good afternoon thank you so much for joining us for this abbreviated edition of 13 on your side at noon we have you covered this noon with the cleanup after the storm and what lies ahead from downtown to the lakeshore we begin however with elena holland who is in downtown grand rapids and be very careful where you park elena exactly good afternoon kirk will you see these signs here along the street in city streets here in grand rapids don't ignore them this city ordinance is here for a reason and it's exactly for days like today here is why so yesterday and all night snow plows in the city were out trying to make sure those main roads were clear but this morning it's all about getting these secondary residential roads and as you can see here if both sides of the street are blocked by vehicles it can be really tough for a plow to come down this road and also clear all the snow out so that's why you have the odd even parking on days like today so today is january 6th you would be parking on the even side of the road that's so the snow plow can come through here and clear that side tomorrow you'd be parking on the odd side which means they can get the other side they didn't get today i spoke with the grand rapids public works director earlier about why this ordinance is so important here's what he had to say well it's so important because we need to get the snow off the road for multiple reasons driver safety first of all but then also we need to clear the catch basins that are on the side of the street because when the snow starts to melt the water has to have some place to go and if it's still covered up with snow it's not going to get there you can also be ticketed if you are parking on the wrong side of the road so if you want to avoid a fine and to make sure your road gets cleared out make sure to follow those signs and park and follow the odd even parking rules reporting in grand rapids elena holland 13 on your side thank you so much elena the lake shore was hit especially hard and more snow is on the way 1300 underside's keeley lovren is joining us now live from grand haven keely good afternoon kirk definitely feeling the effects of that lake effect snow we are right on grand haven state park lake michigan right behind us heavy winds heavy rains low visibility it's already coming down pretty hard and like you mentioned the lakeshore got hit especially hard from this winter storm over the last 24 hours right here in grand haven holland ottawa county not as much in muskegon but ottawa county for sure so on our 13 on your side meteorologist and the national weather service reported up to 12.3 inches falling here in grand haven since about 10 o'clock yesterday morning you can definitely see those totals adding up here it's getting up to this the top of your boot if you've been out walking around a lot of cleanup going on and like you mentioned this will not be the end for the snow piling up here along the lakeshore meteorologists here at 13 on your side are reporting another band of this lake effect snow preparing to hit these communities as you can see it's already started so they are expecting another development about later this afternoon into tonight about an hour per an inch per hour likely so a lot more road conditions it's going to be slick it's going to be cold make sure with this low visibility when you're out and about with the heavy winds that you leave yourself a little bit of extra time and be safe on those roads and as always drive slowly we'll continue to track these conditions along the lakeshore but for now we're going to take it back to you kirk all right keeley come on inside the snow is not done folks take a look at what's happening downtown grand rapids it is still snowing we want to get right to blake to see how long this is going to last whoa what a couple of 24 hours right for some of us we still have another 24 hours to go so that's the thing to keep in mind that for mainly our lakeshore communities and even for some inland we still have more snow to go first things first our headlines across west michigan winter storm warning still in place all the way until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning along the lakeshore that also includes kalamazoo county can't bury calhoun county you are under a winter weather advisory through this evening you can see the local roadways still partially snow covered and we are still dealing with snow especially right between grand rapids and muskegon and holland so the i-96 corridor and if you're traveling southward towards the michigan border around benton harbor you can see some of that snow continuing now visibility it's snowing for everyone just not as heavy in certain places grand rapids less than three quarters of a mile muskegon a quarter mile and you can see on top of this we're battling cold temperatures temperatures only in the 20s now that's one thing look what happens tonight some of us drop all the way down into the single digits so we'll talk more about the snow that's ahead and those cold temperatures first things first however let's turn it over to meteorologist michael behrens who has the latest on the snowfall that fell yesterday yeah that's right blake in the snow falling again this afternoon so the totals that we've seen already not the end of it we start this morning with some of the time lapses across west michigan that's where you can see we woke up to an area of snow across the entirety of the region with some of those cameras frozen over from the snow that fell last night and again we're adding to it today truly impressive snow totals out there 12.3 inches reported in sparta grand haven and coopersville we've seen isolated reports come in on social media some areas even higher and every report you see on your screen here all 20 of them seven inches and above and here's the striking fact about it that doesn't even include any snow that's fallen since midnight this was only yesterday's snowfall and we've already seen numerous snowfall reports in the last 12 hours by the time the system is all said and done those totals are going to be quite high quite an impactful system over these couple of days here in west michigan impacts today highest along the lake shore very similar in some areas to what we saw yesterday guys all right blake michael thank you so much with these bitterly cold temperatures there are several warming centers open in the grand rapids area they include degaze ministries on south division mel trotter ministries on commerce street and 200 south division are all open daily there's also exodus place on front avenue and the aya youth collective on state street the aya is by appointment only and make sure to download the 13 on your side mobile app to stay up to
