[Music] the first film in denis vale news two-part adaptation of frank herbert's dune is in production and so far is still planned for its december 18 2020 premiere date but considering the fluid state of theater going and summer movies that continue to be pushed back things could still change however as we eagerly await any news or hint of a trailer i'd like to continue to speculate about what we might see in denis vale news turn at adapting this beloved sci-fi novel one aspect of dune that i am particularly interested to see villeneuve's interpretation of is the bunny gesture it's special form of movement known as the weirding way in this video i'll talk about what this form of martial arts is the different ways it has been portrayed in previous adaptations and what we might see in the upcoming film [Music] the bene gesseret are the most formidable warriors in the universe yet they choose to keep the full breadth of their abilities secret so as not to invite suspicion and threats that would hinder their plans for humanity to outsiders they exist to serve the empire's interests and this suits them just fine as they secretly manipulate the rich and powerful to achieve their goals because of the mystery surrounding their order their abilities are often viewed as magical in nature but in reality the heart of a bene jesuit's power is exercising supreme control of oneself all members of the vinnie jesuit are trained in the art known as pranabendu through years of intense physical and psychological conditioning they come to develop supreme muscle and nerve control the idea behind it being that if you could fully control yourself or truly know yourself then you have the key to control your reality and ultimately to control the universe training opens the door to many abilities including their unique form of movement that others refer to as the weirding way the term weirding is an idiom that refers to one who partakes in the mystical or witchcraft and thus shows how little is understood about their order but those misconceptions have their advantages also a bene gesture at acolyte usually begins her training within the first year of her life and it is a long and tense process to achieve ultimate self-discipline and complete mastery of oneself physically emotionally and mentally this training makes the benejesterate a formidable force capable of performing superhuman feats of strength speed and agility they can maneuver around an opponent with lightning speed and strike with incredible power and precision their movements are so fast that to their opponent and any bystanders it appears as if they are teleporting the mental component of training is just as vital as the physical the bene gesture its first axiom is my mind controls my reality by altering one's perception of space and time cause and effect they could bypass the laws of physics if you imagine yourself at a location to gain the upper hand on an enemy you would arrive there willing it into fruition there are certain limitations to this form of combat the weirding way is most effective within close quarters and over short distances and so the bene jesuit are quite adept in hand-to-hand combat maneuvers and knife and whip techniques there is definitely a lot to this unique fighting style of frank herbert's creation and in the past it has presented some challenges to depict on screen limitations in technology time and budget constraints no doubt played a factor david lynch in his 1984 film decided to go a different direction deeming the martial arts of the benny jesuit unworkable on film and he reportedly didn't want to see kung fu on sand dunes i have to admit that sounds epic to me but it seems the challenges of bringing this incredibly complex story to the big screen became too great and sacrifices had to be made so david lynch departed from the source material and presented a different concept for the weirding way instead of a unique form of movement it was changed to be a sort of sonic weaponry known as the weirding module in which certain sounds or words would trigger the device's attack beam i admit this concept is intriguing however it diminishes some really important aspects of frank herbert's story especially in regards to the bene jesuit the fremen lady jessica and her son paula tradies lady jessica's training as a member of the bene jesterate was intense and thorough since it was integral to the sisterhood's plans she went on to teach her son the weirding way and this plays a significant part in their survival in the harsh desert world of arrakis the sci-fi channel original mini-series that came out in the year 2000 presented a more accurate depiction of the weirding way however it was shown in a somewhat limited fashion though i do feel they did the best they could with the budget they had and it is at least for the most part faithful to the source there is somewhat of a teleportation-like effect depicted in this version through blurred movements yet the intricacies of this fighting style and the cheaper effects couldn't quite do it justice one of the reasons i am excited for the new adaptation of dune is that the issues that seem to hinder these previous adaptations don't appear to be a major factor this time around decades later we have the technology the film has a major blockbuster budget and a filmmaker whose dream it's been to adapt this amazing book i'm sure we will get a stunning depiction of this epic fighting style but i also hope to see what all is involved in this form of combat to give the audience a better understanding of the concept behind this form of martial arts we might see events play out from the perspective of the one trained in this art as well as from the opponents or bystanders some have speculated it could look somewhat like the technique of robert downey jr sherlock holmes where time seems to slow dramatically as he analyzes the situation and maps out his attack in a sense it would be very interesting to see the individual's perception of reality in this form of combat this mixed with the style of the matrix i have to admit sounds really cool i guess i would rather see an attempt at kung fu in the sand dunes show me considering it took a year of work just to design the sandworms of arrakis i have confidence cephel neuf has given this particular aspect of the story a great deal of thought and care and i look forward to seeing his vision of frank herbert's weirding way i hope you enjoyed this video give it a thumbs up if you did and be sure to subscribe for more dune and other sci-fi fantasy content and let me know in the comments what you're hoping to see of the weirding way in this new adaptation and if you have any theories about what it can look like thank you all so much for your support and as always have a very nerdy day [Music] you
