hey guys Joshua Peterson your Peterson electric it is April 20 19 I want to go over with you if you're gonna wire a detached garage or attached but typically if it's detached what should you plan for first of all my code is still pretty vague about wiring them there are certain counties and cities that are not restrictive as far as the voltage car charging units and stations I am in Boulder County today finishing up a job if you guys have followed me on this house through the winter and the fall of 2018 I'll show you more in the next video but just want to let you know that in this area for Lafayette which is Boulder County they expect that you will wire an adequate - at least a 50 amp electrical charger plug so that kind of sets back some of the tone in certain parts of the code I think it's a little confusing in the NEC I am in the 2017 it's about the change in next year in the 2020 but want to go over with you a few codes just to consider so we have to look for it but the first thing is it talks about in the 2017 I of the handbook I always have the handbook said like the drawings but they do talk about garages and this is going to be in two 10.50 two F or excuse me g1 and each attached garage and each detached garage with electric power at least one receptacle outlet shall be installed in each vehicle Bay not more than five and a half five and a half foot above the floor so what they're stating there is that is for electrical charging stations they put this in 2014 I believe implemented it by 17 and now the last three years we've had to practice this so in the class that I take with the associates of inspectors around here basically what they were looking for with that was trying to have power separate from lighting there was an addition and an amendment in 11 or 14 that they stated they wanted outside lights separate from inside lights and outside pluck separate separate from inside plugs they went away with that because I was redundantly stupid but now they've gotten to a point where they're saying okay we want an outlet in each Bay and I remember raising my hand to them saying okay well that's great most of us know you have to have a 20 amp 120 volt circuit serving a garage not 15 amp for the outlet but the code states only one outlet has to serve the whole garage it doesn't include garage door openers they don't care if you lift it by your hand or you're gonna basically use a hardwired outlet and then plug it in so that's not including that that's just accessibility at you know 48 to five-foot inches there so you can actually use it for that purpose of just plugging stuff in that doesn't go far and most of us especially our attached garages a lot of those outlets will share with other areas in the house maybe the front and back porch as well keep in mind that when you're doing a detached garage and you're only doing a 120 volt circuit out here if you're going underground then there are certain code restrictions on your depth and 305 but you gotta also keep in mind that you're gonna be plugging in a prisoner freezer most likely like I do I have two frigerators in a deep freeze in my garage I have two separate circuits for all that not including the garage stuff in there too so I keep that separated because I just don't want to lose all that food and my boys and I are gonna get into hunting and so as we can basically pack that freezer full we don't want to lose our meat the other thing you have to keep in mind is that they did not state in 625 for vehicles charging in a garage or admitted to go back forward to 210 to say okay if you're doing that as each Bay for an outlet for instance Alicia show them this is a three-car garage one two three if you have a two-car garage and then an extension in the back that's hole that's still three-car garage they expect an outlet to be served but I remember raising my hand and talking to the guys some of these people that are writing the code and I says what you didn't indicate if it's a 20 amp 30 amp 120 volt 240 volt 40 amp 50 amp and now with Tesla the capsule it's a hard wired it's an 80 amp so it's it's still a very brand-new concept unfortunately it seems like the code can be 10 years behind so for future proofing out you got to keep that in mind that you have to have an outlet for each Bay it does refer you also to 10 dot 70 it talks about an additional lighting outlet shall be installed in the following at least one wall switch lighting control shall be controlled for hallways attached garages in detached garages with electric power so mind you when they talk about an outlet they're not tacking about your outlet that is a receptacle to terms an outlet is an outlet of power light smoke detector dimmer GFCI it doesn't really matters multiple things that could be an outlet and outlet of a disconnect for an AC but what they're stating there is it's an it's a lot it's a switchable light outlet so for instance these are switchable okay they're stating that you have to have it but the other thing they're saying on here is for the dwelling unit attached garage a detached garage with electrical power at least one sweaty lighting switch outlet shall be provided for illumination for exterior and outdoor areas a exa Dean's of the garage so for instance you have a man door here right you see my box there you have to have a knot you have to have a light you have to have a light here in this man door this right here going out this door for the front we put three because the customer requested three now a lot of people say if I have a ring flood or just a normal flood with emotion does that count yes it is it's a switchable unit because you drive up and it turns on now if it goes out and you go to sell the place you got to fix it but that is a switchable unit as well walk me to a band or they want to be to know that you're able to basically turn this on and that light turns on okay a lot of this is a little extra that we've done inside of this area and I'll get into the next video on it but some of how we've done the LED lighting also refers to 220 5.30 and 220 5.30 is talking about the outside branch circuits and feeders these are definitely just outside circuits with feeders and branch circuits so it talks about in dwelling Nets and I could mark it here and see if I could find now ningke garages for buildings and other structures the structure is a house a structure is a building so as a shed so as a pump house that you do four pumps per pond a number of supplying a building or other structure that is served with a branch circuit feeder on the load side of a service and disconnect shall be supplied with only a feeder and a branch circuit permitted by two 25.30 a through e where a branch circuit or feeder originates is additional buildings or structures the only one of the feeder branch circuits shall be permitted to be power to backed original structure special areas conditions fire pumps emergency systems legally required standby systems optional standby citizen parallel power cord production systems systems designed for connection multiple services enhanced in rehabilitate it's what I grow over and look they just added this in 17 electrical vehicle charging systems listed labeled and identified for more than a single branch circuit or feeder so basically is absolutely correct to stand by that because they do keep in mind that 230 dot 79 it states if you're feeding sir power or circuits a single-family dwelling okay it is a structure but a one-family dwelling for a family is considered something that where people live sleep and bathe and eat that's how you know the service disconnecting mean shall be rated for not less than a hundred amps three wire all other areas of dwelling which is not a dwelling sorry it's a structure could be 60 amps and that's assuming that not less than rated than 60 amps okay and then you can also have the installation consisting of two branch circuits and it shall not be less than 30 amps and then one circuit installation at 15 amps so it's a little confusing if you're wiring a shed common sense you can do it on 15 amps of 20 amps 120 volt GFCI protected under ground look up your direct burial figure out your wiring method you're done if you're going to a garage this is what gets confusing you cannot bring one circuit to a detached garage because you have to have lights and outlets separated and if they do share with the conduit underground then that still doesn't count so no matter what you really have to do a detached garage bring out at least 30 amps personally I don't think that's enough for any guy with a hobby or any person nowadays doing a volt cars people do kilns they have RVs they do multiple things of hobbies that could be frigerators and freezers I've seen a lot of other situations where they're doing weed but they're using their purpose for their garage and a lot of different things they weld they take the MiG they use a woodshop so if those aren't enough things just to think about that alone is enough areas or they're just heat their garage and turning into a gym so again 30 amps is not enough but they are stating in here that if you're gonna bring power that's gonna be of a substantial size you should not be less than 60 amps well nowadays with the evil cars that really kicks that in the pants quick and 6:25 it states that you cannot you have to be a hundred twenty five percent of the major load that can be served of the of that unit and the chargeable station then if it's a 50 amp Siemens it has to be under 25 percent of that wire size if it's going to be a leaf or a juice box those are 30 to 40 amps 3 wire for wire doesn't really matter anytime you bring power out to a garage it has to have the 2 hots a neutral and is grounding EGC grounding electrode conductors as well if you detach in a garage such as this it has to have au fer so I'm gonna go through the practicality what I did next but I want you to keep in mind that when you're bringing power to Grudge it better be a 4 wire if you call us up and say hey we're just gonna redo a couple things and you don't have four wires underground and you're getting that permitted there's no way they're gonna pass that you've got to dig up that trench and start over and keep in mind that evoke part 125 percent if it basically states that that that capsule by Tesla is running 80 amps then you know basically you're looking at 3 10.15 B's to basically when you're running at a 6 degree Celsius column because a 1 10.14 see you are under a number - sangs you are not in the 75 degree Celsius you're under number one gauge actually so because you're under that number one gauge if you're pulling your wire then you're only good at 60 n or a six degrees Celsius and if you're doing aluminum that's a lot less maybe it's a you are d or r HW you still have to consider that the weakest link is your breaker so they're gonna basically say a hundred amps - garage is a 1 odd and if you're looking at ringing power out for a Tesla that's 80 amps you can't even bring less than the number one to that garage now if you're doing copper it's a whole nother deal you could definitely do number three's possibly number four because you're in 275 degrees Celsius with copper you might get away with number fours and one inch in the ground but the point of the matter is is there's a lot of ways to wire these and keep in mind your evil power Tesla base states that they have to be copper rated connections though their connections are aluminum braided they still want copper so when you're doing that at 80 amps you do have you know what he can do pipe you could pipe it in a one-inch and number fours I've done that plenty of times but the other thing you might end up having to consider is when you up size that hundred twenty-five percent that number for now is to really be a number three or number two so again because you're pulling wires to your garage wires have to be adequate because your Tesla will bounce now keep in mind you do not have to or take any power to any detached garage they don't care it's not a habitable place you can use a head lamp and walk out and get in your car every single day but if you are gonna bring power to your house you have to update the current standard or excuse me from your house to your garage you have to go update the current standard again guys hopefully it'll help you out sorry it was a little long and we'll show you the next video
