What Is the Jezebel Spirit? Baal, 'Demonic Powers,' and Witchcraft

well Dr Brown as always you have really interesting commentary on this most recent controversy to rock the church the Mark Driscoll Jezebel controversy and you know I want to get into not so much the controversy itself but I do have a couple of questions for you but mainly Jezebel because the Jezebel spirit was one of the things that came up in this story with Mark Driscoll mentioning that Jezebel spirit and you wrote a book a couple of years back called Jezebel's war with America the plot to destroy our country and what we can do to turn the tide so let's start with this general question for those who don't know who was Jezebel so Jezebel is arguably the most wicked woman in the Bible she was a Phoenician princess and an Ardent worshipper of Baal Baal she married King Ahab and together they helped bring Israel down into deep idolatry and of course she had a great battle with the Prophet Elijah so she's associated with idolatry she is associated with being seductive with with witchcraft and the thing that people often refer to when they think of Jezebel and Ahab or they'll say he's kind of an Ahab meaning that she was seemed to be very domineering that she was the one that was guiding and driving some of the wickedness that took place and that he didn't sufficiently resist it just went along with it and when we refer to Jezebel Spirit the the reason that we come up with the idea is that she's mentioned again in the New Testament in the Book of Revelation and Jesus says to the church in thara you you tolerate that woman uh called Jezebel who claims to be a prophetess was it actually her name Jezebel or was that just the name given because she led people into sexual immorality and worship of Idols so similar to The Jezebel in the Old Testament so when we refer to a a jeze El's Spirit what we mean is the same demonic powers that operated through her seductive leading into idolatry emasculating etc those same demonic Powers operating today and that's what Jezebel's war with America was about to say just just look at this look at these things that are happening from radical feminism to abortion because in the ancient world Idols are often associated with child sacrifice uh to porn and sedu to the emasculating of men Etc put these things together it's jezebell yeah and you know looking at America as you said and and that's what you did in that book you know ju deposing who she was and and the spirits working through her and what we're seeing happen today were you shocked to see Jezebel sort of thrown out in the midst of this most recent you know conversation with Mark Driscoll you know or were you not shocked I mean you were one of the first people to sort of respond to it and and do a write up on it giving your perspective actually I didn't even pay much attention to that part of it I haven't followed Mark Driscoll's Ministry or restoration or what he had written or said about it it was more the larger controversy of the performance that was at the Men's Conference and then how it was handled and I just had so many different people asking me about it including leaders the the day everything surfaced I thought I should reply to it so the the biggest controversies that I looked at were the performance itself and then how it was handled by Mark Driscoll and then by Pastor John Liddell who whom I I don't know either you know only' heard good things about it within the Assemblies of God but how it was handled what was going on what we could learn from it and to me that was the big thing what are the edifying takeaways I don't want to get caught up in the gossip column here but what what can what's our righteous response yeah no absolutely and and I love that we're getting a chance to sort of talk about the Jezebel piece because again when something gets thrown out there and it becomes a big I mean there's so many different pieces to this story that was one that I thought oh this is interesting we don't you know in certain circles Jezebel has talked about and obviously people who have read scripture will know who she is but really understanding that spiritual nature of it what do you say to those who will sort of point to people who are talking about Jezebel and they'll say oh there's no Jezebel spirit that's you know they they'll sort of dismiss because some people you know have a very sort of fervent ideology around what they think that Jezebel spirit looks like others sort of rejected but what do you say to those who would sort of dismiss the idea of talking about a Jezebel spirit as being problematic today well on the one hand we have to be careful because you'll have maybe in a church you've got a woman who's very strong and and and full of the spirit and forceful and well she's a jezebel you know and and we have somebody we don't like and they're a jezebel so we have to be really careful about throwing that around but for sure a woman that Wicked in the Bible and who had that much power and who was so intimidating was certainly demonized and when we see those same spiritual characteristics at work especially if we've ever encountered them I mean I had a few times over my life where there was no question that this was a confrontation with a Jezebel spirit so whether it's a principality whether it's just demons working together all we're saying is the same characteristics this thing that comes in an emasculating way to cut you down the thing that comes to intimidate the thing that comes with a certain seduction whatever it is that that when you see these things working together and there's a powerful demonic presence or I encountered it in India only to find out that the place where we were going the the Goddess that was worship was the the most powerful demonic deity in the entire state that where we were in India and had all these bizarre character istics that that once a year that the male followers of this so-called deity kanakadurga would dress up as women that the statue of kanakadurga there she she's she's holding the hand in her hand that the head of the giant that she conquered I'm thinking boy I'm experiencing this spiritually then finding out these details and now as the years gone on Kiker Durga has become the champion of the transgender movement in India so even just the attack on fundamental male female distinctions so there is a demonic realm that's real There Are Spiritual Beings that have certain characteristics and activities we see that in the New Testament you know a deaf and dumb spirit so a spirit that would make someone deaf and dumb so we're just identifying where's the spiritual warfare we're saying hey hey look you can call it what you want to call it but it's demonic it's powerful and it has these characteristics and we need to be aware when these things are going on well and it is interesting too that parallel between what Jezebel was doing to Israel right in Ahab and what we see happening in America today the spiritual elements of what is happening a lot of times we forget Ephesians 6 we assume everything happening before us is material it's a fight between people when we're told in Scripture that that is not the case and so when you look at her story it's it's really a cautionary tal as you write about you know um in the book now I do want to ask you one question about this Mark Driscoll controversy when it comes to the the church right and I'm saying you know Big C church when these sorts of events are going on one of the questions that has come up and it's been focused a little bit less on which is interesting you know does the church need to have these big monster truck you know rallies as part of these events you know the sword swallowers I mean this was actually I'm not going to lie to me and a lot of people were like what's wrong with you you haven't been around this and I and I honestly haven't been I've gone to smaller churches I've mostly my whole life I've never gone to a Men's Conference where there was a monster truck so it was interesting to me that this was such a common practice at so many men's conferences I'm curious you spiritually what you think about that is that stuff needed is it not let me make a very direct statement first and then a qualifier after the direct statement is when the fire of God is falling you don't need any of that when God is moving and Jesus is being exalted and people are being set free you could have someone play accordion uh wearing a jacket and tie preaching out of a King James Bible and people from every age in background would come flocking if the sick were being healed and and people were being set free I'm an eyewitness to it in the Browns were Revival people came from over 130 Nations they would they would line up outside the building beginning at 6: in the morning for the doors open at 6:00 at night for the service to start at 7 at night and it was a gospel get the the sin out of your life message it was a repentance message but people were encountering God and being changed Leonard Raven Hill used to say you don't have to advertise a fire and when John Wesley was asked how he drew the crowds reportedly he said I set myself on fire and the people come to watch me burn when God really moves you don't need any of that stuff and you won't have any of that stuff and there's no reason to get people all worked up in the flesh if the goal is now to bring them into things of the spirit and I've I've spoken at some of the finest mega churches around the world and never encountered anything like that so that's that is my fundamental statement I want to say one other thing though there are settings you think of a Billy Graham rally many years ago right and they would have here's a famous gospel singer here's an actor who's a Christian he's going to testify right you had the power team years ago these these muscle guys and they do these Feats of Strength and then share the gospel right so these were just ways especially bringing guys in together and and if your if your purpose is Outreach and bringing in a crowd so you got some baseball player who's a Believer who's going to testify or you GNA do some seminar you know what I don't know some country thing with fishing and now afterwards that comedians Christian comedians that's another one you know a lot of comedians come into church yes so I understand if this was an Outreach event as well and hey it's a lot of fun we're going to do XYZ and and then we're g to have some powerful gospel meetings I'm not sitting here to condemn or to say it's it's wron hearted or carnal in general without a doubt though they needed to have vetted what they were doing and and not have this this gentleman in we pray that he'll really come to know the Lord that's number one number two you need to have the sense that there's certain things that are appropriate and certain things that aren't appropriate in public settings and it's one thing to say we're bringing a tank in and doing oh okay I'm I'm not condemning that I don't think it's necessary when God is moving but fine Outreach bringing people in having fun with the guys you know maybe like Hey we're having a break at a big volleyball tournament in the middle then we'll come back for meting all right so it's men's Retreat fine whatever but there are things that are appropriate things that aren't appropriate and then the gentleman involved the the if you used to be a male go- go dancer in in gay nightclubs and other things and taking off most of your clothes and dancing sensually well if you do come to Faith the one thing you're not going to do is take your shirt off and do some performance like that and use a poll so I mean obviously he needs to come to the Lord and be born again that's what we should pray for but that is just so out of line and and thankfully the pastor apologized just never should have happened and is grieved over the division so let's move on from there and to me the big thing is to say okay we just need God we need God to come and move and when we encounter him everything changes and we won't even the monster truck could be sitting outside we'll never drive it in because people will be on their faces weeping and repenting we won't even care yeah that all right so final question for you um and I always love getting your responses on these things and this is a positive one you know watching the past year and a half looking at the Asbury outpouring SL Revival depending on who you're talking to and all these other events that we've seen Mass baptisms and of course there's some claims of O over spiritualization and you know there's all sorts of debate there as well but it does seem like something potentially is going on I'd love to get your take on just what you think from Asbury down the line while culture is going in this very chaotic direction we we see these glimmers of potential hope what is your reflection on that so large picture beginning in late 2019 I began to sense a greater hunger and Desperation for Revival and seeing God moving more earnestly more and more churches focusing on the need for visitation and I was preaching on God coming as a Refiner's Fire and next thing Co hit and then the death of George Floyd and the riots and then the upheaval of the election and all the false prophecies about Trump serving a consecutive years and then January 6th and it was only sometime afterwards I realized looks like the shaking started looks like the refiners fire is at work already and then during that time scandal after scandal after scandal in the church every different quarter it's like okay ref finer as far as here late in 2022 into the very beginning of 2023 virtually everywhere I went not because I was there but I was witnessing it virtually everywhere I went I was seeing outpouring I was seeing churches where the young people were flocking where people were getting saved left and right where worship was going on for hours and I knew that something began I got on the air I was actually at the Y BAS in Kona Hawaii teaching and doing radio before I started and I said I just want you to know this it's been clear to me for some months but I want to say it publicly the beginning of the first wave of the next Revival has hit it's already here eight days later asbery happened and I got back on the air I said look I told you something's going on I actually have two books this one sees the moment came out in January how to fuel the fires of Revival the whole thing is saying when God starts to move what then because it's not going to be in just one place it's going to be in hundreds thousands of places what do we do the book that comes out beginning of may turn the tide how to ignite a cultural Awakening when God's moving in the church then what how do we see outpouring in the church become Awakening in society how do we see Revival in the church become Reformation in society so it's still early it's beginning stages but something's up I encourage pastors leaders all over America get your spiritual radar up in faith and hope God if you're moving here if you're moving there what about us what about where we are begin to pursue him more earnestly seek him with greater desperation and then let's just notice the larger culture the push back against cultural Madness continues when I can quote people like Joe Rogan and Bill Mah and Richard Dawkins supporting many positions that we hold to and talking about the insanity of what's happening in the culture something is going on the boycott against Bud Light was not started by Christians that was people like Kid Rock you know so people are just saying enough is enough the left has overplayed its hand of course salvation is not in the left or in the right it's found in the Lord but something is going on that's that's why I have these books that have just come out because but I know that we've got to grab hold of this moment and pressing earnestly and if we do these next three four five years we could really see something happen so as we as we go here where can people go
