What Is the Best Home Defense Ammo for AR-15 ?

one of the top questions you guys ask is what ammo should i use for my ar rifle for home defense and in this video i'll be answering that question but first quick reminder we have a gun giveaway going on right now you can enter for free but it ends really soon just click the link in the description down below to learn which brand new gun you could win [Music] all right let's talk a little bit about ar-15 ammo and i'm gonna start out by telling you i am no expert there is a science to this and there's lots of different opportunities to have great performance from your ar-15 but you're going to need to do some of that research yourself first thing i want to make sure that you know when you buy an ar-15 i would suggest that you get the 5.56 chamber not the 223 chamber because you can fire 223 remington in a gun that is chambered for 5.56 but not the other way around so take a look at your gun make sure you know what the chambering is because there are slight differences in that chambering and like i said you're adding extra pressure to a 223 chamber when you're using 5.56 ammo and it will be listed on the box here's some wolf ammo some imported stuff 223 remington 55 grain ammunition and you're asking what is the best stuff to use for home defense well consider this that your home defense shots are going to be short you're not going to be firing at 600 yards or doing ultra long range stuff where you're dealing with a a really relatively heavy bullet like this 75 grain hornaday heavier bullets are better for long distance they buck the wind a little bit better and they carry a little bit more energy downrange but when we're talking 25 feet out to maybe 50 yards for your home defense stuff these lighter bullets the standard is a 55 grain bullet and whether you use full metal jacket or one of these polymer tipped expanding bullets it's it's really not going to make all that much difference this 40 grain vmax hornaday bullet just does a devastating number on coyotes so i'm certain it would work really well in a home defense application the polymer tip makes sure that the bullet expands and dumps all of its energy into the target other than that your ar-15 with just standard 55 grain full metal jacket ammo is going to work very well at home defense distances and you really don't have to worry too much about pass-through and over penetration with the ar-15 you have to worry some but if you put that round into your target that means you hit a human being you don't miss you hit that human being even the full metal jacket it's going to get distorted it's going to tumble it might even break up and if it does come out of your target it's going to lose a lot of energy and it's not going to go through a whole bunch of walls it's a light bullet going really really fast that means there's a lot of energy getting transferred and that bullet doesn't hold up really well on second and third barrier if you want something that's really going to not penetrate through anything out there in front you can hear it rattling in there this is frangible ammunition this happens to be from a company called custom cartridge allegiance ammo also makes some frangible ammunition and this stuff is compressed um copper and some other elements in there that's compressed under super high pressure and when you fire it if you don't hit a human target it basically turns to powder when you miss and it hits something else so it's not going to have any over penetration problems or things like that basically the human body is 70 liquid when it hits flesh it makes a devastating wound and the soft shot ammo that we have here from custom cartridge they practically guarantee a one-shot stop because it transfers that much energy into the target so if you really want to be extra careful look for frangible ammunition or something like this the polymer tip v-max bullets that are coming with hornaday rounds those work really great for home defense applications but truly you can't go wrong with just the standard 55 grain full metal jacket ammunition it works very well it will quote unquote solve your problem if you need to use your ar-15 to defend your home want to know when it's legal to draw your gun click the video right next to me to reveal a detailed explanation from a former police officer and competitive shooter let me give you a definition of lethal force lethal force is any force that would cause death or great bodily harm
