What Is Truth? :: Truth Or Trend? Pt. 1 | Pastor Steve Smothermon

listen we're starting a new series today and we titled it truth or trend and so the the title of this message in the series is what is truth now let me say this beforehand my goal is never to offend anybody i mean i don't wake up in the morning think let me see how many people i can offend today but this is that type of message where we um we're going to be provoked to do good things we're going to be challenged because really some of the things that people believe are trends not truth we're going to define truth to find trends and then get into some of them according to the word of god so trends beliefs and ideas come and go and everyone inside and outside the church is influenced by them to some degree as follows of christ we should look to the bible first second middle last we should look to the scriptures not culture for direction and purpose this series explores how god instructs us to be set apart non-conformist transformed by the word of god john 18 37-38 you are a king then said pilate jesus answered you say that i am a king in fact the reason i was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth everybody say truth okay and then he goes on to say everyone say everyone because i want to make sure everyone gets everyone on the side of truth listens to me what is truth retorted pilate but think about jesus words everyone on the side of truth listens to me if you're not on the side of truth if you're not listening to christ to jesus of the word you're not on the side of truth you're on the side of trends and fads and what's culturally popular you know even our supreme court of the united states i was dealing you know we were dealing in federal court and i said why hasn't the supreme court taking this up and they said because it's not popularly yet these guys are supposed to honor the constitution the law of the land but yet even they are influenced by what's popular or not popular their trend they're they're in they're into trends instead of what the constitution actually says that's why our whole system is getting jacked up but jesus said everyone on the side of truth listens to me if you're not listening to the word of god then you're not on the side of truth and the truth is he is true later on i'll read but he says i am the way the truth and the life so he is true and so everyone on the side of truth listens to jesus today the same attitude pilate had with jesus concerning truth is the same that people have today what is truth it's the same question people don't change we just live in this time but pilate what is truth and to so many people that's a big question what is true because your truth may not be my truth and my truth may not be your truth but when we come as believers to the word of god we know that this is the truth it's all inspired by god himself and so some people say it's a trendy it's trendy to say well it's written by man sure everything in here is done this building was built by a man but i believe god wanted it i mean god uses man on the earth yesterday my wife and i were in our our our yard of rocks pulling weeds and i'm thinking well you know why do we got to do that this just just why doesn't god just do that because he uses man to get things done on the earth and so if those weeds were going to get pulled we were going to pull them but so many people have different thoughts on god and what he should do and what he shouldn't do this is the truth if you if you call yourself a christian and don't believe in this whole bible then you cannot truly be a christian see and that goes against oh people are like oh like who are you to say that because truth affects you it's trendy to discount the bible to live any way you want in our world it is not uncommon to deny the existence of truth period if we believe in absolute truth we will listen to jesus that's what he said everybody on the side of truth listens to me but how many people ignore god ignore christ ignore the word of god and this attitude about truth has made its way into the church in the form of different trends as well as outright not believing the bible is the word of god they take polls most people don't believe this is anything but a book even in the church say well i believe in the bible do you do it if you're not doing it you really don't believe it either because if you really believe it's god's word then why are we doing i mean god said i should be doing it but i don't know how many people say well i believe in the bible i believe the bible don't tell me i don't believe in bible but if you're not doing it you don't really believe in it if you believe in the truth you listen to jesus but he just doesn't want you to listen he wants you to be a doer of the word a trend is any form of collective behavior that develops within a culture a generation or social group in which a group of people follow and impulse for a short period trends are objects or behaviors that achieve short-lived popularity but fade away we see them all the time we see fads all the time and now i'm a little older i've seen a bunch of them when i was younger i wore jeans and flip-flops they were called thongs in that day which is crazy but see that was coming now it's like what you what do you what what do you put on your feet and then for a man why do you have a thong you know but in my day if you remember that's what they were called until i went in the store with my kids one day and i yell in the store hey i found the thongs are over here and my kids were mortified they were like dad what did you just say i said they're right there's a whole bunch of them and then they said dad those are called thongs those are called flip-flops i'm like oh my gosh but just so some of you know that one day how many all know what i'm talking about they yeah they weren't called flip-flops but you can't say that today so i wore jeans flip-flops t-shirts overalls with no shirt long hair and then if i really got dressed up at all i wore hip huggers anybody remember those are with bell bottoms so they would be tight here and then there'd be a party somewhere down there'd be and we thought we looked cool it was a trend and now i i my wife and i was watching tv and say hey they have bell bottoms on and someone said they're coming back i'm like no no but it's a trend trends come and go the truth is consistent and never changes and that's what god is trying to get us to see is you got to believe the truth trends are temporary truth is timeless trends change the truth never changes truth is consistent the same everybody say the same the same for all time all people in all places it doesn't change for anybody and this is extremely important really a baseline going forward in this series and in this message it doesn't change and when you say you love jesus that sounds kind of a little mushy to me it always has do you love the lord do you love the lord you love the lord and jesus never made it mushy he said you love me yeah then do what i ask there's no mushiness in that so let me let me explain like this for some of the dudes in here when you say you love the lord you what you're saying is i honor i respect and i revere him and i listen to him because i am of the truth that's what that's what loving god is it's not this mushiness huggy touchy feely stuff it's about honor and respect and reverence and so i want to say it this way i heard someone sent me this and i i kind of wrote down the best way i could remember it you know the people didn't pick barabbas over jesus because they loved barabbas bravos was a murderer and a thief so why would they pick him over jesus because they hated the truth they didn't pick bravos because we love barabbas we love rabbits he's a thief and a murderer probably still from the ones getting them out they picked him because they hated the truth and today people hate truth because when you have and believe in absolute truth they can't make you afraid they can't intimidate you or shame you into following falling in line with what they want in our world it is trendy to make decisions based on your feelings which i have said and spoken feelings are not facts or your experiences but that's not my experience well that's not is that your experience no it's not my experience or what is normal and what is accepted because it's not normal when we go into this message it's not going to be trendy or feel normal to you but it doesn't change the truth of what god wants us to do and be you know for some people normal is when you walk into your home you take off your shoes that's normal well that's not normal for me people have come to my house and said do we need to take off our shoes i'm like well if you want i mean okay enjoy yourself and then i've been in people's homes and they say hey before would you would you mind taking off your shoes and i don't mind it's their rules it's but it's not normal for me we didn't grow up that way we grew up taking our nasty shoes in our house and going everywhere with them but normal see if you can't you can't you can't live by what's normal because normal changes home to home place to place culture to culture there's got to be something higher than all that that never changes and there is it's called the truth the word of god it never changes so feelings experiences what is normal that is not how truth works because all these are subject to change how i feel one day about something may change tomorrow our experiences are different what seems normal to one may not be normal for another and the bible teaches us that jesus is the same yesterday today and forever what does that mean i never change i'm consistent the truth never changes never changes that's why we can count on it that's why there's peace in our hearts when we honoring the word that it never changed that's what jesus was saying i never change that jesus is the same yesterday and every ever he's saying my word my the truth never changes see there is truth and there are trends unfortunately the trends often overshadow the truth today in our culture even in the church go to john if you have a bible if you don't you can follow along on screen if you have it on your phone that's great too john chapter 1. let me read a few verses to you john chapter 1 verses 1-5 jesus is the word and the word is truth in the beginning the word already existed the word was with god and the word was god he existed in the beginning with god god created everything through him and nothing was created except through him the word gave life to everything that was created and his life brought light to everyone and the light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it why because it's eternal that's why jesus said i'm the same yesterday and forever because he was with god he is the word and he was with god and and through him all things were created that's why he can say i am the same yesterday today and forever because i don't change all the other trends change from day to day time to time culture to culture but the word of god transcends all of that and everyone on the side of truth listens to jesus so the question would be whose side are you on when absolute truth is removed absurdity rules the day it's absurd to think a man can become a woman or a woman can become a man it's absurd to me it's absurd that men would dress like women when the bible specifically says to a man do not dress like a woman isn't it funny that everything god says don't do we do and the church even calls it normal or acceptable or okay did they come against it now all sudden you're controversial we'll get into that in a moment too everyone on the side of truth listens to me what is jesus he's the word and god made sure the word was written down for us so we could learn it and do it the most controversial man who ever walked the earth you wanna know his name his name is jesus another controversial man that walked was paul paul was beaten for the truth for speaking the truth he was left for dead for speaking the truth he was stranded for speaking the truth because the truth in and of itself is controversial so let me say it this way if you are looking for a church that is not controversial this isn't it because it gets old listen to people no one ever says anything bad about my church i know the media never comes that i know because you have to believe something stand for something and then it becomes it becomes what to the lost world controversial so we're controversial people say all the time to me well all he does is talk about politics everything i talk about is not politics but everything everybody hears is political because if i talk about abortion homosexuality that's political why are you talking about those things because it's in the bible because the truth tells me i should it doesn't matter what i say it's political if i say the governor's evil that's political that's not political that's biblical you say what do you mean it is biblical for men of god women of god to call out the sinners and the sinful leaders those who are against god but oh it's so political i i really it it doesn't matter what i say when we fought the homosexual thing that people say why are you so political i thought it was moral i thought it was about morality if i was running for an office now that would be political it doesn't matter what you say when they don't like you or you're controversial they always try to put you in a corner so people don't listen and you cannot put baby in a corner where these thoughts come from man i don't know it just was right there like tell him don't do it no no if you call yourself a believer and there is no evidence of being a believer in your life what are you let me say it again it's rhetorical but you can answer for yourself if you call yourself a christian and there is no evidence in your life of being a christian then what are you see truth and true teachers are controversial that's why jesus was the most controversial man that walked the earth and he went after the religious folks the pharisees and the sadducees he went after those people that should have been listening to him but they didn't love the truth they loved the trends and the culture and their popularity and their power and their money more than they loved god so they went up the truth john 14 6 says jesus told him i am the way the truth and the life no one can come to the father except through me so all these people say oh god and i we got our own relationship no you don't there's only one way to get to god that's through jesus and if you are of the truth you listen to jesus you listen to him and there is no such thing as ever well i got my own deal with god well it's the same deal we all have we hear and we do there is no other deal but that's trendy it sounds great sounds so spiritual yeah mean god we're just like we're close man you know we so think about what he said on the way he's the way to god but he's also the way he you follow his way he's the truth and the life and everyone who is of the truth listens to him john 8 32 and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free the best translation that is you'll know the truth and the truth you know and what is the truth i know that which i'm willing to do will set me free john 17 17 make them holy by your truth set apart you're different teach them your word which is truth truth liberates the application of truth liberates but it only liberates if you believe it and apply it to your life when you do it that's when it liberates and you don't know something until you're really really willing to do it but don't tell me i know all the bible then why are you in the mess you're on why aren't you working through it why isn't it getting better you don't know it you've read it like a history book but you don't know it because you're not doing it and remember those who are of the truth listen to jesus and he said if you love me you keep my commandments my word he didn't make it mushy at all because i feel like i so love jesus yeah but tomorrow you can feel like you don't wake up a little sick wake up a little tired wake up and get bad news and those feelings go poop right away feelings are not facts but it's still popular today i just i just feel this way gosh i can't tell you how many times i've heard that i said well the bible doesn't say that but i feel that way well and you don't want to say this but it doesn't matter how you feel it matters what is written and what is truth well you mean my feelings don't count with god i don't think feelings are going to get you to heaven well i felt like i was saved and jesus comes back and you find out you're not see you can't you can't count on them they change from moment to moment circumstances from circumstance truth is exclusive by the way and jesus is the exclusive way to god by definition truth is absolute and exclusive now see the words inclusive and exclusive they bring up all kinds of things and people some of you will wince that like what do you mean it's exclusive isn't it for everybody it is but there's only one way to the father that's pretty exclusive so why do we have such a hard time in our culture saying what i believe is right and what you're believing is wrong why do we find that so difficult well for some of us it is because we we think who am i to tell someone that what they believe is wrong someone's belief is wrong but why do we have a hard time doing it now when i say that i'm not talking about being mean-spirited screaming yelling telling me you you turn or you're going to burn you sinner you're going to hell i'm not talking about that it's the goodness of god that leads people to repentance it's it's being kind and gracious but saying hey dude what you what you're saying is not biblical but i feel like my experience was yeah but it doesn't matter it matters what's written there's two answers here why it's difficult because it is not trendy or popular to do so is one of them because my truth is not your truth and why why why who are you to tell me i'm wrong and then we say to ourselves who am i to tell someone they're wrong listen when jehovah witnesses knock on my door and they don't do it very often they're just outmanned and outgunned and i've looked at him and say you don't believe that right and then you start talking about the bible to them and they only know certain scriptures that they've been told they don't know the whole bible so they end up walking away and then you say well how do you know you're right how do you know this is right because every other religion compares itself to this one we never th the original the right never compare down down downward and all those things say we're like christianity we're like christians we're like those it's similar to the bible so you become a mormon they take the bible out of your hands excuse me they take the bible out of your hands and say well we're not going to read this right now we're going to read the book of mormon which is not the inherent word of god the truth i'm not trying to be mean i want to get them saved but here's another trendy thing where they're good people that's one of the biggest well they're good people surely god wouldn't send good people to hell god would let good people go to hell all day long and probably does and isn't it funny that we we use that terminology and yet jesus spoke to it directly when the rich young ruler came up to him and said hey good master he stopped him before he could say anything else he stopped him and say hey there's none good but one and that's god don't call me good but yet in our culture today it's trendy even in the church to call good people they're good people compared to what compared to what you think is good but they could the goodness all the goodness in this room that we could muster doesn't compare to one incidency piece of god's righteousness there's no comparison and so i've never seen nike or under armour comparing itself to spalding and i've never seen believers true believers compare themselves to anything i i would never compare us to buddha nirvana om should have bought a honda [Music] meditation never because there's no comparison and jesus is the only way and just because something's not popular just because something is popular doesn't make it right good people nice people sweet people generous people they don't go to heaven save people go to heaven and there can be some safe people that are a little ornery a little messed up but man if they're purpose and to do what god said they're going to go to heaven that's what the bible teaches that's truth walter martin said stated truth by definition is exclusive if truth were all inclusive nothing would be false george orwell said it this way in a time of universal deceit which we live in telling the truth is a revolutionary act josh mcdowell put it this way truth is objective because god exists outside of ourselves it is universal because god is above all it is constant because god is eternal absolute truth is absolute because it originates from the original augustine said it this way all human beings by nature desire to know the truth what are we all seeking the truth well the truth is jesus is the only way the truth and the life you can't have a relationship with god the father the creator of heaven and earth unless you go through jesus that's exclusive now here's the thing though christianity is probably the only mostly inclusive faith there is you say how can you say both because we accept people the way they are you come to christ just like you are lost unsaved he saved a wretch like me a wretch that's how we come to christ with all of our mess-ups and hiccups and problems so in that way we're the most inclusive faith of all but we're very exclusionary when it comes to the truth there's only one way to god and that's through jesus christ if you can come any way you want you can come to church here as long as you act right don't act what the people say don't act a fool but there's there's you're subject to change if you ask jesus to be lord of your life but see just what i said is so controversial today in our society in fact people are getting kicked off social media because social media doesn't want you to hear the whole truth if you're a trendy person person feelings are emphasized over facts personal experiences feelings and opinions tend to be valued above truth as the bible ceases to be viewed as god's definitive word what a person feels to be true becomes the ultimate authority for faith and practice not what is actually true things you might hear this is what people say that bible verse that he read doesn't resonate with me what in other words i don't feel it whether you if if you're on the side of truth you listen to jesus when you live by your feelings without that one i don't i don't like that scripture that's what i say i don't like that one so i'm not going to do that one i don't i don't agree with that well here's one that's really controversial i thought homosexuality was a sin until i met and befriended one and then one of my family members is one and then somehow it's no longer a sin it's trendy to say what things are sins and not sins i mean they've been sins for thousands and thousands years but in our culture they're no longer sins and here's another one i i spoke to it earlier i just can't believe god would send good people to hell those are trendy thoughts and the bible teaches us immorality is sin and if you don't repent of it you won't go to heaven i'm going to read it to you just so people aren't taking just hearing me spat off but i'll read i'm going to read the truth are you ready first corinthians chapter 6 verses 9 through 11. i want everybody to pay close attention to this because everyone on the side of truth listens to jesus he is the word he was in the beginning he hasn't changed he's still the word don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of god don't fool yourselves those who indulge in sexual sin now really the better word is practice this is something you're living in and unwilling to repent of it's not something you do one time and then you think oh my gosh i'm lost forever it's a practice of it with an unwilling heart or an unwillingness to repent and purpose to get it right those who indulge in sexual sin or worship idols or commit adultery or are male prostitutes or practice homosexuality or are thieves or greedy people or drunkards or are abusive or cheap people none of these will inherit the kingdom of god how many of these will not inherit the kingdom of god none some of you were once like that how many i would say you were once like some of this come on yeah but here's the kicker some of you were once like that but you were cleansed you were made holy you were made right with god by calling on the name of the lord jesus christ and by the spirit of our god so if i got up in there said greedy people don't go to heaven no one would buck me and so let me define greediness for you greediness is when you don't honor god with what he's put in your hand that's like just stab me man think about it god's put in your hand well you define greedy then we're greedy when we don't honor god with what he's put in our hands the tithe offerings we're greedy greedy people won't go to heaven okay thieves won't go to heaven got it cheats won't go to heaven this is people who are practicing they live this way unrepentant they don't recognize it as wrong sexual sin as long as we salute this one now here's what becomes controversial homosexuals unless they repent of their sin they will not inherit the kingdom of god so let me ask you that isis what is worse enabling sin and then they go to hell or standing up and saying this is what the bible teaches this is the truth and man you can repent of that because here's what's happened with the homosexual movement for a long time they were trying to find a gene i think it's called the geno study they were trying to find a gene millions and millions of dollars to find a gene that says this is why we're this way and they found none then they came to this conclusion god made me this way which is really blasphemy god made me this way so if god made me this way i can't change okay now let's go back to the truth none of these will inherit the kingdom of god and some of you are like that but you were cleansed in other words you can change you were made holy you were made right with god by calling on the name of the lord jesus he's saying of all these people they can change if they believe and on the side of truth but yet what the homosexual community says is i cannot change because god made me this way this is who i am no this is what the world has said you are this is what the devil has made you believe you are god says you can be redeemed and set free from that but oh no that's controversial how dare you speak of that i've been accosted out in that forward from people i can't believe you put my son in the same category as liars and thieves and drunks and i had to look at this woman i said i didn't do that i read the scriptures and after this long discussions this is what she finally said well i really don't know the bible i i and i wasn't being mean to her it's just it's just that's how people that they're they don't they want truth but then they really don't want truth if i was to say to you if you're drunkard in here drug addict and you don't repent you won't inherit the kingdom of god how controversial is that no one cares everybody would agree like yeah dude you need to get right you need to quit drinking you need to quit drugging if i said to people listen it is not healthy for you go out and party and go to bars and have sex with everybody that you meet some people say yeah that's okay and if you do that you're not going to heaven most people say yeah that sounds right but let's talk about the most propagandized lifestyle in america and the world and now somehow god is wrong the preacher's wrong the church is wrong everybody's wrong because here's what they say but they're good people now let's go back to what jesus said there's only one good and that's god they're sinners lost and they can be saved so here's the inclusiveness of the church if you're of any kind of lifestyle if you're a drunkard you can get right with god here you're a drug out you get right with god here you're homosexual you can get right with god here if you're if you're in sexual sin you can get right with god here in other words folks if you're greedy you can get right with god here if you're a thief stop stealing if you're cheat quit cheating i mean how many y'all love a good cheater how many y'all have a really nice thief well he stole all my stuff but he was nice about it i mean he actually asked me do you mind if i take this i'm gonna take it anyway but it's gonna be kind but get to this one subject and oh boy here we go another trend though that i'm going to deal with on the midweek is to believe in this term social justice and critical race theory i've never dealt with it but i'm going to tuesday and wednesday and and i because i think we got there is justice we need justice but there's been justice that god gives and what their term social justice which is marxism we're going to deal with that because that's what they're trying to teach your kids in school and we'll deal with that but i want to end with this jesus is the exclusive way there is no other way to god you can lie to yourself you can listen to people who don't know romans 10 13 says for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved there's one lord and only one and his name is jesus there is no other way to heaven it's very exclusive to get born again there's only one way to god you cannot know god without knowing jesus or going through jesus and you know jesus by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth his lordship in other words you give him permission to come live in your life but he only comes by invitation he doesn't come forcing his way in well if god wants me saved i'll just get saved not true god wants everybody saved he gave his son for a lost world for god so loved the world that he gave he didn't say i only gave it for part of the people or some it's for everybody but then jesus made it very clear it's so sad only a few will find the way to do it his way it's trendy to say i'll just do it my way i'll get to know god the way i want to get to know god i don't need to go to church folks that's a lie sounds so spiritual though oh just me and god i go up the mountains in worship i'm in nature with god it sounds well that sounds ridiculous to me but some people think this sounds so spiritual like really how often do you go up in the mountains and turn on your worship and get your worship on i mean really and yet god says we're together together god said we got to serve one another so much for that i'm going to do it my way what was the song i'll do it my way well that's not a good thing when it comes to christ you can do it your way and end up in a bad place and i don't want anybody end up there you do it god's way and you end up in a great place it's your choice your call the truth never changes not for you or me or anyone else if we sin we have to repent it doesn't matter what sin it is because if we continue to practice certain things without repentance then the bible says you won't inherit the kingdom of god you won't inherit heaven father in jesus name i thank you for being here thank you for teaching us all thank you for helping us learn your word i thank you father you're making us all think i thank you father this word is challenging the truth is controversial in and of itself for god it sets us free once we believe it once we buy into it and and we and everyone on the side of truth listens to jesus we listen to him we're on the side of truth god teach us truth your word is truth teach us the way teach us the truth and let us experience the life that you came to give each and every one of us eternal life father in jesus name i thank you for being with us today i thank you for helping people [Music] thank you for opening our eyes that we'll see the truth and that truth that we know that we act on that we do will set us free thank you father for loving us enough to tell us the truth and never change it not for anybody that keeps us safe with every head bowed online or in here and you say pastor would you pray with me i've walked with god but i've walked away i want to come home oh you say pastor would you pray with me i've never really given god permission to my life i've never invited him in i just figured i was good with god because i said i believed in god but the bible says even the devils believed and trembled and you know what the difference is they weren't doers they weren't on the side of truth they didn't want to get to know the truth in other words learn it and do it and if you're ready to come home or you're ready to ask jesus to be lord of your life and submit your will to god so you can know the only true god there's only one god and that's the father of our lord jesus christ and there's only one way to him and that's through jesus christ no other way if that's you in the powerful powerful name of jesus right where you see that i'm asking you to do something it's so significant but yet so simple it's so meaningful but yet it's easy to do [Music] if you're ready to ask jesus be lord of your life and you're ready to say i don't care what anybody else thinks i want god in my life for jesus i'm willing to confess you before man so you can confess me for my father in heaven in other words you don't care what anybody thinks i just want god in my life if that's you and you're ready i'm going to actually do one simple thing and it's it's very easy so if that's you in jesus name if you're ready without any hesitation and you say pastor including your prayer right now in jesus name would you just lift your hand is there anybody in you god bless you anybody else god bless you i see your hand man thank you so much god loves people guys he truly does he's for you not against you the truth is meant to liberate lies and deception keep us in bondage to sin and the ultimate price of sin is hell god wants everybody to go to heaven one last time i'm a look around everybody else father in the powerful name of jesus i thank you for each hand that was raised i thank you god that you know them personally thank you so much god bless you you know them personally you know everything about them and for every person that lifted their hand for the people they represent the lives that they have influence over or they know god i thank you for saving them today i thank you for caring enough to give us the truth and people will be become freer and freer as they get to know the truth and act on it it's a journey it's a process that's for sure but god it's well worth it to be liberated and free in jesus name if you lifted your hand i want you to pray this prayer live with me right where you're seated i want everybody in here that's right with god to pray and if you're online i want you to pray it out loud the bible says we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth we don't think it we confess it would you pray this prayer live with me would you pray father i choose to believe in jesus and i believe he is the way
