welcome back to off the bench uh it is tuesday at 7 30. every tuesday at 7 30 we talked to the head man of lsu football coached ozra a national championship winning coach in his own right well coach yesterday another national championship winning coach joins the squad uh coach what's going on man how was it uh getting uh get getting a sit down talk to interact with coach mulkey yesterday oh she was fantastic man you know someone i followed all my career you know she and i the same age she played at louisiana tech with me and your daddy was playing in northwestern that you know from heaven and what a great coach and a great person and great uh great hire for louisiana state university i think she's gonna be phenomenal coach i mean you say same age but i don't know man she called yeah yesterday she said you're older than me that's all right it's okay i like i like where i'm at people i just want to go back no problem hey coach but when you bring someone like that and now you've got national championship coaches and multiple sports on lsu's campus that synergy has to play well right it's got to bring positive attention to lsu in all aspects look at yesterday man we were all over the country with all over the country and at a time where not much is going on uh she's going to be great for the state of louisiana and recruiting people want to come here uh we've got to take out recruits to basketball games and watch a championship team play it'd be phenomenal coach and and and when you're talking to someone like coach wilkin like i said uh both of you part of a rare fraternity in that you have uh you know you're both national championship winning head coaches are is there any kind of common traits that you see or anything where you see something in yourself or or kind of a kinship there like talking one great coach to another yeah get great players yeah i mean i guess okay so okay with that in mind uh you've done a pretty good damn job of that recently i know i know you can't talk about any players specifically but when you came to lsu uh one of the main goals was to put the fence around louisiana right and when you look right now you have a few five stars committed from all throughout the state like the different parts of louisiana it seems like y'all are uh making that fence a reality more and more every year yeah you know about something that you know and i watched lsu from afar all my recruiting you know career sometimes i have success in louisiana and i know that uh how much how much you get when you get a young man from the state of louisiana not only a great character young man hard worker a winner he's well coached so yeah it's a premium to to be able to keep you guys in state and as we all know we got a battle it's always a battle it's a battle every day it's going to be a battle this year but i'm pleased that since we became head coach nine five stars i signed with lsu and we're going to continue that trend coach you and i have talked about this obviously with the dead period because of the pandemic you know you've got this new building all the new trophies the heisman trophy the national championship trophy and you have not yet been able to really show that building and those trophies off and you still had top three class and then your top three already again this year now that's about to open up it's about to reopen recruiting i've got to imagine knowing the recruiter that you are that's almost like christmas morning because you haven't had it for so long and now not only have you been doing really well recruiting but now you get a chance to really get in front of the parents get in front of student athletes which i know that's what you thrive under yes i can't wait to see them and and today to get them to work out we haven't seen a high school player work out in over a year you know i love i love the evaluation process see bob you know you came to my camps i love the camp following the interaction and seeing the parents and just have an activity around so june is going to be a tremendous month here we have official business coming in we're going to save uh the state of louisiana guys they're going to come unofficially we want them to come during the season so we're going to get some guys from out of state and uh some top guys about to say potential first round draft courses are going to visit so i'm excited about that yeah you got to be you got to be hype coach to finally show off the new facilities right i mean like it was like right after they got built and you had all the trophies and everything everything got shut down uh do you do you think that those uh like like will you all be able to take advantage of selling that locker room those facilities and those trophies but no no question it'll be a big plus one of the best facilities in america i think there's a locker room but the players are gonna love it the parents are gonna love it uh and and really selling uh that you know it saves a lot of time for the young man instead of going back to your dorm room with your camp you everything is here you eat here you sleep here you study here you train here i think it's one of the best facilities in the world so coach obviously you know we're talking high school recruits and guys that have not yet been on campus but even the guys that signed in this last class there's been some restrictions on what they can do you know how much they can come on campus so i've got to imagine like you're ready to see maybe them more than anyone because you've already had that relationship they are lsu tigers they signed on the dotted line but they haven't really been able to come to the facility like they normally would yes but none of that and think about this some of the signees i'll be saying for the first time in person wow you know when derek davis showed up on campus it was the first time that i met him in person and his parents i met him through his room and stuff like that but anyway yes it'll be good our guys will be coming in uh we'll start uh the summer school may 24th they'll report may 23rd i'm gonna have a meeting with their parents i can't wait to see most of these guys and a lot of them will be the first time i met him in person coach uh we're talking to coach edo's around here on off the bench um now that spring is over uh you did the self scouting i i know we had talked to previously you kind of highlighted the run game as something y'all really wanted to chew into uh what other kind of evaluations have you all arrived at when you look at your roster post spring uh what are the areas of improvement that you really want to work on now i give you know i got to give jake credit and offensive staff they were in here six o'clock in the morning they were on a zoom meeting with the san francisco offensive line coach which was four o'clock this time in the morning and going over going over the outside zones going over the steps on the footworks and the details so we're going over everything especially our base runs and get the details down which we want you know it's our first time as a staff together and then we're going over the passing game next week and then we should we should be able to start uh breaking down ucla and i'll pause the next year and coach this is also a time that you probably put a lot of thought into roster management i know we've talked about that in the past about you know college football is different and the roster seems to always change and you have to make sure that you have your numbers as close to the maximum that you can i mean are those conversations in the off season are they daily are they weekly i mean are they just kind of ever evolving every day we're looking at uh roster management every day austin and i derek we sit here and the first thing that comes to mind is for me for next year in the recruiting class which we have some great ones already committed is the offensive line we got to replace a veteran offensive line and uh i i can see us having a great high school recruiting class also perhaps get graduate transfers and or junior college players in some key position i think that's the position that's going to be hit the hardest coach uh speaking of position groups um one of the more interesting groups in the team right now in in terms of not really understanding what it'll look like come football season is the running back group now of course you have you you have tdp you have john emery of some others uh oh even like coy moore like getting involved during spring but then you got some really talented cats coming in during summer if you are uh a kinder or a godwin like what are the keys to to maybe seen the field this fall despite only reporting in june you know i think that uh if there's any position and t bob jacob you know this is running back i mean if you if you can take a hit yeah you can hold on to the football and you can protect and catch the ball in the backfield which all these guys can do you can play and i think that that's the position right there that those guys are going to have to play especially with the uh the running backs durability i think that ty davis price john emmy and cabana trey bachman are excellent players but i do believe that you know as you know in the sec you play you play these games these guys are going to get picked i think cory and a monterey both are going to play next year and play well coach just speaking of running backs coming out of high school you mentioned the ability to catch the ball i feel like that wasn't always a skill that running backs had in kind of the new era of football are you seeing these more complete players emerge nowadays yeah because of 707. you know the thing about this team everybody plays seven or seven yeah you know and then back in the day we grew up there was no 707 guys i talked to where you going i'm traveling in miami i'm traveling in las vegas i mean hey when we grew up in the rose we had to take a change of clothes to go to uh go to new orleans that was once a year you know we were so so guys are traveling guys are 707 they're playing different positions so yes uh the guys are coming in there and catching the ball well we still need to catch the ball better out of the backfield than we did last year because that's probably one of the things that you know you had two true freshman quarterback play and play well at times obviously and they're able to do that probably because of the 707 and seeing so many different coverages and you're exactly right like even when i was coming through high school like you just did you did maybe one two tournaments the entire summer but every weekend there's somewhere and so there's really not a coverage or a disguise that they haven't seen yet yep and nobody's seeing the quarterback as deep as yours how deep was your quarterback coach he was coach he was at least nine yards because our offensive line was so small and couldn't block that we figured if we were nine yards back coach that the quarterback would be john david would be able to get the throw off before the defensive line got to him that was the double hey hey all the pass rushers got tired a 15 yard out was a 25 yard throw for john david hey hey look hey if i had brock berlin back there too man i'd have been slanging it uh coach oh hey thank you so much man every tuesday thank you for coming on all right guys all right there is the lsu head football coach at oger on yeah i forgot evangel used to do they all still do that i couldn't tell you basically a punt snap every single snap hey it makes sense i definitely remember kojo coming because john david signed with kocho yeah he signed with usc so yeah i definitely remember kojo coming in the building see there you go that's what he was talking about sometimes he'd be able to go into louisiana and cherry pick and other times he couldn't when he couldn't lsu was at its strongest and right now it's really hard for other coaches to come in here and uh and take guys so hopefully it means lsu to have the strongest all right when we get back let's close out our number one um did y'all see what this lebron james rookie card sold for it seems like every day we have like a new card record i've got like a lot of rookie cards you know if y'all just want to donate to your boy it's the foundation i've got some rookie cards i mean how big a fans just you know full backs are you it may fetch it maybe if that's something similar we'll see we'll see you next uh close it out number one [Music] otb [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] um
