Pre-Match Prediction: Apex 3-1. Kyle may be the best player on the Quad but I think Apex has the next 4. Even if he gets one, they just have too many people who can deal with him and no one on Apex is a slouch in the evasion department either.
Chase 1 (Kyle vs Michael): Pretty expected to send Kyle out first regardless of chasing/evading. The longer the match goes, the less likely he's gonna be able to grab points. Incredible tailing by Kyle. Michael is very good about maintaining momentum and balance while navigating all these obstacles and while Kyle had a few moments of awkward footing, he still managed to actually close the gap and find the tag. I think his ability to go on high lines without losing much speed at all is a huge asset. Michael didn't really do anything wrong; Kyle's speed is just insane.
Chase 2 (Seth vs. Kyle): Interesting choice as Seth has never been the strongest of high line chasers while Kyle utilizes them pretty frequently. Seth almost catches him off guard with that patented Tilted Cube dive but Kyle manages to escape. After that, Kyle uses the high lines to build some distance and manages to spot very well at the Ridge to cut back while Seth commits to the dive. Seth had a few tricks but Kyle was able to respond on the fly very well. Huge point for Hollywood.
Chase 3 (Jason vs. Kyle): Jason's chasing is fantastic. It literally looks like he loses 0 speed going under the Mountain and I think even that catches Kyle by surprise. Kyle is a bit more sure footed towards the middle of the chase but Jason's acceleration from a very awkward position under the Sisters somehow manages to rival Kyle's speed over the Sisters and Jason gets the dive. Still, the longest anyone's ever pushed Jason.
Chase 4 (Dale vs. Jason): Jason does a fantastic job abusing the high EQ along the entire backline and I thought it was gonna be a routine evasion against someone who hasn't been the most comfortable around the major obstacles. But Dale really accelerates into the dive and brushes Jason's foot at the last moment.
Chase 5 (Rob vs. Dale): Great use of high lines. That ramp out of the Tilted Cube doesn't get used a lot but it really forces evaders into a tough situation as they see their chaser descend towards them. Great for flushing people out quickly. Rob does the same thing at the LaZBoy where he opts to go up when a lot of people would probably just tail Dale because they're so close. This forces a desperation slide which Rob quickly capitalizes on. Very smart chasing.
Chase 6 (Antonio vs. Rob): Rob has to be one of the smartest evaders in the tournament. I think he intuitively knows that Antonio, while having the speed to keep up, isn't the strongest navigating the obstacles. He consistently spots well and chooses to go up at the LaZBoy corner again. That route he took is way tougher for non parkour athletes IMO compared to simply going along the edge and going high or low at the Sisters. Antonio isn't necessarily slow at this section but he certainly doesn't gain any ground and Rob cruises to a comfortable evasion.
Chase 7 (Omar vs. Rob): Very surprised Rob managed to get out of the Ridge corner when he was so far deep but Rob's ability to change direction and accelerate is insane. Omar seemed like he had the angle at a few points but was always a hand's length away.
Chase 8 (Justin vs. Rob): Despite Justin struggling a bit early on, I thought he was consistently making smart choices. Kept taking center control, never committed too hard while waiting for Rob to move first. This eventually paid off because he took the high line out of the Tilted Cube and catches a gassed Rob with a nice dive.
Chase 9 (Olof vs. Justin): Ill advised dive for Justin. Not much more to say there.
Chase 10 (Miguel vs. Olof): I think Miguel's the second strongest member of Hollywood and he shows it off here. Takes a great angle to close the distance on Olof early and has the speed to make up the rest of it under the Mountain.
Chase 11 (Michael vs. Miguel): Probably the most tag attempts I've seen in that short amount of time. It was like the 6th swipe which officially connected.
Chase 12 (Kyle vs. Michael): Round 2 and I think this is the first time that anyone's actually managed to use Kyle's speed against him. He completely breaks Kyle's ankles around the Loading Cube, gets him to slide under the Mountain as his QM isn't the strongest and then finds a way to change directions over the Sisters that Kyle is totally not expecting as its a route he almost never chooses. This builds a huge amount of distance for Michael as Kyle launches towards the Tilted Cube and Kyle just has no time left at that point. Huge evasion for Michael.
Chase 13 (Dale vs. Michael): Nice change of direction by Dale to catch Michael breaking early. It's the same move Michael used against Kyle but Dale's balance allowed him to jump back for the tag.
Chase 14 (Amos vs. Dale): Surprise appearance by Amos. A very rough looking chase as Amos crashed into a pole and Dale chose to dive before cutting back directly into Amos. Somehow, he gets out of this with a roll across the center but Dale can't find his footing and Amos gets the time to go for the dive.
Love the bathrobes as the confetti flies. Apex put on quite a show and the tournament as a whole was a huge success IMO. A huge increase in matches but I thought it was handled well and I hope we get to see more tournaments of this caliber in the future. Also can't wait to see many of these teams return at WCT5 as well as USA'21.
Such an epic encounter with so many lightening paced chases. Apex were virtually faultless and they turned in key performances just when it mattered most. Congratulations to them and also to Hollywood Freerunners who didn't make it easy for them.
This really was just depth versus start power. If Kyle makes the tag his second time in, HFR might win, but if he doesn't score three in a match, they just don't have the bench to match Apex
I got to see Seth and Jason chase Kyle! :D
Was it just me or did they lube up the instances before this one?
A little surprised HF put Dale up knowing it'll be a match point situation for them. Thought they might go with Miguel or Antonio.
Damn! Michael J. Sliger is slaying it! #WCTUSA
