it's no secret that the life of an nfl quarterback can be a roller coaster of tremendous highs and devastating lows at one moment they can look like a star or franchise cornerstone and the next they're serving as a backup carson wentz knows this better than most wence was on the path to super stardom and it seemed like he was going to be the face of the eagles franchise fast forward just a couple of seasons and on the depth chart he's behind a rookie who people once thought may have to switch positions to even get playing time in the league so what happened to carson wentz that so quickly led him from mvp candidate to a backup asking to switch teams wence's story begins in the same spot where it currently sits as a backup at fcs powerhouse north dakota state wentz redshirted his first season then as a redshirt freshman wence served as the team's backup qb and only threw 16 passes the entire season even as a redshirt sophomore the following year he was still a second stringer and threw just 30 total passage this start to his career at an fcs school didn't exactly scream future nfl prospect it wasn't until his red shirt junior season that carson would be given the opportunity to lead his team as the starter and he made the most of it wence led the bison to a 15-1 record including a 34-14 thrashing of an fbs power 5 school in iowa state on their way to winning their fourth consecutive fcs national championship wince played a major role in the team's success as he threw for 311 yards and 25 touchdowns while also being the team's second leading rusher with 642 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns it was a season that put carson on some people's radars for the 2016 nfl draft in his fifth and final season of college football wentz was out to further prove he could be a qb at the next level his first six games helped with this cause as he threw for 1454 yards and 16 touchdowns but he broke his wrist in the first half of a week six contest against browns for the second overall pick in that 2016 draft and a fourth rounder in 2017 philly gave up the eighth overall pick in 2016 a third round pick a fourth round pick a 2017 first round pick and a 2018 second rounder the birds were clearly all in on wence and believed he was going to be the face of their franchise for a long time philadelphia was betting their immediate future on wentz being their guy and they made this even more clear when philly traded sam bradford who was their starting qb to the minnesota vikings right before the 2016 season two days later the eagles named wence their starter for the 2016 season opener against the browns with a chance to show cleveland what they missed out on by trading away that pick wence and the eagles dominated the browns 29 to 10 as carson threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns in his nfl debut when speeding cleveland like this when the browns still didn't have an answer at quarterback after looking for nearly 20 years was just a gut having enough weapons around him wence never seemed to get over the hump in philly the eagles once seemed like geniuses for trading up and finding their franchise quarterback but now it looks like the
