[Music] thank you [Music] last summer I spent a joyous couple of weeks with my family in Guernsey swimming in the sea Rock pooling jumping off rocks at least the brave ones amongst us and that's not me making sand castles eating ice creams and I also had the pleasure of meeting the Guernsey mudlocks who were out scouring the beach at low tide how could I resist joining them [Music] well today I am nowhere near the River Thames I'm actually on the beautiful island of Guernsey and I'm here with Kathy Roger and Ollie do you want to tell us a little bit about where we are and what we might find you can find old pipe bowls Pottery pieces coins it's a uranium glass yep uranium glass yeah a mix last week uh we came down and went a bit further around and found a basketball which we do find occasionally he's quite a big boy but then I found that which is a piece of lead which we believe is the flattened musket ball musket ball that's hit something oh wow I can't believe it's anything else that's interesting isn't it it's got the same sort of weight yeah as as a this ball and it is a lead it is made of lead well look at that what do you think everyone that to me looks like a flattened musket ball would look like that yeah yeah exactly it's the best guess we've got so far okay well if anybody watching this has got any thoughts on that then let us know so this is Matt he is another Guernsey history Hunter yeah let's go and find some treasure so I'm in good company today yeah the pressure's on the pressure is on foreign so as you can see there are lots of bits of pipe stem here always a good sign but I guess that here in the seaside environment they get smashed up a lot easier don't they very unforgiving yeah yes not quite like yeah not quite like the term smart is it but there's lots of other interesting things to see like this seeing enemy so many beautiful sea creatures crabs go back in your little home they are so beautiful though aren't they these colors that's one stunning crab C an enemies shrimps when we went out the other night with our UV torches to find uranium glass yeah all the tentacles on the scene enemies my camera's not good enough to take photos but um it is amazing I kept thinking is and I have replaced my pink boots with red a red Beach shoes the height of trendiness it just means I can go up to my knees if I want to now now that's the top of a really old bottle that could have been an onion bottle in a past life that's nice isn't it it's a sponge wear I do believe we've got a nice almost complete oh bottle stopper oh look at that that's beautiful what a lovely chunk of beauty beautiful green it might have been a name on there at one point there maybe yes it's lovely okay oh very nice there we go very very nice got to do this the sunshot although I can't see anything I'm being blinded once there we are perfect oh some really nice pottery here this is like um some leaves and Vines got real leaves and vines coming up the Grapevine oh that's pretty no that looks to be quite an interesting little piece of pottery down here I'd love to know what that was in its entirety so here's a challenge here's a challenge to everybody out there to find the the entire piece of what this came from oh how interesting yeah it is isn't it what do you think I can't actually read what it says on there but I'd love to know what it came from South West is that way points yes you're right yes waypoints on the compass I think and there's a one there by the looks of it so yeah something something nautical isn't it have you got something there Matt really yeah yeah oh yes you get quite a lot down here with these ones but oh yeah that's beautiful I see yeah I found a lovely bit of Timber oh that is nice and oh and oh look at that marble now that is stunning what a lovely collection look at that beautiful marble it's so sea worn isn't it it's different to the ones I find on the tabs over here they're a lot more Frosty yeah Frosty exactly yeah and what do you think that came from that piece I think it's a pug in some kind of wood yeah we would go into a hole sometimes you get some that size some that size that normally because they normally go an indentation there I mean he'd put the Rope around it like that that'd be sticking out like that and sometimes you get a mark on the top sometimes yes yes good start lovely so when did you start searching for history um I started metal detecting when I was 13 14 yeah and then I stopped because going out with me and mates and everything as you do and then I started again like I had a transplant in 2017 so I did a lot of beachcombing around this area and metal detecting I started again in 2007 and uh this little coming down the beach and Swine in history see if we can find some more eh let me just hold this big one up to the probably yeah yeah that is a really simple one isn't it the marbles in the UK they're more dented but here they're more yes smooth and frosty which is is that because they've been tumbled I think it's because especially areas like this yeah ready to do find a lot of them working around and catching wood yes this is quite good area in the summer well in the winter all this right seaweed and rat is all gone so it's like so it's a lot easier to see yeah so this part with the the square outline is where the Germans used to bathe and go swimming really what do you mean where those rocks are there so you'll see when we go over there you'll see an outline of all the Big Blocks cut down and then oh did they build themselves like a swimming area a swimming area yeah yeah so why did the Germans build themselves a swimming pool here on the beach in Guernsey well the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces during the second World War and as well as a swimming pool strictly reserved for the German soldiers hundreds of reinforced bunkers were constructed during the war and you can still see them to this day dotted along the coastline now look just down here I've spotted a piece of pottery not that one this one here with some kind of name on it let's have a look oh look it's a bit of a name I'm gonna see if Matt might be able to help Trace where it's from what you reckon looks like that's nice isn't it yeah gardeners good have you heard of them before is it a hotel yeah I've got a nice piece of pottery here with gardeners oh is it there oh look I'm dragging my trail behind me so that was a hotel close to here that's right just around the corner there along from the old Royal gardeners Hotel there we go is it still going yeah it got knocked down it's now offices Now isn't it and and Co-op fantastic a little piece of Guernsey history washed out by the tide gardeners Hotel yay I had a bottle would this be but that have almost been a gym yeah a case chip very nice 19th century oh that's nice oh that's wonderful a little ceramic scene yeah he looks like he is he could be on a boat Maybe [Music] oh that's lovely I like that oh yeah I think there's a bellamon oh yeah it could be a problem because they do the drip yeah it comes down doesn't it yeah it's quite thick so I would have thought there's no space any better mine with face down here have you yeah I've got I've got four now and one is just the eyes and the noses it's really cool what a couple of vegetarian yeah perfect tonight oh beautiful oh lovely and a little basketball oh you've got a little musket ball too and some pipe stems and one that looks like something one point I don't know pipe stem with a tiny fragmented pipes there with some decoration on it oh really so Pipestone with some decoration it's tiny but oh yeah yeah yes I agree yes there is definitely decoration on there yep oh how precious amazing that it survives yeah it's a numbers game I pick up loads and eventually I'll find something with something on it and I tend to leave the ones I've picked up on rocks so I know not to pick them up again until next time start mudlocking well I think make it stems from when I was a kid and I went bottle the bottle down here near where we lived and the guy next door showed me that so that was more bottle finding um and then I think more the mud locking I heard about mud lock about 20 years ago in the Thames and I'd always wanted to go but I didn't think you could do it here and it's not until I I think I started doing a bit of beach combing just generally beachcombing and then you find a few and then go oh I know what that is that's a clay pipe this and it started so probably five or six years ago that I started doing it yes um but it's only really been with meeting Kathy who came into our office for a bit um and then she was interested that's why we go to London but I wasn't gone 20 years ago well and there's still stuff to find we were delighted and even today we found a few bits and pieces so yeah you just you just don't know right exactly you'll find more down here than you would sitting in front of a screen you would it's the thrill of the hunt exactly yeah I know it well yeah me too Matt's just begging me over you found a frozen Charlotte how is that possible so you have hang on let's see yes you have is it it's a Frozen trailer oh not thinking oh that's beautiful beautiful look tiny tiny little Frozen shirts yeah they're quite a lot bigger than that that's like a baby isn't it yeah that's incredible Frozen Charlotte and obviously you know the tale of the Frozen Charlotte the little girl he wouldn't put her coat on and froze to death oh that's a beautiful find well done yeah it's cool man you might have to take a photo actually it's lovely now look at this bit of pottery here now I'm either seeing things or that looks like the face of an Angry Bird but don't you think a bit parrot-like that is beak and his eye what do you think what have you just oh this is Scotty dog yeah you know what I found something very similar but it's uranium no way did you just find that just picked it off that's incredible incredible yeah okay fine yeah oh look at that that is a very special find it I found something very similar in London but oh well done is that you'll find it today nice we'll find ever I think oh man maybe my Georgian Dandy bottle feed no I can't see any holes for it I've got no idea it it may have been on the side or a jar or something that's just broken off it might be glazed with it it's just uh yeah wow what a find I have seen quite a few teeth on the foreshore here more on the beach should I say look yep there's part of the Jawbone looks like cow I just think that's cow maybe horse I'm not sure a big animal anyway more teeth oh look it's a beautiful red piece of sea glass oh that it's an old lens yeah Colin oh that's lovely I love red it's like a sweet isn't it yeah I feel like you could eat it well that is so nice color eh absolutely lovely colors how much do you want for it that is very very nice it's quite rare to find the red it's a nice big pizza yeah that's beautiful that's a very good find Kathy just found something incredible marble that's that's really stunning what colors you must stay as well oh yeah that is a good view of it oh that's really lovely eagle eyes just looking down at the right time I don't know a bit of or what do you call it oh yeah that is a Whatchamacallit it's not fishing weight who knows so do you have the answer as to what this lead thing is not my find Ollie's fine but it's simply a lead weight used for spinning it would have had a loop at each end and the spiral in it just helps it twist through the water okay so there's the answer to that mystery learning every day yes yes and I found a mushroom so you did so that's the bottom half of a like a grouch bottle type stuff of course it is yeah it looks like a button it does look like a mushroom now you can see that this bottle would have had Guernsey embossed on it see that there g-u-e what is this down here that looks like another stopper look at this there's another way to see you can see glass at its best oh that's nice I think this is the closest we're going to come to our pipe today our clay pipe yeah it's certainly the beginnings of a bowl there isn't it it looks like it could be a 17th century Bowl on the end of that interesting there's so much here from different eras lots of Victorian transfer wear and stuff absolutely Old Pottery I've got a bit of Tudor Pottery in there as well and 17th century pipe fragments right well we're going to call it a day soon we're all getting hungry so we're going to go and do a little Roundup of our finds over there so let's have a look at this wonderful array of finds who's going to start Matt can you start yeah let's um have a look that's my best wine for today that is spectacular this little tiny Frozen Charlotte it's beautiful well spotted because it could just have looked like a piece of shell yeah so the feet sticking out it could be a German old razor yes did you find that near the swimming pool yes yeah some kind of class yeah great bit of wood there pretty strange three marbles bottled top of the some lovely sea glass I'm coveting the red piece that's very nice all right it'll be a little blue bit sort of bluish yes very nice beautiful well done on that frozen shoulder and the razor fantastic moving along here to this uh rather wonderful array of uranium by Roger not a bad day the arena oh look at that uranium squat you've got quite a bit of detail on it as well the collar that's incredible yeah a couple of other nice pieces you've got a few bits there haven't you yeah three four be better at night time yeah but still yeah just an old coin and uh torpedo oh coin butter stuffer if you want a little bit that's got to be yeah that's for me that's that's fine so far until I find my whole pipe oh your whole pipe is wasting time it's waiting a week's time yes yeah you're going mud locking in London next week aren't you it's time yeah next Friday can't wait excellent your pipe is waiting it is and um who's next my bits are next so I've had my two glass bottle stoppers just fantastic lovely it's always lovely to find those bottom Stoppers isn't it there's two different different colors as well two different greens absolutely so my marble that's beautiful beautiful beautiful colors in there yeah my half of time you're half a pipe half a pipe Bowl gorgeous especially when I wear yeah it's a lovely lovely shirt lovely the way it's just broken in the right place in the right places isn't it just lovely that's lovely yeah it was a great vibes uh no that's it that's marvelous office and moving on here to ollie just a couple of pieces the decorated pipe stem yeah I like that out of all the pipe stems those plain pipe stems and you've managed to find this tiny piece of really exquisitely decorated pipe stem actually yeah there's a lot of effort gone into the mold yeah something like that really yeah yeah that's really nice yeah and then just a matching almost little button and a lens from you know binoculars yeah yes yes you never know it could be a German yeah binoculars who knows who knows indeed lovely I think that's um really beautiful I love that and you've done very well I have I've been picking up to um I really love this which is from the gardeners hotel in Guernsey apparently so I'll be able to look that up I do love finding something that named research so I'm very happy with that and I also love this piece which is a bit mysterious oh yes yes so thank you so much thank you see you tomorrow bye bye hi everyone thank you very much for watching my video Welcome to my studio I hope that wherever you are in the world that you're happy and in good spirits and I hope that you're enjoying your summer can you believe that we are now almost in August where has the time gone and what have you been doing with your summer I hope you've been having a good one I have recently got back from the USA where I did some really fun collaborations with digging the old west bottle Ned and his friend Paige and we had an absolutely great time it's probably the hottest weather I have ever done a bottle dig in and that was interesting hats off to bottle nerd and Paige because they did a lot more digging than I did and thank you very much to my friend Jan Bishop who also came with us and Who provided a shelter and ice and water all day long because without that I could now just be a little crisp in the lawn where we were bottle ticking but I'm not thankfully I'm here to tell the tale and I can't wait to share those collabs with you because we found some fantastic stuff do go over and check out bottle Ned's channel it's digging the old west bottlened and take a look he combines his passion for for history with his bottle digging and he has a great sense of humor so indeed um what have you been doing have you been hiking have you been to the beach have you been kayaking canoeing going for some nice walks have you been on holiday let me know in the comments below what you've been up to one of the brilliant things for me about doing this channel is that I do get the chance to meet so many interesting lovely people and it was such a pleasure to meet the Guernsey mud locks Ollie Matt Kathy and Roger and so thank you very much guys for coming out with me and searching the harbor for little pieces of History it's a completely different experience to the Thames obviously everything is smashed to Smithereens a lot easier than it is in the Thames where we are lucky to have that that soft mud which keeps everything nice and safe for years and years but it's so interesting to see that we find so many similar objects little bits of pipes stem bottle stuffers marbles Frozen Charlotte's all that kind of thing and I spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon searching with my little beach shoes on and I'm actually going to Guernsey again in a few days time and I hope to go back on the low tide and see if I can find some other little Treasures so um you saw the little piece of pottery I found with gardeners Royal Hotel on it here it is well funnily enough Kathy had actually found a piece previously which is in a lot better shape and here it is probably from a plate and so I was enjoying looking up the gardeners hotel or the gardeners Royal Hotel I often look in the newspaper archives because you can come up with some really good stories and I did come up with one that I was quite inspired by so I will share it with you now it was an article from an 1898 newspaper about the Royal Humane Society's awards for Deeds of heroism and so this is what it said Deeds of heroism Royal Humane Societies Awards the committee of the royal Humane Society as a result of its investigation of many cases of saving life brought under notice this month has confirmed its Awards of the medal or other forms of recognition upon the undimensioned persons a daring rescue was that performed by J.A Eaton of Gardner's Royal Hotel Guernsey in the early hours of the 22nd when it was very dark in the darkness a lady named Shaw who was going to meet her husband by the steamer then Dew walked over the edge of the key into the harbor and was struggling in the water 25 foot deep Eaton plunged in from a ship and grasping her shouted to those on Shore to procure a rope this they did but the Rope parted and they both went under then finding her too heavy to support he held her by one arm and swam with her with the other till the rescue was safely affected 50 yards off so there we are a little bit of History associated with The Gardener's Royal Hotel so now I've got images of um this chap swimming along with this large Lady in the Water who's too heavy to carry but anyway she lived he saved her life and he received an award so it's always really nice to bring to life a little fragment with a story um oh yes so also another fragment this one I think it will be kind of amazing really if anybody actually manages to find the entire design but if you do you do have some time to to search it out then it would be great to hear from you but it does look like a compass doesn't it so some kind of nautical plate or cup I expect it was also really lovely to see Matt's wonderful collection like a little Museum there in his room this top lot is all the metal detecting stuff I found so these are all rings and what have you so you take these to the police station yeah and they have it for a month and if no one comes forward or it's not been registered lost then you get to keep it or you can give it to charity whichever but I like to keep things you've found some rings as well that people have lost have you yes about 35 now 40 rings some jewelry and but most of this is the old silver spoons this bar is the 107 is a regiment that came into Guernsey in 1879 for one year and they've got hardly any information on it and I found that metal detection which is quite cool and I thought this was a real gem once oh look at that but it's not real but it looked real when like when I dug it out heart stopping yeah it's lovely there and then obviously they've got the CC glass colors different colors and then we got some beautiful oh I see the um little Frozen Charlotte there that's yeah we found yesterday yeah that you added to your collection I'm a little frog a frog yeah Cannonball and then some Stoppers they're quite nice I found this down at belgrave when we went yesterday that was under a rock oh my gosh that's stunning a bit broken but that was quite a nice time sorry Oriental toothpaste yeah Cannonball I found I found that one at belgrave now belgrave is where we were yesterday longstore yep that was on top where the dog debate it was on top of the wow okay okay and then just more muscular balls big musket balls down there stuff I haven't gone through yet the metal detecting yeah I recognize that kind of pile I mean obviously we have the marble seed marbles this is my best lot of sea marbles from I found down wherever yesterday give me some good ideas on how to display my marbles yeah yeah and then um what else is there then obviously the best bit is the uh mine look at these everyone Bella Meister I hear you say that a fisherman had dragged one up and yes this one was found down at fermain Bay and he pulled his Nets up and that was stuck in his Nets yes so it's and it's still got all of the Barnacles and everything yeah look at that it is my dream to find an entire thing yeah and me they are wonderful aren't they what a yeah we think this one has had the face put on because it just doesn't look right yeah that looks like it's been out it's been added but it's still a yeah a sort of a bell of mine anyway but a better yes but better Minds and lots of little shards as well yes yeah lots of shards yeah that's my favorite one I found is that one that's a nice shard and then all these other bits are all from the um centers great have you got a dream find something that you would like to find I would love to find one of these yes just sticking out and then think oh yeah yeah yeah and then pulling in there that would be a dream find okay well thank you for showing me all your amazing Treasures no worries and um yeah just take a last look at these beautiful boys here so thank you very much Matt for showing us that and uh yeah I hope that when I'm back in Guernsey very shortly I will be able to come out with you all again and see what else we can find at low tide I'd also like to say a big thank you to the Guernsey mudlarks for giving me this lovely Guernsey bottle from r w Randall Guernsey a really nice Old Ale bottle just look at that lovely color it now takes pride of place on my windowsill so thank you very much I think that's about it really and so if you have any comments or information on any of the finds that you've seen in this video then please let me know in the comments below it's always
