wednesday night fifth world church of christ wednesday evening devotional for september 22nd 2021 we want to welcome you all out there to our devotion and ask if you wouldn't mind for a few minutes secure your bible we're going to go through some few scriptures and this lesson will be yours i've been doing a study on my own on memorials no testimonies full of memorials that were set up new testament has some too so we're going to look at it in a concept of remember me memorials you know all over the world monuments statues and such are set up for people to remember this is the significance of a particular person event place so forth and so on some of those i like the plymouth rock i know when i grew up you just take a day trip with the with the schools and you go visit plymouth iraq and its significance now according to world cult world history plymouth rock symbolizes for many the struggles in the hardship the pilgrims faced and coming to the new world to start a new life it represents freedom and the desire for a better life it still attracts almost one million tourists every year to pilgrim memorial state park just let you know i started when i was little it was a it was a good sized stone growing up i happened to go by it took my wife and children up there a few years ago and the stone has shrunk in size but the memorial is still there and people come pass by and see it and visit it and kind of just try to pay remembrance to what it symbolizes the washington monument in washington dc washington monument designed by robert mills and eventually completed by thomas casey the u.s army corps of engineers honors and memorializes george washington at the center of the nation's capital the structure was completed in two phases construction one private in 1848 through 1854 and the other one was public in 1876 to 1884. all in that we might remember our first president in george washington while on a local concept is the sam houston monument a tribute to courage the sam houston statue was designed and constructed by artist david attic addicts he dedicated the statue to the city of huntsville on october 22 1994 it is the world's tallest statue for an american hero at 67 feet tall on a 10-foot sunset granite base we had an opportunity this summer to go to oklahoma and down in oklahoma city they have a memorial set up for the oklahoma city bombing those that had passed away the symbolic remembrance of the impact of violence the outdoor symbolic memorial is a place of quiet reflection honoring victims survivors rescuers and all who changed forever on april 19 1995. it encompasses the now sacred soil with alfred miura federal building once stood capturing and preserving forever it says the place and events that change the world and there's a lot of them going on all over the world you see a statue in chicago for michael jordan and so forth and so on but i really want to tonight look at some of the symbolisms scripturally that stand out they were quite a few to my amazement i knew there were quite some but there was quite a few we're going to look at probably uh fourth tonight try to look at four and then this lesson will be yours three in the old testament one in the new testament but it was significant to me the things that god had put in place and know that we might remember him or that we might remember his son one of the first ones was the rainbow most of us know about the rainbow in genesis chapter 9 verses 12-17 god makes a unilateral covenant with humanity and animals never to end all life with the flood again he offers the rainbow as a sign of this promise according to this covenant god will never again destroy the earth by flood the sign of the covenant will be a rainbow in the clouds whenever there's a rainbow in the sky god will remember his everlasting covenant god restates that this covenant promise to never again use a flood to destroy the earth or wipe out every living thing is between himself and all of humanity for all generations to come god also includes all animals as part of the agreement meaning that this vow is not only for the benefit of mankind but all living things in genesis chapter 9 verse 12 17 it reads as follows and god this is the token which is a sign of the covenant which i make between me and you and every living creature that is with you for perpetual generations i do set my bow in the clouds and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth and i'm constantly reminded when it rains and i have the opportunity to look in the sky and see the rainbow just how wonderful god is and it's a time when we see it for us to remember that long ago god made this promise to us before we were even born but to all mankind in all living things that he would never destroy the earth by water again and it's just significance for us to us to remember hey look at what god has done for us when i see that rainbow you have a time to reflect and you're you're not really worried about the cares of this world you should you think and you see boy that god is wonderful what he has created what he has promised in that moment in time when you see that rainbow you remember what god has done for me verse number 13 14 excuse me it shall come to pass when i bring a cloud over the earth that the bow shall be seen in the cloud and i remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all the flesh and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh and the bow shall be in the cloud and i will look upon it that i may remember the everlasting covenant between god and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth and god said to noah this is the token or sign of the covenant which god he says i have established between me and flesh that is upon the earth god put this covenant in place for us we see that rainbow we ought to smile that hey god is telling fulfilling his promise to us that when we see that rainbow it's a reminder to us that he's not going to let this world flood by water again some of the other memorial instruments that are used in the old testament are are stones or rocks stones were often set up as a way of keeping the memory of something that god had done or something god told the people to do we're gonna look at a couple of these uh in the old testament i'm gonna first look at uh genesis chapter 28 verse 10-22 and we're looking at jacob's dream when jacob set a pillar in bethel to commemorate a powerful vision of god that he experienced while sleeping there the experience was so striking that jacob felt that it must be commemorated so he erected the stone upon which he slept in the dream verses 12 through 15 the lord stands beside jacob and declares his promise to give his land to jacob and his offspring and be entered also promises to be with jacob wherever he goes again in genesis 28 those were verses 12 through 15 but we're going to look at verses 28 uh 10 to 22 it reads then jacob departed from beersheba and went to herod and he happened upon a particular place and spent the night there because the sun set he took one of the stones of the place made and made it a support for his head and laid down in the place now most of you watching me you got your nice uh tempur-pedic pillow jacob slapped on us slept on a stone it's something to think about verse 12 and he had a dream and behold the ladder was set up on the earth with his top reaching to heaven behold the angel of god were ascending the angels were ascending and descending on it and then behold the lord was standing above it and said i am the lord the godfather of abraham and of isaac the land on which you lie i will give to you and your descendants your descendants will also be the dust of the earth and you will spread out to the west to the east to the north to the south and you and your descendants shall in all the families of the earth be blessed behold i am with you and keep you wherever you go it will bring you back to this land for i will not leave you until i have done what i have promised you then jacob awoke verse 16 from his sleep and said the lord is certainly in this place and i did not know it jacob had recognized the power of god in verse 17 he was afraid and said how awesome is this place this is none other than the house of god and this is the gate of heaven so jacob got up early in the morning and took the stone that he had placed as a support for his head and set it up as a memorial stone and poured oil on it on its top and he named the place bethel but previously the name of the city had been luts jacob also made a vow saying if god be with me it will keep me on his journey that i take and give me food to eat in garments to wear and i return to my father's house in safety then the lord will be my god and this stone which i have set up as a memorial stone will be god's house and if everything that you give me i assuredly give a tenth to you memorial we can read about in the old testament were the 12 stones from the jordan river it's found in joshua chapter 4 really verses 1 through 24 but we're not going to read all of all 24 verses we'll probably look at verses 1 through 8 and then kind of look at verses 20 through 24. but it says after decades of wandering in the wilderness the children of israel had finally stepped foot into the promised land verse one and it came to pass when all the people were clean passed over jordan that the lord god said unto joshua now verses two through five god provides these instructions to joshua what he was to tell the people to do in verse number 2 take you 12 men of the people out of every tribe a man and command ye them saying take your hands out of the midst of the jordan out of the place where the priest's feet stood firm twelve stones and ye shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where ye shall lodge that night then joshua called the twelve man whom he had prepared of the children of israel out of every tribe a man verse 5 and joshua said unto them passover before the ark of the lord your goal in the midst of the jordan and take up every man of your stone upon his soldier according unto the number of the tribes and the children of israel you also read in joshua chapter 3 around verse number 12 joshua also instructed 12 men to get some stones but it was just significance there that in verse chapter 3 and chapter 4 the 12 men from one from each tribe would would pick up these twelve stones in verse number six back in chapter four it says that it may be a sign among you that when your children ask their fathers in a time to come saying what mean ye thy by these stones then ye shall answer them that the waters of jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the lord when it passed over jordan the water of jordans were cut off and the stone shall be for a memorial unto the children of israel so that each time the israelites saw is that they would be reminded that they had not crossed the jordan on their own ability their own strength but because of god i don't want to stop a man i want to ask us i'm not trying to put emphasis on the statues or the stones what i am trying to do is make us think you know we have to pass this on off about the lord from generation to generation we think about our house when people ask and you tell your children yeah this is the house that god has given me and i'm going to share something with you and i haven't even told my wife enough she listened wife that's why i do it a lot of times i will sit in a room and she'll be sitting opposite me and i'll just look at her sometimes she's sleeping sometimes she's doing something else but in the quietness of my heart i say thank you god for that gift you gave me i'm remembering god had given me that gift of my wife and my children and want to say thank you lord what do we have in place to help our children our grandchildren know that we serve such a great dog some people put trees when they buy a house as a significance to the hey the first year i'm going to buy a house and put a tree out here so they grow at the same time as a reminder as that tree goes is how long we've been in this house but do we really spend time teach others about what god has done for us remember my job god has i said that work and when you go through sometimes some tough meetings and some words are passed back and forth and things are said that are not so positive god gave me this job remember god gave me i could be without a job god gave me this job thank you lord but these stones were put in place that the children of israel might remember that god parted the sea in order they might walk across they didn't do anything it was all god in verse number eight in joshua chapter four and the children of israel did as joshua commanded and took up the twelve stones out of the midst of the jordan and as the lord spake unto joshua according to the number of tribes of the children of israel and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged and laid them down there and we could see here that israel had reached the western bank of the jordan joshua commanded a chosen man from each tribe to take a stone from the bed of the jordan these twelve stones were set up at gilgal as a memorial to future generations to teach them that god had dried up the waters of the jordan as he had the red sea for his people it was to speak of god's night might and power all over the nations in verses 20 through 24 the memorial stones were to be a signpost to a lost world specifically verse number 24. but in joshua chapter four verse number 20 it says in those 12 stones which that which they took out of the jordan to joshua pitch in gilgal and he spake unto the children of israel saying when your children shall ask their father in time to come what means these stones then ye shall let your children know saying israel came over this jordan on dry land for the lord your god dried up the waters of the jordan before you until you were passed over and as the lord your god did to the red sea which he dried out for them before us until we had gone over that all the people of the earth might know the hand of the lord that it that it is mighty that ye might fear the lord your god forever most of us are very familiar in the new testament this is the final memorial we'll look at but probably in my mind definitely the most significant one that we could do most of us are all familiar with the lord's supper and we take time to commemorate what jesus had done for us in luke chapter 22 verse 19 through 20 and jesus took bread and gave thanks and breaking and gave unto them saying this is my body which is given for you this new remembrance of me verse 29 verse 20 excuse me likewise also the cup after supper saying this cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you for me this is probably the greatest memorial of them all the lord's supper which is a reminder of christ's body and shedded blood of christ out of all the memorials is the one we must actively take part in each week if we are baptized believer the breaking of the bread service each week is a service of remembrance the breaking of the bread service takes us back to our salvation from sin through christ jesus which was made possible on the cross into which he became relate we became related to christ by baptism keeping this commandment is therefore something we naturally want to do know that we might please god we command it on the first day of the week that we must take of the body and the blood of christ the symbols of the body and the blood of christ to do this in remembrance of me most you know we have that table up there and on the front is written do this in remembrance of me so every sunday we focus on what christ had done for us and finally in first corinthians 11 we'll just go over it again we read this every sunday verse 23-30 it says for i received of the lord that which also i delivered to you that the lord jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread and when he gave thanks he break it and said tape eat this is my body which is broken for you do this in remembrance of me and the same man also he took the cup and when he had sucked saying this cup is the new testament in my blood this do ye as often as you drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you do show the lord's death until he comes wherefore whosoever shall eat of this bread and drink of this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the lord but let a man examine himself and let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup for he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinking damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body for this cause many are weak and sick among you and many sleep you know this opportunity we have every sunday to be in fellowship to be in communion with christ around his table is so special we remember that jesus came lived a sinless perfected life and willingly died on the cross in order that you me those that preceded us those that may be to come could have the opportunity at the tree of life what a wonderful time it is to remember what he did for us and i'm asking us as we go out every day it's easy to do here on a sunday because we follow we around fellow christians and it's it's easier but when we go to work and we go out monday and tuesday what do we do in remembrance of him how do people know how do they see christ in us if you're here tonight you'd like to become a member of the body christ if you like to share in the body and blood of christ you can only do that by being a member of the church that jesus died for you must believe that jesus christ is the son of god you must be willing to repent of your sins you must be willing to confess the most wonderful name on earth you must be willing to be baptized in water for the forgiveness of sins knowing that you might receive the gift of the holy spirit in the forgiveness of if you'd like a bible
