Humpback whales are actually notorious for blocking various species of predators, like sharks and orcas. Typically during the northern grey whale migration along the coast of California, grey whale calves are preyed upon by orcas. Humpback whales have been know to circle the mom and calf protecting them from orca attacks. Humpbacks are so large that orcas and other predators don't typically mess with them.
It's quite amazing and not really understood because there isn't really any benefit for the humpbacks by protecting other species.
Source: am a marine biologist. Also another observation of humpbacks stepping up to try to help: my good friend who works on whale cruises was out last weekend in Monterey Bay and witnessed 3 different pods of orcas feeding on a grey whale calf's carcass for about 3 hours until a group of 6 humpback whales show up and surround the calf carcass, and actually start lifting it out of the water and throwing it away from the orcas. She got awesome footage π
ThaaaAAAAaannk yooOoU siiiIIIIIiirrr!!!
"He put his eye up next to my eye." The whale's probably thinking "well I'll be damned, that's a strange looking seal."
Wow. That is an amazing and intelligent action from a whale. But are tiger sharks aggressive towards humans for the whale to protect the diver?
Damn. Humpback whales are like the CPS of the ocean.
I love that the whale did this for her in particular, a person whose career is protecting whales!
That is so incredibly cool. I teared up watching it.
I like that the video wasn't as Dodo-ed as most Dodo vids.
I hope this story is true... But, where's the shark?
