now it is probably the greatest mystery in modern aviation what happened to flight mh370 on march the 8th 2014 the malaysian airlines flight disappeared on route to beijing seven years later despite the most expensive underwater search in history no wreckage has been found and the families of those on board are no closer to understanding what happened florence desanji is an investigative journalist and she spent years trying to get answers she's just published her second book on the subject it's called the disappearing act and she joins me now from hong kong and thank you very much for being on the program first of all i want to ask you um you know the official report into the accident came out in 2018 it was written by experts from malaysia from australia from france and from britain and it concluded that the flight veered dramatically from its original flight plan but you don't agree briefly tell us why yeah i really started this investigation uh looking at uh the official narrative which was based indeed on this incredible u-turn at a point called igari between malaysia and vietnam and the plane was we were told that the plane did this incredible u-turn then flew over malaysia then up the malacca straits and eventually went due south and crashed several hours later in the southern indian ocean when i started investigating this i really looked at every part of this narrative you know how do we know that the communication where he interrupted the transponder for example how do we really know that the plane flew over malaysia et cetera et cetera and every step of the way i basically can't find any tangible evidence we are told of radar data but the radar data is inconsistent we are told of radar images but no one has seen the radar images none of the countries in the region have been able not even the united states you know satellite images everything is missing so um yeah eventually i had to go back to square one and start wondering what could have actually happened but most of my work initially was just to challenge this credit i mean dismantle and eventually completely discredit the official narrative i'm i'm able to say and for a journalist it's quite scary to say this but i'm basically convinced that the official narrative the u-turn and everything that follows was actually a fabrication given that you reject that official explanation so directly tell us simply what you believed happened to that flight well then it becomes much more complicated and um and much more difficult for me to actually put together a better scenario but you go back to the point it's basically at around 120 when the plane disappears from this igari waypoint and you look at what could have happened and i based a lot of my research number one on the official reports where you have all the dialogues between the air traffic controllers in vietnam and in kuala lumpur and also the malaysian operation malaysia airline operations center all this is on the record and what surprised me most is that actually a lot of information that you have in the official report are inconsistent with the official narrative one very simple example is well there are so many uh simple examples but uh one when i mentioned that the transponder had been turned off you know that's what we were told uh actually when you look at the way the plane disappears from the traffic controller screens it takes 40 seconds so that's completely inconsistent with the transponder being turned off another thing is that the plane as mh370 has actually been seen up to the point called betad uh um a waypoint and it was seen by primary radar and that's on the record as well now according to the official narrative the plane had did his u-turn at uh the previous waypoint so there are so many inconsistencies what i came up with based on uh sources basically intelligence um of course all the official data in the reports witnesses and really questioning dozens if not hundreds of experts etc is that the plane when we say it disappeared it actually most likely was just jammed cloaked i happened to have been told very early on that that two us earwax were on site and that's actually an information that guillain waterloo you know the the french man who has very sadly lost his wife and two of his three children in the plane it's an information that he quotes in his own book as well that there were two u.s arabs on the spot and for a very long time i didn't know what to do with that mistake i don't want to cut across you i we don't have a lot of time and i want to get to the heart of what you're trying to say here do you believe that this flight was intentionally brought down by a u.s base is that the crux of your argument here uh well i i can't i can't prove that what the the crux of my argument is that when it disappeared it was basically cloaked by uh awok's plane that's what happened and one hour later at 2 25 it reappears that's official as well when the satcom re-logs and then something catastrophic must have happened at that point and that's why my best guess is that the disaster happened on the north east of vietnam around 2 45 in the morning which has got nothing to do basically with the official narrative why would if if your version is correct why would there be this effectively a mass conspiracy from the governments from malaysia to the united states to france to suggest that it had veered all the way into the indian ocean i know it's a complex question but briefly if you can um the short answer is that i don't have this ultimate answer there are a lot of clues and one of them is a super problematic cargo that i have identified once again it's official there is a lot has been talked about you know there were fruits that were out of season etc but a much more problematic cargo is 2.5 tons of electronic equipment which has not been x-rayed before being loaded on this plane and not only that he has been escorted before being loaded on that plane we need answers and honestly it's not for me to give all these answers i think people must understand that what has been told is nonsensical it is not credible and the authorities are the ones who owe answers to all of us and of course starting with the 239 families which are directly uh involved by the by this accident all right florence desanji um i'm sorry that we have to leave the interview there um but your research is laid out in your book the disappearing act which has just been published in english thank you very much for coming on to
