[Music] close to jesus [Music] is [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you well thank you everybody for joining us a very special day we yesterday celebrated the exaltation of the cross with this beautiful cross that father kaz got for us from poland i think father anthony talked about that and today we uh if we use the word celebrate uh solemnly honor our blessed virgin mary our mother mary in our lady of sorrows and it's an honor because i was able to persuade deacon tyler to come to do the homily today so you'll be able to hear him speak on our lady you know as the marian fathers we have the unique um unique uh designation of being the first community in the world men's community to bear the name the immaculate conception years before the dogma was ever declared and we were also the men's first men's community ever founded in poland so our unique connection to mary is seen in guys like brother stephen right now and brother deacon tyler who our blessed mother is bringing to us to bring to the future of the church and the priest and of course brother mark and brother ken where are we with us are the stalwarts behind everything so we're glad you are here we are glad you are with us and let us turn to our lady and now acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray o god who willed that when your son was lifted high on the cross his mother should stand close by and share his suffering grant that your church participating with the virgin mary and the passion of christ may merit a shear in his resurrection who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the letter to the hebrews in the days when christ was in the flesh he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his reverence son though he was he learned obedience from what he suffered and when he was made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him the word of the lord thanks be to god save me o lord in your kindness save me lord your kindness in you o lord i take refuge let me never be put to shame in your justice rescue me make haste to deliver me save me be my rock of refuge a stronghold to give me safety you are my rock and my fortress for your name's sake you will lead and guide me save me o lord in your kindness you will free me from the snare they set for me for you are my refuge into your hands i commend my spirit you will redeem me o lord faithful god save me o lord in your kindness but my trust is in you o lord i say you are my god in your hands is my destiny rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors save me lord in your kindness kindness how great is your goodness o lord which you have in store for those who fear you and which toward those who take refuge in you you show in the sight of the children of men me o r hallelujah [Music] blessed are you o virgin mary without dying you won the martyr's crown beneath the cross of the lord [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to john [Music] standing by the cross of jesus were his mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clopas and mary magdalene when jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother woman behold your son then he said to the disciple behold your mother and from that hour the disciple took her into his home the gospel of the lord but mary is our mediatrix with the lord our maternal mediator with with god himself this is the gift that she is for us and it's very key to understanding her identity as the blessed mother and we know that this this term of mediator we heard a little bit about this earlier this week in the homily and um we heard it in the letter of saint paul spoke in the letter of to timothy about this idea of mediation and our lord but specifically our lady mary she's a this term mediatrix means a mediator a female mediator and so mediator is this one who goes between it's one who intervenes between these two disputing parties for the purpose of affecting a reconciliation so essentially it's bringing two that are separated and drawing them together into a communion collapsing that distance between the two and bringing them into a common union into a oneness and as i described we heard of christ's mediation and we fittingly celebrated that yesterday in a powerful way his exaltation on the cross and as i mentioned the letter to timothy it says there is there is one mediator between god and man the man christ jesus who gave himself as ransom for all and we we might be thinking sometimes well he's he perhaps is the only mediator the only one but we also heard in that homily on monday that he's the the principal one or the the the one at the head of a series but there can be many other mediators that we have with the lord and i think it's particularly fitting that on this day the day after the exaltation of the holy cross that we as we fixed our attention on our lord yesterday the church is saying fix your attention on this the mediator your motherly mediator today our blessed mother and so she in a very particular way is a mediator with jesus with christ although in a subordinated way but still a unique role of mediator and we we also heard in our letter to the hebrews this morning um this idea of mediation and it's set about this idea that in the days when the lord was in the flesh he offered uh prayers and loud loud uh prayers and cries and supplications but this idea of the lord being in the flesh and so we're reminded of that incarnation of our lord that he's fully divine and fully man so he in his own person brings these two together and he in a special way mediates for us but in particular we have this and this is also actually a reading in the uh oftentimes it comes up in ordination of priests or priestly um priestly ordination ceremonies where this idea of christ as a priestly mediator but today we're focusing uh we can see in the exaltation of the cross that we we see that christ is mediator christ was the new adam who was mounted on that wood of the cross that new tree of life and although christ was fully divine that he himself was clothed in this flesh and it was clothed in our human nature that he won that great victory for us over sin death and over satan but who else was there when he accomplished this great victory and who was it that clothed our lord in those garments of his human flesh it is mary it is mary who was there and she is truly that inseparable companion of our lord all throughout his life and all the mysteries of his life you think of the annunciation it was her who received our lord for the sake of the whole human race it was her alone who received him also we see at cana our lady is powerfully interceding for the very first public miracle that our lord ever worked bringing to birth that that faith in the disciples and also we see her especially on her here today she's at calvary she's consenting to this sacrifice that the lord made to forgive us of our sins and so she's constantly there with christ every step of the way the beginning the middle the end in heavenly glory and there's a beautiful line that saint louis de montfort says a great apostle of mary he says it's easier for for to separate light from the sun than it is for us to separate jesus from mary they're so intimately bound together in the communion of their life and so we also hear from the the words of the church um in the the constitution on the church called lumengencium in the vatican council but it describes it says mary in a holy singular way cooperated by her obedience by her faith and her burning charity in the work of the savior in restoring supernatural life to souls and i think that's very important that holy singular way that we are mediators in our own way but in a very special way by god's free choice he said mary you were the one whom i'm going to entrust the great treasure of myself of my son and you will share him with the world and so in a holy singular way she is before us as the one whom the lord says i desire you to go to her to go through her to come to me that's precisely the road he took to come to us through mary and so he invites us to come back through her to the lord and we see this maternal mediation highlighted and we heard of this in the humble yesterday as well and the exaltation to cross this new atom in the new eve but mary is this new eve and as as he was called the mother of all the living mary is truly the mother of all the living not not of this earthly life but of that supernatural eternal life the mother of all the living and we can recall is that that eve the eve of old and disobediently grasped at that tree of life that that fruit and she shared it with her with her husband shared it with adam and they both ate unto their death but with mary the new eve she is the one who is faithfully standing there at this new tree of life which is the cross of christ and she is standing there in a loving obedience humbly receiving the fruit of that tree of life which is christ himself christ her son and she feeds feeds us with his body and blood in the eucharist it's like she she receives that fruit and she shares him with us and i think actually a very powerful image of that this is a very uh powerful image of the cross and our lady but we also have a crucifix in our sanctuary that that is there um you know all throughout the year and it's a very powerful image i think of our lady of sorrows particularly in that connection with the eucharist she's there gazing upon the lord in his pierced heart and she has that chalice there kind of receiving all that love in the heart of christ all the sufferings and the love and able to share that with us in the eucharist and so as we can conclude our reflection on our blessed mother this morning i draw our attention to the words and the gospel woman behold your son and then to saint john behold your mother and these words are very nearly the last words that jesus ever spoke on this earth and highlighting for us the significance of these words and so it the lord is clearly pointing out to us that you know mary is is precisely here in the in the hour of the lord's suffering not only in the joys but also in the sorrows that she is there she's standing there and always present with the lord and by this title of being being woman behold your son behold your mother this universal mediation she has his mother over all of us and we also see saint john there as representing each one of us and saint john is commonly depicted in like iconography as this eagle and it's because he flew so to speak the highest or the deepest into the mysteries of christ and to really understanding his heart who he is for us his divinity i think it's precisely because he's had such an intimate communion with our lady that he was able to penetrate into these mysteries especially the suffering and the love in the heart of our lord and so our lady has this unique vocation of bringing us face to face with the love in the heart of christ crucified and because john was there with her he was able to to behold that love in the heart of our lord and and so i think the call for us today is to receive mary as that precious gift of that that mediatrix in our lives to to take her into our own homes as it says at the end of the gospel from that hour the disciple took her into his home and so we asked for that grace to be like john to be also like saint joseph whom we celebrate this year who took her into his into their homes into all that made up their inner life to their hearts so that we can allow her to become as she was for christ for joseph for john that inseparable companion along every aspect of our lives in the joys but also in the sorrows and i think as a last point here i'm thinking there's there's a beautiful image of um in the lord of the rings there's this image where lady galadriel who's kind of very much a figure of the blessed mother but she's going to giving to uh frodo the little character who's on this pilgrimage um in the in the story and and she says you know here's i give to you a gift and the gift is this this precious little flask but it contained the light of a star one of the most beloved stars of the of the elves of the people of galadriel and she says to frodo she says let this be a light for you when all other lights go out and i think that is who our lady of sorrows is when all other lights go out when everybody seems to have abandoned us as it was for our lord and his life she is the light that is there at our crosses at our sufferings her light never goes out she's always standing there with us and so we asked for that grace today to turn to our blessed mother especially in our hour of sufferings in our difficulties our crosses that we would truly welcome her into our homes into our hearts into our lives that she would be for us that inseparable companion in our lives that we may draw strength from her standing by the cross that we face and be nourished by the food the motherly food that she feeds us with which is her son's body and blood jesus our lord and the eucharist so let us stand now and offer our petitions to our heavenly father who is rich in compassion and mercy to the hands of our blessed mother mary for all bishops priests and deacons may the hope our holy mother shares with them give them strength and vibrancy for their ministry let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for safety and peace in our communities and nations let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those suffering from loneliness or depression may the holy spirit fill them with hope let us pray to the lord r for this community of faith may the graces offered in the blessed sacrament unite us more closely to one another let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they rejoice with god and the blessed mother in heaven let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we pray for all of our special intentions that we hold in the silence of our hearts we commend all these petitions through the intercession of our sorrowful mother to the lord let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we also pray for all the members of the association of marian helpers the confraternity of the immaculate conception both living and deceased and for all the intentions they have entrusted to us as well as all those who call or write to us may the lord favorably hear their prayers and strengthen them in faith hope and love let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer heavenly father through the hands of our blessed mother mary the gift you have given us on the cross we commend ourselves to you and we ask for her intercession to bring us to your cross and to your feet and ultimately to your kingdom we ask this through christ our lord [Music] this [Music] is [Music] is [Music] pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] [Music] receive o merciful god to the praise of your name the prayers and sacrificial offerings which we bring to you as we venerate the blessed virgin mary whom you graciously gave to us as a most devoted mother when she stood by the cross of jesus who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you and with yours lift up your hearts we lift them up let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation to praise your mighty deeds in the exaltation of all the saints and especially as we celebrate the memory of the blessed virgin mary to proclaim your kindness as we echo her thankful hymn of praise for truly even to earth's ends you have done great things and extended your abundant mercy from age to age when you looked on the lowliness of your handmaid you gave us through her the author of our salvation your son jesus christ our lord through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever may our voices we pray join with theirs in one chorus of exultant praise as we [Music] god acclaim hosts heaven and earth [Music] is he who comes in the name of the things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts that we have brought to you for consecration that they may become for us the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] my god in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me jesus mercy the mystery of faith we proclaim your death oh lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint faustina and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and
