the indonesian navy's kri nangala also known as nangala 2 was one of two chakra class type 209 1300 diesel electric attack submarines it was ordered in 1977 and launched in 1980 before being commissioned in 1981. the nangala a heavy divine shortspear wielded by prabhu baladiwa a hindu god and character in waian puppet theater inspired the name of the submarine the weapon is depicted on the submarine's badge in the indian ocean and near east timor in north kalimantan the submarine performed intelligence gathering operations it took part in the international cooperation of float readiness and training naval exercise and passed the uss oklahoma city in a passing exercise in 2012 the vessel underwent a major refit on april 21st 2021 nangala was reported missing after losing contact with surface personnel while underwater it was in the middle of a torpedo drill north of bali when it went missing having fired a live sut torpedo multiple domestic and foreign vessels were dispatched to search for the submarine's oxygen supply which the navy predicted would last three days the indonesian navy declared nagalasang three days later on april 24th when debris from the submarine was discovered on the surface the next day scans positively found nangala's remains confirming the loss of all 53 crew members on board the loss of 53 sailors is the largest confirmed loss of life onboard a submarine since the chinese submarine chiang chang 361 went down in the pacific the sunken vessels appears to be in three parts with a hull and stern separated according to preliminary inspection the indonesian navy has released video footage captured by singaporean navy remotely operated underwater vehicle which appears to show one of the boats stern fins individually submarines like nangala have a protected operational depth of at least 260 meters the crush depth as it's called would be far higher however as depth increases the risk of hull collapse increases rapidly nagala had no hope of surviving at 800 meters since submarines do compliant down to 500 meters the hull could recover from any deformation caused by the pressure because submarines do compress and then expand again frank owens secretary of the submarine institute of australia told the abc but below that it rapidly gets more and more deformed and would never recover from it until eventually the plates themselves part or they rupture so what may have been the cause of this well it's difficult to say what caused the incident at this stage one or more compartments may have been flooded catastrophically due to a material or mechanical failure it doesn't take long for a submarine to lose control of its death due to a lack of buoyancy but the cause of the sinking remains elusive now according to indonesian naval officials the submarine was unable to escape due to an electrical failure there could have been a fire something particularly feared by the submariners in their enclosed environment it's quite possible that something went wrong due to human error according to the navy nangala may have had a power outage judo margano speculated that the discovery of nangala debris that the submarine may have been fractured rather than exploded as an explosion would have been detected by sonar submariners on the other hand have meticulously established and practice standard operating procedures and the most probable cause is material failure tobagus hasanuddin a member of the indonesian people's representative council and a former major general of the indonesian navy suspects that the refit completed by a south korean company in 2012 was not completed properly hasanuddin also claimed that the nangala with the nangala was carrying 53 people when it sank exceeding its design capacity of 38. the boat according to judo morgano was battle ready had a letter of acceptance and had a history of active firing exercises whatever the cause of the kri nangala's tragic fate would have been sealed once it reached the depth where its hull and fittings could no longer withstand the increasing strain there is no precise figure for the death at which this happens while the indonesian navy said on tuesday that an underwater phenomenon known as internal solitary wave was likely to blame for last week's fatal suffering sinking differences in density between the waters of bali and the nearby lombok strait could have caused a huge movement powerful enough to bring the submarine down in seconds according to officers the existence of the wave around the submarine's position at the time of the accident was verified by images provided by the japanese weather satellite himawari 8. according to iwan is norwanto commander of the navy staff and command school if the submarine was taken down by such a search there was nothing they could do and no time to do so we're talking about two to four million cubic meters of water crashing down on you is it possible to solve that the submarine nangala descended 13 meters and may have been caught in the internal wave it most likely angled downward causing the entire crew to roll down to the ship's bottom and isner want to set this at a press conference held at the navy headquarters in jakarta internal solitary waves are a significant threat to marine engineering and underwater navigation because of their high amplitudes and strong currents offshore oil rigs can be subjected to unexpected high stresses more surveys to detect possible internal solitary waves in indonesian waters will be needed according to naval officers in order to avoid similar incidents in future submarine operations the sinking of kri in angala brought attention to the outdated armaments of indonesia parliamentarian uttar da danto requested the government to modernize indonesia's armaments similar concerns were expressed by military observers kanye raha continue bakri and susan india's kurdopathi while franz wubung the former head of nangala's engine room confirmed that the vessel sinking had little to do with its age he asked that the incident not be turned into a discussion about armament modernization with this we the buzz give our condolences to the lost souls and their families
