James Maitland Stewart one of America's most beloved actors and better known as Jimmy Stewart was born May 20th 1908 in Indiana Pennsylvania as a child young Jimmy wrote and staged plays and learned to play the accordion in the fall of 1923 he was enrolled at Mercersburg Academy a preparatory boarding school from which he graduated in 1928 he filled his days there playing football running track acting in plays and performing music after graduating Stewart was accepted into Princeton where he majored in architecture and joined its famed theatre troupe the triangle club following his graduation from Princeton in 1932 Stewart moved to New York and joined the university players a summer stock company it was there that he met his lifelong friend actor Henry Fonda in 1934 Stewart won his first major Broadway role in yellow jack that was followed by a role in / 3 for which the New York Times declared his acting to be a minor masterpiece in 1935 Stewart signed a contract with MGM and made his feature debut in the verdure man starring Spencer Tracy Stewart would go on to act in over two dozen movies in the next five years and star opposite the greatest leading ladies of the era including Carole Lombard Marlena Dietrich Ginger Rogers and Margaret Sullavan with whom he fell in love unfortunately miss Sullivan did not share those feelings she treated him like a dog yes well you treated me like a dog but in 1938 Stewart was cast in director Frank Capra's you can't take it with you the film was a huge success and won the Academy Award for Best Picture it made Stewart it's certified Hollywood star in 1939 he again worked with Capra in mr. Smith goes to Washington Liberty's too precious a thing to be buried in books and soldiers the film was not only a huge commercial success it on Stewart his first Academy Award nomination I'm free the New York Times proclaim mr. Stewart a joy for this season if not forever little did they know how long the film and Jimmy Stewart would symbolize American idealism and values in 1939 Stewart starred in the Western parody Destry rides again opposite Marlee Dada the film is another critical and commercial success in 1940 he appeared in the hugely successful the Philadelphia Story with Katharine Hepburn Tracy you can't marry that guy George for his performance he won his first and only Academy Award the Philadelphia Story thank you very much sir it's a great thrill to me to receive this trophy and in 1941 Jimmy Stewart became the first top Hollywood actor to enter the service in World War two soon after enlisting he was qualified as a pilot and eventually led bombing mission I'm very proud to be here I'm going to do my best to be useful as a soldier in the United States Army by the time Stuart ended his war service in 1945 he had attained the rank of colonel and received numerous medals including two Distinguished Flying Cross medals the Air Medal six battle stars and the Croix de Guerre with pomp in 1959 he was promoted to Brigadier General known as a shy modest man he was determined not to publish his military exploits it may therefore come as no surprise that Stewart's first film following the war was the 1946 Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life the role of George Bailey would become his favorite role and although the film was only moderately successful at the time it was released it is now considered one of the most popular movies ever made and to this day enjoys numerous television runs during the holiday season in 1947 Stewart returned to Broadway in Harvey a play about an eccentric man whose best friend is a large invisible rabbit in 1950 he received an Academy Award nomination for the same role in the film version of the play well I turned around and here was this big 6-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamppost in 1948 Stewart starred in wrote his first film with director Alfred Hitchcock he made three more films with the notorious director with rear window and vertigo receiving the most attention hello oh look a man is assaulting a woman at 125 West ninth Street a second floor though we'd never had to search hard for a date and nearly married singer Dinah Shore 1942 Stewart stunned the world in 1949 when at the age of 41 Hollywood's most eligible bachelor married former model gloria hat-trick McLane he adopted her two sons from a prior marriage and the couple later had twin daughters the following year Stewart reinvented himself as a gunslinger in westerns in 1962 he joined an all-star cast that included longtime friend Henry Fonda and the king of westerns John Wayne to make all the West was one he again worked with director John Ford when he starred in the hugely successful the man who shot Liberty valance in addition to his long film career Stewart was an astute businessman and invested in numerous endeavors including real estate and oil wells that made him a multimillionaire he was also one of the first actors to receive film profits as part of his salary despite his success Stuart returned to the service during the Vietnam War before officially retiring in 1968 tragically his stepson Ronald MacLean was killed in action in 1969 he was 24 years old from then on any time Stuart and his wife visited Washington DC they looked up their son's name on the Vietnam Memorial Stuart continued working in film and on television throughout the 1970s he again starred opposite John Wayne in Wayne's final film the shooting you have a cancer advanced when the pain gets too bad I can give you something I'm sorry books however in the 1980s he mostly retired from acting in 1989 Stewart made his print debut when he published a book of poems the book included a heartbreaking poem about his dog Bo I think I feel that stare and I reach out my hand to stroked his hair but he's not there oh how I wish that wasn't so [Music] I'll always love a dog named ball in 1994 Stuart's wife of 45 years Gloria died of lung cancer causing him to sink into depression and isolate himself from his friends in social life in December 1996 the brokenhearted actor declined to have the battery in his pacemaker replaced on July 2nd 1997 Jimmy Stewart died of a heart attack he was 89 years old after funeral he was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles California [Music] not leave this but there are people in this world that must earn their living of course my people [Music] what is it you want Barry what do you want you you want the moon just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down [Music] a few years before his death when asked how he wanted to be remembered Stewart responded as someone who believed in hard work and love of country love of family and love of community through his long life and career Jamie Stewart exemplified each of those values and came to represent them in the eyes of the world his slight stammer belied his confidence and inner strength and it made us think he was just like the rest of us and yet he was anything but yes he led a wonderful life and in doing so Jimmy
