she did a lot of things that uh showed that she was pissed at being uh reduced from the group leader to a background singer that was someone with inside information about the unspoken beef that was going on between Diana Ross and David Ruffin but it got even worse and that was when everyone started to see it in real time there were times that she would say or do things I said oh my God but you went went to territory and while most people threaded carefully speaking to her about her behavior getting worse others didn't care as much I learned that I had to bite my tongue a lot of times and Florence was totally opposite Florence would never bite her tongue about anything if it was whatever she would call it in her day you could say there was barely anyone who could go toe-to-toe with her whether it be lyrically or vocally Diana Ross created a standard with her music that would serve the entertainment industry for decades after her prime even today as she's been out of the job for years she's regarded as more than just a Pioneer she sits as one of the past Pathfinders of what the music industry represents today however Diana even with how successful she became had several issues in her life those issues some of which were magnanimous enough to have affected her personal life also left a blow on her professional life they say with great power or in this case success comes great responsibility but it seems Diana Ross might have taken it a little too much to heart as the singer started to move from one problem to the next these problems weren't just related to her music they affect Ed the people around her as well leading her to have problems with the very people she once saw as her family what's more because of how big she became everyone was pandering to her so it was almost certain that she couldn't see how she was spiraling until it was too late I mean it's not every day you get to find out one of the biggest stars that's ever walked the face of the Earth had a nemesis is it this was seemingly the story that was told about David Ruffin and Diana Ross if you're from the 9s then you probably already know just how much of a hold these singers had over the world back in their Prime and while they made their Duets look like they were a pair of singers made in heaven to complete each other the reality was far from that in truth they did have a pretty public Feud the problem was that their publicity teams had to tone it down as much as possible because having a full-on fight with someone in the same industry wasn't exactly something that sold in their days and even more so in their line of Music These days were learning that the pair didn't just set out to humiliate each other on stage but Diana might have actually hated his guts even before they buted heads not only did that present new problems to Ruffin's advancement in the industry because of Diana's level of success but even the man's personal life took a major hit all because he wanted to go up against a generational Talent like Diana Ross the story has been told from different points of view over the years but new details have just been released about what really went wrong between the pair and when that wrong took the direction it did and believe me when I tell you the Angelic singer might not be as innocent of the whole thing as you might have thought tell you the truth I was surprised she was still willing to talk about anything how she managed to not just be rolling around on the floor screaming or in a metal hospital that's what really surprised if you look at the biggest singer in the world right now how many people do you really think can take up arms against them probably not a lot this is mostly because of how damaging it can be for anyone who steps to them especially someone in the same line of work let's just say David Ruffin wasn't particularly bothered by the extent of Diana ross' power in the industry when they were in between their brawl see Ruffin and Ross reportedly had a subtle face off during the height of their individual careers when their groups The Temptations and The Supremes came together for a joint performance but neither side wanted to take the back seat but there's a lot more to this story I The Temptations in The Supremes were the super groups of the mtown dynasty the groups were formed in 1959 in their hometown of Detroit Michigan as the primes and the prime Mets when they were signed to mtown in 1961 they took on the names that they would be forever known as 1964 was the Breakthrough year for both as The Supremes Stop in the Name of Love And The Temptations My Girl both crossed over in a major way in many ways being the singular examples of Barry Gordy's idea of black musical groups embodying The Sound of Young America though Marvin Gay might have been the labels Crown Prince and William Smokey Robinson the melodic Maestro the two super groups were motown's flagship products given Gordy's sensibilities as a promoter the template for Spike Lee a generation later it would only be natural that the two groups would eventually record [Music] together Diana Ross and The Supremes joined the Temptations and together were the products of Gordy's efforts the release joined together collects the complete Studio sessions from the historic collaboration between the two groups the idea to bring the two groups together began to take shape after the SU creams and The Temptations appeared in late 1967 on The Ed Sullivan Show performing a medley of each other's songs by the early spring of 1968 the groups were in the studio together join was dropped in November of 1968 with the lead single I'm going to make you love me which charted at number two on both the pop and R and B charts featuring Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross on lead vocals the official reading suggested that the significance of the collaboration ended there as I'm going to make you love me was the only major hit from the recordings however while the groups were rehearsing for their performance of each other's songs on The Ed Sullivan Show The Temptations realized that their sounds had been tweaked to better suit Diana's voice and boy did David Ruffin a member of The Temptations absolutely hate that it wasn't just the sounds getting tweaked it's also that everyone was literally treating Diana like an egg this came as a shock because they had worked with Diana in the past and this was never something they had to deal with until now the singer had become the main face of her own group and had her own separate staff all while living like a solo star even though she was still with the Supremes it also didn't help that she was dating their manager Barry Gordy well all of this further infuriated ruffen to the point that he decided to vocally Diana during the performance Diana and Gordy didn't like the singer getting outshined by one of the other stars in this case Ruffin in this reportedly LED to Ruffin's career taking a major hit I mean it's a no-brainer that Gordy's power in the industry played a role in his downfall but on his own the man just spiraled for the worst according to reports by 1967 David Ruffin had begun demanding special treatment as lead singer riding two and from gigs in a private mink line limousine with his then girlfriend mtown singer Tammy Terrell instead of in the group limousine used by the other four Temptations the other members slowly became irritated and annoyed with Ruffin's Behavior following motown's decision to rechristen The Supremes as Diana Ross and The Supremes Ruffin felt entitled to the same treatment and demanded that his group be renamed as well to David Ruffin and The Temptations Ruffin was also causing friction with Barry Gordy by demanding an accounting of the group's earnings mtown partially acquiesced by allowing The Temptations to retain an outside accounting firm but the firm did not have full access to the books from The Temptations manager International Talent Management Inc some of this Behavior was attributed to the fact that by this time Ruffin had begun using regularly building further tension within the group and causing him to missed several group meetings rehearsals and concerts there was a consensus among the rest of the group that Ruffin needed to be replaced when Ruffin missed a June 1968 engagement at a Cleveland Supper Club to attend a show by his new girlfriend Barbara Gail Martin daughter of Dean Martin the group decided that he had crossed the line the other four Temptations Drew up legal documentation offic officially firing Ruffin on June 27th 1968 the next day Dennis Edwards a singer formerly of the Contours that Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams already had pegged as a potential Ruffin replacement was hired to take Ruffin's Place Edwards and Ruffin were good friends and at first Ruffin went along with the Changing of the Guard and encouraged Edwards however at Edward's official debut with the Temptations in Valley Forge Pennsylvania on July 7th Ruffin came to the show and jumped on stage taking the microphone from Edwards singing LED on Ain't Too Proud to Beg and disappearing as quickly as he had appeared Ruffin repeated this stunt several times throughout the group's July tour run despite the group hiring extra security to keep ruffing out he continued to find ways to sneak into the venue and jump on stage when the group performed one of the songs he had once sung Le on it doesn't take an expert opinion to see how that was the beginning of the end for the man who if I might add tried to stand against Diana Ross but it wasn't just him Prett pretty much anybody who tried to challenge the singer's position at the center of all the attention was destroyed in the industry even if it came from someone in her own group oh I heard this one I was going I heard this I heard that you used to on the shows you would spread your hands over the other Supreme's faces see The Supremes made some of the most iconic pop music of the 1960s however one of the Supremes said the group had some major internal problems specifically one supreme Mary Wilson said Diana Ross tried to undermine other members of the group well that you on tour with Diana Ross and that you were shutting it down so cold on stage that Diana had to kick you off the tour bus this way show was shady back then the Journey of The Supremes to widespread Acclaim was a progression that happened in several stages starting out as the perets and going from being the no hit Supremes into one of the most legendary all female bands of the 1960s and70s the American R andb Group even proved competition for famed artists such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley despite the initial lag and gaining recognition it didn't stay that way for too long with the release of their breakthrough hit where did my love go in 1964 the band gained Swift momentum thereby securing a place among the top artists of the 6s music scene the band's original lineup comprising of band members Diana Ross Mary Wilson Florence Ballard and Betty mcglown of what started as the primates soon changed after the band was signed with mtown records by its president Barry Gordy right from the beginning the parody in the treatment of the individual members and their place in the band was [Music] palpable while all three of the existing members of the group Ross Wilson and Ballard were vocalists it was evident that Ross was given more importance in the band as compared to the rest of its members eventually this was what culminated in Ross leaving the band In 1970 to pursue her solo career and the group ultimately disbanded in 1977 adding to this was was also the fact that Gordy was romantically inclined towards Ross which also explained why he put Ross first before the other members as Gordy himself admitted I was madly in love with Diana Ross she was the big star of My Life naturally Gordy did everything in his power to make sure Ross could be the big star of the music industry too however the pair had more than just any random Affair he loved her I loved her yes and still do but you do you still love her the way you did she's the mother of your child that's right in late 1970 after their initial split Diana Ross and Barry Gordy slept together per InStyle a month or two later Ross married music executive Robert Ellis Silverstein about 7 months after that Ross gave birth to a girl named Ronda who was presumed to be Silverstein's daughter Silverstein was white and Ronda clearly resembled Gordy which led Ross and Gordy to acknowledge the truth when she had the child we had no idea that it was mine Gordy told Barbara Walters but Diana and I discussed it and we realized that it was indeed my child Ronda did not know Gordy was her father until she was 13 years old she felt that the child should not know anything until she was able to handle it and understand it Gordy told Playboy she made a wise decision because when she did tell her Ronda was able to handle it well Ronda later said she wasn't totally surprised by the Revelation the bottom line was I looked just like Gordy and my sisters looked just like their father a 6ft tall Jewish American man she told the New York Post Ross revealed the information to the public during a 1993 interview on the Winfree show anyway the two eventually got together in a relationship which also gave Ross a lot of control over the band and developed Her Image as the frontwoman for the group having said that it would be difficult to say whether it was simply a matter of boosting her ego or more as a pursuit of a stablishing herself better in the entertainment industry however to her bandmate Mary Wilson it was pretty clear as she lik Ross's Behavior to that of a spoiled brat as Wilson later said in an interview the higher we ascended the more Diane wanted for herself she began dating Barry and whenever she was unhappy about something she would let him know we get on these shows and all of a sudden people would stop talking to Florence and I and they would direct all the questions to Diane why well I mean I finally found out that they were told Wilson further described Ross's little tricks of doing something or the other to set herself apart from the rest of the band whether it be wearing a different costume for a show or something stretching her arms out while performing to obstruct the rest of the members from view in the greater scheme of things these were apparently insignificant but these gestures were what started to create a rift between Ross and the other band members it got to the point where Ross's own wish to pursue a career of hers could be placed directly adjacent to her fellow band members declining faith in her as being part of a team in Gordy's words Diana never wanted to leave the girls particularly she was more or less pushed out but that's what happens when a person is UPF front and people are telling the background singers that she's stealing the show Gordy's blatant partiality towards Ross played an equal role in the whole ordeal being carried out he said it was perhaps favoritism because Diana was a favorite of mine but she had the talent to justify that favoritism they were doing a great job of of elevating Diane yes at at the expense of The Supremes or using the Supremes which was me Ross had her own account of her time in the band of course it was bitter twet as she related later in an interview contrasting the highly successful career of The Supremes Ross said she was thoroughly heartbroken with the treatment she was getting from her bandmates wherein they alienated her even when they were performing on the same stage or talked about behind my back when my back wasn't even turned plagued by internal conflicts within the band struggling to cope with personal issues and in a dire need to find a place to be comfortable in and to let her musical abilities shine Diana Ross pursued her solo journey and went on to have a successful career like no other a success that seemingly came at the expense of everyone around her while this made many people think less of her even to this day others believe she wasn't entirely at fault and was just a product of her environment one of those people wrote I believe Diana was that way yes people can change people made her like that too the music industry made her like that so do you really think she couldn't have done better tell us in the comments that's it for this video goodbye
