WEC 53: Dominick Cruz vs Scott Jorgensen | December 16, 2010

all right we've been over the rules give me a good clean fight protect yourselves at all times and obey my commands at all times touch up back to your Corners we are set to go for the co-main event Jorgenson taking on the champion Dominic Cruz you ready you ready let's go and as Dominick Cruz was going through his pre-fight warm-ups Scott Genson just stood there with disgust looking at his opponent yeah had just a look of disdain on his face and this fight is just so big for the history books think about it the winner of this fight goes down as the last ever wec bantamweight champion the first ever UFC bantamweight champion I mean the excitement's just in the air I'm getting the chills the Alpha and Omega of MMA the first and the last this will be an answer to a lot of trivia questions but right now we've got five rounds of champion fighting and already typical Dominic Cruz constantly changing angles he's already attacking the body punching from where angles K in the jab going land the onew and uh you know that creates problems that flusters opponents and let's see if Jorgenson sticks to his guns which is to be aggressive cut the ring off and make Dominic fight his kind of fight dreuz attacking at multi levels and it's almost that a lot of his opponents have gotten mesmerized by all the movement watching his hands watching his feet and they forget to defend something and that's when Cruz attacks what do you think about Scott Jorgenson just coming as a bll forward and getting this thing to the ground really that's what he's got to do but but not the old Scott the old Scott jensson was willing to eat a couple punches to give one but since then he's improved his defense a lot he's definitely not getting hit as he did in his earlier wec days Dominick Cruz is going to have to bring some heavy leather if he's going to knock out Scott Jorgenson so far it seems like uh Cruz is getting the better of this stand up you just saw him uh land a three punch combination there little uppercut overhand right there a second ago and of course keeping that footwork going solving the conundrum that is dominant Cruz in the speed look at the footwork this will continue for four or five rounds yeah and I mean if anyone would not get flustered and frustrated from something like this it's a guy like Scotty Jorgenson he's so strong mentally and there he goes for the taked down on the back of dominant [Applause] yeah you need to be really tough to be able to eat punches like that you know round after round after round just looking to land that big one of your own two very strong fighters in the clinch this is where Jorgenson can do some damage dirty box slow dominant crw down yeah get on the inside tie him up clinch him shoot if the shoot doesn't work go up to the clinch and land those short elbows deliver some knees but you know Dominic's no slouch from the the clinch himself but definitely his biggest strength is this kind of fight where he can dance and use his footwork and land punches from the outside move his head really been looking for that uppercut tonight good hook to low kick right there and the way he throws that I mean he travels so far he throws that hook and travels to the left a couple of feet and he just can't help but land that cting low kick on the thigh Jorgenson staying patient not getting frustrated by the movement of dominant Cruz the champion remember the winner retires the wec belt plus gets the UFC first ever bam weight belt another crushing low kick to the thigh those are going to add up from Dominic Cruz really letting his hands go putting together combinations beautifully while he's [Music] moving 90 seconds to go here in round number one this one scheduled for five snapping the jab is dominant Cruz ficient for that uppercut he's been looking that all around what's amazing about Cruz is he's got power on those punches even when he's falling off the back foot even when moving backwards like with with Bulls that's what he landed his best stuff and Bs was coming forward he was moving back and countering him there's that uppercut again finishes with the low kick be interesting to see what Scott Jorgenson's Corner tells him on the break as we go under a minute minute to go here in round number one this one for the UFC bantamweight bout and the we bantamweight title oh another crushing low kick to the thigh he's really tenderizing that leg and it's only the first round I mean if he keeps that up by round three or four it's really going to slow down Scotty's footwork and it's going to even make him harder to chase him down and follow him and cut the cage off that one looked a little low referee didn't notice I think Dominic smells a little blood in that right thigh and you can feel that when the when the the hard part of that shinbone just digs in the meat of the thigh you can really feel that but oh Scot on the back of Dominick Cruz beautiful takeown Great Escape by Dominic Cruz now he's on top in side control and we will see a second round when we return to jobing.com arena in Glendale Arizona you're watching the wec at the start of round number two from jobing.com arena and Glendale Arizona the champion Dominic Cruz in the red trunks the Challenger Scott jansson in the white trunks really good round for Dominic Cruz was able to land the combinations found a home for that low kick it was wealth fishing for that uppercut a lot he was able to land that a little at the end of the round and now he's looking to go to his wrestling and it looks to me is if Scott jensson has now adopted a dominant Cruise style approach more on his bike dancing around moving quick quicker yeah if you can't beat him join him right Tod yeah jorgens saying he can't help but feel he's going to get a little flustered a little perplexed with all this movement what really frustrates you as a fighter is when you keep swinging that air when the guy keeps moving his head just getting out of the way of those punches and then countering you and that's definitely going to start to Rattle Scotty jensson as this fight goes [Applause] on fight combination working good there's that low kick again DX's Corner was calling for the two three pivot it probably means a right straight left hook and hitting the angle stepping off when you're done and he just seems to do that any way by like any combination he throws Jorgenson's Corner calling for him to bring the fight to Cruz but the problem with Cruz is or solving Cruz is is pinpoint accuracy when you're coming in to close the gap you're going to eat some serious punches he is accurate but Scotty seems to be landing a little more this round and the evidence of that is on the bridge of Dominic's nose and you wonder if that's still maybe some of that same scar tissue from Joseph Benitas this is the pace in the bantamweight vision of the wec and this is what the UFC is going to get and this time is Dominic Cruz with the shot beautiful way of mixing it up being unpredictable all the Striking all that movement you all you got Scotty thinking about is getting hit with those punches and defending them then when he least expects it dropping into that double leg and securing the take down and this is something you don't see much out of Scott Jorgenson when was the last time you seen him have to work from the guard he's usually the better wrestler in his fights Dominic Cruz continuing to mix up his attack from multi level Scott Jorgenson now working from the guard trying to slow down Cruz and trying to get some points in this second round and you can really argue that that Scott Jorgenson is the better pure wrestler but when it comes to MMA wrestling hitting a guy with punches and kicks stepping off and dancing then dropping to the taked down Dominic Cruz has the advantage in that department oh some blistering elbows from Cruz the crowd [Applause] reacts Cruz holding the single jensson works his way to the side of the cage trying to get up [Music] Cruz is trying to get past him here but Jenson doing a great job of getting that healing there trying to get him off pushing him back using his hook well create space he really wants to get his back against the defense and pop back up I mean he's losing his fight here on the back and uh really doubtful if he's going to submit Dominic Cruz from his back here that's really not watch back to the Head watch back to the head all slow to you know five rounds he be able to keep up at the at Dominic Cruz's Pace Dominic's used to go in five rounds under 90 seconds here in the second round we are scheduled for five this for the bantamweight belt of the wec and the very first ever UFC bantamweight title vicious ground and pound from Cruz and when I asked Jorgenson about you know doing the five rounds for the first time he says that he hits pads and wrestles for an hour straight no breaks and when it comes to SP ing he does 10 5minute Rounds unfortunately right now for Scott jensson that pad is hitting back in the form of dominant Cruz trying to work himself over to side control Jorgenson Trying to minimize the damage as we go under 50 seconds once again Dominic in complete control here in round two looking to step over into a mount he's got to get back to his feet [Applause] you Dominic getting back on his bike Scotty Escape got back up so now it's time to move oh front jump knee lands follow with a nice slow kick and Scotty almost landed that counter knee there as Dominic came in for the shoot final 15 seconds here of round number two Scott Jorgenson with his back up against the cage and again Dominick Cruz bringing the speed so we will go to a a third round when we return to Glendale Arizona this is World extreme cage fighting cut away but he landed a nice kind of high kick as uh Dominic came in right away Dominic picking up right where he left off he lands the right hand and immediately gets out of arm's way Jorgenson's Corner asking him to bring the fight to Cruz not to wait you know Jorgenson hits hard I mean the evidence the evidence of that is written on Cruz's face oh short little right hand momentarily drops Scott looks like he recovered quick from it Dominic's Landing a lot more punches than Scott in this fight but the few that Scott landed did some good damage Dominick Cruz and Scott Jorgenson Cruz is the defending wec Champion if he wins he will retain that belt plus he will get the UFC bantamweight belt the first ever and those low kicks have to be taken a toll on Jorgenson's leg I mean he's Landing them right with that high part of the shin and right into the meat of the thigh time after time again oh then he goes upstairs jeez Jenson could take a shot Scott Jorgenson with all kinds of heart but right now he has got to find a way to get some combinations and string together he needs to stun Cruz and slow him down and you know I talked about him land those low kick low kick after low kick and like you your brain cannot help but think about the low kick when your thigh is hurt like that and then the head's open did a great job of going upstairs land that high kick high but props to Jorgenson for eating it you got to talk about the conditioning of dominant Cruz to be able to keep this pace and move that much let alone land punches with power and kicks yeah unbelievable I mean just uh perpetual motion the whole time he just doesn't stop it's and he's got that swarming style where he's dancing got the pretty footwork then he just comes in with a barrage of strikes and a counter just when jensson looks like he's got an opportunity to close the gap and get some dirty boxing in Cruz slips away yeah good stuff from Dominic Cruz excellent head movement you know some people criticize him keeps his hands down so much but when you can slip punches like that you know it's obviously working for [Applause] him and also when you keep that kind of distance that kind of range it's it's a little safer to and I can see being critical Dominick Cruz if he did this for a round or two and then just started slowing down and gassing out but this is how he's going to fight for five rounds but Jorgenson did the right thing there when uh Dominic's bobbing his head from side to side like that with his hands down don't try to punch and let the kicks go and don't try to kick to the Head kick the body and hopefully Ducks into something like you saw at the second round there too when uh Dominic went for that [Applause] shot Cruz continues to stop Jorgenson looks for an [Music] answer under two minutes to go here in round number three again we are scheduled for five rounds in this title fight just some good stuff from from Cruz I mean jensson has the cage cut off but he's still able to slip punches move side to side and counter and get out of Harm's Way up Cruz able to brush Jorgenson aside Scott Jorgenson in the white trunks continues to move forward trying to take the Champs heart and his belt that Jabs taking a toll on Scott Jorgenson's right eye you see that blistering jab begin to swell it up there I want to say that no what a knee tap I mean he hit that from a lot farther away than he usually does I didn't think he'd end up getting it but it just shows how good he is at that takedown we saw him landed over and over in the Benitas fights and man just hit it there on Scotty Jorgenson who's a phenomenal wrestler Jorgenson now trying to lock him up one minute to go here in round number [Applause] three so far just a smart fight from Cruz you know the timing on the takedowns is just perfect just impeccable we talk about Relentless fighters in the wec now making the move to the UFC that will be a great attribute moving forward and a lot of people are already talking about the potential Uriah Faber dominant Cruz matchup let's not get ahead of ourselves but that would be an explosive beautiful hook sweep there by Jorgenson he's on the back of Cruz Cruz with a beautiful Escape Great Escape but man I mean he got on his back Cruz could have been in trouble there that was a nice sweep there from Scot it you know you don't expect that from a wrestler off his back and it shows you how well-rounded Jon is even though he us right now Final 5 seconds from Glendale as we get set to launch into round number four Dominick Cruz and Scott Jorgenson going to the fourth round let's go here we go with round number four Jon's got oh Blister in right hand from Cruz jenson's got to know he's down on the scorecards he's got to make something happen he's got to push the pace cut the ring off I'm surprised we haven't seen any more low kicks out of uh Jens and again Cruz makes the takedowns look easy like Jorgenson is like a hell of a wrestler and and he just taking him down and will now and again Dominic Cruz is so difficult to handle because he comes at so many different levels just when you think you may have a shot on him he he he keeps it up his head movement you showed that and documented that so well and the more dominant wrestle you'd have to say is Scott jensson but tonight it's Dominic M wrestling and yeah yeah he makes his that up well with the movement but it's also Landing those punches that makes the take down that easy when you snap a guy's head back and get him thinking about man I got to defend these punches he totally forgets about the fact that you could go for a taked down go underneath him put him on his back and win the fight well Dominick Cruz win this fight and again he will have the UFC and wec bantamweight belts but he's going to know he was in a work cuz Scott jensson is not going away he may be down the cars but this kid has got so much heart I mean 8 and 1/2 minutes is a hell of a long time in MMA like so much could happen in that time can't count him out just yet well you think of the fight between cha sunnon and Anderson Silva I mean the whole time you're thinking oh Cha's got this ch's got this3 and half minutes of complete domination and the last two minutes he turns the table so Scott Jenson is going to have to find something like that but we have yet to see any chinks in the armor of Dominick Cruz the defending Champion right now who is just having his way on the ground and in the stand up game he really is he knows he's way ahead on the scorecards got easy taked down he's just going to stay busy right now really no need to take too many chances you know once you build up a comfortable lead like that you don't need to go For Broke you don't need to stand toe for toe Scotty good job getting back up and they're back to the [Applause] feet give Dominick Cruz credit a lot of Fighters at this level would probably be getting frustrated at this point cuz he can't end it but he sees the big picture I need this win I need that UFC belt yeah I don't think he's too frustrated I mean it's one thing if you can't finish the fight and the guy keeps getting out of submissions in that but when you have a big lead like that you know in your head you're you're relaxed you're confident he doesn't seem flustered at all to me if anyone is it's probably Scotty jensson now being down this big on the scorecards and really need to make something happen Jorgenson now has just over seven minutes to turn the table on the defending Champion Dominic Cruz Cruz in the red trunks Jorgenson in the white trunks the Challenger he snaps that one there it is I I'm surprised we haven't seen more kicking out of Jorgenson cuz that's what you got to do with the guy who moves this much and uh and you know when he's moving his head like that you're swinging missing with your punches yeah start throwing some body kicks let him duck into them it almost happened right there a minute ago when Scotty threw that right kick if I'm the corner of Scott jensson I'd like to see a successful shot from my fighter that is true I mean I mean just to see we haven't seen that yet let's see if he can do it see if he can turn but it's Cruz again with his patented underhook to knee tap Tak down making it look easy and this time he passes the guard gets to a side mount Scotty Jorgenson counter it well going for that single leg one minute 10 one minute 10 Cruz hipping up back to their feet yeah and we all know Scotty worked at Boise State with the wrestling team spent hours hours wrestling we haven't seen too much many shots out of him that's really surprising me hard body kick followed by a punishing right hand by Cruz both Fighters are just putting it all out there on the canvas tonight here for World extreme cage fighting as we go under 40 seconds in the fourth of five [Music] rounds like right there yeah let let a kick go you know that head movement you're not hitting his head he's got you swinging and missing oh a shot by nice Superman punch to double leg by Dominic R you know that was beautiful he ducked down made it look like a shot came up to the Superman punch that went back down underneath again made the take down look easy that's M wrestling we will go to a fifth and final round when we return to [Applause] Glendale we go to the fifth and final round of an absolute Classic on a historic night as the wec gets set to turn the page into the UFC one of these men will leave the cage with not one but two belts and right now it is the defending Champion Dominic Cruz clearly in control of his opponent Scott Jorgenson in the white Trum yeah Dominic Cruz just one round away from going down the history books the last ever wec champ and the first ever UFC champ all he's got to do is avoid a big shot from Jorgenson and uh looks like he's uh not going to have trouble doing that the way he's moving his head the way he's dominating this fight the way he's Landing punches [Applause] cardio has really been the story because the pace he has started from round one I'd say he's still about 85 90% of what we saw in round one that he is in round five oh easily yeah and I mean I didn't have any doubt that he'd fade in the later rounds I mean that fight with Benitas was a you know absolute battle and he really kept this pressure on the whole time just like he's doing tonight he has not been able to finish off scott Jorgenson but in the end if he gets the wi it won't matter Scott jensson has been a very game opponent yeah this is impressive you know I mean sure if he doesn't get the win like it doesn't matter it's complete Domination by him you know round after round and not just with his striking not just with slipping punches and countering but with those takedowns as well it's about about five or six takedowns from Dominick Cruz and you know the the underhook to kneecap is patent one he went to a double leg at least once or twice uh I mean just mixing up in that department as well but if you're setting fights for the UFC with Shelby and Joe Silva will be doing in the coming year you're happy to have Scott jensson on your roster oh yeah I mean the guy's been on an absolute Terror what's he on a five fight win streak and and uh his his loss was a Split Decision One to Ben Whos that he Avenged in that and uh yeah he he he deserves his title shot under three minutes to go and we will have our first UFC bantamweight champion you know I mean everyone knows Scotty SC to go for a broke let his hands go and try to take down my out but it's so hard when you're getting pot with shots you know when you keep getting stung by punches it makes it really hard to want to go forward uh and and try to get that knockout combinations coming from every angle from Dominic Cruz Scott jensson continues to come forward as we go under two and a half minutes and there Scott looks like he almost got a take down but what hips finally inside trip gets Dominic to the canvas let's see what he could do here he's got just over 2 minutes to try to pull something off and and Dominic really like uh showing some guts he could have just stayed there in the guard but he gave up his back and got back up to his feet he just has so much confidence in his uh defense against people on his back and he showed it about three times tonight final two minutes hands [Music] off and the shot comes from the Champion he even telegraphed that one a little but a power double leg just drove through lifted Scotty up and and and put him down to the canvas with [Applause] authority final 90 seconds of the we bantamweight division will Dominic Cruz be walking out of the cage tonight with to or can Scott jensson somehow mount something in the last minute and steal it [Music] away yeah so impressed by Cruz tonight I mean how are you going to solve this riddle it's it's just the way he mixes it up and his transitions his footwork and head movement like everything his game so tight nowadays final minute and look at Dominic Cruz continuing to work no one needs to hit on the card continues to work still working staying busy staying busy enough not to get stood up complete domination tonight by the Dominator crew staying busy pepper and jensson those small punches add up especially after your eyes already swell starting to swell [Applause] up 10 seconds and Dominic Cruz on his feet dancing his way to Victory well fans of the UFC say hello to Dominic Cruz what a performance by the champ [Applause] and Dominic Cruz comes up to the fence and stares through at Uriah Faber who's sitting cage side it is on just classic Dominic Cruz mixing it up well ending with good low kicks while he's moving to the side punching at Angles front jump knees finishing with low kicks getting takedowns at will good ground and pound elbows from the bottom Little Squid foot straight right drops Jorgenson I mean just did everything right and there's his p a knee tap take down that he just seems to make look easy and then mixing it up fakes a little switch kick to double leg brown and pound from Dominic Cruz really impressive in performance it didn't slow down at all in the fifth and Final Round again more domination working the body power double legs and finishing with some Solid Ground about we go inside the cage for the historic announcement from Bruce Buffer ladies and gentlemen after five rounds we go to the judges score cards for a decision all three judges score this contest 50 45 for the winner by unanimous decision and now the new and first ever UFC battle weight champion of the world dck who [Applause] history in the making here in Glendale Arizona Dominic Cruz leaves not with one but two belts
