there are a whole lot of yu-gi-oh spin-offs most of them featuring random letters or numbers in some form or another you've got your gx your five d's your x y z's aka xz's but despite this endless stream of alphabet soup there is one type of yu-gi-oh letter that i feel like the least amount of people talk about r it's the first ever yu-gi-oh spin-off and one that follows the extremely popular original crew but there are still a whole lot of reasons why you might have missed this bad boy the first time around let's talk about it today's video is once again brought to you by our returning partner expressvpn no matter how many things changed for me in 2020 expressvpn has provided the same great service all year round they are consistently a top rated and top reviewed virtual private network and with good reason expressvpn encrypts your data to keep it secure from hackers and it masks your ip to keep your information private from third parties and of course my favorite expressvpn skill they also allow you to change your server location to over 90 new countries this turns my netflix into super netflix accessing thousands of new region locked shows and movies that i didn't have access to before in the uk i can watch your name in australia i can stream detective pikachu and in japan they even have brand new anime airing like the new season of haikyuu to the top special thanks again to expressvpn for their partnership this year between supporting our content and providing a constant high quality vpn for my family they were one of the few things i could truly depend on in 2020 find out how you can get three months free by clicking on the link in the description or by going to expressvpn.com the jwits so what exactly is yu-gi-oh r it's the first original spin-off to the yugioh manga it is even older than yu-gi-oh gx by about half a year first debuting in japan on april of 2004 and despite seeming like something that should be somewhat mainstream in the yugioh fandom there are a lot of things that make r a little stranger than your usual spin-off instead of your usual small one-shot spin-off it's a chunky 1000 pages in five volumes instead of being after the main plot it's inserted into the middle of the original story instead of being made by the creator of yu-gi-oh it was written and illustrated by one of his assistants instead of getting its own anime it remains one of the only major yu-gi-oh stories to remain manga only and instead of dropping before gx like it did in japan we wouldn't see it officially localized in english until 2009 after 5d's had already begun airing it's a funny little relic of yugioh's past and if yu-gi-oh has taught us anything about old relics it's that we should dig them up first and ask questions later here's my volume by volume reaction to yu-gi-oh r book one by the way i'm going to use these guys as original english names because i'm the world's worst weeb of all time okay thank you for your understanding we start right at the end of battle city where merrick's getting his ass blasted by the dark magicians oh that's right this is a filler arc it takes place right in between battle city and the millennium world just like several other of the anime filler arcs aka cramming as much extra card game activity as possible before yugi's thirst for card games dries up in the desert here we meet yako tenma the adopted protege of pegasus who we conveniently have never heard of before yakko mistakenly thinks that yugi killed pegasus and plans his revenge you took everything from me i don't even know who you are oh yeah if you haven't read the original manga this isn't like the anime where he's just alive again he's definitely super dead setting in the footsteps of his mentor he attempts a takeover of kaiba corp seeking kaiba's solid vision hologram program kaiba is away in america which apparently lets the world's greatest hacker just hacked the entire company in one afternoon he challenges yugi to a duel where he reveals that he has extra super powerful secret pegasus made cards that we have conveniently never heard of until now the wicked god cards which were made to stop the god cards basically for all the god cards that exist in the original yu-gi-oh there's a new edgy evil version of them here the evil version of raw lets him make evil black clones yuki is so shocked that his op card can actually be destroyed that the duel just kind of ends right in the middle so i've talked in the past about how taya has been treated pretty disrespectfully in the yugioh manga but in r they really give her a chance to sho no no she's just a damsel in distress literally the entire series in order to save taya yugi and his friends have to defeat 13 brand new boss duelists in order to climb kaiba corp and re-challenge this dude okay so one problem with cramming in 13 plus brand new characters is that most of these early duels are over in an instant i'm gonna steal your dark magician actually no okay good game oh hey joey gets a duel oh joey's gonna lose with an rng card oh actually no okay good game and wait is that banded keith oh yeah if you haven't read the original manga this isn't like the anime where he's just alive again he's definitely super dead okay even though these beginning duels are pretty bland it is super nostalgic seeing some of these old monsters make their way back onto the pages if i didn't know better that kazuki takahashi wasn't the illustrator for this i never would have guessed it akira ido copied his card art and style flawlessly and who doesn't get nostalgic at watching dark magician girl blast away with diffusion wave most hey wait isn't that cheating yeah that's cheating it even says right here your spellcaster's got to be level seven or higher he didn't even boost her level like he did in the anime okay i know the yu-gi-oh makes up the rules as it goes and r has its own hybrid rules too but still i have standards most of these bosses are bland baddies but the real star of the show here is this badass duelist granny complete with dual disc wheelchair in the ultimate no you moment yugi despels her d spell before blasting her with archefiend of gilfer halfway up the tower it looks like yaakov is ready to duel yugi early uh oh looks like he's got an evil obelisk too book two how's yoogi gonna beat two evil god cards by busting out an actually sick brand new fusion card combining the three knights for arcana night joker this is his first awesome appearance we wouldn't see this amazing monster card in the anime until zexel alright you ready for the most ridiculous soap opera shenanigans ever yugi wins but it wasn't yakko after all it was actually his secret twin but his brain was hacked i guess if enough people create dual energy it will allow pegasus to revive and take over taya's body for some reason the twin's name is gekko and it turns out he actually is good what's that in the sky daddy's home it's kaiba time and that means blue eyes white fan service blue eyes isn't really any good in an actual duel it's just something pretty to look at i should have said that i should not have said that or you shouldn't have said that book three okay so now the good twin gecko is dueling for eugene he basically dumps his entire deck into the discard pile so he can wreck with an op end game combo next up is arguably the worst duel of the entire manga joey ends up at a dead end which means he has to fight the dead end boss a girl named riko kitamuri who's been playing duel monsters for one month so naturally she's completely destroying joey by turn three setting up a massive defensive wall and forcing joey to deck himself by 10 cards every time he declares an attack he is clearly absolutely going to lose this one his strategy he verbally insults her telling her that she's dueling like she's scared and that her strategy is just plain boring he just constantly goads her into losing by saying garbage like a defensive win will never let you see the soul of your opponent eventually she takes the bait attacks and loses even for joey this is scummy as hell and tristan even calls him on it thankfully there are still a few honorable duelists left in this manga like sedokaiba who always plays by the rule he just cracked him over the head with the briefcase he's bleeding in his mouth every duelist soul is actually absorbed by the cards that they play and you can use their old decks to uh revive them and that's how he revived bandit keith you're telling me that this dude who was so obsessed with pegasus that he's taken over an entire company to revive him decided to make his first test subject a dude that pegasus himself already killed it makes no sense but i guess the evil of the cards is dripping into his brain so nothing makes sense anymore yugi and gekko face off against the second and first ranked duelists at the end of their exhausting boss rush lil yugi's baby toy deck starts popping off blowing up everything into legos he even does a baby mind crush of his own complete with the legos uh is he gonna be okay book four for the second time now gekko says he'll take over for yugi and will fight as the good guy i mean he won last time so how bad could it go [Music] it looks like yugi's path to the final boss is over but that's okay because kaiba's got a grudge match to get his company back anyways kaiba gets blue eyes ultimate but the wicked avatar copies into evil blue eyes ultimate complete with schoolyard level pettiness everything that it copies has the same attack plus one this seems like too much for kaiba to handle but thanks to the power of plot armor wait wait he lost oh my god kimball lost book five this is by far the longest volume which is surprising considering that it contains just two duels rematch between banded keith and joey wheeler this is hands down the best duel of the whole series machines versus warriors callbacks from the main series like with time machine keith tries to cheat as always before learning that dual disks have anti-cheat built into them now and heck this is even the reveal of the wicked eraser which is the third and final god card meant to counter slifer it's the perfect blend between fan service high stakes awesome art and a surprisingly touching finale considering how much of a little crap joey's been this whole series and then of course we have the grand finale 150 pages of yugi vs yaakov we get the first debut of iconic monsters like beast king barbaros but otherwise it's your standard no you no you no you no you affair i was curious to see who yugi would use to defeat the evil gods and the answer is a powered up version of obelisk now called obelisk the progenitor this combo destroys the evil leaving the rest of the duel to be a lower stakes friendly fight and who better to end the fan service manga than the fan service waifu herself dark magician girl the manga ends like one page after this battle is over taya is freed kaiba corpus freed the power of friendship wins once more i'm glad i didn't erase those smiles so that's yu-gi-oh-r for you i guess it isn't too surprising that aris becomes somewhat of a forgotten piece of yu-gi-oh media nothing too important happens and it's about 95 inconsequential card games all the way down i'd say its biggest weaknesses by far are pacing and variety by trying to cram over 15 unique new villains into the story at once there's just too many mouths to feed and not enough pages i think if they cut this villain total down by half we would have had space for longer duels a more compelling narrative and maybe even some more returning characters the biggest strength of yugioh r by far is its art ito's work here is amazing giving a great mix of inspired creature designs and dozens of new themes and hundreds of new attack poses there's just something so nostalgic about reading through old black and white yugioh manga especially one that comes with packed in promo cards it reminds me of reading shonen jump magazine as a kid sometimes you just want a shot of nostalgia and yu-gi-oh-r definitely does deliver on that akira ido ended up using r as a launching point for his own career eventually becoming a co-founder for the card game media franchise card fight vanguard that franchise is a little beyond my time but hey i've dug myself deep enough into the world of card games media maybe i'll check it out someday in the meantime thank you for watching today's manga review recap thing i love reading through old manga and every time you guys watch one of these videos it just gives me an excuse to do it some more have a good one and i'll see you guys next time with more card games [Music]
