What It's Like to Live in a Sears Catalog Home | HGTV

NARRATOR: Home Diaries-- every house has a story. We're the And our house came from a Sears catalog. It was built in 1928. You choose your home out of the catalog, and then they send the kit. Our house is the Martha Washington, which I love. It just screams All-American. It was the second most expensive home in the catalog, at $3,700 and some odd change. They send everything that it takes to finish your house-- plumbing, nails, paint, all the floors. They used to be delivered on train, and, you know, everything was numbered. And you basically just put this kit together. What I love the most about our house is the feel. It's not fancy in any means. It's just charming. I absolutely love my built-ins. Love the leaded glass, the window seat. How many people have window seats anymore? The staircase, it's just smart building. I love the light in this room. I love all the French windows. You know, nowadays, we have air conditioning. But back in the day, when they built this home, that was really important, to be able to open those windows and let the air in. This is so warm, so bright, so comfy. It's my spot. Hey, Belle. How are you? Hi, Sammie! One of the reasons we love this house is because of the neighborhood. 10 homes on the street are Sears homes. Yeah, this is a Sears home. This is the Mitchell plan, built, we believe, in 1932. We liked it at once. They're really solidly built. This is a Sears home up here. This house was built in '32. Norman Rockwell homes is probably a term that I would use. There's a sense of pride that you have, when you own the Sears home, to try to keep that quality. I love the American style Sears homes. There is that wonderful feeling of, [sigh]. I think it's fantastic. It's a piece of American history.
