Weaving the Dead Hedge at RavenCroft Garden

hello hey welcome to ravencroft garden eagle song gardener here and i am showing you the dead hedge this morning we've been working on this dead hedge for two or three years now and you know it's actually really really working well i'm pretty excited by number one the ability to find a place to put all of this debris prunings what's left after the goats eat their cut and carry all of it has found a place and made a great wall that's now at least six feet tall and none of this was burned which is what we would have done uh years ago but now we've found a better use for it and so this i consider a vertical composting system of woody debris and let me take you around we put some soil from the barn project we had some extra so we leveled up a little section right here that in the loafing yard oh it's like ants moving things from one place to another so i'm going to take you outside here and this is the the let me get the light better there we go this is the hedge a willow golden willow hedge that has been cut through the course of the summer and all the hedge prunings have been delivered to the goats for forage they really really love willow and so we have um on this end oh i think two falls ago well maybe it was last fall i guess it was last fall we actually installed mushroom spore spawn and have had beautiful wine cap mushrooms come out of there when the rains start again i certainly expect we'll be having some more mushrooms coming on and and we will be adding more um spore to the soil so this is the the what the hedge looks like when the willow is growing this is another section of the live hedge so we have the dead hedge the live hedge and a an actual system starting to evolve that helps our small holding be yet woven into a web of life that's stronger yet hey let us know about your projects have you started a dead hedge at your place do you see a place for one in your small holding i'd love to know what you're doing and how ways that you keep your livestock in so this is eagle song gardener at ravencroft garden looking forward to seeing you down the road and come on over and and visit us at eaglesongardener.com where we're really learning about integrated earth medicine how to weave our lives back in harmony with the earth all right see you down the road
