emily from brisbane who watch our vlogs๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ‘‹ more staff portraits on film ralph was craving curry so we looked for this shop with good reviews ryu the curry shop owner was super friendly - ashta kumamoto (tomorrow, kumamoto) - kumamoto?
