[Music] hey gang I'm Paul with Stud pack welcome back to the channel in this video gang we're going to be kidding out the back deck the post and the beams with some beautiful Cedar it just so happens there's a cedar mill nearby they specialize in All Things Cedar let's hop in the truck and go grab some material [Music] all right guys we're back from the CD yard we got a bunch of 1 by8 8 Footers 10-footers and a few 12 that's going to be enough to do the whole thing now before we start throwing these together and build our wraps something I got to show you first let me have that bad boy rad come out here to the deck the downstairs porch and check out this first post it's kind of crazy this is our worst offender this guy has a bad bow in it I clamp two of my Fest tool straight edges together I'm going to rest it on a bracket on the bottom touch the top of the post look at that Gap 7/8 of an inch and since this is our worst offender whatever wrap we put on this post we have to do it on all the posts so they all match let's head inside of the table saw I got some samples mocked up so we can show you our plan here's our first little mockup it gives us the inside Dimension we need and we got two 1 by10 and two 1 by 8s and it looks great because you don't see any joints when you're looking at it from the porch and you don't see any joints when you're looking at it from the backyard now are we going to do it this way we are not and we're going to get a lot of comments from the purist saying you got to do it this way and we agree with you what doesn't agree unfortunately is the bank account the 1 by 10 are a lot more money so we're going to build a whole column wrap out of 1 by8 and save a lot of money let's show you how we're going to do that we're going to stack them like that so that on each view of the column you're going to have a joint one joint right there and then once this thing is stained with a natural stain or whatever color we decide it's going to look beautiful and this gives us an inside dimension of 6 and 1/2 The Columns are 5 and a/4 remember that 7/8 of an inch we talked about that we need to make up for plenty of room for that so that's how we're going to be doing our column wraps now I've never done these before I'm not an expert but we ran into a guy who is he makes his living doing custom Cedar work Jordan emailed him some pictures of the back of the house told him what we wanted the price came back 10 grand sounds like a lot but that is labor and material for a Craftsman we got on the phone with him to try to get a handle on the price he said look guys I'm going to save you a ton of money I saw the pictures of the house you guys built that all on your own you can certainly tackle the cedar wraps so he said go buy the cedar yourselves make them yourselves and if you have any questions give me a call I'm have a few questions let's get him on the phone and see what we can learn we notice the boards are smooth on one side and rough on the other what side uh do you usually put out I usually put the Rough Side out on exterior and the smooth side out on interior oh gotcha gotcha and uh just a natural finish yeah definitely put some sort of a penetrating stain on it you know not not not that solid body stain as they call it do not go with solid budy okay I I would go with a uh a semi transparent now when you put the oversized new column on the actual column you got you have a gap do you usually shim that yes you do yeah I figured we would all right now when we do our Corners our butt Corners we were going to put a few biscuits just for alignment and some uh yeah outdoor glue and shoot it together with some stainless steel nails that's an excellent idea that'll help with the stability perfect yeah and we just make everything tight right at the Bean or do I need to leave a Gap oh no no make everything well I mean tight tight tight is better okay perfect well thanks again so much Mr Michael I appreciate it good luck yes sir hey guys awesome phone call with Mr Mike really appreciate his time I learned a ton in just a few short minutes as you can see we are all ready to go we're going to rip three of our 1 by 8s by 10 and build one column before we commit to doing them all just in case we want to make a change got my saw stop set up got my b fence with featherboards pushing down featherboard pushing against the fence and we put our ring knife back on there also brought our scaffolding inside on the slab got a nice flat surface so we can build our column wrap on that plus we're about to get dumped on so we can work in the rain let's get our goggles and rip some wood [Applause] [Music] [Music] here it comes [Music] wa wa a huge Branch just fell on Paul's car going holy crap we should get out of here my windshield oh my God holy crap your windshield is smashed holy crap oh no dude wow I'm going to hey get in your truck move your move your truck got to move our freaking cars [Music] man what the heck t it's literally through your windshield oh my gosh there's water everywhere oh gosh and glass and glass oh jeez all right that'll do something at least all right let's get out of here all right woo gnarly I be tree at all no yeah I don't want to be near a tree man good thing I got glass coverage let's close garage doors yet seal the blast doors all right close them I pushed the button I I didn't even hear anything I was like SE through the windshield all right guys this the next day you can get a better shot of what happened to my windshield dang crazy I spun the truck around for him to make it a little easier and every time I moved a little bit glass was falling so I'm going to I'm going to gently close the door we'll get a new windshield today all right guys the storm is passed it's the next day we're going to start assembling our column wraps we got these little t's made up it's going to support this board as we put it up and nail and glue it to to this guy that's vertical then we have to make some more cuz it's going to be a different height we're going to show you that we're just going to glue it and nail it with some 15 gauge stainless steel nails could do a miter but in our experience miters outside always tend to open up so the butt joints going to be a lot better for us you guys ready yeah got all the tools glue bucket brush Rags nail gun compressors on I'll check that we get started all right we're using tight Bond 3 Ultimate wood glue it's rated for exterior use when we're gluing wood we always want to glue both surfaces get a much better bond that way guys I think I'm just going to use my finger to spread it out just like that put the excess right there all right guys we got our first one made we were going to let the glue dry for like half an hour and then test it but we have literally been measuring these columns and planning for these for a week so we're just going to make the rest and send it as you can you can see we brought the first one out here we cut these spacer blocks right here to keep it all square while the glue dries otherwise this would sag and that's really the best way to store in my opinion now we can just stack them right here let's go build the other three 10f Footers and then maybe we can start upstairs [Music] [Music] [Music] what just happened the all stop just tripped no flesh like the brake engaged yeah yeah so that means got to get a new cartridge before we can finish we don't have any I don't yeah it's not something I keep on hand it's like a spare airbag for your car just don't keep one dude going on in this video man oh yeah my my windshield but now we get to see what it looks like with the with the thing deployed right no this what it right here look it tripped right there boom was it pretty loud I I saw you jump uh it's just noise I never heard before yeah I had these on I felt it but I I couldn't hear it yep I kind of think we had electronic problem anyway remember how much trouble we had started today yep all right all right let's take it apart frame it absolutely you know I was always wondering when this saw would ever trip yep cuz you don't want it to right right what was it going to be right and this was like no error at all was Cedar on your bingo card anybody look anybody have cutting wood on your bingo cart nothing but that's insane guys cool you should throw that in your windshield so when you take it to the shop maybe be like all right guys the next morning last night I went down to Rockler picked up a new cartridge obviously there's the old one 107 bucks but love this saw got it installed got the blade on there we're ready to go let's finish ripping our [Music] Cedar and just like that there are our four column wraps for the downstairs these are full 10-footers and a little trick we did gang a rip cut on this board is right here so this is a factory Edge it's kind of rough it's going to kind of match out with this guy and as you can see it looks amazing now this was the first one we did and it had like half an hour to set up so when we came back from lunch we couldn't wait so we grabbed it and we slid it over the worst column the one over here the one that had that bad bow in it it looks great we have plenty of room to adjust so it's going to look straight like that bow was never there those are all done we're going to let them cook for a while so we're going to start on the upstairs I already went up there and measured 93 in is our length we have a stack of four eight Footers right here going to chop three of them off let's get [Music] [Music] going these look so awesome all eight of our column covers are done we also have the fourth piece that goes right here already it's already ripped cut to length it's just got to be nailed on after we install these these were really fun to make we had a blast it was easy and they're strong they're light and they smell great and not a single one of us got a splinter I thought for sure as I was running my finger down the side like that I use my finger as a guide for the glue bottle I'd get a ton of splinters but not on this Cedar and not a single Shiner like the nail coming out of the side but that's cuz the wood is so soft or there was a good nailer maybe yeah it could have been could have been while those dry we're actually going to start on the beam covers up top we want to start up top because the beam covers are going to establish kind of the outside corner way up there at the post for instance if we installed this first this column cover and worked our way up we might not meet up with that corner so we're establish our outside corner set that post on the top deck and work our way down so me and the guys are going to get the first one dialed in off camera and then we're going to go have some lunch courtesy of the sponsor of today's video hungry root all right guys I'm going to whip up some pull chicken quesadillas for the boys today hungry root makes it so simple they send you everything you need right to your door and we're building this house we don't have a lot of time to go out to the store get groceries meal prep and we certainly are looking after our health like all of you we don't want to eat fast food every day so this is going to be awesome lunch for us today it's going to give us the protein we need so we can keep going building that garage it all starts with a fun short quiz it's going to ask you about some of your health goals what foods you like and then it's going to send you a personaliz cart with all the ingredients you need plus a bunch of really cool recipes just like this one and they even send you stuff like cookies for dessert and smoothies and snacks really healthy stuff that's good for you but Jordan I didn't see it in the fridge did you eat it already we got to save it for the ad man all right guys y'all ready for some lunch yeah hungry root all right there's some chicken quesadillas they even sent us some awesome salsa can't wait to dig in first 100 people to place an order and use the code stud pack 40 you're going to get 40% off your first order awesome deal let's eat so we can get back to work all right guys we got this corner complete really happy with the way it turned out now before we make any comments we only we got this tacked up we got two stainless steel finishing nails one on each end here one on each in here it's going to allow us a little bit of play while we get everything dialed in especially our Corner wraps but look how nice our scribe came in right here came down a little bit but as you but if I push it up you can see how nice it looks against the lap siding so we're going to head to the other side and do the exact same thing come on over here we already have our boards ripped to length and to width made a little drawing here so this is the bottom this is the porch side and this is the outside we're probably going to put some flashing here some kind of detail so as water comes off the roof during the rain it doesn't go behind our boards so we simply went downstairs made all those cuts now we're going to scrape them into place the very first thing I'm going to do is our bottom board I don't want to notch it around our corner board and around our siding I'm just going to cut this corner board right here on that faint pencil line hope you can see it and we're just going to slide this all the way against the corner board just like that quick cut with our Buzz saw we'll be good to [Music] [Applause] go I got our cut made this is how easy it is we just have a square cut on each end of this guy no notches nothing like that and it's just going to slide right into the notch I just made up against our post and boom there you go now once we get all done with this we'll put some caul there we'll paint it it's going to look great now the outside piece out here which you can't see is the one down here by Jordan it's full length full width not full length what we're doing actually we made it a little long it's going to hang out past the column maybe we get a shot of the other side Jordan show them what we're going to do the board I'm talking about is the one on the outside right here and if you look over here you can see how we let it run long that way we can dial this piece in perfectly and then we can just trim that off with a router once we build the scaffolding there again so we we already have two of our boards ready let's get our last one made the Scribe one that's the one where it's really going to matter right so this is the board that goes here I cut it so it would just fit now when I scribe and Notch that which I'm just about to do I know that this board is going to head that way a little bit and we're going to have a gap there but that's okay because the board here is going to cover that Gap I'm just going to scribe it with these old guys probably had those since I was like in grade school right Jordan set it to my maximum distance which is right here at the top and we're just going to come on down I'm going to do this one and we're going to connect the dots right there let's head downstairs cut that off with a jigsaw [Applause] there we go guys there's our box be for this end of the porch you can see our scribe for the siding right here and if righted you flip it over Bud we put a little rabbit on this side that's just so we cleared this edge of the corner board up here let's try it out rad we got our nail guns ready to go yes sir cuz I know it's going to fit the first time all right we're ready to put this up now the cover we made it's just a little bit wider than our beam so we put a piece of back of rod in there that's going to help uh fill in that Gap so when we nail it it's not going to send it all the way that way all right rad you ready I'm in sweet come one up yeah nice guys perfect nice land on scaffolding oh that's why the pressure was up must be [Music] all right guys we were downstairs ready to rip one of these boards power went out we thought it was just our building it's the whole town Jordan check the app it's like everywhere so that usually means it's going to be a while but we have 200 PSI in our air compressor so it doesn't mean we we have to stop if we have air pressure that means we can put this column up let's keep working come over here Jordan you can see how nice the back of Rod is filling in right there as I slide this on see that that's going to be perfect I'm slide it all the way on we're about there huh little at the bottom nice's getting it dialed here yeah come to your left a little really yep right there yep all right I'm pushing up I heard it you like it little bit let off a little you got it y sweet all right guys power came back on we got our beam WRA now honestly guys that was a total pain there was nothing fun about it making them was fun but installing these wraps up here and getting our seams as tight as we can make them was no fun but if you're doing a remodel and you want to spice up your columns and wrap them with cedar or anything else that's a great option but what we learned like we're always learning on this channel right what we just learned if you're building new just spends a little extra for a solid cedar post and beams and we would been done when we set these a months ago right we we wouldn't be here right now fighting it right the lesson learned we're going to go ahead install these next three column wraps and then do the downstairs one go on to our next step all right our beams all wrapped and our four posts are wrapped with three sides looks great we're all really happy with the way they turned out we did our outside two Corner posts first we used our 8ft level and you saw that we got this Edge Plum and this Edge Plum so to line up the middle two post with these we put a string line just a dry line across the bottom so when we set our middle post the outside edge it's just kissing that string line right there and of course 8ft level on the sides so that way when I swing around this outside post like that and sight down all these columns they are perfectly in line absolutely love the way that turned out super cool trick to use on your project but right now me and rad have a little bit of work to do I'm going to put some blocking in between these posts for our handrails and Rad's going to get up here put a few screws in there so we're going to throw you into a time lapse we'll see you right back here in just a minute [Music] all right guys it's really looking great R went around the top got everything square and Plum I went around to all the columns and I put padding or blocking in between our cover and our 6x6 cuz we're going to have a railing that attaches here we want everything nice and strong in other words when we screw the railing in we don't want it to move this board and see this Gap right here we were going to take advantage of that Gap to run our cables for our LEDs look at this post I don't have a gap remember there's going to be a board right here so I don't have a gap for that wire why what happened to the Gap well these posts are so crooked and twisted the gaps are just I mean look look at that I got zero at the bottom half an inch at the top and these things are twisted pretty bad yeah so last time we buildt with 6X sixes out here man this is less and learn full solid Cedar we saw some at the yard right and they were like perfectly straight not Twisted we were like oh we should have done that next time promise so what I did just got my little router here put an extension on my fence so I can ride against this board and then my groove is going to be centered because our handrail is centered let's R Us a little channel for some LED lights [Music] [Music] all right guys we're downstairs putting up the 10-ft covers on these big posts what we want of course is for them to line up with the top ones we don't want the top one here and the bottom one offset right they got to be perfectly in line so when I'm right here I can sight up this post to the top one and I'm right on it right I had Jordan get behind me and he conf confirm that I was on it what we're having trouble with is getting it the other way by the other way I mean like like this way we want it to come straight down from the top post imagine they're all one post going right through the deck that's what we're looking for so what we did Rad got up there and measured from that top post to the edge of the deck can you point to that rad right there it's two and a quarter so I cut him a little block at two and a quar so he's going to put that little block on the top of this downstairs post and we're going to get a plum line with the level and that's going to make sure the face of this post cover is in line with the face of the one upstairs all right Bud what do we got to do I actually got to kick this out that way a little bit all right so we have a few Nails in it just to help us hold it and the nails are small enough where they allow us to make fine adjustments like this ready yes sir all right hit that other side again yep there you go try that come on R you got to hit it like a man oh gosh you kidding me but it's Cedar right it's really soft you got to block though right yeah all right I'm going to hit it like a man a little more one more time all right there you go wasn't the cedar that broke there you go cool it's about time dude I don't know if you're a worse boat driver or a worse uh post installer oh check that out guys look how good that looks from the backyard really happy with the way it's turning out and after doing this for a couple of days we understand the price that guy gave us for doing this there's a lot of work involved in this what I'm doing right now I'm going ahead of rad and Jordan I've got my C piece right here for this 10t post and I'm giving you a test fit cuz here's what we're we're not fighting it but here's what we we're figuring out if this Dimension is less than the board I can't pull this one out I have nowhere to grab it so what I'm doing I'm making this wider than this board right now and then we can dial it in as we nail it off so you can see the bottom of this board is proud of this one it's easy to push it back in but right up here in the middle this one's proud and there's no way I can pull that out so all I'm doing I'm getting my blue bar in here and we don't we don't have a lot of nails two at the bottom two here two at the top and that was planned we're going to put more in later but but this gives us a chance to adjust everything so I can just gently pry these out just like that I heard it go and I saw it Go and now when I put this back see now we're where we want to be that's perfect it's actually perfect so a little more right here and I think we're ready to glue this one up and put it [Music] in I'm gluing up the outside wood bads inside gluing up the inside board now that's couple Nails in that edge remember we are using stainless steel nails and our 15 gauge gun nope and now we just set the dial in this Edge right right here don't those look amazing now we're finished with the columns for today there's a few things we're going to do yet we're going to maybe a little bit of sand definitely put some stain on there and we're definitely going to wrap the bottoms with some more Cedar but we're not sure that we have enough Cedar so we're actually going to switch gears on you this whole video has been about trimming out the deck we're going to keep trimming out the deck but now you need to put away your woodworking tools and get out your Hardy tools cuz we're going to continue our Hardy Board Hardy trim band board around the deck remember way back when we stop in this corner right here where the deck ties into the building so just imagine that the band board here on the house going make a couple little turns and continue and wrap around the deck so the goal by the end of the day is to have that done a little piece of trim put on it and painted let's see if we can get it done we made these like weeks ago and we're finally back to it but as you can see I got this one in now this board that we added kind of flared out on the bottom and it wasn't allowing it to go in right here so we put a big old structural screw right there pulled it in now I'm inside just going to tap it with the hammer with the butt in oh nice little more one more there we go now we planned all this months ago when we put up the deck we made it so that all the trim details on the deck including this deck board would all die in to the corner board right here and not stick out cuz that would look horrible the other thing we got to do with this piece of trim we're going to hang it down a little bit so our ceiling dies into this we don't want it like that and have the ceiling sticking out so we're going to hang it down just like that we're going to end up with a little Gap we knew that was going to happen so we're going to use some of the same material we used used upstairs on the freeze and make a mini freeze right here it's going to pick up on that detail all right let's nail this off put up this guy back to the Hardy climbing up a ladder stuff's heavy you flush yep all right it'll stay that easy my wrist will break in probably 40 seconds I got it all right nice it's perfect guys yeah it's Muny let's go yeah baby look at this guy yeah I think when you stop framing for a while and then do other stuff you don't get it strong you could speak for yourself huh I can definitely tell he can speak for himself on that one huh r grab them weaker all right gang what did we learn from the last time we did Hardy fill the nails and fill them while you're installing it Rad's got the Big Stretch it's going ham really easy step but it's going to look sweet when it's done it look from down there awesome it's great you guys look tiny next to that dick all right guys putting up our freeze it's looking great couple of details remember we always paint the cut end of our Hardy we put some Big Stretch here on the butt joint right here and then we put lexel on the top of this guy so that any water that comes off the deck rolls under is going to hit this not go behind you ready R sure perfect cool guys dang all right guys things were going great and then disaster struck if you remember when we were putting down the Invision decking we left it sticking over 2 in that was to account for the inch of material here the 3/4 freeze sticking out over a quarter inch the deck would be sticking out over a quarter but as you can see we're not I can't see Jordan what are we like almost flush yeah and then over where rat is the freeze is actually proud of the decking yeah so Happ and it looks really trash but over here it's good it looks great it's great over there so what what happened that third 2x2 we put on there it's not tight right here see we got this big old gapper so what we're doing I'm pre-drilling through this 2x12 and then I got some 5-in structural screws running them through this side underneath our little uh Dam right here our little deflectors and sucking all this together we tried it over here and it worked really well so we're going to continue on Down the Line see if we can close in this Gap and then this Hardy reveal should be perfect [Applause] good uh it didn't move at all didn't move at all all right let me get the top one we'll work it back and forth something's got to be moving all right guys screwing didn't work on that one unfortunately so we got out Sister Sledge going beat it in from the back like that huh yep right ready yep moving it is we're we're getting a reveal more down y oh we could have just done this you have to worry about all those screws whoa instant reveal really yeah all right more down yeah yeah all right we were all pretty sad for a second and now we're glad cuz a rat don't make me mad you're going to be such a great dad okay we're going to stop so what do we got I can't really tell we got the same reveal pretty much all the way back to that car well it's not the same but we'll dial it in yet maybe get a get a sledge right here at the Joint we can do it right yep let's go eat and then come back yeah I'm starving yeah all right all right all right guys we are back from lunch all fueled up got our paint mixed up let's put some more paint on the stud pack dream garage nice have a movement [Music] nice start it up look at you you know a trick I learned with this Hardy what is since the edges are rough you got to go one way and then then come back the other way so you fill in all those little rough edges it just turns out for a much cleaner end result yep my paint face all right guys got the scaffolding down so we could take it all in and man does it look great now we feel like we did a lot in this video but all we did was wrap the beams in the columns and put up some trim board but it made a huge difference to the back of the project in the back of the house it looks great now don't forget we are going to put some translucent stain on all the cedar so the UV doesn't break it down and our very next step is putting up that awesome lighted railing that we got from Invision can't wait for that so guys if you have a brand new like button just support it with a brand new cedar post but if you got an old like button you're going to have to wrap it with cedar like we did here then smash it for us please subscribe to our Channel if you're not a subscriber already if you'd like to get yourself a hold of some stud pack merch we got it all over at Bunker branding.com leave a comment drop a question we'll see you right back here on our very next stud Pack video
