WE REALLY NEED TO TALK ABOUT SMASH!

real question on everyone's lips are my team Karen around my team IV you are on crack I have already filmed this video and I hated it so here I am baby ooh singing about smash I'm actually gonna be talking about smash singing about it but yeah hello everybody my name is Amy and welcome to my channel I hope that you are really really well I did a video about Glee and in that video I was like dude maybe I should do a video about smash and people like give me that smash content so here I am baby ooh we've already done it yeah so smash is a great TV show and I was like noon I definitely wanna do that so I rewatched smash firstly let's just talk about the fact that it was canceled after two seasons it's something I'm still not over it's something that a lot of the Broadway community is not over I don't think a week goes by without somebody on Broadway being like bring back smash I'm like I agree oh my god the door opened and I was like I thought I was the only one who put blue bells here this is like she's accuse right you've got gravy all over your face oh like cat like owner right bring back smash we need to bring back smash and also I went to see katharine McPhee who played Karen Cartwright in the show in waitress the other week she was amazing finally Karen Cartwright is living out her West End dreams I felt a real sense of pride honestly she was incredible you have to go and see waitress in London she was incredible her she used to be mine holy Majoli anyway I'm going to talk about smash now what I need to say about smash is that songs amazing cast amazing I realized after writing down all of my thoughts that I actually had loads of issues with smash when I written down bolts I think I'm able to look at all the stuff wrong with it because everyone in it is so talented I think it's more to do with the Brighton than anything because the performance is in it are so outstanding that you're just like if this stuff was different that would be different it's it goes without saying now that I think smash has the most talented cast of performers ever in a TV show every single person in that show is so talented it makes me want to vomit literally I wrote down some thoughts about smash and I'm gonna share them with you so the really nice thing about what you're now is like I've been to New York a lot well not a lot but I've been twice in the last year for like a week both times and I know New York so much better now and Weiss when I watched it like back in the day I was like oh they're in New York but now I'm like oh my god they're on this street and I've walked down that street and there is Karen Cartwright singing and here am i and I've been on that Street where Karen car I was singing and I just think that's cool he just shows how would your Broadway star know will I ever make it from Broadway stunt or Broadway performer I doubt it when I'm on Broadway or someday you can go back to that clip and I can be like this aged well and when that doesn't happen it'll be so much sadder to look back at that clip something that really annoyed me about smash was the amount of people who are Broadway performers incredible singers and they've got them in non singing roles you really stressed me out for example Brian D'Arcy James Brian D'Arcy James has one of the most incredible Broadway voices of all time and he's there in a non singing role excuse me Rebecca Naomi Jones none sing and roll you are on crack why is she not singing Annaleigh Ashford right so early Ashford sings a tiny tiny bit but not enough for my liking something that bothered me about smash was the way that they talked about Marilyn Monroe so like I love Marilyn Monroe I love some like it hot great film super talented beautiful you know everything but also she had a lot of issues as well and they talked about her like she's this angel and a literal saint every opportunity to like all she wanted was to have a life at home away from the paparazzi and away from the spotlight and it's like she she wanted to be a star they also had a song in it called let me be a star which by the way is amazing such a good song I don't know I just think the way they spoke about her it was relent unless this marilyn is this hain't and she's so otherworldly and godly I like Marilyn Monroe as much as the next guy it just always felt like too much to me somebody later on in this series was like everyone talks about like she's amazing and she had it all these issues and I'm like oh my god in the first episode Julia who is played by Debra Messing says that she hates everyone who writes theater blogs and I was like I feel attacked I know I don't write theater blogs but I do theater blogs so root ok something that confused me about smash was the dance routines so I want you to go back and watch the dance routines and the way that they move is like they will expect off or something the movement never looks quite real I don't know it was really really strange I don't know if they did the songs slightly under tempo just slightly something about the way that they move I don't know if it's a particular editing style I don't know what but it was it's very strange and not like something I've seen in any other TV show I feel as though the show got infinitely better when Wesley Taylor came in I remember watching smash when I was a lot younger and seen Wednesday tear and I was like oh my god I want him to be my best friend he's an icon in smash he's so talented he's so engaged in to watch he's so funny he's so real I love Wesley Taylor I think he's genuinely my favorite person in Smash something that annoyed me about smash was the way that they would talk about people in the ensemble I found it really irritating they'd be like oh well I'm just stuck in the ensemble and I'm too good for the ensemble and I think this is so rude cuz I think if you go to most professional productions and you see ensemble members they're just as good as somebody in a lead role they would be able to play that lead role or they're a cover about to go and play the lead role and they're an understudy and I'm like you need to have more respect for ensemble members you know what I'm saying because look at them they're these insane dancers like literally incredible athletes and they are sweating their souls out on stage and then they're like oh well she's too good for the ensemble too good for the ensemble the ensemble are amazing it just annoyed me real question on everyone's lips am i team Karen around my team ivy now when I watched it back in the day when I was a younger and it first came on I was a huge wicked stamp and I loved Megan Hilty obviously she had played Glinda and I was a crazy wicked fan so I was like oh my god well I'm clearly team ivy and also she came from the Broadway background and she was super stage II and her mum was played by Bernadette Peters that was like of course I love ivy and I thought that she was always more Marilyn than Karen and it really annoyed me that in the first episode Karen goes into this audition and I'm like babe you're auditioning to go and play Marilyn I'm not saying that you should dress up Uzza or do an impersonation well like I feel like she should have done more of an outfit than wearing jeans and a stripy top and sing beautiful by Christina Rockwell era for a Broadway audition to play Marilyn Monroe it just seemed really strange to me and then Jack Davenport as Derek is like yeah I see it and I'm like I don't see it I didn't see her as Marilyn I think that I always was just like well Karen Cartwright am i right I thought she was really irritated and really annoying and then I rewatched it as a bonafide adult and a bonafide actor I actually ended up really just like in IV I feel sorry for ivy in a lot of ways when she gets Marilyn and she's in rehearsals and Karen is trying her best like this is Karen's first professional Broadway job and Ivy's like being such a to her and I'm like there's absolutely no need you've got the part now babe and I was a lot more team Karen but there's also still that wicked stand inside of me who's like team ivy though so tip in all honesty I'm like right down the middle I think it's really hard to give an opinion now because I feel for both of them and I think that both incredibly talented women Megan Hilty and katharine McPhee of both insanely talented women so it's it never comes down to that like I did always see ivy as more of her Marilyn and I think that when they ended up making her Marilyn and and Karen hitlist I think it made a lot more sense Kat McPhee is so much more of a she has kind of more of a pop sound and as much as her Marilyn was great in her musical theater work is it's fantastic she's a great dancer great singer she is kind of more of a poppy side of things than like a Broadway side of things I feel like I've digressed loads but I think it's an important topic to discuss Leslie Odom jr. coming into smash was something that we didn't deserve I loved let's the Odom jr. and like he's my favorite thing about Hamilton he's so intense and so like rugged and so passionate and powerful and I love that in smash you really see a different side of him and you see like a much softer side and I said now I just love him oh my god when he did the nut King Cole thing and oh he's just he's just so town everyone in this company is so talented everyone in smash blows our mind there isn't anybody in smash from like you're not very good everyone I'm like can I please be you everyone's amazing and I think that's why it's hard to do a video when I have nothing to discuss other than the fact that I love everyone and I just think that the writing could be possibly better I don't know I did love smash the writing of the of the script not the music because Haman Shimon mock shame Shimon Shaymin and Scott Whitman I always say his name wrong who obviously wrote hairspray and and they obviously wrote catch me if you can as well SuperDuper talented guys and the music obviously I love the music in smash the 20th Century Fox Mambo model love them great Tunes there's just so much amazing stuff about smash the music and the talent is like it's like watching a Broadway show unfold when you TV I love that oh my god I have to mention when Norbert Leo Butz comes in to do the song from heaven on earth that did it there better prepare he sings a song in smash that's so similar to his like big number from catch me if you can and I'm like no see you guys I just I just love Norbert Leo Butz I know I wish that he'd been in it more I love it when he's like get off the stage Christian Borel Christian Borel did sing a bit in the show but like never enough for my taste I love Christian Borel back from the Legally Blonde days him singing chip on my shoulder gave me a reason to live and I loved him in the show I love him he's amazing my real moment of like what the health was when Karen dev and ELISA went out for a meal and Indian restaurant it turned to this whole like Bollywood number with dev singing which I thought was really strange because as far as I know he's not a singer what why it was just so it was it was a very very odd moment so talking have catch me if you can I actually lost count of the amount of times they were catch me if you can posters in Smash so obviously Shaymin Simon and Whitman read the music for smash and honestly I want you to rewatch smash and I want you to hone in to the fact that in pretty much every scene there is a catch me if you can poster in Eileen's office there's one in the corridor there's one in the studio where they're rehearsing there's one outside this poster outside when they go to Boston to do the tryouts there's one in Alyssa's dressing room there's a huge one in in there like Lobby there's ones on the walls everywhere you look there are posters of catch me if you can and I know that it's clearly like catch me if you can was clearly on at the time of smash being out so that's why they're like hey extra promotion but it was so much like honestly now that I've shown you this you will not be able to unsee it also and the bombshell poster look at it look at the hands Slender Man March when I started I was like oh my god is this a conspiracy theories video I wish I could do a good chain Dawson impression but I can't something i really enjoyed was when Leslie Odom jr. he's in Boston and he goes to church with his family and he's talking to Christian Burrell and his parents about being a performer are you saying like it's a religion for me and I don't crave for anything more than just being able to perform I don't want to be rich and I don't want to be famous I just want to perform and I'm okay with it struck me at the time when I was younger and I watched drop me again now because I have no desire to be famous I want to be in shows I want to perform nothing makes me happier in life than when I'm on a stage and I'm singing and I'm performing absolutely nothing in the world will make me as happy as that ever will no amount of money or subscribers or anything will ever come close to that and I think if you have the love of musical theater like in your soul it's such a deep love that I genuinely don't think that that's why people do it because if you did you wouldn't do musical theater you could try and be in films and TV and stuff if you love musical theater and you want to do with your soul you you just don't care about the other stuff it's about the joy of performing for people and seeing the way that that affects people and the way it affects you and I just thought I'd talk about oh my god when Deb and Ivy stopped shacking up together excuse me I thought it was awful in that episode where ELISA runs off now like right Karen you going on for Marilyn she's like I don't know the role and then Devon and gate getting engages with a dev foot asks it of Marion and then he's sleeping with are you me terrible terrible okay so you know how is like this is a conspiracy right here's the thing that I'm I'm gonna ruin I'm about to ruin smashed performances for you and so the thing that I love so I'm gonna sneeze so the thing that I love so much about smash is how it's so what I think putting on a show is like I feel like it's pretty true to life obviously it's not a hundred percent but like a lot of from the experience I have as well it's very similar audition processes and tech and these kinds of things it really reminds me of real life but so like obviously they break into song sometimes I wouldn't expect them to have a microphone but when they're in tech they're in tech rehearsals for a show and nobody ever has a microphone on and then they're doing performances at the Tony Awards or they're doing performances in Boston and not one person is wearing a microphone ever no one ever has a microphone on in smash literally I think I counted one time where Karen is doing like a workshop thing we dereck and she has a microphone on in like one scene but other than that no one ever has a microphone on and like there's a moment where she's got her Marilyn wig on and she she rips it off and she like walks off stage and rips off her wig and she hair is just like just falls down nicely and I'm like you would have pink curls on you'd have a wig cap you'd have a microphone why don't you have these things I think once you've noticed it you can't unnotice it Jennifer Hudson coming in Jennifer Hudson we don't we don't deserve her literally I love Jennifer Hudson I love what she's so talented she makes me sick it's a moment where katharine mcphee goes into Jennifer Hudson's dressing room and she's she's stunning then she's like opening the cards and like reading all of their personal cards in a dresser anyone who does that that's so rude why would you read some of these personal cards Derek wills how do I even begin to describe Derek wills I heard he has to penny purses and a silver Lexus well Derek wills I I don't know how I feel about him you know do I like him maybe do I hate him maybe like he's a bad guy the something about Jack Davenport that's so fun to watch he's just really easy to watch his knee and like I love a body I always love a body Jeremy Jordan so I watched smash when I was young now I didn't know who Jeremy Jordan was at the time and I have to admit I was like wow that boy can sing but Wow I don't like him and I found him really annoying to watch and I I didn't feel sorry for him I just thought he was aggressive and rude and I think watching it back now as an adult even possibly a more compassionate person than I think I used to be I think I used to be quite closed-minded and I think now I'm like I can understand the things that you go through and your commitment issues and your abandonment and your drug abuse and addiction and stuff and I think I just understand those topics so much more now that I'm able to actually really enjoy his performance and I think it's amazing that he as somebody who is so kind of loving and adorable and the fact that he is able to make you dislike him so much is a testament to Jeremy Jordan as a performer and an actor what the hell am i going on about I just think he's really good and like he can really sing I have to say though Jeremy Jordan like being like I just want some coke it's very uncomfortable to watch it's like Jeremy Jordan you shouldn't speak like that my darling please don't do cocaine please I I just look Jeremy Jordan we know this this is not new information he looks so young in smash though like when I was watching I thought my goodness you look about 12 please stop doing cocaine Andy Mientus what a sweetheart he's just so sweet you just want to hold him and hug him and cuddle him and look after him and I love him I'm like it's so annoying and sad what happened to him but then I loved that he got like an episode where everything was like kind of dedicated Germany still was in the episode but I'm still also like why because if they ever bring smash back they can't bring him back I love him I've just really wanted to bring smash back you know I really loved when Megan Hilty went into liaisons and she got to show her soprano range because so much in the show she is belting her little face off as I say I know her from playing Glinda and seeing that soprano range so it's so nice to see that as well in Smash and her performance in smash it as anything tells us that yes she played a wonderful Glinda but my god we need to see her as Elphaba could you imagine I would die she'd be such a good Elphaba my gosh oh my god I wrote Jeremy Jordan being angry about Lea Michele is a mood I love when he talks about Liam ish look he's like Lea Michele is a celebrity we don't need a celebrity and I'm like actually Lea Michele was in Spring Awakening before she was a celebrity so please respect her Broadway roots she was also in ragtime you know Philippa Sue was in Smash who knew not me I'm watching it just chilling in bed and then I was like ah Philippa sue Philippa sue is in the ensemble of hit list I know I'll let that sink in for a moment Christian Beryl sing in Vienna to Andy Mientus I just had to mention that Vienna by Billy Joel is one of my all-time favorite songs of life so hearing Christian Beryl singer my hearts I love it is so good right so lin-manuel miranda makes a cameo moment and he's talking to Christian Burrell and Christian Borle plane played by Tom playing Tom like drags bring it on to Lynn and then eat Lynn's like I love you and then a few walks away Christian was like I hate you and I'm like why would why would anybody hate Lynn I really wanted that storyline to be developed because I had no reason or understanding why he hated it was it jealousy hmm I need to know I just realized that I've completely skipped over Ellis Boyd who is the world's worst character in TV history I hated him like I know that that's just probably good writin I suppose but I hated him he was awful so he played Tom's assistant and then he suddenly turns into a producer and he's like telling everybody what to do and I'm like are you the are you you know I didn't get it I hated him I just loved smash I know that I've literally just talked to feel like 20 minutes about all the things that I hate but actually I loved smash I think it's an amazing TV show and I want it to be brought back and [Music] can I be in it if it's brought back could I be like a British youtuber who they bring into play Marilyn that would be so bad what else is there to say other than smash is amazing I just love that like everybody who was in a Broadway show at the time or ever was in smash they're like are we gonna cast in smash and they went through their play bows and was like uuu uuu uuu next play bill you you you you you you I mean if you weren't in smash what was that about every episode Sonia pop and you'd be like what you doing here Lindsay Mendez what are you doing here Alice Lee what are you doing here drew Goering just everybody I don't know it was just amazing anyway
