if not corrected an unstable aeroplane will side slip down when rolled to one side this effect is not desirable so how can we reduce it by tilting the wingtips upwards the aeroplane becomes naturally more stable in the lateral plane this is called dihedral and in simple terms this is how it works lift acts perpendicular to the relative airflow if the aeroplane rolls to the side when disturbed by a gust of wind the lift vector leans to the side with the airplane it creates a resultant sideways facing force that makes the airplane side slip in the same direction as a result of this side slip the airplane is subjected to a sideways component of the relative airflow due to dihedral the lower wing meets the upcoming relative airflow at a greater angle of attack than the upper wing consequently the lower wing produces more lift and helps the airplane roll back to its original position and this is how dihedral improves lateral stability you
