[Music] was Bobby wac the most disrespectful Man in Black History he was the legend who dropped 23 albums and strutted into the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 but guess what not everyone's toasting his Fame some peeps out there are throwing some major shade saying he ain't worth crack Sam Cook W's friend and Mentor got assassinated in 64 bobby shows up at his buddy Sam Cook's funeral but y'all won't believe this he didn't just come to pay respects oh no this guy rolled up in Sam's car decked out in Sam's slickest suit and hold on to your wigs with Sam's Widow on his arm and if you think that's wild strap in Bobby didn't just stop there he went ahead and married Sam's Widow well if you think that's messy hold on to your mimosas because they are about to get ridiculously scandalous Bobby cranked up the Scandal Notch by dipping into a fling with his stepdaughter yes child the same daughter who later married his brother and had seven kiddos together talk about keeping it all in the family so who's got the popcorn because this Saga is more Tangled than last year's Christmas lights born in the rough edges of Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood Bobby was the third of five brothers Brothers in a family so strapped for cash they'd fish Pig snouts from Supermarket trash imagine that level of Hustle the wac household was a tight squeeze with Bobby and his brothers all crammed into one bed but child his mama bless her soul told him he could sing his way right out of that ghetto and he would always say if you want to leave the ghetto being poor you could sing your way to success now get this despite living in such tough conditions that even the rats got a free pass Bobby didn't just survive he thrived raised in a devout Baptist Home music was their escape and salvation his daddy was a steel worker by day and a gospel singing guitar playing preacher by night and though he warned those boys not to touch his precious guitar ever touch it you know he said something going very bad going to happen to you and he slept in and we get the getar I just love playing it was like being able to express myself not knowing how to express myself unless I had their guitar mischief and fate LED Bobby to break a string and cleverly swap it with a shoelace instead of a whooping Bobby got to show his chops wowing his daddy with a mix of Andress sovia and BB King on a six string one string short and one particular time he was playing in an E string pop then Bobby's father arrived home after a long day at the steel mills when he say who's been playing My Guitar everybody pointed to me he says I'm going to put the string back on he says but you're going to have to play it and I started playing and I think I was the first one played but he gets out behind my neck before Jimmy Hendrick I hadn't even known him then well I was playing slide I was playing everything and he he was shock and would you believe after that performance their daddy bought guitars for all the boys kickstarting Bobby's musical Journey with the revelation of knowing that that Bob could play and then uh later on finding out that we could sing too that really that was a revelation for my father as a southpaw Bobby flipped his guitar upside down to play not even realizing you could rering it for left-handed Geniuses like himself his career took off in the mid-50s when he hit the road with his brothers as the wac brothers jazzing up the Midwest gospel circuit but honey it was Sam Cook who spotted their spark and took them under his wing turning them from gospel Golden Boys to secular Soul Sensations as the Valentino that was hard for me to tell my father that we didn't want the same gospel he said spent all this time working with you guys and you guys want to go to the devil and he started crying I got a whooping that day I never forget it and the next day I told him I still want to sing uh rock and roll that scared him say it was you guys got to leave here and then he put us out they turned out hits like looking for a love and even caught the attention of The Rolling Stones who covered their track it's all over now it's all over now this was the spark that ignited a profound and enduring bond between Bobby wac and Sam cook a relationship that would deeply influence W's life and career and he called Sam and said you remember the W Brothers guys used to open up for years ago they're still around and so he said at the can they sing and he was saiding can they sing Oh man they tough until Cook's untimely and dramatic death during this electric time Sam Cook was making moves of his own founding s records in 1961 he signed the wac quintet now rebranded as the Valentinos urging them to dive into the Soulful depths of R&B but just as their stars were Rising tragedy struck in 1964 Sam Cook was fatally shot at the Henda motel in Los Angeles this catastrophic event not only rocked the music world but IR revocably altered the trajectory of wal's burgeoning career what did this mean for the young star how did he navigate through the storm of grief and fame guys how did Sam's wife get caught up in this entanglement with Bobby wac but first let's take a look at how it all began at the ripe age of 18 Sam met the youthful and dazzling Barbara Campbell when she was just 13 fast forward a couple of years to 1953 when Barbara was 17 and they are welcoming their daughter Linda into the world life however loves a plot twist both Sam and Barbara take marital detours with other people but as fate would have it after a series of I do and oh no you didn't with others they find their way back to each other finally six years after their daughter's birth they tie the knot and saw two additions to the family a daughter named Tracy and a son named Vincent the marriage however was a tumultuous Saga marred by C's numerous indiscretions tragedy struck deeply when just a year before Cook's untimely demise their third child met a heartbreaking fate drowning in a pool at just 18 months old overwhelmed by grief and the shadow of her husband's controversial death Barbara confessed to biographer Peter galck that these harrowing events left her susceptible to the comforting presence of the much younger 19-year-old wac Bridging the decade that lay between them and forging and unlikely companionship can you even believe this Bobby rolls up to Cook's funeral not just in any car but in Cook's car wearing one of Cook's very own suits talk about making an entrance and who's that on his arm none other than Barbara Sam Cook's ex-wife now get this on February 26th 1965 just a little over 2 months after the curtain fell on Sam Cook's final act his 20-year-old protege day Bobby wac tried to slide into a new role literally he dawned one of Cook's sharp suits again and strutted into the LA County Courthouse with Barbara cook this time the pair were all set to tie the knot in front of a crowd of eager reporters however the plot twist came when their marriage application was turned down faster than a bad sitcom pilot the reason young Bobby wasn't even 21 and lacked the all important parental thumbs up but fear not as soon as Bobby Hit the magic 21 on March 5th they made it official without missing a Beat Just 3 months after the funeral Barbara's proposal because according to Bobby and his Memoir she talked him into it give me five years she says and I'll give you a lifetime how's that for a pitch Flash Forward to February 18th 1965 and Jet Magazine drops the bombshell Bobby and barber are officially Mr and mes friends fans and even family are up in arms calling it The Ultimate betrayal Bobby can't catch a break he's getting booed off stages and dodging punches from Barbara's brother and as if the family drama isn't enough even Cook's dad is throwing shade worried about Bobby hanging around Cook's young daughter Linda Bobby though insists Sam would have given them his Blessing despite the turmoil Bobby claims it's all kosher but then just when you think it can't get more scandalous Bobby does something something so outrageous it blows up the marriage completely what was he thinking 1970 Barbara 6 years deep into her marriage walked in on her husband Bobby Tangled in a sheet with her then 18-year-old daughter Linda can you imagine and what does Barbara do so outraged by what was unfolding before her Barbara in a fury only a scorned woman can grab a gun and shoot Bobby luckily for him it only grazed his Temple talk about drama now now where do you think Linda's heart strayed after this explosive love triangle straight in the arms of Bobby's younger brother Cil talk about keeping it all in the family they even started a band called wac and wac ever heard their hits like love Wars Radio Music Man starbrite and conscious but in the Whirlwind Saga of Linda and Cecil tragedy struck when their son Vincent named in a touching nod to Linda's late brother tragically took his own life at the tender age of 21 despite the Shadows cast by this profound loss Linda and Cecil's Bond proved unbreakable enduring all the way until Cecil's Curtain Call in 2013 it's 1985 and Bobby drops the Bop I wish he didn't trust me so [Music] much the song opens with lines about Bobby being such a good friend he give the shirt off his back I'm the best friend he's got but then there's a Twist he's left alone with his friend's wife fast forward a few years and guess what that song starts looking less like a hit and more like a hot piece of Gossip the rumor mill is buzzing people are Whispering that maybe just maybe Bobby was singing from the heart about a risky little Rendevous with his mentor's wife before the mentor unexpectedly bow out of this world coincidence I think not talk about drama makes you wonder if there's more truth in those lyrics than we thought huh huh despite the juicy speculation Bobby cleared the air in his Memoir insisting that his relationship with Barbara only started after his friend was out of the picture by the time Bobby passed away in 2014 he had a net worth of 250k and his relationship web a hot mess word on the street Bobby's done with Barbara totally off his call list he spills in his Memoir and Linda she's on the same not chat train with her mom as for Cecil might as well be a ghost it's been years seriously it's like they've all sworn a pack of Silence no one was speaking to anyone
