welcome fans of ogre battle and tactics ogre would you like to know what the hell happened to your beloved franchise well today we're about to find out exactly what so let's begin [Music] [Music] [Music] Qwest was founded in 1988 in tokyo they started with a bunch of platformers and RPGs some of them never released outside Japan in 1991 however they released magical chase for the turbo graphics 16 a cute size color that nowadays is extremely expensive going for around five thousand dollars completing box insane but true anyway back at the early 90s they wanted to try a different approach to the tactical genre and Nintendo seemed like a good home for RPGs upon hiring genius writer jazz Sumi Matsuno they began development of ogre battle march of the black queen both the title and subtitle were taken from songs of the classic band queen as matt suna was heavily influenced by their music the idea of the game was to create an original immersion into a world with giant maps as a real-time strategy RPG players will control an entire army through several different groups of characters and monsters to conquer or liberate certain locations in the maps the main design of this game was headed by mattoon himself along with artists akihiko yoshida if you don't know who that guy is well just look at the background if that doesn't look familiar I'm pretty sure these girl does ogre battle was released for the Super Famicom in 1993 but it wasn't brought to North America until 1995 now they call this game as the fifth chapter of the saga weird where where the other four chapters then in any case it meant highly positive reviews but wasn't exactly a commercial success nevertheless quest was already preparing for a new entry in the series tactics ogre let us clean together again with another subtitle from a song by Queen was released in October 1995 all so for the Super Famicom but only in Japan the game was allegedly too hard for Western players so nobody wanted to take their chances to localize it it was directed written produced and designed by destiny Matsuno again with Akihiko Yoshida involved as well as Hiroshima nagawa on the graphic design as you can see it was now a strategy RPG an isometric tactical game with players managing single units this time in turns the game had a very deep and complex story mostly revolving around politics in a revolution led by the main characters in Japan this game was a commercial success and the story graphics and gameplay mechanics were overly praised it was now the seventh chapter of the saga huh what happened to the sixth chapter then that very same here mat-su no Yoshida and even mena gawa decided to quit quest and go work for squaresoft of course they didn't take the rights of the franchise with them so they decided to start working on a spiritual sequel that would later be called Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation meeting overly commercial success and becoming a cult classic just like vagrant story another game made by this trio and squaresoft back in 1995 however quest was devastated by the loss of three of their key figures but even so they decided to start working on a new project however they wasted no time exploding the two successful games that had already made a name for them creating parts of both to the Sega Saturn and the PlayStation in 1996 and 1997 the PlayStation versions were the only ones that were localized outside Japan and it will be the first time we will get to play tactics ogre let us clean together in North America several small changes were made in this port but the difficulty was still very present regardless they weren't welcome outside Japan both ogre battle and tactics ogre and faded into obscurity thanks to the enormous success of other RPGs on both the Saturn and especially the PlayStation specifically Final Fantasy Tactics butt quest wasn't ready to give up yet in the West they knew they could continue the series without Matt suno and friends and they proved it to the world with the release of auger battle person of lordly caliber in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 again a subtitle from a song by Queen to respect the custom Matson who had created it played very similar to the first oh girl battle but in a friendlier approach to the Western gamers and a challenge still very present inside its vast gameplay mechanics storing characters were part of a deep and excellent plot once again delving into politics and war thankfully then the game was a success and it quickly became one of the most sought-after RPGs on the Nintendo 64 North America will see a release of it in the year 2000 sadly quest made the one mistake that will start costing them the future of the series the game was successful yes but they released it for the wrong console the Nintendo 64 barely had any RPGs and was far from being a good home for a game like this and even though it had been published in North America by Atlas the original publisher of the series was still Nintendo so quest had no choice but to accept reality and tragically the losses and by the way this was allegedly the sixth chapter in the ogre battle saga so now we have chapters 5 6 & 7 but still no chapters from one through four instead of delivering such chapters they randomly decided to create a couple of spin-offs in 2000 and 2001 one of them was legend of ogre battle Gaiden Prince of shinobi ax originally titled as to walk together as a side story to tactics auger for the Neo Geo pocket color we're then they may get another tactics auger spin off in an attempt to continue milking the name called the knight of Lotus for the Game Boy Advance in 2001 I had to lose localize it to North America the following year but by then quest was very near bankruptcy this game was a strategy RPG very similar to its predecessor but obviously made by an entirely different crew again with an outstanding story the battle mechanics and a memorable presentation however it was quickly overshadowed by many other RPGs in the Game Boy Advance such as the Fire Emblem series and yes you guessed it Final Fantasy Tactics advance in 2003 the night of Lotus was barely successful and it instead became a hidden gem by the end of 2002 Nintendo wanted nothing to do with quest anymore their games weren't selling it was as simple as that quest declared bankruptcy and most of its employees were hired by Square Enix the following year in 2005 during the development of Final Fantasy 12 jessamy matsuno who have been behind the main idea of the game suddenly resigned from square he claimed it was due to an illness but in truth Matson who had always been a rebel with much cost and just couldn't handle working for other people he became a freelancer instead and even worked with companies like level 5 and Platinum Games okay back to quest now that they had the rights to the series and most of the quest employees were working for it Square Enix granted minagawa & Friends the opportunity to create a reimagining of their all-time classic tactics ogre mini Ogawa assembled the team convinced Matt sooner to temporarily return and they quickly started working on what would later become an enhanced port for the PSP released in 2010 that is nine years after the franchise have temporarily banished this port was localized again by Atlus to the west this will also be the first time Europe will meet an official release of the game in its territories aside from the beer talk console read releases on the week tactics ogre on the PSP was yet another commercial success but once again became quickly overshadowed by many other RPGs on the system back then since it didn't meet Square Enix's expectations the company finally dropped the series and buried it to the ground well explaining at this point what happened with ogre battle saga is pretty much obvious it was one thing after another the key developers leaving the company Nintendo's expectations not being satisfied quest going bankrupt Matt sooner leaving Square Enix Square Enix his expectations not being satisfied it all comes down to one simple thing this franchise was never really successful to begin with quest tried they truly did but unfortunately it was to no avail it's still there with the initial games being re-released for virtual consoles but no new titles are on plans for development this series is completely dead and it will probably take a big effort from its three key figures and most quest-x employees to bring it back but when Square Enix has the rights to an obscure cult classic franchise we all know it's most likely doomed forever we may never see a new title again but at least today we learn what the hell happened to ogre battle [Music] you know I'm not exactly a fan of these franchise one bit but I do respect it a hell of a lot and it just saddens me to see one franchise that is so historically important just death do you have any idea how many RPGs these franchise influenced a lot and I mean it not only Final Fantasy Tactics a lot so how can squaring just let it die well still a business and if something doesn't sell it goes away that is the sad reality of today's capitalism that's it for this video thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe and share this video with your friends see you next time [Music] you
