There's a math error at 0:13 - 0:28. 738,000 is about 0.5% of 142,000,000, not 0.005%. When calculating 738,000 divided by 142,000,000 you get ~ 0.005. That means that 738,000 is about five thousandths, or 0.5%, of 142,000,000.

Alaska It's a vast and enormous landmass in side of which You could fit all of Texas, California, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois and New Jersey Those states have a combined population of 142,000,000 people. Alaska has a population of just 738,000 or just 0.005% of the same population. And located here at the Northern edge of the state is an interesting town called Barrow. This isn't going to be a normal video from me Because unlike all of my previous videos, I actually went here in person to film this. Barrow is located well into the Arctic Circle And is just a mere 2,100 kilometers away from the North Pole which makes it the northernmost city in the United States. Over 4,200 people live here in an environment where the temperature will remain below freezing for eight months from early October until late May. The high temperature is only above freezing for around 120 days of the entire year and there are 160 days of below freezing temperatures every year. However, freezing temperatures and snowfall can happen in any month, including during the summer months of June through August When the sun sets below the horizon on November 18th or 19th, it won't rise back above the horizon for another 65 days. This is known as the long polar night. and the sun will stay beneath the horizon for about 2 months. The opposite happens during summertime When the sun rises on May 11th it won't set back beneath the horizon again for another 80 or so days. This is known as the long midnight sun where the town is cast in unending daylight. Despite the permanent presence of the sun however, the temperature remains very cold averaging 21.2°F (-6°C) during May and 35.7°F (2.056°C) in June July is the warmest month the town experiences all year With an average high temperature of 47°F (8.3°C) and an average low of 35°F (1.67°C) The highest temperature ever recorded in the town was 79°F (26.1°C) while the lowest was -56°F (-48.9°C) But even in July and August, the low temperature will fall beneath the freezing mark for 24 days. Because of its location right next to the Arctic Ocean, Barrow is also one of the cloudiest places on the planet. The town is completely overcast for slightly more than 50% of the entire year and it's located so far North that if you went to the opposite side of the world from Barrow you would be located in Antarctica. This point right here is called Point Barrow, and it's the Northernmost point of the entire mainland North American continent. To stand here is to literally stand at the end of the entire North and South American mainland landmass that begins at the Southern tip of South America. To go any further North you would either have to venture into the icy expanse of the Arctic Ocean or go to the islands of the Canadian archipelago To get here however, is somewhat difficult. Barrow is a very remote place and there are no roads that connect the town to the outside world. It's an isolated community that's impossible to drive into or out of, so the only way in or out for most of the year is to fly through the town's small airport. Despite this incredible isolation, Barrow really is a true town. Inside this city you can find a post office, a high school, a bank, a police department, a fire department, restaurants, a grocery store, and hundreds of houses. When the ice in the ocean melts during the Summer, you can take a boat into town A large ferry which brings supplies to the town like cars and ATVs comes just once per year during this time. But since the water is frozen for most of the year, getting in by ship is usually impossible, making air travel the only feasible way for not only people to get in or out but also supplies food, gasoline, alcohol, mail, and just about everything else has to be flown into the city. This makes everything in town extremely expensive From $17 DiGiorno pizzas to $40 bottles of detergent. Living in Barrow is not only freezing cold but also incredibly expensive. I know that this wasn't a usual video for me and I'm not sure how well it will go over, so please let me know in the comments if you'd like to see more content like this in the future. Also, when I went to Barrow I didn't travel alone. I also went with two other YouTube channels that you may already be familiar with -- Wendover Productions and Second Thought. If you enjoyed this video then you should go ahead and check out their videos next if you want to learn more about Barrow and what it's like living there This video was also helped made possible by my incredible patrons over at Patreon So if you'd like to support the channel in any way then you can visit my Patreon by clicking here.
